280 in san jose. live picture there. traffic moving along just fine in both directions. definitely your commute could be a little wet this morning. thank you for joining us. it is friday, april 25th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about the weather and traffic. steve has your forecast. >> i do indeed. cloudy skies with rain here. starting to pick up a little bit. parts of the north bay is raining up. rain all the way down to monterey. some light rain here this morning. some of it is kind of steady here. it will continue to be on the cool side. nothing too heavy here. all in the light green. occasionally might get bursts of moderate. there are breaks in there. it's not steady or anything. toward the santa cruz mown tapes and down to santa cruz. that seems to be the focus of the heaviest. 50s on the temps. they will stay right here. we get morning rain or cloud cover here. and then we have to get the back edge of this to come in.

that is the cooler air. rainfall projections continue to be very light. there will be another system late that night and early. cloudy. rain cooler for all today. possibility of thundershowers this afternoon. a lot of low 60s. here is sal. good morning. we are still looking at the traffic that is moving along very nicely in many areas. this is northbound 280 at 880 interchange. you can tell by looking that it is going to be slow temperature and because well actually it will be rainy and slow in some spots because of the wet weather. let's move along and take a look at 580 westbound. already slow traffic coming in off the altamont pass. but in livermore it looks good. traffic on the pass is slow but it's just after 2:05 but gets belt ever by the time you reach the main part of livermore. if you are driving to the toll plaza, more slow traffic. it looks like the metering lights should be on pretty

soon. let's go back to the desk. we have new information on what may have made a teenager hide in the wheel well of a jet and fly from san jose to hawaii. janine de la vega is joining us live to tell us about the new claim from the stow away's mother. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the british tabloid the daily mail is reporting that it appears the boy ran away and stowed away in that hawaiian airlines jet because he was unhappy living with his father and stepmother and he was trying to get to his biological mother. the daily news says that the 15- year-old boy's parents split in 2000 and his father brought him and his siblings from africa to the u.s. for a better life. the paper says that she hasn't seen her son since 2006 and claims her ex-husband told her children that she had been killed in a rocket attack in

somalia. the boy found out two years ago through the somali community that was not true. the woman reportedly suggests her son may have climbed into the wheel well of the 767 jet in a desperate attempt to visit her overseas. the daily mail reports she is in the process of getting a sponsor to the u.s. and wants to get custody of her children. right now the teen is still in a hospital under going treatment in hawaii. the department of child welfare services is working to bring him back to california safely. no word yet on when that will happen. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. a warning for parents and staff at a local elementary school. be on the lookout for a suspicious man. tara moriarty is joining us now from the school with the disturbing details about this case. tara. >> reporter: investigators say that an older man was seen peering at a kindergarten class

while touching himself. this happened yesterday afternoon around 1:30 when a guardian of a student noticed the man standing in the hallway. the witness says the man was looking through a window into a patio area where a kindergarten class was playing and he appeared to be touching himself. when the man saw the witness looking at him he walked off campus. the man is described as latino between 58-65 years old wearing a red windbreaker with black sleeves and black pants. the witness said that the person was immediately -- the witness actually immediately told the principal about the incident and investigators were notified a day later. we have put a call into police to see if they have any updates. we're also trying to reach out to the school principal here. live in san leandro i'm tara

moriarty. time a break in the case of a well known dog walker. she was shot and killed last null on fern street. the shooting happened after salamon stopped her car to take video of a street crime on her cell phone. she reportedly followed the suspects who opened fire after an argument where her phone was taken. 22-year-old stefan lee and 23- year-old mario floyd have been charged with several crimes including murder in the course of a robbery. lee is serving time at san quentin on unrelated charges. floyd has a prior conviction for carrying a loaded weapon. police say both suspects have been linked to an east oakland gang. they are scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges next week. oakland police are crediting miss salamon for trying to stop crime in her neighborhood but she could still be alive if she

just called 911. however some of the neighbors say a shortage of police officers has left them with no choice but to investigate crimes on their own. >> opd is tremendously under staffed. there are simply not enough officers to go around oakland patrolling so it does mean it's up to the citizens to be the eyes and ears for opd. >> some neighborhoods have also established e-mail lists where crimes and suspicious behavior can be reported. homeowners have also installed surveillance cameras and hired private security guards in some cases. vallejo police are investigating a murder-suicide. several neighbors saw a man approach a woman on the front porch on a home yesterday afternoon and opened fire. the man then turned the gun on himself. police say the man and woman lived together at the home but investigators say they are not sure of a motive. a $5,000 reward is being offered to catch a man who

robbed the sonoma county bank. the sheriffs office leaves this surveillance photo of this. he walked into the exchange bank north of santa rosa around 12:20 yesterday afternoon. deputies searched the area. they haven't found him yet. barts new ride to oakland international airport is still on track to open in time for the holiday travel rush later this year. but the cost for you to ride on the new oakland airport corrector won't be cheap. passengers could pay up to $6 a trip because of rising construction costs. the automated rail line will link the oakland coliseum bart station with the our port. it will replace air bart which is a shuttle bus that follows a similar route. new this morning president obama reaffirming america's alliance with south korea. president obama went to the

presidential palace in seoul, south korea today. he was greeted by this very elaborate welcoming ceremony. president obama says the two nations stand shoulder to shoulder against north korea's effort to build a nuclear program. >> and we're united on the steps pyongyang needs to take in banning their nuclear weapons and bow listic weapons program. and living up to their international obligations. >> president obama offered condolences to the families of those hundreds of teenage students who died in that south korean ferry boat. he announced he will present their high school with aiming knoll yay -- with a magnolia tree. it came from the south lawn. two more bodies were recovered today from that ferry boat. 119 people are still missing and presumed dead. investigators are looking into what the ferry boat was carrying besides the people on board. experts are speculating that

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. natural gas explosion at a north bend washington restaurant damaged several buildings and caused minor injuries. these are pictures sent to the twitter page of our sister station cairo in seattle. people in the area say they heard a loud explosion just moments before a building burst into flames. that explosion was centered in a pizza restaurant which is located near a gas station. people had to be evacuated from their homes. the cause is still being investigated. police in milpitas arrested two men in connection to the city's only homicide of the

year. 19-year-old jesus of san jose was shot and killed on january 14th in the parking lot of the executive inn. after a three month investigation, police say they have identified two suspects and found that they were both in jail for unrelated crimes. 26-year-old loyce weaver charged with murder and assault of a deadly weapon. a multimillion dollar drug trafficking ring in santa clara county has been dismantled by local and federal law enforcement. 18 people now in custody. one of them is this man. also known as blanco. they believe he's a high ranking cartel member responsible for millions of dollars in drug sales. >> his organization was trafficking narcotics throughout the west coast of the united states.

it effects the supply side of the narcotics. >> the investigation was dubbed operation five degrees. it started in 2012. officers seized meth, cocaine, heroin, weapons and thousands of dollars in cash. many of the suspects who were arrested are facing more than 20 years in prison if convicted. former supreme court justice john paul stevens thinks the federal government should legalize marijuana. the 94-year-old retired justice says public opinion has changed on the issue. there isn't much distinction between marijuana and alcoholic beverages. now he says prohibition between alcohol in the early 20th century is generally thought not to have been worth the cost. he thinks that is how marijuana would be viewed in the future. the federal government has agreed to let colorado be the first state to collect taxes from the legal sale of recreational marijuana. some lawmakers want to use the millions of dollars that had been collected for marijuana sales taxes for programs to prevent drug use, addiction,

and treatment. time is 6:15. a woman in san francisco says he was pepper sprayed after fighting to get her stolen bike back. joslin says her bike was stolen last week from a muni bus rack and she was devastated. after posting a photo on her bike on the internet she got a tip that her bike was at market and 12th street. >> the guy says to me it's a nice bike isn't it? i said it is a nice bike, it is mine. >> she says she was pepper sprayed after she tried to wrestle her bike away from one of the thieves. the thieves escaped any way. and joslin draw has since purchased a new bike. northern california teenager killed in an atv accident has given life to six other people. after the atv crash left him in

let's move along. that is a ten minute drive time into san francisco. san mateo bridge does look good. we've been mentioning the rain may play a role in the commute. 580. we haven't seen a lot of slow traffic through livermore. surprising in a good way. and no trouble on 880 south. let's go back to steve. 56. it's kind of a running gag with tara and myself. 56 in san jose. and off in the distance the city and the skyline 54 degrees in san francisco. cloudy skies. some very, very light rain. and it's about a tenth of an inch i think we will start most of it. light rain or drizzle to the north. it's more of a steady rain to

the south. we still have a ways to go here. picking up a little bit off the san mateo coast. i'm buying into that. we have rain up to roanoke park. that looks to be the cut off. maybe over to about yountville. north of that it looks pretty quiet. ukiah and into lake county. light rain also concord and out to antioch. again it just keeps going and going. nothing too heavy. there are some breaks. milpitas picks up .04 and .05. light rain along the coast. and even into santa cruz mountains it looks to be a little heavier there. and morgan hill to gilroy as well. 50s on the temps. really on the mild side. there is a little bit of a breeze. not that bad but if you have the rain and breeze, it's a little chilly. this is what happens for the morning. and then we might get a break or two. this is the cooler unstable

air. not only that, it's setting up a pattern for what could be a really wild severe pattern from texas, oklahoma to the northern plains and also the deep south. that would probably be sunday through tuesday or wednesday. and this could be our big time severe weather maker. so keep that in mind if you are traveling that direction. rain in the morning. cloudy. and then turn more showery in nature. you can see right there that bears watching. rainfall patrol jury excuseds continue to say santa cruz mountains will get the most. there will be another system late saturday into early sunday. about a tenth of an inch for some. 35 up in tahoe. we do have a winter weather advisory. this goes until 5:00 a.m. saturday. could be a foot over the passes. snow level around 5,000 feet. cloudy with rain. cooler for all. possible thunder this afternoon. temperatures not really going far. 50s and 60s. everyone really warm here. one more system late saturday and sunday and then it clears out and we warm it up pretty

flight to memphis was taking off. we don't know yet how close the planes came to each other. the state of california is struggling to raise funds for an early warning system for earthquakes that is already used in countries around the world. this is what happened. mexico city's early warning system there gave some people more than a minutes notice that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake was coming last week. now a news anchor hearing sirens was able to announce the quake was coming. it could allow trains to slow or stop, let people exit elevators, and clear bridges. >> if you have sirens that warn people that eminent danger was coming, it could save lives. >> building the system in california is expected to cost

this looks okay in both directions. no major problems here heading south to highway 92. westbound 580 out of livermore looks good but there is slow traffic on highway 84. there has been a crash near the ge plant. stay on 580 and use 680 and you can get around the problem rather nicely. 6:33 let's go back to the desk. new details, pam. >> they are emerging about a suspicious man seen lurking around a san leandro school. he's suspected of lewd behavior at an elementary school. tara moriarty is joining us from the school. >> reporter: a source tells us that this older man who was seen peering at a kindergarten class while touching himself inappropriately was quite brazen. he was doing this as parents were standing very close by.

waiting to pick their kids up from school. this happened wednesday around 1:45 in the afternoon when a students grandmother noticed a suspicious man standing in the schools hallway here at 1500 dayton avenue. the witness says he was looking through a window into a patio area where kindergarteners were playing and appeared to be touching himself. when the man saw the witness looking at him, he walked off campus. now police haven't be able to confirm if the suspect is a parent or guardian of a student. apparently he's been seen around here before. the grandmother told the principal about the incident right away but investigators were not immediately notified. apparently the grandmother was very upset about that, that police were not identified. we are waiting to hear back from the principal to find out exactly what happened. live from san leandro i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news.

time is 6:34. a hijacking scare for a passenger on a virgin australian flight tried to break into the cockpit. the pilot heard the passenger banging on the cockpit door he sent a hijack alert to air traffic control. the flight crew determined that passenger was just drunk. they handcuffed him. the plane did land safely at the bali airport. he's been identified only as a 28-year-old man from australia. pleasanton police warning parents that someone is targeting teenagers on social media asking them to share explicit photosover themselves. the pleasanton school district says several students say they were solicited on instagram for photos the school district sent out a warning letter to parents advising them to talk to their children about internet safety. >> you don't know those people. they could be potentially harmful.

>> unfortunately i think many learn the hard way. it's a different world. it's a world i don't know. >> they are working with instagram to identify the account. the school district believes the person lives outside the community. happening now hundreds of people have been camped out in oakland. but in less than a half hour the doors will open for a free health clinic in oakland. alex savidge is live at the coliseum with more on why this event is so important. >> reporter: people are anxious to get inside. the doors will be opening up at 7:00 this morning. here's the folks that have been lined up for a very, very long time. many have been camped out overnight. hundreds of people here in this line. they are here to receive free medical service at this clinic. they will get medical and dental services. it's all offered on a first

come, first serve basis. that is why people were here last night. some people about 9:00 last night they showed up here for this event. it's called bridges to health. inside more than 500 health care professionals will be donating their time. we are showing you video here of a past event. among other things people can get routine checkups, they can get x-rays done. physical therapy and dental work as well. several people told me they came down today to get new glasses. for those without health coverage events like this mean everything. >> really appreciate it. and i i thank them for it. because you know this kind of poor community. >> and this event is put on by inventive services and industries and again the doors will be opening to the public or to the people who are

seeking medical care less than a half hour from now at 7:00. but what you are seeing right now are the medical professionals that will be taking part in this event and putting this event on. again hundreds of health care professionals from around the bay area are taking part here and offering their services free of charge this morning. the event starts at 7:00 and runs until 2:00 this afternoon. live this morning in oakland alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. we are learning it was a san jose state university football player who suffered second degree burns in an apartment fire we first told you about yesterday morning. jared leaf of martinez ran through a wall of flames inside his apartment to escape. now he has second degree burns on 20% of his body. he is still in critical condition this morning at valley medical center. investigators think his roommate may have accidentally started that fire by disguarding a match near the

couch. 11 students living in that building are now burned out of their homes. the 84-year-old man accused of opening fire could make his first court appearance as early as today. police say he's a former patient at the medical facility and that he fired a shot at one of the doctors working there. but there is still no official word on the reason why. no one was hurt. many rooms at the hilton hotel in santa clara feature views of the new 49ers stadium and it's already sold out for the first home opener september 14th. managers say that is likely to be the case at many hotels for several key matchups. >> thanksgiving day which will be the busiest and most

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time is 6:46. sonoma county supervisor carrillo says he was hoping to have sex with his neighbor when he went to her house just before dawn wearing only underwear and sex. he denied he ever peered inside the woman's apartment last summer but the supervisor did admit knocking on her bedroom window. he blames alcohol for his bizarre behavior that-- that night. his case is now in the hands of a jury. time is 6:46. let's check in with tori campbell to see what is coming

jose neighborhood. ktvu janine de la vega you just arrived in the area near mount pleasant road and rocky mountain drive. what is going on? >> reporter: yeah they have the whole neighborhood quarantined off. about 36 homes effected and we just saw a team of officers enter this neighborhood. they have three canines and there is five canine officers with them. they believe that there are two men who robbed two different 7- elevens this morning hiding somewhere in this neighborhood. so right now they are doing a yard to yard search with those dogs. knocking on doors. this first robbery happened add about 4:40 this morning. the only report we have is that it was two men wearing dark clothing. at the same time there was a suspicious persons report that happened in this neighborhood. somebody reported there was two men and it looks like they were casing cars in this neighborhood. and then shortly after that at

welcome back. time is 6:55. new reports says the search for the missing malaysian airlines jet could take years. that is what a u.s. defense official told the news. current search efforts have turned up nothing and the search enters a tougher phase.

he says searching wider areas of the ocean where the plane is believed to have crashed could drag on for years. it's been almost two months since that plane disappeared with 239 people on board. time is 6:55. ordinary walk home from work became anything but for an oakland man. now he is a hero. 54-year-old lonnie monroe says he was walking home when he saw a young man squeeze through an opening in a fence on a freeway overpass and walk out on to a narrow edge. monroe says the man threatened to kill himself. when the man started to climb out on to the freeway sign he knew he had to act quickly. >> i just grabbed him and i gave him a hug around his waist and i just kneeled down and held on to him. i said i will be right here holding you. >> the video posted to

instagram showed the traffic backup as police and fire crews shut down westbound 580 and rushed over to help. several lanes were closed for a half hour. police are praising a san rafael woman who did not fall victim to a telephone scam. >> the woman asked us to only identify her as bobby. she played a voice mail for us. it was left by someone preparing to work for the marin county sheriffs department. when she returned his call the man said she was being fined for failing to show for jury duty. >> then he says to me i tried it the nice way with you, bad choice. now we will have to go the hard way. >> reporter: what is the hard way? >> who knows. and then he threatens to come to your home. >> now she phoned police who
