a severe weather system is bearing down on the southeast, threatening millions of people. 40million people are in the line of the storms. this is a live picture here of the conditions in mississippi right now. and what we want to show you now is new video of a tornado in tupelo, mississippi. much of the state will be under a tornado and flood watch through the night and into tomorrow. i want to bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin for more on this. bill? >> big deal event in the south. the tornadoes have been ramping up all day and they will continue into tomorrow as well. look at the line of the thunderstorms. 40million people in the way of the storms. a strong line of thunderstorms. we are coming up on 500 miles from end to end. measuring it out. 500 miles. come in close. these are storm reports. show you the tornadoes, all these areas here, a tornado in

a hearing in the case of a woman accused of killing her daughter. last weir her lawyer -- week her lawyer made a motion to release her from jail. she and her boyfriend are charged with the both death. both are held without bail. no word on when the court will make a decision. high school gradiation rates reached a high in california but falling start of the state's goal according to two new reports. the superintendent says just over 80% of california students graduated last year, up from 79% in 2012. that is a 2% increase from two years earlier. the increase is an indication the state is on its way towards reaching its 90% graduation

packages to the 1,000 employees who work at the headquarters in torrance. toyota has been headquartered there for 30 years. the governor of texas made two visits to california trying to convince companies here to move to his state. new information tonightoon deadly crash over -- tonight on a deadly crash. police identified the two people killed. the chp believes alcohol and speed played a role in the crash. they think he was speeding when her car hit a tree, launched into the air and hit another tree. she went off highway 101. detectives searching for a suspect after a man was shot to death in a driveway. police found him outside a home. they airlifted him to a hospital where he died last night. he was 32 years old. so far his name hasn't been

camp -- refugee camp. she hasn't seen her 15-year-old son for several years. she says the boy's father took him to california without her knowledge in 2006. saying he demanded my consent for him to take the children to the u.s. if i wanted a dorse. i was not okay with that and said no. her son was told his mother was dead and learned she was alived -- alive. seeing mom is why he stowed away in a wheel well of a plane. his mother says she wants to see her son again, adding my son was silent but intelligent when he was with him. >> officials say she passed her first interview with the list of those who might qualify for

he was spraying for bugs. the search for malaysia airlines flight 370 is shifting to the ocean floor. they are scouring the indian ocean today looking for signs of debris but the prime minister says that nothing has been found so far and at this point it is unlikely air crews will ever find anything. predict contractors will be hired to cover larger area. this will cost $60 million and could take up to 8 months. the search for bodies from the mudslide in washington come to an end with two people missing. it was a difficult decision. 11 people were rescued the day it happened, march 21. 41 bodies have been recovered since then. they must clear debris from a mile long stretch of highway and that could take three months. developing story we brought

tonight toinvestigates -- 2 investigates crime scene tape and a shortage of it in one bay area police department. there is so little in oakland officers have to reuse their yellow crime tape from one crime scene to the next. ktvu's eric rasmussen explains why it is raising larger concerns. >> reporter: when we told some people officers are reusing crime scene tape they thought

we were joking but officers aren't laughing. sometimes they can't get the tape when they need and we found money likely isn't the issue. >> reporter: immediately recognizable. a universal warning, do not cross. traditional crime scene tape is yellow and black but officers in oakland say it is like gold. for two months 2 investigates observes officers balling up used tape, putting it in their cruisers only to pull it out again. listen to what one said to a ktvu channel 2 news photographer.
