the coast guard scours bay area hours after two small planes collide midair. tonight, one pilot remains missing. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. tonight they've been scouring the water for six hours now looking for a cessna that crashed with a vintage plane. the vintage plane was able to

land safely. but the cessna crashed into the water. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with one of the rescue teams out on the water right now and they are confident. they say they have several things working in their favor. they have sonar capability. the water around here is shallow enough to not get blown around by the wind. the. >> they clipped the wing. probably lost a wing and spun violently and hit the water. >> reporter: harbor master erik johnson sent a boat out to help and said several sailboats were at the scene in minutes. >> tragic, death spin like that the plane spinning that hard. you can't jump out. you can't get away. that's really sad. >> we will be staying out here all day. >> reporter: the coast guard told us they haven't given up

on finding the pilot. >> we're doing the search patterns that would be more effective for finding a person in the water in this area. the cold water and the dark is going to inhibit us. >> reporter: the coast guard is using sonar in the area. a channel 4 to 5 feet. ktvu found video online of the hawker participating in the area in 2009. its pilot survived and is talking to the faa which is in charge with the investigation. that pilot was able to lands safely at the eagles next in ion. the pilots knew each other and had taken part in a air show that took place minutes before the flight. the coast guard is waiting on

air-conditioning to see how long that he they can stay out here -- how long they can stay out here tonight. they've also told us that they've been allowing ships through but have warned them of the wreckage. the company specializes in aircraft restoration and maintenance. members of the sanders family are well known for air racing competing at the national championship air races in reno. and here's the picture of the plane searchers are looking for right now. it's a cessna 210 built in 1965. it is also based at sander's aeronautics. the names of the pilots have not been released. >> reporter: the pilot of that vintage plate that flew back to

amador county knows what he's doing, said searchers. >> all i can say it's a very topnotch pilot, races at reno. they don't use any want to bees there. this guy is a serious pilot. if it was a midair collision it had to be simply an accident. >> that neighbor declined to say much about the incident. but he also said he wasn't at today's air show so he didn't have a whole lot of information about what may have happened. officials with today's air show and half-moon bay said in a statement tonight that everyone associated with the pacific coast dream machine show is terribly saddened by this news. and they hope and pray that the missing plane and survivor are found. >> reporter: it's not known if the weather played a part in the midair collision. >> we had two different weather scenes out there. we had the clouds, light rain

this morning. drizzle and conditions really changing over san pablo bay early into the afternoon hours. this is the map showing you that area. as far as the conditions we take a look at three things coming up for you. the sky conditions, i'll bring up the satellite for you. a few scattered showers right around 3:00 and 4:00. a few scattered clouds and visibility right around 10 miles. not much in the way. no low clouds or fog out there. winds are up a bit. that typical sea breeze, winds out of the southwest. gusting to 16 miles per hour. so a bit of a chop on the bay water. and then also coming up for you right now the tides, we're also watching the tides out there because we had a low tide this evening going up to a high tide after 11:30 to 11:38. with that we have a lot of water pushing back into the bay. just a lot of current out there. but at least at this point the weather conditions not extremely unusual or hazardous at least flying over the san francisco or san pablo bay

new information tonight about the mother accused of killing her infant son in a bay area park. authorities say, she confessed to the crime. police say it is a homicide that is tough to comprehend as

they search for a motive. ktvu's cristina rendon told us what investigators have learned so far. >> reporter: ashley newton's state of mind yesterday morning is a mystery. the 23-year-old admitted she ditched her car and stabbed her 7-year-old boy with a pocket knife. newton was found hours later holding her dead son. the east bay regional park district police chief initially said newton had a history of depression but sergeant tyron davis says that investigators are still trying to determine what that history is. >> we have no independent investigation that she's been diagnosed with any form of depression at all so we're looking into that. >> reporter: we found out that newton's is not employed or is a student. her and her baby's father last saw themselves on friday. one day before she killed her son. >> you never think of a parent

harming their child. i think that's what people are grasping at trying to figure out why this happened. unfortunately that's what our detectives are trying to figure out as well. >> reporter: they plan to charge newton with murder on tuesday. cristina rendon. >> the father of the teenage stow away who survived a seven hour flight in a wheel well says he loves his son dearly and will soon go to hawaii to take care of him. the teen was found on the tarmac in maui wobbly and disoriented. his father released a statement today it read in part, my son like many immigrant children is struggling adjusting to life in this country. our situation was aggravated by our displacement in africa for many years after fleeing our

home country. someone firing either a pellet or bb gunshot at three drivers in fremont just this week. police say two shootings happened near warm springs boulevard in warren avenue on wednesday and thursday night. there was also another shooting on wednesday on spring and warren road. two drivers were injured by broken glass when tires blew out. the drivers didn't see who was shooting at them. >> honestly i can't even think of that. if i were on the street five minutes ago i would not be paying attention to getting shot at. i can't eastbound think of a solution for that unporch natalie. >> fremont police are examining sur surveillance video from near by businesses. at times police departments from throughout the area are struggling to recruit. >> for the amount of money it is, we shouldn't be wasting the
