it tomorrow. breezy, cloudy, cloudy to the north bay. increasing clouds and 60s and low 70s for most. here's sal. we have a look at the south bay commute. i want to show you that the traffic is going to be busy on northbound 101. we had word of a crash northbound 101 near the brokaw exit. i don't see it anymore. wherever it was traffic is slow coming up from 280 up into sunnyvale. 280 and 85 are still doing okay. there is slowing on 280. i would say that's your best freeway to get into the valley. bay bridge toll plaza, 20- minute drive time into san francisco. maybe picking up a little bit to 25 if you are at the very end of the line and you are in the slowest rain. that kind of thing but it's around that ballpark time. this is a look at richmond slash san rafael bridge approach. traffic is moderate.

back. back to the breaking news. oakland police are investigating an early-morning morning shooting. the shot spotter picked up shots on the border of emeryville and oakland. that's where brin -- brian flores is. it's still an active scene? >> reporter: yes, it is. this is 62nd near the border of oakland and emeryville. you can see several cop cars out here looking for any shell casings or any evidence they could find in terms of what happened in terms of the shooting. from what we understand at least one person was shot this morning around 6:02. tori, as you mentioned that spot shotter tic technology led police here. one person was shot. apparently the person was bleeding and he self- transported himself to highland hospital. this is an area called the

golden gate district. there is a school behind near where the shots were fired near the maynard academy. just to the north off 63rd is the golden gate academy. that's north. i want to take it back out here live. you can see a response out here. one lane is blocked off as police are continuing to evidence looking for any evidence, shell casings. still haven't heard from police on exactly what happened. one person was shot. taken to hospital. unknown condition as well. we'll continue to work this story talk with oakland police as well as residents who may have heard the shooting that happened after 6:00 this morning. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> i was in my bedroom and then i hear some people yelling upstairs. help! call the fire department! >> fire forced a group of san jose students to run for their lives. we have cell phone video of the ball of games and new pictures

from inside a burned-out unit. the building is on east williams street. christien kafton is at the apartment building where investigators think they may know where the fire started. >> reporter: some really dramatic stories coming out of this. firefighters saying they believe the fire originated in the top floor unit. you can see the front door of the unit boarded up. that area believed to be the origin of the fire. now, we have some video from inside of that burned-out apartment unit. this, again, firefighters believe the fire may have started in the couch. residents shot dramatic video as the flames swept through the apartment building. one resident says it all started after he lit a candle and discarded a match on the couch. the fire started and the roommate ran out for safety only to realize his roommate was still inside the apartment. the roommate used his own mobile phone to call back to

his roommate who bolted for safety and was injured in the process. firefighters say he was second- degree burns and is expected to survive. we have eyewitness accounts from a resident who saw that man as they themselves ran for safety. >> he was burned on his side, jis colored skin and -- discolored skin and stuff. he was stuck in the fire for maybe a minute or so. i'm not sure. kind of scary. >> reporter: because of the eyewitness account, firefighters don't believe it is suspicious. they say it appears to be an accident. most residents are being allowed back home. the folks that we've talked to this morning have confirmed this is right around midterms time. it's not the kind of distraction that students need as they prepare forment tests. we're live in san jose, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. another warning of a scam

that's costing people hundreds of dollars. among the four known victims is this woman who asked us to identify her only as ann. she says a man claiming to be sergeant jackson of the san francisco sheriff's department told her she needed to pay a fine for failing to appear for jury duty. he instructed her to buy a prepaid cash card in the amount of $480. she then gave him the card's account number, allowing him to access the money. >> i work, you know, to supplement my income because i'm retired. i work part time. but it hurts. it really hurts that someone would call on my home phone and lie to me. >> ann realized she was scam when she went to court the next day and was told she had not been summoned for jury duty. the basic rule of thumb, law enforcement will never ask you for money. an autopsy set for tomorrow

on the body of a man found at a dump near petaluma. sheriff's deputies were called yesterday afternoon to the sonoma county central disposal site. there was no sign of foul play. they are withholding the man's name for now until family members are notified. they do say he was 39 years old. a who claims he's the biological father of audrie pott is now suing to be included in a wrongful death lawsuit. michael lazarin claims he had an affair with audrie potts's mother when she was separated from her husband. audrie pott committed suicide in september of 2012 after embarrassing photos taken of her after a sexual assault were put on the in the. her parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking undisclosed monetary damages from the parents of the boys

held responsible for that assault and now lazarin claims he should be included as a legal heir. an august 189th hearing on the claim is -- 19th hearing on the claim is scheduled. san francisco's latest rat invasion is tied to the drought. today's chronicle reports an alarming number of rats have been spotted in the back. the bayside park is on the south eefd edge -- south east edge of the city. rodent experts point out the recent dry weather is fooling ralts into start -- rats into starting their spring mating rituals earlier. that's leading to a rat baby room in many outdoor parks and other areas. they have been popping up in the north beach neighborhood. many rats have been spotted scurrying around washington square during the past month.

the city of san francisco recently hired a pest control agency to get rid of the pats in north beach and the park. tap water could come with added bacteria and nitrate. officials say it's completely safe to drink. the san francisco examiner reports the public utilities commission plans to construct four new wells within city limits to reduce dependence on the hetch hetchy reservoir. according to a review by the usgs, san francisco ground water contains bacteria and nitrate at levels that exceed the safety standards for drinking water. but officials say a small amount of well water would be blended with the pure hetch hetchy water so it would meet standards when blended. an 84-year-old man is in custody in connection with a shooting inside a daly still medical center that had

guns in a wide rangeof new places including churches, bars and schools. guns can even be brought into government buildings and airports before security checkpoints. the guns everywhere law expands the state's stand your ground rule which allows gun owners to fire their weapons in self- defense. critics say it could allow criminals to claim self- defense. the federal government is proposing its first regulations on e-cigarettes. the fda wants to ban the sale of e-grets to minor -- e- cigarettes to minors and wants warning labels. this may take effect after a 75- day public comment period the fda wants to expand their oversight on toe back doe to more products. they want cigars, pipe gel, hook das and dissolvable

tobacco products. up until now, the fda has only foe focused on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. the irwindale city council delayed a decision for two weeks on declaring the sirracha plant a public nuisance. some people living in the city say the fumes burns their oirs and throat -- eyes and threat. if the company is declared a public nuisance it will have 90 days to reduce the flames. police investigators plan to return to the scene today where a man was hit by a car and critically injured. police say a man in his 20s, 30 or was hit by -- 30s was hit by a car. the 20-year-old woman stopped

at the scene. they say she my have been blinded by the sun. that's what investigators plan to look into today. this happened while the police were conducting a traffic kakdown in other parts -- crackdown in other parts of the city. they targeted this morning during the morning commute. officers conducted special traffic enforcement on folsom and essex streets last night. 7:17. hey, sal, you have everything straight on highway 24? >> we're trying. we don't have a lot of crashes this morning but we to have some slow traffic coming up to some of these major areas as dave mentioned, highway 24. we're looking at it here. the drive time between 680 interchange and the oakland side of the caldecott tunnel is a little less than 15 minutes. i do want to mention the traffic is going to be okay in

the commute to san francisco westbound bay bridge, 25-minute drive time getting into the city. taking it all the way to the san francisco exit. i also want too mention in san francisco, southbound 101 at paul avenue right here, there is a truck that lost a load of dirt on 101 southbound and the traffic is now backing up from the 280 interchange. we'll keep an eye on that because if it's not gone soon, this could end up having a problem with all san francisco traffic coming in from the east bay. we'll deep an eye on it for you -- keep an eye on it for you. mostly cloudy to partly cloudy. a lot of low clouds around. there will be some sunbreaks, especially the south bay. the system continues to push into the north. there's light rain up there. ronald thompson, .08 in crescent city. eureka, a steady rain it's getting closer. that will be in late tonight,

british columbia. one day after a 6.6 earthquake. the quake hit at 8:15 in the pacific ocean off the coast of vancouver island about 280 miles northwest of seattle. the quake made lights sway. so far we haven't heard of any injuries or damage. and a tsunami warning was not issued. a delegation of top officials in nepal are flying to negotiate the threat of boycotting. they are angry that the government's initial offer to pay only $450 to the families of each who died say that's not enough. several tour companies have announced they are canceling their expeditions this year. an east bay teen in a coma for days after a devastating

continues to saratoga. an 84-year-old man is in custody accused of firing a gunshot inside a medical building in daly city. police arrested the suspect late last night hours after the shooting on southgate avenue. ktvu broke into regular programming shortly after the first reports of gunfire yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt but this shooting prompted the evacuation of dozens of patients and medical personnel. police also closed down several streets surrounding that medical building. tara moriarty is following some new developments in this story. you are here now. you are at police headquarters. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we just spoke to an officer. we got information that we'll share with you. we were able to speak to some neighbors. the people who live next door to raymond, the 84-year-old man arrested yesterday. they say he was quiet, nice man. lived there for more than 30 years. he kind of kept to himself, they said. they are absolutely shocked that he's the man that police

believe is responsible for yesterday's shooting. now, we could take a look at his house here. this is where he was arrested last night around 10:00. police say he didn't say much and they didn't even have to go inside. he came out and surrendered. now, this all began yesterday afternoon. doctors, staff and patients were forced to evacuate from the medical center at 1500 southgate avenue when a shot was fired. shortly before 1:30, a doctor spotted an elderly asian man he did not recognize holding a handgun. the doctor ran for coverer, heard a gunshot and called 911. what remains unclear is what motivated an elderly man to fire on a doctor. >> when people think of 84-year- old people they don't think of someone 84 committing this type of crime. i think some people were shocked at the age of the suspect. tactical teams searched the building and roof. no suspect found. they did find bullet frag meants on the second floor.

police say since the shooting happened during business hours they were able to get a solid description of the gunman and track him down. he's now in jail where he's expected to be charged with attempted murder. we've been in touch with the jail. we're getting to get a booking photo released at some point in morning. live from daly city, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. 7:36. now to continues coverage of the teenager who flew from san jose to maui as a stowaway in the wheel well of a hawaiian airlines jet. we're hearing from his father. the 15-year-old boy recently moved to a home in santa clara with his father, stepmother and other siblings. his father told "the voice of america" he first learned about this from police in hawaii. he said "they told me they were holding my son. i was shocked. i wondered how my son went there." stunned airport workers in maui

gave the hungry boy, teriyaki meatballs, rice, cookies and water. the teen started to attend classes at santa clara high school five weeks ago and speaks english as a second language. the father says his son was struggling in school and was unhappy during the family's four years in the united states. he was always talking about going back to africa where his grandparents still live. he says they want to go back but due to the current living conditions, we can't go back. the teen is recovering at a hospital in hawaii. four men are in custody this morning. they are accused of firing shots at police officers in oakland. officers responded to a report of a suspicious car near coolage and brookdale avenues around 9:00 last night. whenever the officers arrived, they spotted the car with four men inside and the car took off. as police chased the car, someone in the car fired shots at the police car. the officers eventually stopped the car and they arrested the

four men. no police officers were hurt by that gunfire. happening today -- sonoma county supervisor, efren carrillo, is scheduled to take the witness stand in his peeping tom trial. now, he will be the first witness to testify for the defense after three days of prosecution testimony. police say the supervisor was wearing only underwear and socks when he was arrested for peeping into a neighbor's window last summer. efren carrillo told officers he had a few drinks that night and he's admitted he has a drinking problem. after the incident, he checked himself into a rehab program. 7:38. the warriors continue to push their push in the playoffs as they return home tonight with the series tied at one game apiece. they are counting on fans to provide -- provide home court advantage against the clippers. alex savidge is there now. it will be rockin' tonight.

happening today, oakland pd expanding its press online. pam cook is live in the newsroom with more. >> knowledge brings a sense of safety. wise words from one oakland police officer who is already very active on twitter and says this new move will help build relationships. now, it's the site called next door. it's active in 33,000 neighbors across the country. people register and join other people in their specific neighborhood. it is password protected. it's not accessible by search engines. you have to verify your address to join your particular group. two years ago, san jose police started partnering with next door to send specific alerts and metages to its neighbors -- messages to its neighbors. >> it gives us another opportunity to ent act with the community but at the same time it fosters more community growth. >> now, san jose police admit that the open communication

lines can cause other challenges. they do have a warning for oakland police as they launch this to prepare to get a large volume of messages. oakland police will hold a news conference later today to give us more details of this new partnership and how they plan to use next door. in our next hour of "mornings on 2," we hear how it's helped one neighborhood identify crime in their area. san francisco is considering installing body cameras on the uniforms of police officers. it would cost up to $3 million a year to put cameras on all 1700 officers. chief greg suhr is currently negotiating with the police union to test a pilot program for 50 officers. there is heavy debate over the cameras. supporters say it provides an accurate record of events while opponents worry about the costs and fear privacy rights will be violated. we're talking football.

the new nfl schedules are out for the 2014/2015 season. the 49ers will open the season the road. september 7th against the dallas cowboys. the 49ers home opener in that first regular season game at levi stadium, that will be september 14th against the bears, the chicago bears. now, the raiders open their regular season on the east coast. they will be playing the new york jets. the raiders' home opener is the 14th and they play the houston texans. joe montana will lead a team of the former 49ers in a flag football game at the stick july 12th. their opponents, quarterback dan marino and other former members of the miami dolphins. montana led the 49ers over

the clouds will win out eventually. our system is stillaways away -- still aways away. clouds and sun, coast, fog, breezy out of the west. 60s, very, very low 70s. here's sal. we are looking at a problem on 101 southbound in san francisco. they are cleaning up a dirt spill that is blocking a lot of the lanes and san francisco traffic now getting out heading south is terrible on 101. also on 280 because 280 does join with 101 there as you know. so if you want to use 280 you might want to plan for some slow traffic. 280 through daly city isn't bad. but 101 is slow. our camera dash is fogged out -- is fogged out. we can't see. but traffic is bad. the toll plaza getting into san francisco about a 35-minute delay. i want to mention we have a problem in marin county. it's slow from novato to san

rafael on 101 in marin. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we begin with the breaking news we reported at 7:00 a.m. gunfire in the golden gate neighborhood of oakland. it happened on san pablo avenue. brian flores was the first reporter on the scene and has this information from neighbors about what they heard. >> reporter: good morning. police continue to investigate here in the city's golden gate district. as you can see here, several police cars are here. what you are noticing is traffic starting to pick up for the northbound lanes here. we are in the city's golden gate district. this isen area that's between -- this is an area between north berkeley and emeryville. one lane is blocked as police continue their investigation. from what we know this morning, one man was shot and ininjured, shortly after 6:00. we understand he was able to take himself to oakland hospital. oakland pd's shot spotter technology was able to pinpoint

and notify officers when and where the shooting took place. witnesses say police arrived around 6:15 this morning. we actually spoke with a person who lives around the corner from where the shooting took place. here he is describing what he heard this morning. >> i heard the shots this morning. my house is along the side there. about 6:15, there were three shots and then about 15 minutes later, there was one other shot. we're really accustomed to it in this area. it happens frequently. >> reporter: the shooting happened near the golden gate recreational center and also is the aspire berkeley maynard academy. it's not believed school was in session at the time when the shooting happened. as we take you back out live, traffic is starting to pick up. northbound lanes of san pablo avenue. police are on the field of the

rec center. again looking for any evidence perhaps any shell casings. we've not heard any information of any suspects. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. a san jose apartment fire just hours ago severely burns a san jose state student and leaves about a dozen other students searching for a place to stay. this fire occurred just outside the school grounds. ktvu's christien kafton is at the apartment building now and investigators think they may have found the source of that fire. christian? >> reporter: yeah, they think they have a good idea on how this fire started. residents coming and going from the apartment. some of them returning after being forced out last night. fire investigators believe that the fire broke out up there in that upper corner. neighbors this morning, telling us they had to run for their lives when the fire broke out. >> we got out with the clothes on our back and ran out with

nothing. no shoes. >> reporter: we have some new video of that burnedout apartment building looking inside. that's where firefighters believe the fire started. on cell phone video you can see how quickly the fire spread. the fire pred throughout the apartment and the roommate inside ran outside only to realize his roommate was still inside. firefighters tell me that they believe that this person actually was lighting a candle inside and may have discarded a match onto a couch. that's what started the fire. when the roommate ran outside, he used his phone to call his roommate who bolted for safety and was injured in the process. he had second-degree burns but is expected to survive. >> it was reported that the person that did sustain the burns did run through the fire and he did have some significant second degree burns. >> reporter: truly harrowing tale for getting out of the apartment. 11 people are displaced.

most residents being allowed back home. again, some of them returning just now to view the damage and see just how much fire damage was done here at this apartment. one final vote. a lot of the residents here tell me that all of the residents are san jose state university stufrts and they are say -- students and they are saying this is the midterm time and this is the last distraction they need going into those exams. a man who claims he's the biological father of teen suicide victim audrie pott is suing to be included in a wrongful death lawsuit. he claims he had an affair with audrie pott's mother when she was separated from her husband. audrie pott committed suicide in september of 201 after embarrassing photos taken of her after a sexual assault were put on the internet. sheila pott and her husband filed a wrongful death lawsuit

seeking undisclosed monetary damages from the parents of the boys held responsible for the assault. now lazarin claims he should be included as a legal heir. an august 19th hearing on his claim is now scheduled in superior court in san jose. 8:07. a new scam here in the bay area where someone pretends to be in law enforcement and convinces people to give him hundredsed of dollars. now, a woman who only wants to be identified at ann said she's -- as ann said she's one of four known villes. she said a man claiming tok sergeant jackson with the san francisco sheriff's department called her and said she had to pay a fine for not showing up for jury duty. he told her to buy a prepaid cash card for $480 which she did and gave him the account number of the card which gave him access to the money. >> i work, you know, to supplement my income because i'm retired. i work part time. but it urt hads.

it really -- but it hurts. it really hurts that someone would call on my home phone and lie to me. >> ann realize realed it was a scam -- realized it was a scam when she went to court the next day. police are advising everyone, law enforcement never calls you and asks for money. two san francisco prerty owners are being sued by the city of san francisco accused of illegally converting rental units into tourist hotels. city attorney dennis herrera made the announcement and said this violates city housing and zoning laws. he says the two owners evicted long-time tenants and started offering the apartments to tourists using sites like air b and b. if the city wins this lawsuit, the owners would have to pay up to $200 a day for the violations as well as turn over any illegal profits. san francisco's latest rat invasion is tied to the

drought. today's chronicle reports an alarming number of rats have been spotted in herins head back. the park is on the southeast edge of the city and is a popular spot for joggers and dog walkers. rodent experts point out the recent dry weather is fooling rats into starting this spring mating rituals earlier. rats have been popping up in the north beach neighborhood. experts say those rodents appear to have been forced out pie the construction of the central subway system. many rats have been spotted scurrying. a pest control company was hired to get rid of the rats in poth place -- in both places. and 84-year-old man arrested inside a daly city medical office. >> i think some people were shocked at the age of the

8:13. happening right now, first lady michelle obama is meeting with children of white house employees. it's part of the annual take our daughters and sons to work day. today is designed to expose children to what a parent does during the work day and to show them the value of education. this is the 21st year of this program. the department of homeland security's inspector general may have changed or delayed investigations that the -- at the request of the white house. that's the conclusion of a report from a senate oversight panel that's expected to be released later today. the washington post reports charles edwards routinely shared information about investigations with members of the obama administration. the panel also found edwards may have changed the wording of

three reports after speaking with political advisers, such as those who worked for then- homeland security secretary, janet napolitano. 8:14. the federal government is proposing its first regulations for e-cigarettes. the fda wants to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. it also wants to require warning labels on e-cigarettes. the fda says they -- that would set a foundation for regulating e-cigarettes. this proposal could go into effect after a 75-day public comment period. the fda want to the expand the oversight of tobacco to include more products. they want to oversee cigars, nicotine geals hookas and dissolvable products. it would require deposit companies to register their products and reveal what ingredients are used. up until now, the fda has only focused on cigarettes and

smokeless tobacco. an autopsy is scheduled tomorrow on the body of a man found near a dump in petaluma. sheriff's deputies were called to the sonoma county central disposal site. investigators believe the body may have come from a transfer truck in the healdsburg area. there was no sign of foul play but they are withholding the man's name until family is notified. he was 39 years old. pg&e is stepping up helicopter patrols after the deadly san bruno explosion. pg&e mop teres 7,000 -- mop steres 7,000 -- monsters 7,000 miles of pipeline every month examining construction going on within 300 feet of transmission lines. they ordered work near pipelines to stop more than 1600 times last year. in many of those cases, construction crews didn't get permission or wait for underground utility lines to be properly marked. >> we escalate those threats to an immediate with a call to the

local pipeline supervisor. if we can't reach them, we go to our gas control and activate an emergency notification network. >> prosecutors say pg&e violated federal pipeline safety laws by not performing the required maintenance. 8:17. san francisco police investigators plan to go back to the scene today where a man was hit by a car and critically injured. police say the man in his 20s or 30s was hit by a car as he crossed 20th avenue and winona street near stern grove yesterday morning. investigators say the 20-year- old woman who hit him did stop at the scene. they say she may have been blinded by the sun. that's what investigators plan to look into today. this latest crash happened while san francisco police and the chp were conducting a traffic crackdown in other parts of the city.

police officers targeted van ness avenue between market and geary streets during the busy morning and evening commutes. seven people have been hit and killed by cars in san francisco this year. the police conducted several traffic enforcement stops on folsom and essex streets last night. let's see if drivers are behaving on the roads this morning. let's check in with sal castanedo. >> they are so far, tori, dave. we haven't had a lot of slow traffic. however, we have a problem with the 101 dirt spill. they were cleaning it up. everything was kind of going as scheduled, then the piece of equipment they were using to clean it up, that broke down just to make matters worse. southbound 101 at paul avenue, the right lane is still blocked. traffic will be slow throughout san francisco. 280 is a better way to get out of the city. you will deal with slow traffic at the 101 interchange. as we move up a little bit here. 80 westbound from hercules to richmond heading out to the

macarthur maze. slow traffic there as well still for this late morning commute sand if you are driving on westbound 24 some slow traffic as you leave la fayette. the bay bridge toll plaza, 25, 30-minute delay. there's been a huge delay on the 880 ramp and on west grand trying to get onto that little area of the bay bridge. and northbound 280 in san jose at the 880 interchange. this traffic is moderately heavy. let's go to steve. a lot of low clouds and fog around. had a nice e-mail from jenny buck out in pleasanton. she said it's cloudy here. looks like rain. i said, well, okay and then she wrote me five minutes later and said it's sunny. that's the way it will be today, clouds, then sunny. the fog is not going anywhere. that's helped along by the front coming in. we'll get a mix of sun and clouds coming in unless you are by the coast. mostly cloudy by tonight. rain to the north. rain might hold off a little

bit. but drizzle will be here. rain returns tomorrow. it does not look like a lot. it will be much, much cooler tomorrow. pretty cold air coming in for this time of year. i think that's almost a bigger message than the rain. 50s on the temps. much warmer because cloud cover, not only the fog but a little breeze. we had 30s yesterday. that's not the case today. oakland west at 6, napa at 10. it's a westerly breeze. an onshore push for most. it's there. i expect that to kind of pick up later. increasing clouds today. low cloud decks that will start to move in as these clouds get closer. it looks like there's pieces to it. i think the first piece is beginning to enhance a little bit off the sonoma coast. 44 in tahoe. kind of mild. 50s for others. a system will sweep in tonight into tomorrow. rainfall not that much. they cut san jose way down. this is about right.

this morning we're getting a look at a deadly shipwreck in san francisco bay. 125 years after the steamship sank. scientists have released these sonar pictures of the city of chester as the ship is called, after finding wreckage of the ship near the golden gate bridge. the ship has been under water since 1888, when it split in two after colliding with a steamer in heavy fog. there were 90 passengers on board. every wreck like every person has a story that speaks to us

and connects to the heart as well as engages the mind. 16 people died in the disaster including two children but historians day the death toll could have been much worse if not for the heroics of the crew of the other ship who were initially blamed for the accident. a memorial is planled at four point in honor of the sailors. a presentation will be held tonight at the aquarium of the bay. we've posted a slide show of images from the shipwreck on our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. look for the link on the images tab. 8:25. an east bay teenager who survived a devastating skateboarding accident is hoping other skateboarders will learn from his story. ryan carol of pleasant hill was not wearing a helmet when he crashed last month in southern california. he's made an amazing recovery but he's still working to get back his ability to speak and

move. his short-term memory has been damaged. and the accident changed his sense of taste. >> i feel like i should have been wearing a helmet and been more cautious. >> carol's skateboarding -- crash came three days after kate hopkins died in a skateboarding accident in yosemite. she graduated from alhambra high school in 2012 and was a student at the university of tennessee. olympic swimming star michael phelps returns to swim after a 20-month retirement. this morning, he's easing back into the sport he dominated. the 18-time olympic gold medalist will swim the 100- meter butterfly at the marina grand prix in arizona. this is his first competition since he said he was retiring after the london games. he couldn't say if he was

custody. he's accused of firing a shot inside a medical office building in daly city. the suspect was arrested late last night hours after that shooting on south gate avenue. ktvu news broke into our regular programming shortly after the first reports of the gunfire yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt. but the shooting prompted the evacuation of dozens of patients and medical personnel. police shut down several streets surrounding that medical building. tara moriarty is following new developments in this story. you are at police headquarters this morning, tara. >> reporter: yeah. i to want to mention we had a chance to speak to raymond awassi's neighbors. they say he was quiet, nice, very unassuming. they were absolutely shocked to discover that he was the one police believe was responsible for the shooting. this is his home located in daly city. he was arrested here around 10:00 last night on plymouth circle. police say that he didn't say anything. when he came out.

eyewitness accounts led detectives to him. now, this all began yesterday afternoon when doctors, staff and patients were forced to evacuate from the medical center at the 1500 block of southgate avenue. shortly before 1:30 a doctor spotted and elderly asian man that he did not recognize in the hallway heelding a gun. the -- holding a gun. the doctor ran for cover, heard a gunshot and called 911. police searched the man's house and found a gun. >> there was a firearm and ammunition found in the home. at this point, it's still under investigation. >> reporter: you were able to find bullet fragments in the hallway in the medical offices. >> yes, there were some bullet fragmants at the crime scene. that's still under investigation. as i said, if that was the same firearm recovered in his home. >> reporter: yesterday afternoon, teams searched both floors of the building, and then the roof. no suspect was found. more than nine hours later,

that's when police zeroed in. the man is in jail where he's expected to be charged with attempted murder. what remains unclear is what motivated him. his bookie photo has not been released -- booking photo has not been released yet. when it is, we'll bring it to you. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. four men in custody, they are accused of firing shots at police officers in oakland. officers responded to a report of a suspicious car near coolage and brookdale avenues around 9:00 last night. when the police arrived, they spotted the car with four men inside and the car took off. as police chased the car someone in the car fired shots at the patrol car. the officers eventually stopped that car. they arrested the four men. the officers were not hurt by that gunfire. we're now hearing from the father of the teenager who flew from san jose to maui as a stowaway in the wheel well of a hawaiian airlines jet.

the 15-year-old boy recently moved to this home in santa clara with his father, stepmother and younger insiblings. his father told the voice of america he first learned about this journey across the pacific from police in hawaii. he said "they told me they were holding my son. i was shocked. i wandered how my -- wondered how my son get there." he was given meatballs, rice, cookies and a bought ofle of water. he started high school fives with ago and speaks english as a second language. his father said he was struggling in school and was unhappy with his four years in the united states. he said he was always talking about going back to africa where his grandparents still live. we want to go back but due to the current living conditions, we can't go back. the teen is still recovering at a hospital in hawaii.

no word yet on exactly when he will return to the bay area. happening today, sonoma county supervisor, efren carrillo, is due to take the witness stand in his peeping tom trial. he will be the first witness to testify for the defense after three days of prosecution testimony. police he was wearing only underwear and socks when accused of peeping into a window. he said he had a few drinks that night and admits he has a problem. after the incident, he checked himself into rehab. the northwestern university football team will vote on whether to form a union. a federal official last month ruled that northwestern's scholarship football players should be considered employees of the school and have the right to unionize like regular

some of the top stories -- this apartment near san jose state university appears to be a total loss after a late-night fire. look around there. investigators think they may -- it may have been started by a match that was thrown away. 11 san jose state students now need a new place to stay while one of the students suffered second-degree burns as he was running for safety. we're still following breaking news in oakland. a man is recovering in the hospital after an early-morning shooting. this happened just in the past two and a half hours ago, in oakland, near the border with emeryville. ktvu's brian flores is there. you were the first reporter on the scene. you are back now. so what's the latest on the investigation, brian. >> reporter: good morning. police continue to investigate the shooting that happened just after 6:00 this morning. they are looking for any shell casings from the shooting. here in the city's golden gate district. this is an area between north berkeley and emeryville. as you can see one lane remains

closed as police continue their investigation. from what we know this morning, at least one man was shot and injured shortly after 6:00. opd's shot spotter technology was able to pinpoint and notify officers where the shooting took place. this was off 62nd and san pablo avenue. witnesses say police arrived around 6:15 this morning. when they did arrive, they didn't see the victim but they did block off the area where the shooting took place to investigate. around 6:26. that's when they got a call from oakland's highland hospital where they say the victim was driven there by another person. we just got an update from opd on his condition. te they -- they tell us they ran cat scans. the victim is in critical but stable condition. we also spoke to a person who lives around the corner from where the shooting took place. he didn't give us his first name. but he describes what he heard. >> about three mott shots and then -- about three shots and then it felt like 10, 15

minutes later one shot. pop, pop, pop. and then sometime later, pop. >> reporter: now, the shooting happened near the golden gate recreation center. near here is the aspire berkeley academy. it's not believed school was in session at the time. as we take it out here live, an active scene on the -- on 62nd and san possible blow. you can see traffic starting to pick up northbound on san pablo avenue. police are on the field on the rec center looking for evidence as well. this remains an active crime scene. one person injured. taken to highland hospital. we've not heard any information on any possible suspects. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:47. today, oakland police will join thousands of other neighborhoods online. pam cook is in the newsroom with the announcement today that officers hope will make oakland a safer place to live. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. at 1:00 today, the oakland police department will unveil

the liquor low-pressure system of a popular walnut creek creek bar has been suspended because of several police cars about disorderly conduct. state officials say crogan's on locust cannot serve alcohol for 20 days. that's because there were more than 200 calls about crogan's during a 15-month period because of fights, assaults and public drunkenness. >> there's too many incidents.

a burning home in livermore. officer brian sleeper was first at the scene on gray street tuesday night. you see his hands bandaged. a back yard shed were both on fire -- a back yard shed and a home, both on fire. a woman in her 70s couldn't walk on her own. when he heard about someone being inside, he kicked in the door and wearing no protective gear and with no fire training, he went in. >> it seemed like it was pretty chaotic. there was neighbors running around. i saw the flames. >> with the help of the neighbor, officer sleeper carried the woman to safety. he has minor injuries. his right hand is bandaged. the woman was not hurt. investigators believe oilily rags in the shed may have started the fire. a block in san francisco san francisco's tender loin neighborhood is being renamed in honor of vicki marlane. marlane passed away three years
