i'm claudine wong. >> good morning, i'm mike mibach. let's check in with rose mayor youry. good morning to you. starting out with a glorious rise with the sunrise. enjoy the sunshine because the clouds will be thickening up. we have rain coming back our way as early as tonight. let's take a look at some of the rainfall totals, a brief moment other in what we saw in the last 24 hours. areas like napa taking 8/tenth and concord 7/10ths, half an inch over the santa cruz mountains, and good rain fell yesterday and more to come. for today at least the here and now we're going to be dry and cool. that's the fact and story at this hour. take a look at these numbers, 37 in santa rosa, 41 in napa and temperatures 10 to 15 degrees colder than yesterday. if you have an early morning

soccer or baseball game check out doors, it could be chilly with what that sunshine yesterday. for the afternoon we're looking for increasing clouds and it will remain on the cool side. mid-60s in concord, 65 in fairfield, 66 in antioch, as we get no the evening hours we'll see rain, if you have evening plans, this to consider. i'll time it out for you. the next storm coming our way will bleed into sunday morning. more on that coming up in just a bit. happening now people are getting free dental work at the fairgrounds from this morning. kelly is live for us at the free event where more than 2,000 peel are expected. >> reporter: 900 people came through yesterday and another 1,000 are expected to come through here to get free dental care. i'll show you a video, and what it looks like inside there. it's active, they got started about a half-hour ago.

there are several rose of work they're doing. they're doing teeth cleaning and fillings, a there is blue curtains, they're doing tooth extractions and minor oral surgery. this event is organized every year. it takes close to 2,000 volunteers to make this happened. 400 dentists are volunteering their time and dental hygienistance other volunteers are part of this effort. the reason there's a demand for these services dental care is expensive. if you have insurance a lot of insurance doesn't cover dental work. one of the dentists say it's part of the reason so many people are coming in now, to get care. >> we've had no adult dental except for a small number of things like extractions. what we're doing today is treating things that could have

been prevented. >> reporter: now, there is still space available if you want to come down here and get care. this is at the county fairgrounds in vallejo. there is no line right now, if people want to come early this morning. they can get in line and get free dental care. the representation is to do it before 1:00, because that's had they'll shut things down for the weekend. . thousands of people had to be turned away from a free clinic in oakland yesterday. people were camped out overnight for the bridges to health event. a thousand of them were able to get dental and health care treatment because organizers say there wasn't enough time to get to everyone. >> the overall turnout at that event shows how many people are uninsured despite the affordable care act. those who missed the march 31st

deadline are going to have to wait until the enrollment period next fall. new this morning, a deadly crash on highway 780 is under investigation. it happened after 12:30 this morning near fifth street. the car lost control and slammed into a guard rail and hit another car and caused that car to plunge 20 feet off the highway. that woman was not seriously hurt. the driver who hit the guard rail was killed and the other two passengers are all right. they're investigating the crash that killed two people. that happened at 1:30 this morning on southbound highway 101 near the willow wood off ramp. the car that may have been speeding went off the ramp and shut down two lanes. in just a few hours from now, there will be a grand opening ceremony for a new police station.

it's part of a 140,000 project paid for by facebook. the social media giant is building its campus a few blocks away. some people in the community say they're concerned that police will give facebook special treatment, and they disagree. >> it allowed us to say, we do have resources now to do things that we otherwise wouldn't have. >> facebook is contributing $200,000 to staff a police officer just for its schools and new security cameras are being put up around the city to monitor the public space. a 71-year-old man decided to take action. less walked on two young men ransacking his house. when he saw one man getting his rifle he ran after him. the postal carrier said he did not want that rifle out on the

streets and this the wrong hand. >> he just dropped it. and i took a dive on him and kissed the driveway and hurt myself a little bit, but i'm all right. >> he recovered the firearm and his belongings, he believes the same two men targeted another home around the corner. san francisco will clean sewer lines as they get ready for more rain. the rain caused slick roads around the bay area. they responded to twice the amount of accidents. in the east bay rain hit many areas, the wet weather did not cause many major accidents. the police department are warning people to stay out of the ocean for the next few days. storm drain run off could push bacteria and viruses into the water into dangerous levels. you could get sick if you go

for a swim. snow was up in the sierra but not everyone was prepared for it after a dry weather. many people were not expect to see snow. there was more than a foot of fresh powder. it forced a closure near the city of reno. >> i'm not prepared for this weather at all. >> some people said they were looking for people to ski and snowboard, but most places shut down for the season. 2,000 people will walk through the city of san francisco to raise aware of the needs of premature babies. it's in pleasanton. the march of dimes in california impacts 300,000 babies each year. they're expected to bring in $9 million for research. here in the bay area 64,000 babies are born each year.

out of those 5800 are born prematurely. 288 did not live to see their first birthday. the drug enforcement administration is launching a drug take back by getting rid of unwanted and unused prescription drugs. it will help pill abuse and theft. the drug drop office are free and anonymous. they cannot accept liquids and needles. only patches and pills. they'll take take backs today from 10 to 2 p.m., pittsburgh, danville and pleasanton will take drugs back today. the sharks will try again tonight to eliminate the los angeles kings after the sharks took that command in the three- game lead. there was a 6-3 win. game 5 scheduled for tonight,

7:00 at the sap center. a game tonight between the warriors and the clippers. the team is using its playoff run to help disadvantaged children in a youth employment program. organizers of the jobs program said their partnership with the warriors help develop employment skills among at risk teens. fans can wear t shirts and cheer on the team. the warriors are contemplating a name change. they announced the plans of a new arena and the team is considering switching back to the san francisco warriors. they'll ask fans for their input on the idea. 7:10, an effort to stop pedestrians deaths in the city is under way. how they hope vision 0 will make the streets safer in san

. a 73-year-old woman is dead after a suv plowed into an icecream shop in orange county. an elderly driver put his car in drive instead of reverse. he drove straight into a crowd of people. there were several people hurt including a 11-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year- old girl. their injuries range from moderate to minor. >> there were three people

sitting on that bench and he went straight into them and crushed them. neither the driver now the passenger was hurt. they stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. the driver was not immediately cited. in the south korean ferry it is aster, it lies on the right side about 240 feet deep on its side. the water is merky and they've recovered 187 bodies so far and 115 people are still missing but presumed dead. authorities have not yet ruled out what caused the crash but they have arrested 15 crew members including the ferry's captain. a helicopter crash in southern afghanistan today killed 5 nato troops. they're investigating the incident, but they will not release details such as the nationalities of the soldiers. sky news in england said that the victims are believed to be

british. this is the deadliest incident for international forces in afghanistan this year. some analysts there's an uptick on attacks killing westerners. three americans were shot and killed at a hospital in cable. they have been identified as a pediatrician and health administrator and an adult son. they were shot by an afghan security guard hired to protect them. a soldier came back for a visit and received a hero's welcome. sergeant carter is the fifth living recipient for a medal of honor, he was awarded with the nation's highest award during a battle in afghanistan in 2009. he suffered from post traumatic stress and is now speaking out about it. >> you see the bad things and

forecast for inland communities, upper 70s to local 80s and low 70s at the coast expected. virgin america is expanding service into dallas. the burlingame based carrier will start selling tickets from dallas to new york's la guardia, los angeles and san francisco international. virgin is in a battle to get two gates at dallas lovely field -- love field. they had to clear the way for the merger with u.s. airways. it comes one month after it was ending service out of san jose, the airline offered nonstop flights to los angeles for less than a year. those flights are expected to end sometime next month. california is ending the top of the list for the highest rates of measles across the

this owner was walking her dog when her dog mickey was putting his paws on a metal great and was shocked. >> when he put his hands on a metal collar, he was shocked too. >> how would you feel if you watched your child suffer and you couldn't do it. >> mickey was rushed to the hospital and was given oxygen. he may not make it. temporary electrical box was put in there to provide electricity to a construction site. they're not sure how it got charged. turning down a prom date was a reason why a 16-year-old girl was killed. a man is charged with her murder. he could be charged as an

adult. he's a 16-year-old boy. sanchez declined to be the date for this suspects junior prom. he is accused of the stabbing. a person was given a chance to have a lap dance in front of the class. lisa smith is charged with having an improper relationship with the student. she told him i love you baby and wished him a happy birthday. the whole thing was caught on surveillance video. >> i don't think it's appropriate to do it in school or outside of school. it's not appropriate. >> that's a cool teacher, she's never done anything wrong. she taught really nice. she was nice. smith has been placed on leave with pay. the school district released a statement saying that the allegations are being taken

seriously. smith's bail was set at $30,000. they're packing up the pompoms and buffalo. they'll not have cheerleaders this upcoming season. five former cheerleaders claimed sexual harassment and lack of pay. they called themselves the buffalo gels and they factored personal expenses and unpaid community expenses, they get $8 and they are suing the team over low wages. rain left things soggy outside this morning and we're still in a drought on the governor is asking for specific things in an effort to conserve. >> if it's going to come back, it's a matter of when. a football player is burned in an apartment fire. a show of support this morning from family and friends. cool and dry this morning

year acted within the law. the man tried to run down the officer as the officer tried to pull him over. the passenger in the car told police that they are not going to get me. the report said the officer made eye contact drew his gun and told him to stop and he revved at the engine and the officer opened fire and killed a man. he was a gang member who killed one man earlier. a software engineer is suing the police department and others, his client was armed with a broom when he was shot at outside his parents home. he charged officers in a threatening manner while holding a blunt object. his attorney says this is a case of extreme police misconduct. a ceo in marin county is

allegedly accused of attacking a 55-year-old man. he claimed his truck hit the bike. he kept beating the man even after the driver was down on the ground. it happened at april 16th. there is no word on the current condition of the driver. los altos police are investigating ten burglaries with the most recent one reported on thursday. the burglars are trying to pry open doors or going through unlocked sliding doors. in two cases they stole the garage door openers from cars. >> it's an affluent community and why are burglars if you want to call them out casing the neighborhood. it scares me. >> police say they're looking at the arrest of two men last

week in santa clara for any possible connection. they targeted dozens of cars and homes. yesterday at 1:30 someone used rocks to break into trucks, cars and houses. police say at least 25 people were victiimized. >> i don't understand why anyone would do this. it's stupid, ruthless and evil. >> i don't even know what to say. nothing like this happened before. >> damage is estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars. if you have information about vandals you are being asked to call antioch police. you can text an anonymous tip to crimes which is 274-637, use antioch as your first word in the text. a man accused of setting a fire in oakland is now behind bars. a man stood near a building

that was set at fire. there were many tips and the arrest of john fits gibbons. the building is owned by uss, and they have not said why he may have started that fire. the arraignment of a city man for a premeditated murder is being delayed untilst. he made his first appearance in court, cameras were not allowed inside. the district attorney said on wednesday he went into a medical building looking to kill his former doctor. he approached kevin wrong inside the building and struck up the conversation. >> he went up and said to him outloud, you gave me a shot a couple of years ago and i'm still in pain and that's when the handgun came out. >> he ran from his former patient. they're requesting a former

court appointed attorney. jurors in the trial, they're split 11-1. he's accused of peak nothing the window or door of a neighbor's house all in the underwear in the middle of the night. the woman's whose window he tampered with was terrified and called 911 during the early- morning hours. he was hoping for sex and blamed his bad judgment on ego and alcohol. they're not sure what his future holds. >> did i dislike him, no, did i want to work with him? yes, do i still want to work with him? >> yes, in the interests of the public. a misdemeanor conviction could bring 6 months in jail and a $1,000. if the jury remains split they may be considering the count of attempted peeking.

they have asked him to come back monday and continue to try to reach a verdict. >> despite the rain, governor brown has issued an executive order that requires new conservation rules. they show the state's water content and the central sierra well below normal. the draft years are still ahead. and it's expected to get worse. governor brown is calling on california to stop wasting water. he's making specific recommendations. he's urging golf courses and schools to irrigate less. he's telling homeowners to clear brush. they're will go also going to fine homeowners who do not conserve water. they would be fine for having brown grass and not watering enough. >> i'm glad no one gets fined, but i would want my money back.

chairs. they're doing some basic cleaning but a couple of rows back they're doing fillings. they're doing some tooth extractions and minor oral surgeries, it takeses 400 dentists, 400 dental assistants to put this together. we talked to dentists here today. the reason there's a demand for these services because dental insurance and dental coverage is expensive. even those who have health insurance don't have good dental coverage included in that. before today, this woman said, she hadn't been to the dentist for more than three years. she found she has an infection in one of her teeth down to the gum and she's getting her tooth extracted. we asked her how long she waited to get treatment. >> i have insurance, but i can't afford to pay for the

deductible. i can't afford it. being a single mom with three kids, i can't do it. >> now, the work is going on right now here at the solerno county fairgrounds and it will be going on throughout the morning. there is space going on if you want to see a dentist and get a cleaning, the issue taking care of, you you're welcome to do that, if anyone standing in line and you want to come and get dental care. we're told this is no line. it's a good time to come on down. that will be closing things up around 3:00 this afternoon. any time between now, and free, come and get free dental services in vallejo, live in vallejo ali kutv news. a free clinic in oakland people camped out for the event. a thousand of them were able to

get dental and health care treatment because organizers say there wasn't enough time to get to everyone. the overwhelming turnout at the event highlights the large numbers of people who remain uninsured despite the implementation of the affordable care act. those who have missed the march 31st deadline are going to have to wait until the enrollment period next fall. the deadly crash is under investigation. it happened just after 12:30 this morning near fifth street. the car lost control, slammed into a guard rail and hit another car causing that car to plunge 20 feet off the highway. the woman was not seriously hurt. the driver who hit the guard rail was killed. the crash shut down the connector between 680 and 07 in both direction force several hours. >> they're investigating the crash and it happened on

. there is no official word yet on the identities of five nato soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan. sky news in england is sighting unnamed sources that they were all british. this is the deadliest incident for international forces in afghanistan this year. some officials add there's a  recent attacks on americans.

a pediatrician and health administrator and his adult son came from the chicago area. the father and son were volunteers. they were shot by an afghan security guard who was hired to protect them. an army man came back home for a visit and received a hero's welcome. >> army staff tie carter is the fifth recipient for his action in afghanistan. he was awared for his bravery during a battle in afghanistan back in 2009. carter said he suffered from post traumatic stress and is now speaking out about it. >> you see the bad things more than you see the good things. there's still bad and good all around. maybe you should focus on the good things and going to counseling and talking to people will help you acknowledge the good things again. >> it means that the military will not be sending carter into

. the bear was spotted thursday night and was seen again on friday morning. a biologist was able to tranquilize the bear and he was brought to folsom lake and released back into the wild. a dog was electrocuted during a bizarre accident in oakland. she was walking her dog yesterday morning when her dog mickey put his paws on a metal great and was shocked. when he put it on the collar he was shocked too.

for the next few days. storm drain runoff could push the levels of bacteria in the water to dangerous levels. officials say you could get sick if you go out for a swim. thousands of dollars worth of dental work for free. services are being given a way right now at the solano county fair grounds. hundreds of volunteers are helping to make this all happen. allie in. >> reporter: this building at the so lappie on county fairgrounds has been transformed into a dental clinic, everything that you find from the supplies to the instruments and equipment. there is about 400 dental hygienists next to us. they are hard at work, and every chair on this row looks like it's filled. and further back in the room, you have 400 dentists with the more complicated work and behind the blue there, they are

doing tooth extractions and surgery. 900 people came through yesterday to get free dental care, and organizers are expecting as many as a thousand people to come through today. this clip sick open to anyone willing to stand in line and get services. dental coverage is expensive. dental care even with insurance, can cost a lot. a lot of people are saying they put off the basic care and cleaning. >> you got rent and other things, and people sacrifice and say i need to do my rent but they sacrifice their health. and you have to take care of yourself. >> we're treating things that could have been prevented. that's always more expensive to treat than to prevent it. >> reporter: a dentist we spoke to said since state health insurance dentical dropped off

last year, they are seeing more people here. one of the things volunteers are doing is helping people sign up for medical and dental insurance before they leave to see if they qualify and they want to make sure people sees dentists more regularly. they will operate the clinic here until 3:00 this afternoon and they recommend that you get here early. thousands of people were turned away from a free clinic in oakland yesterday. people camped out overnight at the bridges to health event. in all, 3500 people showed up for help but only a thousand of them were able to get the dental and health care treatment because organizers say there was not enough time to get to everyone. and that seems to highlight the large numbers of people who

remain uninsured. nearly 1.5 million people signed up for health insurance through the coverage california exchange. but those who missed the march 31 deadline will have to wait until the enrollment period next fall. a deadly crash on 780 in benicia is under investigation. it happened after 12:30 near fifth street. chpsaid that a car lost control, slammed into a guardrail and hit another car causing that vehicle to plunge 20 feet off the highway. a woman in the car that went off the highway was not seriously hurt. the driver that hit the guardrail was killed and his two passengers suffered minor injuries. chp said thole alcohol and speed may have played a role in a carb that killed two people in menlo park on southbound 101 at the willow road off-ramp. the car may have been speeding and went off the ramp and went into trees. the lanes that were closed have

participate in the walk which is expected to bring in $9 million for research. here in the bay area, nearly 64,000 babies are born every year. out of those babies, more than 5800 are born prematurely, and 288 of them do not live to see their first birthday. in about an hour from now, menlo park will hold a grand openinger is mopey for the newest police station, part of a $140,000 project paid for by facebook. the social media giant is building its new campus a few blocks away. some people in the community say they are concerned that police may now give facebook employees special treatment. the mayor said the new station can only be a positive. >> this is more than a like. this means so much to the community. it can't be expressed. >> it allowed us to say we do have resources to do things that we maybe otherwise wouldn't have. >> facebook is contributing

$200,000 a year to police officers just for schools, and new security cameras are being set up that can be monitored by police and the public in the through space. and new information about suspicious activity and students with their instagram accounts that happened in january and february. but it's just now being reported by the students. they are warning parentses to talk to their children about people sending requests to share inappropriate photos through social media. the investigation is extensive and requires a lot of cooperate raising from victims and social media companies and are asking anyone with information regardinged incidents to call them. the drug enforcement administration is launching a prescription drug takeback today. getting rid of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs will help to prevent bill abuse. the drop offs are free and

anonymous but only liquids and patchs and pills are accepted. shark fans will be cheering on the sharks tonight hoping they advance to the western conference semifinals. they will try to eliminate the los angeles kings after a commanding three-game lead, and the kings avoided a sweep with a 6-3 win. game 5 tonight in san jose. down 2 games to 1, the warriors will take on the clippers tomorrow in game 4 of the nba playoff series. the team is taking advantage of the playoff run to help some disadvantaged children with a youth employment program to develop job skills for at-risk teens. they are putting yellow shirts on each of the 19,000 seats at

strong currents are causing problems with the ferry recovery efforts. the ship is at the bottom of the sea which is 248 feet deep in the area. the water is murky and cluttered with debris. 187 bodies have been recovered but there are still 115 people still missing and presumed dead. authorities have not yet ruled out what caused that crash, but they have arrested 15 crew

members including the ferry captain. president obama is reaffirming america's alliance with south korea and spoke to troops in seoul. he criticized north korea for developing nuclear weapons and threatening behavior towards south korea. he is continuing his tour with a stop in malaysia. he is the first u.s. president to visit malaysia in nearly 50 years. an army veteran who grew up in the east bay came back home to visit and received a hero's welcome. army staff srming ty carter is the fifth living recipient of a medal of honor for action in iraq or afghanistan and was awarded with the nation's highest award last year by president obama for his bravery during a battle in afghanistan in 2009. he said he suffered from post- traumatic stress disorder and is speaking out about it.

police in connecticut are investigating whether turning down a prom date is the relationship a 16-year-old girl is dead. maren sanchez was stabbed to death yesterday morning at her high school. a 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and is due in court monday morning and could be charged as an adult. police are looking into reports that sanchez declined to be the

suspect's date for junior prom that was supposed to be held last night but was postponed following the stabbing. despite prom being postponed, friends of sanchez gathered for a beach in connecticut dressed for the big dance in tuxes and evening gowns. many were in purple, the color of the dress sanchez was supposed to have been worn and they released 20 balloons in her honor. a 73-year-old woman was killed after an suv drove into an ice cream shop in orange county. an elderly man accidentally put his car into drive instead of reverse. he drove into a crowd, and several people were hurt including an 11-year-old boy, 12-year-old girl and 13-year- old girl. >> there was like three people sitting on the bench and just went straight into them and crushed them. >> neither the driver nor the passenger was hurt. the driver stayed and

cooperated with police and was not immediately cited. a teacher in houston, texas is accused of giving a student a lap dance for his birthday in front of the class. 42-year-old felicia smith is charged with having an inproper relationship with a student. prosecutors say after she performed the lap dance she told the 15-year-old boy, i loaf you, baby, and wished him happy birthday. >> i don't think that's appropriate. >> a middle school teacher? she has never done anything wrong. she taught really nice. everybody learned. >> smith has been placed on leave with pay. the school district released a statement saying that the allegations are taken seriously. her bail set at $30,000. packing up their pompoms in buffalo. the team will not have

dental clinic. 900 people came through yesterday and the dental clinic is organized by the dental association. one woman said before today, she hadn't been for three years and found out she has an infection down to her gum and had her tooth extracted, and her son had to have his teeth pulled, too. we asked why so long to get treatment. >> i have insurance but can't afford to pay for the deductible. i can't afford it. it's rough. being a single mom with three kids, i can't do it. >> a lot of people, their self esteem is built on their smile. so for them to have healthy teeth would mean a lot to them. for them not to get it done is

run the officer over as the officer tried to pull him over. the report said that the officer made eye contact with mejia and told him to stop, and that's when he reportedly revved the engine and moved towards the officer. that's when the officer opened fire. lowsalitiy on police are investigating 10 burglaries that happened in the last few weeks. the burglars seemed to be entering the homes by prying open the doors or going through uplocked side doors. in two case, they stole the garage door opener. >> it's somewhat of an affluent community. why are burglar, if you want to call them that, out casing the neighborhood? scares me. >> police say they are looking at the arrest of two men last yeek in santa clara for a possible connection. a tech ceo from marin county has been arrested for allegedly attacking a driver in

mill valley. 40-year-old jeff smock was riding his bike when it happened. he attacked a 55-year-old man claiming that the man struck his bike, and witnesses say he kept beating the man after the driver was down on the ground. it happened on april 15th, and there he is. no word on the current condition of the driver. the arraignment for an elderly daly city man accused of attempted pre-med tated murder is delayed until may 1. he made a first court appearance yesterday in redwood city, and cameras were not allowed inside. the district attorney said on wednesday, the defendant went into a daly city medical building looking to kill his former doctor. according to the criminal complaint, he approached dr. dr. kevin wong in the building. >> went up and said you gave me a shot a couple years ago, and i'm still in pain. that's when out came the
