now at noon, a man sent to the hospital after being hit by a car in san francisco on the same day police officers are out in full force to keep the streets safer. a man in the north bay escaped a fire unharmed only to be hit by his neighbor. i punched my neighbor in the face. >> why the neighbor said he was so fed up with the situation next door that he resorted to physical violence. we're learning more about a teen who hid in a wheel well during a five-hour flight from san jose to hawaii. how he's doing today and what his classmates say about this incredible story.

a man is in critical condition and undergoing surgery after he was hit by a car while crossing the street in san francisco. it happened just after 7:30 this morning here on 20th avenue near stoern grove. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. this accident comes on the same day that san francisco police and chp officers are out in full force to crack down on traffic violaters. alex savidge joins us live from where the collision occurred and explains about today's safety enforcements. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. police this morning were in the middle of a traffic enforcement operation meant to cut down on the number of people being hit by cars in the city. that's when they were called to 20th, because a car crashed into a man crossing in this crosswalk. the collision was at about 7:30

this morning. officers arrived here and found the victim, a in man in his -- a man in his 30s. it was a 0-year-old woman behind the -- 20-year-old bomb woman behind the -- woman behind the wheel of the car that hit him. she was cooperative with police officers. that crash happened right after san francisco police launched a crackdown on dangerous drivers along the van ness corridor. make officers were pulling drivers over -- motorcycle officers were pulling drivers over for speeding, failing to yeed to people in crosswalks. that operation was carried out with help by the chp. so far this year, seven people have been hit and killed by cars crossing streets in san francisco. a police commander involved in the operation said it was difficult to hear about yet another crash this morning. >> it's heartbroking, in that

all of this is preventable. people simply pay attention and follow the rules of the road. we don't have to have the loss of life. we don't have to have the serious injuries. >> reporter: officers will be back out during the afternoon commute issuing tickets and giving out warnings to drivers on van ness. they will be focusing on folsom and essex streets, other trouble spots in the city. as for the accident here, it does not appear that the driver who hit the man was speeding and it doesn't appear she was under the influence at the time. what they are looking at is the possibility is she may have been temporarily blinded by the sun this morning. it was just starting to come up at that time. we're live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 455-year-old oakland girl is -- a 5-year-old girl is in the hospital after being hit in the eye by a paint ball. police say the little girl was riding in a car with her mother

when someone in a passing car shot a paint ball through an open window. the girl is listed in serious condition and is still being treated for her eye injury. police are looking for the teenager who witnesses say fired the paint ball. milpitas police say a young woman learning how to drive caused this damage at a chase bank branch on south park victoria drive this morning. investigators say it appears the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and hit the bank. no one was hurt. but as you can see, a window was broken. a novato man escaped a garage fire unharmed only to get punched in the face by his neighbor. the man lives in this house off chase court. he says popping the noises woke him up at 3:00 a.m. a fire had broken out in his detached garage and was headed towards his house. a neighbor confessed to later hitting that homeowner because he said he is fed up with the illegal drug activity that he claims has gone on in that home

for years. >> this was the straw that broke the camel's back. and i walked up here in front of the chief and punched my neighbor in the face. >> reporter: why did you do that? >> because i'm fed up. >> the fire gutted the garage. no one was hurt. arson investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire. a busy fremont street is back open after the bomb squad was called out to investigate a suspicious object. it was found after 9:00 a.m. at the bus stop at thornton avenue. newschopper2 flew over as the alameda sheriff's bomb squad was trying to figure out if the object was dangerous. the streets were blocked off. the object was described as a black canister with wires coming from it. the bomb squad determined it was not an explosive device and safely removed it from the area. we have an update on how the teen who hid in a whel well of a hawaiian -- wheel well in

a hawaiian airlines flight is doing. christien kafton is live at the teen's home where family members still have not said anything publicly about the death-defying ride. >> reporter: we're hearing from the teen's classmates who are saying they are stunned to hear who it was who survived that trip and survived those frigid and oxygen deprived conditions. >> i was really shocked and really blade he made it and he's -- glad he made it and he's all right right now. i'm worried about his family. >> reporter: we have been trying to see how his family is doing. we knocked and just like yesterday, there was no response. we have an update from the department of human services. they say the teen is recovering in a honolulu hospital and welfare officials are arranging for the safe return to northern california. ktvu has learned new details about the hours leading up to the transpacific flight. the teen apparently spent six to seven hours on the tarmac at

mineta airport before that maui- bound flight took off. eric swaulwell is saying what happened at the airport could happen again. he's calling on the government accountability office to look into airport perimeter security. at the same time, the airport is saying it will be using this incident as a learning tool to prevent it from happening again in the future. >> our security program here at the airport does meet and exceed all federal requirements. we have an excellent track record for security at our airport. >> reporter: now, we've also heard from hawaiian airlines on the security breach issue. in a written statement the airline said hawaiian and its contractors responsible for handling our aircraft in san jose will continue to assist government agencies in their investigation of this incident. at this point, still no word on when the teen will be returning to california. we're live in santa clara, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you.

with three senate democrats in legal trouble, darrell steinberg ordered the rest of the senators and their top aides to attend a day-long training station in ethics. the most recent senate say senator to face charges is leland yee. his indictment came after ron calderon was indicted on bribery charges and wright was convicted of voter fraud earlier this year. the calls for justice in the deadly shooting of 13-year- old andy lopez have hit a fever pitch after his classmates were sold they were suspended for walking out of class and protesting his death. brian flores explains why the communeny remains on age. >> reporter: this 8th grader made it to class this morning at lawrence cook elementary school. it typically wouldn't be a big deal but yesterday said he said he was told he was suspended for walking out of class to mark the somber anniversary of the shooting death. his friend, andy lopez. >> these kids don't have the support at the school.

the only support they do have is, you know, their parents, their friends and, you know, members of the community that feel the same way. and they need to see that. they need to know that they -- they are not alone that they have support from adults. >> reporter: about 25 students took part in a protest tuesday morning calling on justice for  the death of 13-year-old andy lopez six months ago. lopez was shot and killed by sonoma county sheriff gehhaus. the original plan for the group was to spend about 30 minutes before heading back to class but they say their principal said not to return and informed them of their suspensions. >> we're asking young people no not be out and be gang bangers but to show an interest. we have students who did that, they practice democracy at i 13 and 14 and are being penalized. >> reporter: the school deferred comment about what

happened at the school district. the district's superintendent, however, did release a statement saying in part "we've stressed that the most responsible and thoughtful way to pay tribute to handy is to stay in school and use after class time to express their messages." >> andy had a lot of courage. he always stuck up for his friends and for what he believed. and yesterday he completely showed up in each one of them. he was there with each one of them as they got the courage to walk out, stand up to these -- to the staff, school staff and stand their grounded on what they believe -- ground on what they believe in. >> reporter: this memorial as bell as the justice for andy coalition continues to grow. they say they will not stop until the d.a. completes the investigation into exactly what happened to andy. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. it was the second worse shipwreck in san francisco bay when a steam boat sank in 1888

officials searching for a missing malaysia airlines flight 370 say a piece of sheet metal that washed ashore in australia likely didn't come from the missing jetliner. that comes as the search continues in the south indian ocean. the sheet metal had a fiberglass coating. australian investigators say they will still examine it, though, for the remote chance it's linked to the jet. at the same time, they plan to bring in more powerful sonar to map the ocean floor in hopes of spotting any wreckage related to the flight that disappeared from radar on march 8th. federal scientists say they've located the wreckage of a ship that sank in san francisco bay in 1888. noaa spent 90 months last year spell -- nine months developing

this. the ship went down in the fog after colliding with a much larger ship, the oceanic. 16 people on the city of chester died. a motorcyclist is still fighting for his life after san jose police say he slammed into a car. a witness told officers the motorcyclist ran a red light and hit the side of the car. the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet but still suffered major head trauma. >> we have a witness in the intersection at the time. according to them and what they saw, the motorcyclist did run the red light. >> the two people in the car were not hurt. they stopped and cooperated with police. investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors

in the crash. cases of whooping cough are increasing in contra costa county. health officials say a 9-year- old girl is the latest person to come down with the disease. she attends morella park elementary school in martinez. now the county health department is taking steps to protect other students. on friday, the principal notified parents about the disease and the student is now at home and being treated. >> i just was hoping that those inoculations that my daughter had would be sufficient. they get another one before 7th grade hoping that do does the trick. >> there are 19 reports cases in contra costa county. centers for disease control says children between 2 months and 6 years old should get vaccinations. vaccinations are recommended for adults who spend a lot of time around young children. pregnant women are advised to get vaccinated as well. before the vaccine was created

in the 1940s, the whooping cough killed 5,000 to 10,000 people in the u.s. every year. the irs is under fire again. the inspector general says the agency gave out nearly $3 million in bonuses to employees with disciplinary actions -- issues, i should say. that includes more than 1100 workers who did not pay their own federal taxes. kyla campbell spoke with a tax payer watch dog. >> reporter: the irs is under fire for handing out bonuses. i obtained this copy of the inspector general's report. it shows the agency paid more than $2.8 million in bonuses to employees who had disciplinary issues, including $1 million that went to 1100 employees who cannot pay their -- did not pay their taxes. they handed out bonuses from 2011 to 2012. a top dog from the irs says --

>> you are probably the most disliked agency in the federal government. so you have an added burden of spending that money correctly. >> reporter: the irs said it has since stopped issuing awards to executives with disciplinary problems and it is working on similar policies for union work. but that will need on -- workers. but that will need to be negotiated. nearly 70% of the workers received a bonus in 2012. cash bonuses that year added up to $86 million. plus workers were awarded about 490,000 hours of extra paid time off. in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. a new war on poverty. that was the topic as leaders gathered in oakland. willa chan organized the meeting and she says since president johnson announced the war on poverty in 1964, many of the conditions such as income and equality are as bad or worse than they were 50 years

mendocino, approaching eureka and the energy will be approaching the bay area by this time tomorrow. not for today. we're expecting a lot of sunshine out there. already, showing u temperatures are in the 60s across the board. it's 64 in santa rosa. san jose, 62. livermore, 65 and oakland downtown checking in at 61. winds are a big factor yesterday. today, not as strong. in fact, you can see the single- digit winds from 2 to 8 miles an hour out towards concord and oakland, out towards sfo with a stronger wind and also towards the bay. winds out of the west, 15 miles an hour. a gust to 20 miles an hour in half moon bay. winds will strengthen throughout the afternoon hours, especially after 3:00, 4:00. for today, we have this. a lot of sunshine, another live camera to show you coming up. i do believe we have this camera looking out towards baypoint. another perspective here looking out towards the clear skies, a little bit of haze. more clouds. we bring in the chance of a few light showers. by friday it looks like we're

wall street's six-day rally is taking a pause. the maimer stock indexes are off the lows of the day. but still in negative territory as investors react to the latest quarterly earnings news and a worse than expected report on new home sales. airline stockses are the biggest advances as positive news from delta and boeing. the dow is currently down just 5. the nasdaq's down 25. and the s&p down 10. professional networking company linkedin is expanding the footprints in san francisco. the company signed a lease for a new building going up on second street at howard. linkedin plans to use 26 floors when finished. it already has offices at two other buildings and is headquartered in mountain view. the company says the new

building should accommodate about 2500 workers foreits growing enterprise. the oakland as have rejected a ten-year lease offered to stay at the oakland coliseum. they say the proposal does not meet all of their requirements. the as have been pushing major league baseball to move to san jose which is the territory of the giants. the as have agreed to a series of sort extensions at the oakland coliseum. food trucks are making their way to contra costa county in an event called the taste of the world market. beginning may 1st, nine food trucks are scheduled to set up at pleasant hill city hall every thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and food trucks will be onhand for lunchtime at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station every thursday from 11:00 until 3:00. a portion of the proceeds from the market will help raise funds to build schools in other countries. thank you for making ktvu your choice for news.
