be an interesting case and it will be complex. two kidnapping charges will be the start of a legal case for this man who made his first court appearance here this afternoon. cameras were not lowed inside where kenneth middlebrook was charged with two counts of kidnapping and charges of burglary, robbery and assault. the charges of two kidnapping attempts, a 61-year-old woman and a 19-year-old san jose woman, daniela alvarez who talked with ktvu about his actions when he first asked her to drive him to his father's house and wouldn't let her go. >> i was trying to reason with him, calm him down. he snapped. out of nowhere. he snapped. he came over me and attacked me and he didn't say anything. he let me drive. drive the car! >> is this a complicated legal case? >> it is difficult to tell at this point. there are serious charges the

violating federal law. ktvu's john sasaki in berkeley tonight and talked to one of the stupidities who filed a -- students who filed a complaint against the school. >> reporter: university of california at berkeley today, one student said the school known for its education is known for problems with sexual assaults. the school on a list released today by the u.s. department of education. 55 schools under title 9 investigation for inadequate handing of sexual assault cases. >> i know so many survivors. i will see people i know that are perpetrators. >> she was among the students who filed federal complaints against the school. >> i can't wait to see what the results are. >> we met several woman who are calling for change. one is friends with a woman who was salted. >> i wept -- assaulted. >> i went to support her to the

mosquito. we started seeing them earlier because the weather just didn't take care of them like normally winter would. >> reporter: neglected pools and anything else is breeding grounds for mosquito. >> i was wondering because i thought -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: one of these has 400ation. meaning this pool could -- 400 eggs, meaning this pool could protect thousands of mosquito. >> they could put people 5 miles away at risk of west nile virus. >> reporter: last week a bird tested positive for west nile virus. >> only one bite for one kid and we are in trouble already and we have children. children are playing there. >> draining standing water is key to keeping mosquito away from your home and west nile away from your family. >> we don't want anyone to get

sick. we want mosquito to flourish. >> that pool took 100 mosquito eating fish. a container will take less. you can pick them up for free. cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. dozens of northern california gang members are facing charges after being picked up in a gang sweet. department of homeland security said 600 people were arrested. many are from the bay area. the sweep netted gang members from concord, daly city, fremont, hayward, san francisco and they have been indicted on racketeering charges, murder and attempted murder, weapons and drug violations. pg&e is reporting lower earnings and higher expenses. the company's 1st quarter profit fell 5% as cost tied to its natural gas business off set increased revenue. pg&e reported a profit of $230

million and that is down from 240 million. pg&e is facing criminal charges relating to the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. those charges could carry fines of $6 million or more. >> back now to our may day coverage of celebrations and protested rallies. news chopper 2 is over a crowd that is marching in san jose. the location here allen rock and 101. you see a number of people, dozens, hundreds. it looks like they are on the over pass here. again walking on the over pass of allen rock avenue and 101. many marchers are carrying signs, walking in groups, for many marchers this is about immigration rights and trying to stop families from being separated. ktvu's noelle walker talked to two brothers who found out their mother was deported

police officers on the look out for animals left in hot cars. ktvu's christien kafton went on one of the paroles. >> the major concern is dogs left inside cars on hot days. we will do a test. it is reading 90 degrees right now. we will go ahead and put this inside the car. we will see how the temperature looks in a couple minutes. that major concern, dogs left in vehicles, protecting dogs from lethal temperatures inside closed vehicles. >> the law is there to protect the animals. who will speak for the animals? you know, it is the caretakers of them and the police. >> reporter: police tell me they had a case in the last few years where two dogs died after being locked inside a vehicle.

officers are responding to calls about dogs in distress and saying officers are looking at vehicles parked in shopper centers and in the business district looking for people who left their dogs. police can break the windows of a car if they think a dog is in danger. they issue a citation and give an information pamphlet on keeping dogs safe. dog owners are vigilant, especially when temperatures creep up like they have this past week. >> short car trips. i never leave them in the car when it is hot out. i do if i have to run a airhand it is cooler. i will -- errand, it is cooler. >> reporter: go ahead and check that temperature now. in the last couple minutes that we left, it crept up by 3 or 4 degrees. the condition inside of a closed vehicle could get dangerous quickly. police say if you take your dog

neighborhood -- rampage in a bay area victim. new at 5:00 p.m. two dogs attacked two separate people. police say she was attacked first along nun street at 9:30 a.m. this morning. the second attack was a block away 10 minutes later. ktvu's ann rubin is live where she talked to the victim. >> reporter: some neighbors won't walk on this side of the street because they are afraid of the dogs and today what they feared happened when the dogs got loose and ran right at a neighbor walking his own dogs. >> these dogs are eating my dogs and now me. >> he was terrified two large dogs began to attack his dogs and then him. he put his pets on a truck and hit the dogs till they ran off.

over downtown san jose where the may day celebration is focusing on immigration reform. thousands of people joined the march. news chopper 2 showing us people marching down the street. this is by san jose state university university. they have been marching over the past hour or so in a western direction. we will continue to monitor the situation. we expect to have a live update on ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. we are now hearing more about washington's reaction to a tsa document showing san jose airport is meeting security requirements. it came three weeks before a teen climbed a fence and stowed away on a jet liner in the wheel well. barbara boxer questioned the tsa chief about the findings. >> you cleared them and that is troubling to me.

tonight 2 investigates a effort to predict the next marriage landslide in the bay area. we aren't immune to the deafen station that -- devastation that struck washington earlier this year. ktvu's eric w is here now with what is being down to understand the chances of a similar event in the bay area. >> reporter: they have mapped thousands of smaller landslide all over the bay. the trick is figuring out when a landslide will go rogue and become deadly. for familiar areas here are -- four particular areas here are getting special attention but that may not be enough. >> reporter: when the hillsides

started to move in oso washington there was no warning. >> looked exactly like someone took and set a bomb off. >> reporter: ktvu got a look at a one square mile area of trees, homes and people wiped out. firefighters told us volunteers are working in five feet of mud. that is up to here on me. he took us behind his house. >> mud was -- came through right through that gate. >> reporter: where there are still reminders of a landslide in 2006 that turned this water into a fast moving river of mud. >> it went through his neighbor's house. >> first heard of it when she pounded on my door, 5:00 a.m. or whatever. said there was mud all over the backyard. >> that year another slide killed a man. 2 investigates found a record of thousands of landslide from

the east bay to the north bay and on the peninsula. the u.s. geological survey maps slides. ialo dots indicating landslide in 1998 -- yellow dots indicating landslide in 1998. storms in 1982 set off deadly slides. blue dots, including love creek where 10 people were killed and dozens displaced. >> sometimes the hill that is behind your house does something unexpected. >> reporter: he says predicting landslide is far from an exact science. like oso in washington, the site of a massive landslide in 2005 had small slides -- smaller slides years earlier -- >> why did fail so big so fast? >> reporter: the soil works like a big sponge. it could absorb plenty of water

with no problems but when it starts to drip, is when experts are concerned about a possible slide. >> this instrument here is designed to measure when the dangerous pressures occur. >> the usgs set up four stations in high risk areas. marine county, east bay, san bernardino mountains and pacifica. while scientists stop short of rankings the areas with the highest landslide risk they are monitoring stations they are most concerns about. those stations send real time information back to the usgs. but it is short of a true early warning system. >> the government spends less than $3 million a year on its national landslide program. >> if we were willing to through more resources at it we could do a better job. >> reporter: an extra
