starts. san rafael 87. the record is 90 in 1947. livermore 92. sfo, which was 90 yesterday, 87 today. the record is 89. gilroy 94. that is 5 shy off a record of 99 in 1996. downtown oakland was 91. a couple low 60s. temperatures running a couple degrees cooler here. it's still pretty warm if san francisco. it's 64 in the sunset district and 70 west of twin peaks. there is warm air. that west wind hasn't kicked in yet but it's itching to go. it's raring to go but it's not here yet. high clouds. warm to hot again. another day of some 80s and 90s. closer to the coast more 70s than 80s. good morning. right now we have a crash that just cleared out from oakland freeways and we watched it clear up near oak street. the crash is gone but the traffic is a little bit slow. the good thing about this particular stretch of freeway

is it clears up almost immediately after a crash is moved. the bad news is just down the road sometimes this has a deleterious affect on the traffic. we will see what happens. this is the bay bridge toll plaza. it is backed up for a 20-minute drive time into san francisco. south bay commute is surprising me pleasantly. there is a little bit of slow traffic on 85 and 280 and 101 but it's not all that bad as you drive through. maybe they are just starting later. 680 is backed up. an earlier crash at pleasant hill on the shoulder. we have a look at some of these drive times here. you can see that 580, which is the drive time which is the longest, 580 grant line road to the 586/80 interchange 40 minutes plus. back to the desk. 7:09. a south bay man is behind bars accused of kidnapping two women and this morning we are hearing from one of the victims. ktvu's alex savage is live with

more on how this young woman managed to get away. good morning, alex. >> good morning to you. an incredible story. this young woman says her accused kidnapper was forcing her to drive around and she made a dramatic escape by intentionally crashing the car they were in so she could get help from police. we talked with the victim in this case. 19-year-old daniella alvarez who is a sophomore in college. she showed us a bruise on her arm from this man. a man she doesn't know came up to her house near san jose or in san jose, i should say, answered asked for a ride to his father's house in mountain view. alvarez says that 23-year-old man, kenneth the middle brook, said he was in the army and had a suspended license and that's why he couldn't drive. she trusted him and agreed to give him a ride. after they got to his father's house alvarez middle brook's

mood quickly changed. he became angry and threatened to kill her. >> i mostly couldn't believe what was happening. like it all happened so fast. i wasn't even like -- i was in shock. like i honestly thought that this guy was normal. like he's from the army, you know. like i never expected him to try to hurt me or anything. and he seemed so normal. >> reporter: and even though middlebrook seemed sincere middlebrook seemed sincere she learned she can't trust anyone. she deliberately crashed the car the two were in on a car in a freeway here in the south bay and the other driver involved in that crash then called 911 and she got away. after that freeway crash, though, mountain view police say middlebrook drove off by himself and investigators say at that point he abducted another woman. a 61-year-old and forced her to drive to a small town in the

sierra foothills. that second victim eventually managed to escape as well and police took middlebrook into custody. investigators say they are trying to figure out if there are other victims possibly connected to this case. now, coming up for you at 8:00 this morning on mornings on 2 we will tell you what that young victim did when the man accused of abducting her told her to get into the trunk of the car. live this morning in mountain view, alex savidge. time now 7:06. later today mayday marches are planned all over the bay area. thousands will march and rally in san francisco, oakland and san jose protesting for workers' rights and the rights of undocumented immigrants. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live in the south bay. and huge mayday protests are held everyier. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. some people are hesitant to talk about how they feel about immigrants being here illegally and working. others understand the struggle.

here in san jose we usually have a very large turnout, and today this is one of the gathering places, at story and king roads, where people march for immigration reform. this is video from last year where hundreds rallied for change in immigration policies. it's a tradition every march 1. today state leaders, undocumented workers will march to city hall. there are events planned at city hall in san francisco and fruitvale plaza in oakland. last night organizers there were making banners and preparing for the day's events. they are highlighting the struggles of hard-working families who have been separated from loved ones because of deportation. one man we spoke to this morning says he can relate. >> i don't have annum preg like that. but i know people who have that and it's hard, you know, because of the kids, they get separated

from the fathers, you know. it is really hard. >> reporter: those who are participating in today's event say they are still seeking good jobs that pay fair wages. they are fighting displacement as home prices sky rocket. the events in the area are expected to be peaceful. police in oakland blame past problems on a few troublemakers and say they will work to keep things safe. here in san jose the events begin early with a news conference at 1:30 this morning. a mass at our lady guadalupe at 1 p.m. there are speakers that will talk at the church and the march starts at 4 p.m. janine de la vega. a berkeley man has filed a federal lawsuit. he is accusing oakland police of using excessive force during a mayday protest in 2012. 67-year-old russell bathes claims he was filming the rally and says police officers knocked him to the ground and

repeatedly beat him with their batons. he says he suffered a concussion and has post-traumatic stress disorder. mayday demonstrations have become violent in turkey. police tried to break up the demonstration using tear gas and water canons. the protesters were angry about a government corruption scandal. about a half hour ago amnesty is international blamed the turkish government saying the peaceful march was cut off by a human wall of riot police. it is 7:09. tonight the berkeley city council will hold a special meet to go discuss raising the city's minimum wage. right now berkeley businesses must pay workers the state minimum wage of $8.00 an hour. the mayor is proposing a raise to $10.04 in november and it will go to $11.20 next april. then adjust to $12.25 the following year. that would put it in line with

proposals currently being considered by oakland and richmond. the city of san francisco is asking the public to weigh in with ideas on how to balance the budget. san francisco mayor ed lee and the board of supervisors will hold an online town hall meeting today to get the public's ideas about the budget process. the city is facing projected shortfall of more than $66 million this fiscal year. the online town hall meeting starts at 9:30 this morning on the mayor's web page and his youtube channel. meanwhile, the city of san francisco has reached a tentative contract agreement with one of its larger public employee unions. it could serve as a template for agreements with 27 other city union contracts up for renewal. ispte local 21 covers about 3300 city planners, contract compliance officers, and health educators. the tentative agreement includes raises of at least 8.5% combined over the three-year term of the contract.

it still has to be ratified, though, by union members. tori, time now 7:10. it's official now. the oakland unified school district has a new superintendent. last night antoine wilson was approved unanimously by the school board. for the past five years wilson was the assistant superintendent of the denver public school system. the school board spent a year searching for a new superintendent. wilson beat out 20 other applicants. his first day on the new job will be july 1st. and his four-year contract comes with some very nice perks. free lodging for six months in addition to paid moving expenses. a monthly allowance of $750 for local travel. free healthcare premiums for himself and for his family. and $56,000 in bonus payments. this is all on top of the $280,000 a year salary. it is 7:11. soldiers are rushing to get

vegetation in those areas that are, you know, rare and endangered type species that just require us to be careful when we are working around them. >> mandatory evacuations have been lifted. voluntary evacuations, though, are still in place. meanwhile, one person was killed in a brushfire in san diego county that also forced evacuations. firefighters found a badly burned body yesterday afternoon while responding to a fire near a homeless camp in national city. a woman who lives in the camp says the victim may be one of her friends. >> i can't find her. she is not anywhere. >> investigators plan to return to the scene of the fire later today to search for the cause and to try to find out more about the person who died. the fire did burn about an acre. no homes were lost. starting today top new water ration inning in santa cruz. the city has been warning the reservoirs are very low and they say people have to get serious

alternative i would suggest 580, which still not that bad. you are going to be waiting a little bit. i would go 580 instead of 880 at this point. let's look at the toll plaza. 25-minute drive time between the end of the line at the toll plaza and the san francisco exits. 680 still slow. we had an earlier accident in pleasant hill. highway 4 is also slow and a couple of minor incidents there. we are also looking at some of the drive times. 24 still looks good from pleasant hill to the tunnel. 238, 880 from fremont 21 minutes. then 580 westbound from grant line road holding steady at 40 minutes. a very, very good morning before we get started. not a puff, not a breath of a breeze, nothing. a little shot out to littlely. rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? she is my go to source at verizon wireless at walnut creek. i have been having issues with my phone and today is her birthday. happy birthday.

more 70s on the coast than the 80s. i think it's a little tricky by the coast. that's the toughest forecast when that seabreeze kicks in. the cool really starts on saturday and carries us into next week. 7:21. a newly released email indicates white house officials wanted to shape the way the attack on the u.s. consulate in ben gauzily libya was for raid. it contains advice on how u.n. ambassador susan rice should talk about that incident in her tv appearances. four americans, including u.s. ambassador chris stevens, were killed in the attack in september 2012. now, in that email rhodes focuses on the protests going on in the middle east at the time it over an internet video. republicans have long accused the white house of trying to minimize the role of terrorism in that attack while president obama was campaigning for re-election. it is 7:21. a city street collapses in

bay bridge where you have a 25 to 30-minute drive time. a 30-minute drive time into san francisco. and a look at the peninsula. 101 doesn't look bad. 280 is a good drive. but 880 slow traffic beginning at 238 here. i am going to put this more front and center. 880 traffic will slow out of 238 down to about decoto road. let's go back to the desk. as you have been hearing steve say all morning this is going to another hot day today. cal osha already issued a first heat advisory of the year. parts of the bay area have seen fallout from the soaring temperatures. tara moriarty live in anitoch this morning. tara, overnight there was a grassfire? >> reporter: that's right. we are off to a rough start this year as far as fire season goes. high fire danger season shouldn't kick in until the end of i may, beginning of june.

behind me you can see that there are some char marks there in the hillside where we had a grassfire overnight. the contra costa fire department tweeted out a photo of the three acre fire that started midnight. it happened at james boulevard and pin tail drive. luckily, no homes were threatened. we spoke to a fire marshal by phone earlier this morning who says that wildfire preparedness week kicks off this weekend. >> california's truly a year-round fire state. we just have low periods of burn and high periods of burn. and it seems like high periods are staying of longer throughout a 12-month cycle than previous years. >> reporter: meanwhile, there is an alert for firefighters and others working outside today. cal osha has issued a heat advisory for the first time this year. temperatures are expected to be 15 to 25 degrees above normal. that means employers need to ensure that workers have plenty

of water, shaded areas for breaks and an emergency illness heat prevention plan. coming up steve will let you know how hot it will get in your neighborhood. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 7:35. a disturbing incident and a warning for families in nevada and marin county. parents say two men tried to lure a 5-year-old girl away from her a park. they say it happened on saturday while the girl was playing in a little league game near rancho elementary school. now, according to a letter sent out to families two men were seen walking the girl to the parking lot, asking her if she wanted to have dinner with them. the girl's mother noticed her daughter wasn't at the playground and screamed her name. she says the girl ran back and those two men took off in a white s.u.v. >> asking her if she wanted to have dinner with them. so it was very disturbing. >> now, police are investigating. they are also encouraging parents to keep a real close eye on your children.

it is 7:35. toronto mayor rob ford is taking a break from his re-election campaign and his duties as mayor to get help for alcohol problems. ford's announcement last night came hours after a newspaper reported on a new video that reportedly showed him smoking crack cocaine. this follows another video released last year that also appeared to show ford smoking crack cocaine. the city council stripped him of most of his power as mayor, but ford ignored calls to resign, instead announcing he would seek another term in office. this morning there is mounting pressure for sonoma county supervisor korea to resign. a crowd of 40 people including two santa rosa city council members held a rally yesterday calling for him to step down. earlier this reek carrillo was acquitted of charges of peeking into a home of a neighbor while

only wearing his underwear and socks. he admitted he was hoping to have sex with the woman. airports up and down the west coast trying to get back on schedule this morning after a major computer problem in southern california. >> all flights are back on at lax. >> this is a scene at los angeles international airport late yesterday. the faa says a computer problem grounded flights in and out of airports in the l.a. area for more than 90 minutes. ktvu's heather holmes and her photographer, they were trying to fly home from los angeles. they got caught in the middle of this mess. they did find a lot of other people from the bay area also stuck at the airport. >> we have been here for four hours. we are supposed to be on an 11:30 flight. >> our flight has been laid four hours. >> the lieutenant governor also stuck at lax.

warriors on the brink of elimination but we know that's not going to happen. in terms of the latest in terms of donald sterling sometime today a panel of nba owners will dial into a conference call it to discuss the league's next move against donald sterling. this call will essentially set the date for a formal meeting for the nba owners that could take place within the next couple of weeks. every single owner at this point supports commissioner adam silver's call to force sterling to sell the team. as you can expect, sterling reportedly working on some legal roadblocks to prevent that from happening. who could own the team? that is the other big question. that has a bay area connection as well. oracle ceo larry ellison reportedly along a group with david geffen and oprah winfrey to buy the team. in 2010 ellison tried to buy the warriors but it was without success. now it's time for the good stuff. we are talking about the game of course. tonight's game between the clippers and warriors tips off tonight. this is a must-win for our w's. they are down three games to two in the best of seven.

the donald sterling saga appears it to be attracting a huge number of national tv viewers to the clippers- warriors playoff series. sunday's game four was the first time the two teams played since sterling's racist comments became public. that game drew 6.5 million tv viewers nationwide. that's up a whopping 48% from game one of the series before the scandal and then tuesday's game five was a week night played hours after nba's commissioner announce add lifetime ban for sterling. that had more than 4.7 million viewers and that was the best rated playoff game on cable this season. this morning the san jose sharks and their fans, they're hurting. the sharks lost. >> pierson. he scores! >> yep. the sharks loss of the l.a. kings 5-1. the sharks are eliminated from the nhl playoffs at sap center.

baltimore that caused a street to collapse sending at least ten cars down an embankment and on a train track. take a look. homes in the area have been evacuated. crews check foundations and gas lines for damage. more than 3 inches of rain has fallen in baltimore since tuesday afternoon. in alabama the rising waters forced some people to rush to their rooftops to wait to be rescued. roads were also washed away leaving drivers stranded and their cars. almost two feet of rain fell in 24 hours in some southern states and there may not be a break in the weather any time soon. 6 more inches of rain could fall by friday. >> water was coming in through our garage and the back doors and flowing in out through this door. >> the national weather service says almost 16 inches of rain fell tuesday in pensacola, florida. that's the most rain to fall in that area in a single day since 1880. this is incredible.

time now 7:46. we are following other developing news. this coming out of pensacola, florida, this morning. there was a huge deadly gas explosion at a jail. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with more on this horrendous scene, pam. and investigators say the weather may be to blame? >> yeah, we have some new video this morning showing just how bad that gas explosion was. it happened at a jail in pensacola, florida. two people were killed. at least 100 others were injured, including some corrections officers. now, the blast happened late last night and caused part of the escambia county jail to collapse. investigators say severe weather in the area may be to blame. >> the building received extensive flooding as a result of the rain. i don't know if that's directly related to the incident that happened this evening or not. we'll be doing an investigation to determine that. >> now, 5 inches of rain fell on

pensacola, florida, in just one hour. and the whole area has seen severe flooding. so that certainly is part of the investigation. now, about 600 inmates were in the jail at the time of the explosion. we heard from a reporter on the scene just about an hour or so ago who says all of the inmates have been accounted for and moved to jails in neighboring counties. in our next hour of mornings on two some comments from family members about what was happening in the jail right before that explosion. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook. time now 7:48. it's been six weeks now since that landslide devastated a small town of washington state. now people in other areas are worrying there is not enough being done to protect people from the next big slide. >> if we were willing to throw more resources at it, we could do a much better job of understanding where those potentially big hazardous landslides are. >> now, eric rasmussen of 2 investigates reported from that slide area. since he came back home he has

early next week federal investigators are due to release their report about last weekend's midair collision of two private planes over the san francisco bay. late yesterday the salvage crews pulled up a cessna 210 out of the san pablo bay. the body of the pilot was still inside. sunday afternoon the cessna collided with another plane. a vintage hawker c fury. the pilot and the passenger landed safely at an airport 40 minutes after that crash. >> right now we are in the fact-finding phase. so that's what we're doing. we are documenting this airplane. we are documenting the sea furry. we are getting witness interviews. >> now, the two pilots involved, they were friends. they were coming back from a weekend airshow in half moon bay. it is 7:57. a south bay kidnapping victim speaks out exclusively to ktvu. >> and screaming help me, help me, help me, this guy is trying to kill me.

this young woman thought she was going to die. she says she was forced to drive around her accused kidnapper in a car and the only way she managed to escape was by intentionally crashing. she agreed to give this man a ride because she thought he was harmless and then suddenly he snapped. >> he said i am going to snap your neck if you are not quiet. he was squeezing me and i was just freaking out. >> reporter: we talked late last night with the 19-year-old victim here, daniella alvarez, who is a sophomore in college show. showed us a bruise she wound up with during her struggle with this man. alvarez says it began on sunday when this man game to her home in san jose and asked for a ride to his father's house in mountain view. he said he was in the army and that he had a suspended license so he couldn't drive. she trusted him. she agreed to give him that ride. after they got to his father's

house alvarez says middlebrook's mood suddenly changed. he became angry and then threatened to kill her and began to choke her as well. and then she says he told her to get in the trunk of the car. >> i just kind of tried to reason with him mostly and i was just, hey, you have a suspended license. you can't drive. like let me drive. you know, i knew if i gave him any control in any way that he was just going to take over and then i would be done. like i just -- i really thought this guy was going to kill me. >> reporter: eventually, alvarez escaped by deliberately crashing into another car on the freeway here in the south bay and the other driver involved in that crash then called 911 and police showed up and she was able to get away safely. but after a freeway crash police say middlebrook drove off by himself and investigators say after that he abducted another woman. a 61-year-old woman, and forced had her to drive to a small town in the sierra foothills. and that second victim did

house, whatever, she approaches and asks you for money. >> police say that now they have an idea where to find the suspect they will be continuing in the investigation. it's continuing right now. police are also searching for a gang of thieves in sacramento that needs just a minute to steal an atm. now, we fast-forwarded this surveillance video you are looking at of a recent break- in. in less than 70 seconds three men broke into this convenience store, they ripped out the car machine, and hauled it away in a van. there have been at least three atm thefts in sacramento in the last two weeks. one machine contained $700. it is 8:06. tonight the berkeley city council will hold a special meeting to discuss raising the city's minimum wage. right now berkeley businesses must pay workers at least the state minimum wage of $8.00 an hour. the mayor is proposing a raise to $10.04 in november. it will go up to $11.20 next

april and adjust to $12.25 the following year. that would put it in line with proposals being considered by nearby oakland and richmond. the city of san francisco is asking the public to weigh in with ideas on how to balance the budget. san francisco mayor ed lee and the board of supervisors will hold an online town hall meeting today to get the public's ideas about the budget process. the city is facing a projected shortfall of more than $66 million this fiscal year. the online town hall meeting starts at 9:30 this morning on the mayor's web page and his youtube channel. and the city of san francisco has reached a tentative contract agreement with one of its larger public employee unions. it could serve as a template for agreements with 27 other city union contracts up for renewal. ispte local 21 covers about 3300 city planners, contract compliance officers, and health educators. the tentative agreement includes raises of at least 8.5%

combined over the three-year term of the contract. it still has to be ratified, though, by union members. time is 8:07. it's official. the oakland unified school district has a new superintendent. last night antoine wilson was unanimously approved by the school board. for the past five years wilson has served as the assistant superintendent of denver public schools. after tony smith stepped down they spent a year looking for a new superintendent. wilson beat out 20 other applicants his first day on the new job will be july 1st. now, his four-year contract comes with some nice perks. free housing for six months in addition to paid moving expenses. a monthly allowance of $750 for local travel. free healthcare premiums for himself and for his family. about $56,000 in bonus payments. and this is all on top of the $280,000 a year salary.

8:08. may demarches are happening across the u.s. and in the bay area. thousands will take to the streets of san francisco, oakland and san jose demanding workers' rights and immigration reform. janine de la vega is live in the south bay where not everyone is familiar with the message behind the march. >> reporter: i have been talking to people and asking them if they know what may day is. when i explained it's about immigrant rights and workers rights, some are hesitant to talk. others understand the struggle. while the demonstrators are going to gather at story and king road and this is where they are going to kick off their march today. it has been held may 1st every year. thousands walk the streets rallying for change in immigration policies. san jose, faith and union leaders and undocumented workers will march to city hall. there are also marches in san

francisco and fruitvale plaza in oakland. last night organizers were making banners and preparing for the day's events. they are highlighting the struggles of hard working families who have been separated from loved ones because of deportation. we asked people how they feel about the demonstration. >> i have family across the border and some that have migrated here to california. it is nice to see that somebody is leading their people. actually having them unite. >> reporter: if it benefits them and it's going to get them to get a job to support their family, then that's fine. you know, i don't think they are taking away any jobs because if there is nobody working there, they are fighting for those jobs. >> reporter: those who are participating stay they are seeking good jobs that pay fair wages. they are fighting displacement as home prices sky rocket. the events in the bay area are expected to be peaceful. police in oakland will be out in full force making sure things

8:14. we are following developing news in southern california where fire danger is still high due to hot and windy conditions. a brushfire is currently threatening homes in rancho cucamonga just north of the 210 freeway. we just learned within the past hour the fire is now 10% contained and two firefighters suffered minor injuries from eye irritation while battling this fire. firefighters are also concerned about wildlife and rare plants in the area. >> various animals and/or vegetation types that are in those areas that are, you know, rare and endangered type species that just require us to be careful when we are working around them. >> mandatory evacuations have been lifted but voluntary evacuations are still in place.

one person was killed in another brushfire. this one in san diego county. it also forced evacuations. firefighters found the badly burned body yesterday afternoon while responding to a fire near a homeless camp in national city. the fire burned about an acre. no homes were lost. people living in santa cruz will be subject to strict water rationing starting today. the city has warning the reservoirs are low, so they say people have to get serious about limiting their water use. especially outdoors. people in single-family homes are now limited to just 249 gallons of water a day. households of fewer than four people can use 60 gallons per person per day. if customers go over the allotments they will be charged $25 for the first 10% and $50 for each 10% above that. time is 8:16. speaking of water, commercial fishermen are happy. it's a start of their salmon

this morning pressure is mount forge sonoma county supervisor efron carillo to resign. there was a rally yesterday demanding that he step down. earlier this week carillo was acquitted on charges of peeking into the home of a female neighbor wearing only his underwear and his socks. during the trial carillo testified he was hoping to have sex with the woman. he blamed his bad judgment on his ego and alcohol. happening today it is a must-win game for the golden state warriors as they face the l.a. clippers tonight at oracle arena. they are down two games to three in a best of seven series. ktvu's brian flores is live on the court at oracle to explain how the racial scandal has changed the tone of this series since the last time the warriors were home. >> reporter: some would say it has gone towards the momentum of

welcome back. time is just about 8:43. let's bring you up to date on some of the top stories we are following now. may day protests around the country and here. thousands are expected to join marches calling for immigration preform and workers rights. marchers are planned in san jose, san francisco, and in oakland. and a man has been arrested. accused of kidnapping two south bay women, and now one of his alleged victims is talking exclusively to ktvu about the frightening ordeal. our reporter alex savidge has been on the story since 4:30 this morning. you are joining us live now to tell us how the victim says an intentional car crash may have saved her life. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning,

dave. a frightening situation certainly for this south bay woman who says she agreed to give a man a ride and wound up being held against her will. she says this man threatened to kill her and then at one point told her to get into the trunk of the car, but she managed to convince him not do that. >> if i gave him any control in any way he would take over and i would be done. like i just -- i really thought this guy was going to kill me. >> reporter: that's the 19-year-old victim, daniella alvarez. a sophomore in college. she showed us a bruise she wound up with during her struggle with the accused kidnapper in this case. everything began sunday when this man came up to her near her house in san jose and asked for a ride to his father's house in monsoon view. that man, 23-year-old kenneth middlebrook, told her he was in the army and had a suspended license and couldn't drive. she trusted him and agreed to give him a road. after they got to his father's

house his mood shifted. he became angry and started to choke her. eventually alvarez escaped by deliberately crashing into another car on the freeway and having that driver involved in the crash call 911. this young woman said she learned a hard lesson during this close call. you can't trust anyone no matter how sincere they may seem. >> i didn't think anything was going to happen. i thought i am helping this guy out and i have nothing to do. why not? and so then they obviously know that it was bad and that what i did was wrong and i should have helped someone. i know it sounds mean, but the world is not what it used to be. and, i mean, i can't help them any more. >> reporter: and even after alvarez escaped police say that middlebrook continued this string of creams. he, according to investigators, abducted another woman he came

across. a 61-year-old woman who he forced to drive out to a small town in the sierra foothills. once they got to that town police say that second kidnapping victim managed to escape and police were able to track down middlebrook and take him into custody. investigators with the mountain view police department also say this is an ongoing case and they are trying to figure out if middlebrook may have abducted any other women. live this morning in mountain view, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:46. we continue to following develop news from florida. the severe flooding along the gulf coast may be to blame for a deadly explosion at a jail in pensacola. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with a clue from inmates inside the jail that something may not have been right. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. two people were killed. at least 100 others were injured, including some corrections officers, when what is -- in what is being called a gas explosion. it happened at a jail in

pensacola, florida, and caused part of the escambia county jail to collapse. 600 inmates were inside at the time of the blast. all have been accounted for. those who-not injured have been relocated to nearby jails. now, as we've been reporting florida received nearby 20 inches of rain in less than two days and investigators say that may be to blame for the explosion. >> the building did receive extensive flooding as a result of the rain. i don't know if that's directly related to the incident that happened this evening or not. we'll be doing an investigation to determine that. >> reporter: now, several family members of the inmates say there were complaints of a strong odor of gas a couple of hours before the blast. one woman says a friend inside the facility told her that the county was using temporary generators to cope with power outages from the recent storm and that could be the source of the odor. now, there are reports that homes three miles away from the jail could feel that blast. reporting live in the newsroom,

pam cook. we have breaking news right now. a spokesperson for the san jose police officers association just told us that a judge has granted an order delaying implementation of the stays pension reform measure until july 1st, 2015. over a year away. measure b was passed by san jose voters back in 2012. it has been a huge source of conflict between city workers and city leaders ever since. the san jose police department, in fact, has said hundreds of police officers have left the force because of the cuts in benefits and pension. we will continue covering this new development online at ktvu.com and in our newscast throughout the day. and this is actually an issue all over the state and all over the country. the pension reform debate. >> that's huge. and you will be talking about it at noon. >> yeah. 8:48. let's talk with sal. highway 24, how are they doing? >> well, it's looking okay.

welcome back. early next week federal investigators are due to release their report on last week's midair collision of two private planes over the san francisco bay. late yesterday salvage crews pulled a cessna 210 out of san pablo bay. the body of the pilot was still in that plane. on sunday afternoon the cessna collided with another plane. it was a vintage hawker sea fury. the pilot and passenger landed safely at an airport 40 minutes after the crash.
