the coast guard is searching this morning for a small plane that went down in the bay yesterday afternoon following a mid-air collision with another plane. we'll tell you what we're learning about a possible cause for this accident. i support giving them food

"mornings on 2" begins right now. we're live in richmond where a search is underway for the pilot of a small plane that was involved in a mid-air collision and crashed into the

bay. ktvu's alex savidge is -- has been on the scene since 4:30 this morning as we're taking pictures from newschopper2. in two minutes, alex will tell us what the coast guard is able to do now that the sun has come up and we have new information about what may have caused that mid-air collision. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic and steve, you are saying this week will be different, right? >> much different, yes. sunshine and warmer temperatures. today, not too bad. near average on the temperatures. 25 degrees above by wednesday. high pressure is building in. clear, patchy fog, not much. 40s on the temperature. 40s, 50s by 9:00. a little breeze kicking up. tomorrow it will be from 77 to 87 for some. 40s for many. 42, 43, napa, novato, santa rosa, i should say. half moon bay even san jose, livermore, fairfield at 46. a little cool here. not much of a breeze.

there is a little hint of one. all of these so far ten miles an hour except sfo at 10. northerly breeze for half moon bay. there might be a puff of a breeze. overall look for sunshine, clear skies. no rain this week. that's for sure. good rain on friday. it's a dry forecast. the warmer pattern begins today. big jump into tuesday, wednesday and start a cooling trend by the weekend. today, sunshine, nice temperatures. cool, brisk. warmer, though. slight breeze in the afternoon. 70s for many inland and then upper 60s or low 70s closer to the bay. we're starting off with a look at some very busy traffic trying to get into the san francisco area. bay bridge. that's backed up for a 30- minute drive time and most of that time is spent waiting to actually get onto the bridge and some of it obviously is driving across. you will see kind of a thick crowd here. highway 24, the same thing

goes. slowing in la fayette and orinda. your drive time between the 680/24 interchange and the caldecott tunnel is about 15 minutes. we have a new crash in in san francisco. fire department and medics are on the way to 101. the left lane is blocked by an injury crash. look for traffic to start getting slow from at least third streeted a maybe more. as we look at the peninsula, 101 and 280 are about the same with not a lot of slow traffic on highway 92. and in san jose, 85 is beginning to slow, especially after highway 17 heading north. 7:04. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we have new information into our newsroom about the plane crash that happened in san pablo bay north of the richmond san rafael bridge yesterday afternoon. the coast guard is searching for the pilot and the small plane. ktvu channel 2 reporter, alex savidge, is live with new details from the flight community about what might have

caused this crash. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. multiple sources within the flight community tell us that the pilot of that small plane that's still missing may have been trying to take photos of the other plane, that vintage military aircraft just got too close and that's what led to the mid-air collision yesterday afternoon. now, a coast guard boat has been out here searching the waters of the bay throughout the night. we're off point san pablo. that's where the search is taking place, i should say. later this morning, the coast guard is planning to use 3-d sonar equipment to help search for the plane. rescue teams teams yesterday found some debris from the cessna 210 that crashed into the bay following the collision with the vintage plane. the two planes left from half moon bay when this happened. the korean military plane had two people on board. it was able to continue flying after the collision and landed safely at an airport in amador county. those who know the pilot of

that vintage plane say he's highly skilled. >> he's an extremely qualified pilot. i mean, he's top-notch pilot. races at reno. they don't use any wanna bees there. this guy is sa serious pilot -- is a serious pilot. if it was a mid-air collision, it had to be simply an accident. >> reporter: both planes involved in that collision yesterday are owned by the same -- that same company in am ma door county. i believe we're showing you a live picture over the waters of the bay. this is just off point san pablo and you can in all likelihood see a coast guard boat that's been out there. i've been sold -- in fact, i should say we did see a short time ago, a coast guard helicopter up in the air in this area presumably involved in the search. again, they will be using that high-tech sonar equipment later

on today. trying to find the wreckage of that small cessna aircraft that went down into the bay yesterday. we're live this morning in richmond, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> both of these planes are registered at sanders aeronautics based in amador county. it's owned by dennis and brian sanders. their father, the founder of the company, died in a plane rash in reno in 1989. an amber alert has been issued for a 3-year-old girl taken from her mother's car last night right in front of their home in central california. it happened before 8:00 in the small town of hur 0. in. southwest of fresno. now, the chp says the little girl's mother was about to head out to the store when she ran back inside her apartment and left the little girl in the car. when she came back, her daughter was missing. a witness claims she saw a latino man with long hair with that little girl and that he was last seen wearing a red

shirt and a red hat. the amber alert freeway signs, they've not been activated yet because there's no information on a license plate. east bay park police still searching for a motive in the case of a woman accused of killing her 7-month-old son with a pocketknife. police say 23-year-old ashley newton of san jose confessed that she ditched her car on saturday and then stabbed her son at del valle park in livermore. at first, the district police chief said she had a history of depression but investigators are still trying to confirm those details. >> don't ever think of a parent harming their child. i think that's what people are grasping at trying to figure out why this happened. that's what our techs are trying to figure out. >> police say newton last saw the baby's father on friday. newton is due to appear in court tomorrow. 7:08. police in fremont are trying to figure out who is shooting

pellets at cars on a heavily traveled road. it's happening on warm springs boulevard near warren avenue. that's where janine de la vega joins us live to tell us how many times this has happened in fremont. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. i just connected with the police who told me they haven't had any new shootings over the weekend. but they still are investigating the three that happened last week. all of them happened here during the commute hour. the incident started last wednesday in warm springs and warren and warm springs and brown at around 6:30 last at night. two drivers were spot at by bb or pellet guns. their car windows were shot at and both suffered minor injuries. the next night a third driver reported having her driver's side window being shot out. she was uninjured. drivers we spoke to this morning say it makes them feel slightly vulnerable. >> nothing you can do.

somebody is shooting bb guns at you, what can you do? it can startle. you never know when it can happen. >> reporter: none of the victims provided a detailed description. but in one of the incidents there was a white minivan seen in the area. police have examining surveillance video from nearby witnesses who see -- to see if that could provide any clues in the investigation. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:10. now to our continuing coverage of los angeles clippers' owner donald sterling and his alleged explosive remarks about race. a recorded phone call has sterling reportedly telling his girlfriend not to associate with african-americans. >> some new clips have focused where donald sterling defends his relationship with african- american players. >> i support them, given them food and clothes and cars and houses. who gives it to them?

does someone else give it to them? >> the clippers' players staged a silent protest before the playoff game at the arena. the clippers took off their warmup jackets to display plain red shirts. the shirts were worn inside out to hide the logo. sterling was not at the game. golden state defeated the clippers before a wild sellout crowd at the oracle arena yesterday, tying the best of seven series. steph curry had a career playoff. 7 three pointers, five in the first quarter. he responded to the controversy after the game. >> it's all about what goes on on the court. we have dedicated fans that show up every night and to take -- to allow one comment or -- a lot of comments take away from that experience and that part of, you know, this time of

year, it's -- it's not worth it. >> like every other game. it really was. that's not sugar coating anything. >> this controversy affected other playoff games. players for the houston rockets and trail blazers wore black socks last night to protest sterling's alleged racial comments and the naacp has canceled plans to give an award to sterling. the civil rights group tweeted donald sterling will not be receiving a life-time achievement award from the los angeles branch of the naacp. in a separate tweet, the naacp's president said that if you are silent about this, then you are accepting of this. well, in the mean time, president obama is responding to the controversy from halfway around the world. the president had this remark during a news conference in malaysia late yesterday. >> obviously, the nba is a

league that is beloved by fans all across the country. got a lot of african-american players that are steeped in african-american culture. i suspect that the nab will be deeply -- nba will be deeply concerned resolving this. >> the president called donald sterling's remarks offensive and ignorant. the nba players association are taking a hard line in this controversy. brian flores will have that part of the story. that's coming up later this hour. 7:13. a hospital that is the closest source of medical help for many people is shutting down. coming up at 7:30, the drastic measures one doctor is taking to save the facility. also, bike couriers are making a come basketball. we'll tell you -- comeback. we'll tell you why there is a

welcome back. 7:16. more than a dozen people are dead after several tornadoes hit four states yesterday. you are looking at video. this tornado is a half-mile wide in arkansas. 16 people were killed there. one person was killed in oklahoma, another in iowa. there are reports that entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, nothing left behind but the foundation of homes.

also want to show you video of the damage in arkansas. this is incredible. this was shot by a drone. several injuries have listen reported. power lines are down, exposed gas mains, crews are trying to fix them. still, yesterday, was the deadliest day since tornado season started last month. coming up for you at 7:45, pam cook will show you much more and tell you about the obstacles that first responders out there are facing this morning as they search through the damage. 7:17. new this morning, a new york congressman who made headlines for threatening a reporter on camera has been arrested and is now facing federal charges. republican michael graham made that threat back in january after a tv interview during which the reporter asked him about his involvement in a long- running fbi investigation into campaign finance. the exact charges against the congressman have not been made

public. this morning, brim's lawyer said his client will be vindicated. efren carillo is considered to return to court as jurors consider a verdict. he's accused of peeping into a neighbor's window while wearing only his underwear. the woman called 911. he testified that he was hoping to have sex with the woman and blamed his bad judgment on ego and alcohol. a misdemeanor conviction could bring six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. bike couriers are making a comeback in san francisco. companies like google, amazon and ebay, they are using bike couriers to make same day deliveries of the products. company used bike carriers to deliver important documents from business to business. the bike courier industry has had to shift to delivering from businesses to consumers just to

stay in business and stay alive. b.a.r.t. has decided to get rid of a perk that allows top managers to build up years of unused vacation and sick time. that is something that's led to major payouts for retirement. outrage over the practice started last year when the san jose mercury news reported that b.a.r.t.'s ousted general manager dorothy dugar remain on the ray pal for -- on the payroll for two years after she stopped working. speaking of b.a.r.t. and the commute, let's check in with sal. >> good morning, tori and dave. so far it's been a moderate commute. nothing too major in many areas. we have a crash in san francisco we'll tell you about. northbound 101 at alemany. traffic is slow on 280.

you've heard about drilling for oil but what about for water? that's one way people in marin county have decided to deal with the drought. so far this fiscal year, 25 marin county property owners have applied to drill water wells on their land of the that's up from -- up by 5 compared to last year and up by 12 compared to 2011. water officials say many people want to drill new wells since their existing ones have gone dry. in some parts of marin county, people rely on wells as their only source of water. they are concerned with the drought, if the wells run dry, they may have to resort to paying to have water trucked in. here is a great story. every morning students at healdsburg are given a hearty, good breakfast. the man known behind the project known as morning grumble is a very familiar face to a lot of people in the bay

area. >> good morning, everyone. i'm ross mcgowan. welcome to "mornings on 2". >> tori, have you heard that before? >> many times. >> your buddy retired from ktvu in 2009. ross wanted to find a way to give back. one day he was inspired by a dear abby column that talked about feeding children at school. so ross approached the principal at healdsburg elementary and was surprised to learn that the funds for a breakfast meal was available. he just needed direction. >> i have a couple of kids of my own and now i have a grandchild. i can't meage any one of them getting up in the morning and not having something to eat. >> ross says the program only uses healthy, nutritious foods. teachers say since the program began, test scores have gone up and the students are spending

we're live in sebastopol where a bankrupt hospital is hours away from closing its doors for good. you see the sign there and coming up in two minutes, ktvu's tara moriarty will tell us about a patient who may not have survived the night if the hospital had already been closed and she'll tell us about the last-ditch efforts to stop it closure. good morning. welcome, once again, to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk weather and traffic.

steve's right over there. >> i am, indeed. we have clear skies. everything is looking like a beautiful day here. maybe a little cooler here in the morning. it won't take long to warm up. patchy fog. there might be one patch. i should say a patch of fog. it's clear for almost everybody here. sunny and warmer. breezier, not too bad. some of the inland locations, pushing the to the upper 70s. tomorrow, 80s. santa rosa, 42. napa, 43. novato is in there. half moon bay, 46. same for livermore and walnut creek. it's clear here. layers today. but by this afternoon, by the -- in the sun it will be nice and warmer. temperatures beginning to head out. warmer, just a little breezier. 70s through the interior. upper 60s near 70 around the bay. we'll have more on this big warmup for wednesday in about ten minutes. here's sal. we're still looking at traffic that that's at the peak of the morning drive to work here. let's go to westbound 24. the traffic there does look a little bit busy in la fayette

and orinda. it's about a 12-minute drive time between those two points. also at the bay bridge toll plaza, that's about a 25 to 30- minute drive time into san francisco with no major problems. san francisco itself northbound 101 at alemany, there is a crash. but 280 is backed up beyond the san jose avenue offramp. it will be closing to ocean geneva. plan for that if you are driving in san francisco. 7:32. let's go back to the desk. it is a big hit in a bad way to people who depend on the hospital in sebastopol. that's because starting right now. they are gonna have to travel farther to get medical help. tara moriarty live at palm drive hospital where patients, tara, they are being turned away. what's going on? >> reporter: well, the ambulance is here, the paramedics are on standby because no one is being allowed inside palm drive hospital. we want to mention that last night a heart attack patient came by here and emergency personnel say that he might not

have survived if he had had to go all the way to santa rosa which is about a half-hour away. now, if we take a look at video that we shot inside the hospital just a few moments ago, the staff is devastated. they knew this day would come but it's still not easy. many expected palm drive to close before midnight. late yesterday the hospital's ceo moved the closure to noon since there were patients here at the time. right now there's no one. the board has voted for bankruptcy and closure. again, that ambulance is stationed outside to transport anyone who show ups at the closest hospitals in santa rosa. those are a half-hour aday. doctors here say they only had a couple of days' notice. do you feel a bit broadsided? >> yeah. that's why i think it's so difficult to accept this. we were not given adequate warning. these are wonderful people. we won't be able to recover the

people who had to find other jobs. >> reporter: april 14th, about 100 people showed up to try to develop a plan to save the hospital. after a couple of days of talk, the board's president said there's too many hurdles to come. they are planning to occupy palm drive hospital. they want to continue to treat patients after the shutdown. we did speak to a lady who pulled up a couple of minutes ago. we'll have her thoughts and share them with you in about an hour. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. the vallejo police department reports two chp officers were fired at after a traffic stop just before 1:00 yesterday morning. the officers had stopped the car on lincoln road west near the magazine offramp of 880. the driver of the gray buick

got out and ran. as officers talked to the passenger, they heard fire or sicket gunshots. neither officer was hurt. the driver was found and arrested. friends and family continue to mourn the victim of the deadly crash between a fed-ex truck and a high school tour bus. yesterday, a funeral was held for one of the victims. her twin was on the same trip but was traveling on a different bus. ten people were killed in the head-on collision. the ntsb released its initial report on the crash on friday but the cause is still under investigation. now to our continuing coverage of l.a. clippers' owner donald sterling and his alleged remarks about race. the clippers' players staged a silent protest before the game against the warriors at oracle arena. the clippers took off their warmup jackets and displayed plain red shirts worn inside

out hiding the loet go, a strong -- logo, a strong display of unity sending a message to the owner and donald sterling was not at the game. current and former nba players are speaking out about the alleged comments. brian flores is in the studio to tell us how a legend has come up with a resolution of its own. >> that's right. magic johnson has expressed interest in purchasing the clippers. that is if the nba decides if donald sterling can no longer own the team. but experts say it could be problematic because it could start a long, legal battle. what's next? well, this is unprecedented from the nba standpoint there's no realtime table but the commissioner says he wants to take swift action in resolving this issue. this morning the players association remmed by current sacramento mayor and chairman. nba players association kevin johnson calling for the maximum penalty allowed by the legal.

they are calling for the league to ban sterling from attending the rest of the playoff games but they are asking the league to include sanctions against him including a hefty fine and/or spen shen. >> when you have an owner, they are in a position of influence. players are working very hard to be good at their craft. but every time we have a playoff game, there's dollars to be made. if the dollars go into the pocket of an owner who doesn't value and respect players that is very problematic. >> this all started when sterling's boif posted a picture -- girlfriend posted a picture a picture of magic johnson with his girlfriend. >> i support them and have given them food and clothes and cars and houses. who gives it to them? does someone else give it to

connecticut, police arrested the couple on saturday after a disturbance at their home. paul simon is 27. best known as simon and gar funkle. his wife is edie burkle. we have new information about this baby bear that tori will want. it was mysteriously dropped off at an animal rescue in tahoe. i told you, tori. >> pretty cute. >> the wildlife center says a man called, said he's the one who dropped off this bear cub on april 16th. he says he found the bear, hugging its dead mother near humboldt's redwood state park. when the cub arrived at the wildlife center, it was evenly ten weeks old. it only weighed five and a half pounds. the center is getting reddy to release had -- ready to release it back in the wild.

a search for a survivor. the gadget rescuers are using to try to find a pilot following a crash over san pablo bay. the stormy weather we saw on friday turned into powerful and deadly tornadoes and moved across the midwest and southern u.s. in the past 12 hours. we continue to follow developments as rescuers sift through the debris searching for survivors. we're still looking at a busy commute all over the bay area, especially here in san jose. northbound 280 is pretty slow. we'll tell you more about the south bay commute -- straight ahead. this week, the future is so bright you are gonna have to wear shades. it will be wall-to-wall sunshine. it will be hot, i mean really hot on wednesday. i will have the details coming up.

welcome back. the teenaged stowaway from santa clara may be coming home to the bay area very soon. his father who says he loves his 15-year-old son dearly will soon go to hawaii to bring him home to santa clara. yesterday his father said, "my son like many immigrant children is struggling to adjust to live in this country. our situation was agra vateed by our displacement in africa after fleeing our home country." searching for survivors. rescue workers are having to dig through piles of debris and all that's left of neighborhoods across the southern part of the country. pam cook is in the newsroom with a look at the damage and the challenges the rescue

workers now face. good morning, pam. >> good morning. several tornadoes touched down, one in arkansas wiped out an 80- mile stretch through suburban little rock and killed 16 people. incredible video captured of the huge tornado. it's about a half-mile wide. this was shot by a storm chaser as it crossed a freeway yesterday afternoon. entire neighborhoods have been destroyed with nothing left behind but the foundations of some of the homes. emergency crews are now faced with many obstacles as they try to find survivors and help people cope with the loss. currently, they are dispatching fire and police out to go to the scenes, make sure they are safe. we'll experience a lot of gas leaks, a lot of power lines down. we did have power -- we do have power out for most of the city. >> one person was killed in the northeast corner of oklahoma. another person killed in iowa. president obama is praising the work of first first responders.

weekend. 7:49. today, president obama in the philippines announcing a new ten-year military agreement between the u.s. and the philippines. president obama appeared today with the president of the philippines at a news conference. now, the two leaders had this new military agreement that calls for the u.s. to help the philippines boost their defense capability. president obama also announced new sanctions against russia because of the continuing crisis in ukraine. >> these sanctions represent the next stage in a calibrated effort to change russia's behavior. we don't yet know whether it will work. >> now, just a couple of hours ago, the white house released information on these actions which include, sanctions on seven russian government officials and freezing the assets of 17 russian companies. new information about the deadly ferry boat tragedy in south korea. now we're learning that three members of a shipping industry trade group may have destroyed

evidence connecting it to the company that operates the ferry. those people have now been arrested. this is also new video showing the ship's captaining being rescued on the first day of the disaster. a kawg officer did not know at -- coast guard officer did not know it was the captain he was rescuing. this video shows some of the searchers ears underway search for that ferry that sank. so far, 188 bodies have been recovered. 114 are still missing. south korea's prime minister has resigned. he says he is taking responsibility for the initial slow reaction to the ferry sinking and disappointing the public. during his announcement. he apologized on behalf of the

morning when his car veered into an orchard, north of vacaville. that followed the deaths of five people and four separate crashes on saturday in benicia, el cerrito, oakland and menlo park. the chp says alcohol and speed may have played a role in the crash in menlo park early saturday morning. the driver lost control on highway 101 near the willow road offramp. the female driver and her male passenger were killed. police were struggling to control the crowds of petaluma's annual butter and egg parade and festival. police arrested one person for being drunk in public and broke up more than ten fights. the police responded to a report of vandalism and alcohol being stolen from a grocery store. now, that event celebrates all things grown, hatched incubated and raised in petaluma. three people recovering from burns after a grease fire erupted in the kitchen of a burger king restaurant in downtown san francisco. you are looking at video from a

ktvu camera in the city. now, the fire started about 2:00 yesterday afternoon on powell street. workers say the flames shot from the overhead ventilation system. one of the ka sheers jumped over the counter just to get outside. most of the damage was contained to the ventilation system. things got heated at this weekend's nascar race in richmond, virginia. >> there's shoving going on. there is a punch, a swing. >> casey mears and marcos finished 18th and 19th in the race. the two were involved in a tense confraentation when mears shove -- confrontation when meres shoved him -- mears shoved him. nissan is developing what's called a self-cleaning car with the type of paint. so dirty water that hits the car never sticks.

not much of a breeze. most locations say calm. it's all going to turn easterly or northerly. i would not be surprised to see warm temperatures. in san francisco as we get towards wednesday. today it will be sunshine and mild to warm temperatures. sunny and -- what is going on? i take these jumps it's -- ibt not me -- it's not me. i don't know what it is. here's sal. right now we're still looking at a commute that is busy and getting busier on this monday in some areas. for example, look at the sunol grade. all of a sudden, we have a lot of slow traffic heading south there with no major problems. but a lot of people trying to get into the south bay. just wait until i show you the map. i want to show you that traffic is also slow in the approach to san francisco. it's getting better, though. right now, westbound bay bridge. that's about a 25-minute drive time. it was a little worse a little while ago. there's hope for the drive into san francisco. now, check this out.

look at the south bay. almost everywhere you look, in the last half-hour, it's become superslow and crowded. 85 to 80. look at bullpen. it's backed up from almost blossom hill road in a solid line into mountain view. do you know anyone who is driving this. they will probably be in a slightly bad mood when they get to work. back to the desk. >> looks like a christmas tree there. a rescue operation is on the bait this morning for a small plane that crashed into the water. it happened after a mid-air collision with another plane north of the richmond san rafael bridge. alex savidge is live with what we're learning about what might have ed up to the collision. >> reporter: -- led up to the collision. >> reporter: several sources are telling ktvu that the pilot of that small cessna airplane may have been trying to take photos of the other airplane involved in the collision. that was a larger vintage military airplane. we understand that the smaller aircraft may have gotten too close to the other plane.

that's when the collision happened. we've been told by sources that the plane of that cessna may have been torn in the collision. right now, we want to show you the seen out over the bay. this the scene over the pinpoint the san pablo. where a search is going on. there are two coast guard boats in the water. we've seen the coast guard helicopter flying through the air searching for that missing plane that went down in the water yesterday. the coast guard did tell me they found some new debris overnight but still no sign of the plane or the pilot who was on board. searchers are planning to use 3- d sonar equipment to help search for the plane's wreckage. >> it's like concrete at that speed. cessna airplanes, pretty light planes. when it hits something that hard, it's gonna come apart. >> reporter: and that cessna crashed into the bay following that catholic with the vintage military plane. they were both leaving and

event in half moon bay when it happened at 4:00 p.m. yesterday. the korean war milt plane had two people on board. it was able to continue flying after the collision. it landed safely at an airport in am ma door county. both planes -- amador county. both planes are own wood i the same company. right now the faa and ntsb are involved in the investigation. i have reached out to federal investigators. i'll trying to talk to them about a posh cause for the crash. we're waiting to hear back. but again, the search continuing in the bay. still no sign of the missing plane. the coast guard still consider this a rescue operation at this point. we're live in richmond, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:05. an amber alert has been issued for a 3-year-old girl who was taken from her mother's car last night in front of their home in central california. it happened before 8:00 this small town of huron southwest of fresno.

the chp says the little girl's mother was about to head out to the store when she ran back into her apartment and left the little girl in the car. when she came back to the car, her daughter was missing. a witness claims she saw a latino man with long hair with that little girl and that he was last seen wearing a red shirt and red hat. now, the amber alert freeway signs have not been activated by because there's no information on a license plate. east bay park police are still searching for a motive after a woman is accused of killing her 7-month-old son with a pocketknife. police say 23-year-old ashley newton of san jose confessed to ditching her car on saturday and then stabbing her son at del valle park in livermore. at first, the east bay regional park district police chief said newton had a history of depression but investigators are still trying to confirm the details. >> don't ever think of a parent harming their child. i think that's what -- that's

what people are graspingal trying to figure out how this happened. that's what our detectives are trying to figure out as well. >> police say newton last saw the baby's father on friday. she's expected in court tomorrow. unsuspected drivers in fremont are being targeted by somebody with a pellet gun and the police are searching for whoever is responsible. it's happening on warm springs boulevard near warren avenue. that's where ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live now to tell us a lot of people say they feel helpless now. >> reporter: yeah, they do. a lot of people use warm springs boulevard during the commute hours an these shootings happen during the evening commute. a lot of peek i spoke to said it's upsetting because they feel like there's nothing they can do to protect themselves. there's been three incidents. they started last week at around 6:30. two separate drivers reported being shot by a bb or pellet

gun. their car windows were shattered. the next night a third driver traveling in the same area reported having her window being shot out. she was uninjured. one local driver had a message for the person who is taking shots at cars. >> i would say you need to stop it. that's -- you will hurt somebody and even worse -- i don't know if you can live with it. but if you hurt somebody to the point where you hurt somebody, that's not a good thing. >> reporter: in the first two incidents, the drivers suffered minor injuries. none of the victims could provide a detailed description of the suspect or the vehicle. there was a white minivan seen in the area. police are looking at video from nearby businesses to see if that could provide any clueser other the weekend, police say there have not been any new incidents of shooting. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news.

says that might explain why seven of the nine democrats who hold office in california come from the bay area that includes, lieutenant-governor gavin newsom and attorney general kamala harris. a new report shows high school graduation rates improving in california but more needs to be done. researchers at johns hopkins university put together the building a grad nation report. it says california pushed its graduation rate to 79% in 20. 2% -- 201. 2% increase from earlier. challenges remain especially among english language learners. one out of every three students from that group end up dropping out. california educates one-fifth of the nation's low healthcare income children and more latino students than any other state. seattle is known for its coffee but it turns out san francisco has beat its rival to the north. in a stu study revealing which study has the most coffee

felt warmer in the sun but official highs were 60s. today it will be 60s and 70s. add at least 10. maybe 15. 50s for the temperatures. we have one upper 40. but santa rosa made it to 40. there were 40s up in lake county. already beginning to warm up. mid-50s for some. not much of a breeze. most locations say calm. if travis says calm that tells you inland temperatures are warming you. i'll mention a slight breeze but there's not much. all of the cloud cover is heading up north. chilly morning but giving way to a warmer afternoon. really pleasant. 60s and 70s. tomorrow and wednesday big jump on the temperatures. today, 60s and 70s. here's sal. right now we're looking at a commute that has traffic still slow in many areas. i want to show you that traffic is going to be slow on 580 still coming in through the livermore valley and into dublin and then some slow

community. tara? >> reporter: yes. 86-year-old woman now having to drive to santa rosa. she's devastated. loves the hospital. we're in front of palm drive where there are paramedics standing by. the doors were closed to close but here we have dr. james good. he set up this makeshift. dr. good, you say you are going to take patients. >> not just myself but a group of physicians at palm drive hospital. we have an organization in which we're going to do the following -- we're gonna keep the momentum of critical care going on. we developed an emergency room outside of the emergency room. this is the triage desk. any patient who comes here, i will see certainly. i'm headof the icu here and i refuse to let critical care stop in the west county. so what we'll do is have a continuing of care as follows -- anyone who comes here to be

seen, i will see or one of my colleagues will triage them. either to go to dr. power's office which we've made an emergency room height there. >> how long are you gonna do this? >> until they reopen the hospital. >> reporter: and you are confident about that. >> we're not bankrupt. the doctors have given a proposal. the bankrupt is the pass. there is a steel wall between that bankruptcy and our proposal. we have a physicians' proposal. we have $2 million at our disposal. we have right now about $1.5 in the basmg. we'll take over the -- bank. we'll take over the hospital and run it by physicians and from thing with welling of ideas coming up from physicians we believe in three months we'll have a positive cash flow here and i believe that perhaps the powers at be are

with a rifle on that campus. now, according to a university spokesperson, the man was spotted inside of a campus building that police are sweeping and evacuating that building. again, this is breaking news from north carolina. we'll keep following this story and bring you the latest details from north carolina a and t as soon as we get them in. 8:36. back here at home, family members and friends still mourning the victims of a deadly crash between a fed-ex truck and a high school tour bus on interstate 5. yesterday, a funeral held for one of the victims. her name is marissa sorado. her twin was on the same trip. she was riding on a different bus. ten people were killed in the head-on collision. the ntsb released its first report on the crash friday but the cause of the crash is still under investigation. there's a new development in our continuing coverage of donald sterling and his alleged

racist remarks. in the last hour, the ceo of state farm spoke on a los angeles radio station saying the insurance company will pull its sponsorship of the clippers due to the controversy over these racial remarks. yesterday, the clippers' players staged a silent protest before yesterday's playoff game against the warriors at oakland's oracle arena. the clippers took off their warmup jackets to display red shirts to hide the clipper logo. while the nba decide donald sterling's future, many fans are speaking out against the controversy owner. brian flores is live in the studio with why they say this is bigger than basketball. >> good morning. the people we talked with are wondering what kind of discipline can come out of this. some are asking norg the ouster of doneald sterling. some experts say that could be problematic because it could start a long legal battle.

your time. 8:44. let's bring you up to date on some of the top stories we're follow fogger you. the coast guard busy searching for a small plane and its pilot after yesterday's crash into san pablo bay. it happened yesterday afternoon. that plane, a cessna 210 collided with a larger vintage military plane in mid a. now, lz -- midair. alex savidge is live with more on what the pilots of the

planes were doing before the crash. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. we're learning from multiple sources within the flight community that there is a distinct possibility the pilot of that small cessna had been trying to take some photos in midair of the other plane involved in the collision. that was the military vintage plane and it sounds as show in the process of trying to take the photos according to source, the pilot got too close to the plane and that's when the collision took place. we understand that the left wing was born torn and the -- was torn and the plane plummeted. there is a helicopter in the air searching for the plane. there was some new debris found overnight but still, no sign of the plane or the pilot who was on board. and searchers are planning today to use 3-d sonar equipment to help search for the plane's wreckage.

the cessna crashed into the bay after a midair collision with the vintage. the two planes were leaving an event in half moon bay. the keon war plane had two people on board. it was able to continue flying after the collision. it landed safely at an airport in amador county. a friend of the pilot who was at the controls of the military plane says he's highly skilled. >> he's an extremely qualified pilot. i mean, he's a top-notch pilot and races at reno and, you know, they don't use any wanna bees there -- wannabes there. he's a serious pilot. it had to be an accident. >> reporter: the two planes are owned by the same company. the faa and the ntsb right now are involved in the investigation into this crash. i've reach out to both agencies to ask them about a possible cause for the crash and ask

of the devastation in may flower, arkansas. that's where the governor is. just spoke a brief time ago about what's being done to help people dealing with great loss. >> nothing will be spared to ensure that, first of all, search and re coverry continues -- recovery continues and then security issues and then the rebuilding and cleanup issues. >> reporter: the governor says a lot of local restaurants and big companies including walmart and ty son foods are setting up stations to help the people who have lost their homes. i want to show you video also of the damage. this was in arkansas taken by a drone of the path of destruction a half-mile wide. one person was also killed in another tornado in the northeast corner of oklahoma. one person killed in iowa. and several were injured in kansas where nearly 100 homes were destroyed.
