a lot of questions being raised by folks in this area. some had medical appointments that were walking down the street to get in there only to be turned around by the yellow tape. >> some back in a supermarket parking lot but a number over people leaning out their windows standing on the sidewalks trying to get a sense of what is going only. >> here we have tried calling medical officers inside that
3:36 pm
building. we haven't been able to get ahold of anyone on the inside so the only people that have been inside that you have seen have been evacuated. and you said they were not talking to you, but a couple did flash a half hearted smile. >> they did. they did not seem -- the person i managed to reach in one medical office in that building, described that they are keeping the doors locked. they are staying inside. the police told them not to come out, but there was no sense of panic. they were fielding a lot of calls who were trying to find out what was going on the in the building, but for the time being they were keeping the doors closed to keep themselves presumably safe. >> it is a huge building. i'm assuming it is a fairly quiet area. daily city is one of those cities we don't typically report on a lot for crime and other such problems so for this to happen in the middle of the afternoon, i can see why people who live and do business there
3:37 pm
are certainly shaken up. >> yes. it is boarded boy a nursing home facility. there is a dialysis clinic. there are at least two churches around here and a number of homes, as well, too. it doesn't seem to be typically very visibly trafficked at this time of day, but it is close to the highway so you would expect to see a lot of rush-hour traffic. things are at a standstill. people are going in and out of the offices adjacent looking over, but there is no sense of urgency that they need to get out of the neighborhood at this moment. >> stay on the scene for us and when you get new information, bring it to us live on ktvu. thank you. to recap here, it is a breaking newer sit ways where at 1:30 p.m. police got a call of a report of a patient trying to attack a doctor inside the medical
3:38 pm
dental building. that is at 1500 south gate. the scene is much the same right now. a second ago we showed you a police officer with his gun drawn and that is not the only such officer we have seen. a few minutes ago, we watched before we broke in live and we saw a line of officers heading into the building each holding a weapon so it does seem to be a tense situation unfolding there in daily city. this is videotape, the top third of your screen. those are workers who were inside the medical building now being let out under the cover of safety being told to evacuate. we heard from david stevenson that other workers were told to stay in their offices. the big unknown is if, indeed, someone did attack a doctor and if there are any injuries, we have yet to be able to confirm any of that with police but we're working to do that both here in our newsroom and there on the scene in daily city, so
3:39 pm
again, 1500 south gate. it is a major street. it is right where 1 and 280 split in daily city, again south gate avenue, 1500 south gate. let's go ahead and bring in another channel 2 news crews. here is more. sal, i know you're familiar with the building, with the location. tell me what yeah can share. >> reporter: well, i called the doctor because what i heard the address, i heard the address 1500 south gate and that is where my doctor is and i talked to someone i know. apparently, someone, they have been told, they were told to get out of the building and since i have known this person, she told me that there was a shooting in the building which i don't know if we have confirmed but that is what she said to me on the phone. the building is an old 1960s building. it is three stories or two stories and my doctor is on the
3:40 pm
ground floor. there is a pharmacy on the floor there, as well. one of the things i have been trying to do is call -- two of my doctors are in that building so i am calling to see if everyone is okay. most of the doctors who do practice there are, they go to seton and there are a couple different offices in the area. a lot of people go there to get their medical work there and it is concerning for those of us who know people in that building. >> sal, first of all back to what you said when you spoke to someone at your doctor's office inside this building, she told you there was a shooting, but we have not been able to confirm that. did she say anything about anyone injured? i asked her that of course. i asked her as much as she knew and it led me to believe whatever happened didn't happen in my particular doctor's office which was a relief to
3:41 pm
me, but she made it sounds like they had to go. they were going to forward the phones to the doctor's exchange which is answered when they can't answer. that is all i know about that. i was concerned about quite frankly my doctor who works inside that building and i was trying to get information for myself and that is what i found out. >> sal, we have been trying to make calls into the building as well and all the officers have also had the phones forwarded to the doctor's exchange as well. is there any sort of the security guard there? it is alarming office building and seems ridiculous to ask but can anyone walk in and have free access to any of the officers there? >> unfortunately, they can. i have never been stopped going into the building. you walk in the main entrance. there is a pharmacy on the left and there is no security at
3:42 pm
all. you can walk into any doctor's office there and go right into the offices without anyone stopping you. it is not like an office building where there is a guard up front. it is just -- you can just walk in. i have never seen security there. >> s since you know this area so, so well. usually it is quiet and you drive in, park, walk up. something like this very out of the ordinary? >> reporter: absolutely. the only thing i have ever noticed it is hard to find a parking spot. that is the only problem i have ever come across. everything else is quiet, a normal doctor's office. there is a pharmacy there, too. and a lot of those doctors in that complex have been -- they are long-time doctors practicing in that particular building for a long, long time. >> can i get your thoughts? can you see a picture of the
3:43 pm
live coverage here? >> reporter: yes. that is what got me when i heard the address. i'm like holy molely, that is my doctor so i think people and my parents' doctor too so people in the area are probably wondering if anyone they know is injured. >> sal, thank you for calling in. ktvu giving us his expertise of the area, his knowledge of the building there. he talked to his doctor who was inside that building and he spoke with someone in the office and she said there was a shooting. that is all we know at this point. those are reports from people inside. we have not been able to confirm that. >> it is a breaking news situation unfolding for the past couple of hours. at about 1:30 police got a qual that a patient fried to attack a doctor at the medical dental building at 1500 south gate in daily sit where 280 splits into 1. we have been showing you a
3:44 pm
number of pictures of officers with guns drawn entering the building and people being let out from inside the building. heather, you're familiar with that building. >> reporter: yes, just like sal. i immediately knew where this was when i heard the address. for full disclosure here, that is because my daughter's pediatrician is in this building. as sal mentioned, let me layout the building here. it is a two story building with several medical officers. there is a pediatricians office on the first floor as well as a pharmacy, so, yes, i, too, have never seen any sort of the security personnel or anything like that. i just want to tell folks that i did call my daughter's pediatrician and they said it is temporarily closed and that everyone inside at least that
3:45 pm
office has been evacuated to their knowledge. >> so you're probably having some of the same feelings as sal going is that my doctor? are those people i know? what is going on there? >> reporter: absolutely. that is why i immediately called to find out what the situation was, but you know, especially when you look at this building and you think about a pediatrician's office being there, lots of small children and mothers and fathers with their children in the waiting room there. i see lots of folks typically in the pharmacy, so definitely concerning whenever you turn on the television and you see all these s.w.a.t. officers surrounding a building that you're so closely tied to. this does bring up the question about how secure medical facilities are. as sal mentioned you can pull up and walk in. i never encountered security personnel and i don't think if you ask most people in this office they wouldn't say they ever felt the need for security but obviously great concern
3:46 pm
when you look and see something like this and knowing that there is, you know, folks getting treated for various medical conditions, as well as small children. >> you said it is a two story building. what about access inside. sal said anyone can walk right in. once inside 1500 south gate are we talking about long hallways, stairs, elevators? >> reporter: well my daughter's pediatrician's office is on the first floor so i never ventured to the second level but there is a set of stairs that are approachable right on entry. there are at least three main entrances on the lower level that you can access. i know at our doctor's you're able to walk into that particular office, the door is typically shut, but once you open the door, you can walk in and then you know meet with the receptionist and go ahead and make your -- confirm your appointment to see the doctor.
3:47 pm
as far as the rest of the building, i'm not that familiar with except you are able to roam around the building freely and get to the office you need to. there is a directory that you can confirm which office you're going to and then can make their way through the office building. >> thanks for sharing your insider information as we deal with the breaking news situation in daily city. police are surrounding the medical dental building at 1500 south gate. the call came in about 1:30 this afternoon that a patient tried to attack a doctor. at this point we have not been able to confirm anyone has been injured but witnesses are reporting that a patient tried to a fact a doctor. it is a very active scene there. one of the pictures we shared early on was a number of people being evacuated. watch the line of people walking across the top third of your vene. these were people being led
