now at noon -- fire investigators describing what they found at the scene of a deadly mobile home fire in sunnyvale. and what we're learning about the people who lived there. despite extra police at two bay area schools, the district is recording a shockingly low attendance numbers. the graffiti that was found that kept so many students at home. and in just a few hours, president obama will be in the area. why his visit is set to include a special trip to walmart.

right now, fire investigators are going through what's left of a mobile home in sunnyvale where an early- morning fire tore through the unit killing two people inside. the son of one of the people killed was able to get out alive. ktvu's janine de la vega has been on the scene all morning and talked to neighbors about the people who lived there. she joins us live. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. it's incredibly sad for this mobile home park community. neighbors say three people lived inside this mobile home but only one escaped alive. the task force is here. you can see them there sifting through the debris to figure out how this started. twisted metal and charred wood are heaped in the pile of rubble close to the entrance of this mobile home park on borregas avenue. a fire ripped through the home. firefighters discovered the body of a man, a woman and a cat. >> we don't have the identities

on the people. but we suspect it could be the parents. >> reporter: a man in his 50s lived her with his mother and her boyfriend. police got him out safe at 2:00 a.m. surrounding neighbors were evacuated as firefighters worked to put out flames. >> it went up so fast. >> reporter: police interviewed the son. there was problems communicating because neighbors say he has a mental disability. the red cross was brought in to help. once daylight service and firefighters started to remove degree, they made the grim discovery. at this point, sunnyvale's department of safety says there's no indication of foul play or the fire being suspicious. while investigators try to figure out a cause, this tight- knit community is thinking about the son. >> he's gonna have to be taken care of by somebody. and from what i understand, they don't have any relatives either. i don't know that for sure. but that's what we heard. so yeah, our thoughts and prayers are with him. >> reporter: the coroner has removed the bodies but the

identities of the desessed have not been released yet. police and firefighters expect to be here for the rest of the day to handle this. reporting live from sunnyvale, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. threats naming today's date, may 8th, as the day a dozen people would be killed prompted a heightened police presence at two danville schools. ktvu's tara moriarty tells us that despite the extra security, attendance is way down, down 50% today, in fact, at both campuses. >> reporter: police made themselves visible to students headed to class this morning. >> it will be interesting to see what our attendance is like. >> reporter: after the morning numbers were tallied, attendance was counsel at baldwin elementary and charlotte wood. >> some people we know are choosing to keep their kids at home. at the same time, we don't have any reason to believe any of our schools are at risk. >> reporter: last, graffiti sprayed in yellow paint was found on a rock in a creek bed. it said "i will kill 12 people

on 5/8/14." additional threats have either been painted or markerred on walls in different spots. but most parents believe the threats are not credible. >> the first time i heard about this, i thought it was just like some kid writing stuff, just to scare other people. >> reporter: chase morgan is a fifth grader at john baldwin. he says he felt confident going to school today. >> our police department is very strong. they are very thorough in their investigation. so i believe they will locate whoever is doing this. >> reporter: according to a letter sent out by john baldwin's principal, yesterday afternoon, police caught someone responsible for at least one of the threatening messages. police believe a copycat could be at work here and they are looking for the person who spray painted that first threat. in danville, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a richmond man is in custody after police used social media to track him down in nevada. nicholas wesle was arrested on kidnapping, sexual assault and pornography charges. police say he purr sueded two

runaways from modesto to travel to nevada with him where officers say he raped one of them who was only 14 years old. he was arrested at john asuaga's nugget on tuesday after police used the girl's facebook page to locate her. the search for sierra lamar continues even though she disappeared two years ago. today from 5:00 to 9:00 at a cafe in morgan hill, they are holding a fund-raiser to support the ongoing search efforts. lamar was was last scene on march 15th, 2012 on her way to school. antolin garcia-torres was han burgeed for kidnapping and murdering her. new details into the asiana jet crash last year at sfo. today, the ntsb announced it will meet again on june 24th to wrap up its investigation into the cause of the disaster. ree people died and 180 other passengers were injured in the

crash. federal investigators strongly suspect pilot error caused the boeing 777 to crash into a sea wall while approaching the sfoway. the former san francisco firefighter accused of driving an firefighter truck while drunk pleaded not guilty to felony charges today. sources said his blood alcohol level tested at .13. his attorney called the prosecution's case circumstantial and said he was surprised his client was indicted. >> we fell for the gentleman on the motorcycle. it was a bad accident. but it should not have been indicted, from my view. >> quinn resigned from the fire department after the crash. several supervisors in the department face possible disciplinary action related to this case. oakland police are looking for a suspected carjacker who shot a man before taking his

vehicle. it happened last night in the city's san antonio district. police say the victim was sitting in his vehicle on 23rd avenue when he was approached by a man with a gun. the suspect shot the man, then stole the vehicle. the victim was rushed to the hospital and at last check he was listed in stable condition. summer is still weeks abut the summer like fire conditions are already here for much of california. we've already seen some large wildfires in the south. sal castanedo is live in oakland with the warning from firefighters here in northern california. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon. i want to show you the sign here next to one of the fire stations in oakland. you can clearly see it's already at high. if it seems fire season is early, you would be partially correct. firefighters say in reality fire season from last year has never ended. today, calfire officials along with local fire chiefs joined together to kick off wildfire

awareness week. firefighters say drought conditions have led to a significant increase in wildfires. although most of the big fires have been in southern california, calfire says it has responded to more than 1200 wildfires all over the state compared to about 600 by this time in an average year. >> we're only in may and we're seeing conditions that we would normally see in august, and all of that leads us to -- and led us to prepare much earlier than we normally would, bringing resources on early and moving them around the state. >> governor jerry brown says he's committed to providing firefighters with the budget to add resources and to add more equipment and people to fight wildfires. now, firefighters say 95% of fires are started by people. in addition to preventing fires, firefighters want you to be ready in case you are in the path of a wildfire. >> be aware of the risk. be aware of what you need to do and go do it.

as 40 seconds. there are no immediate reports of damage or injury. u.s. fish and wildlife officials are taking over an investigation into whether endangered birds were killed or hurt by tree trimmers in downtown oakland. animal rights advocates say at least five birds and a colony of herons were knocked to the ground by a contractor hired by the postal service. it happened over the weekend when a contractor trimmed trees near the post office on 13th and alice streets. at least one bird has a broken beak. >> because they nestle the big kol knowly and it's a lookery and they only most once a year. once those babies are gone, that's it. it's really a tragedy. >> the post office wanted the branches of trees trimmed because the nest was making a mess on the mail trucks parked below. president obama now getting ready to leave los angeles and head to the bay area. but along with attending

in a few years, president obama is scheduled to arrive in the bay area. this is video from last night in los angeles where the president attended a star- studded event at usc's foundation. today, president obama is slated to attend a tech round table fund-raiser at the los altos home of the ceo of 23 and me. and then he will head to a fund- raiser at the mountain view headquarters of y commentator. tomorrow he will be at a walmart in mountain view. and he's expected to be met by protesters of the keystone pipeline, similar to lost time he visited san francisco. the pipeline would carry oil from canada to a town in nebraska on the way to the u.s.

gulf coast. last month the obama administration announced the project is being delayed indefinitely because of a legal challenge to the project's route through nebraska. uber drivers parked their cars and hit the streets on foot to demand higher pay. >> what are you talking about? i can't afford that. >> over 40 drivers rallied in san francisco outside uber's mission street headquarters. they are upset over a fee increase imposed by uber last month. the ride-sharing company upped the commission by 15% it now charges a 20% commission on every fare. uber drivers say the increase does not leave them with enough money to compensate them for their time, fuel, fees and tolls. >> i do this full time. $1,000 less as a monthly income. that's a lot of money. as i say, i feel very disrespected. >> uber says its commission was

lowered from 20% to 5% during the slower winter months and the drivers knew it was only a temporary decrease. today is the 20th anniversary of bike to work day and already we've seen dozens of commuters ditch their cars and hit the roads on bikes. alex savidge talked to some commuters about why some say they chose to participate. >> reporter: two-wheeled commuters hit the roads this morning. tens of thousands of people rode into the office as part of bike to work day from the bay area. >> i just made a commitment i was gonna ride my bike to work every day. it's been a couple of years doing this commute. i think it's the most beautiful commute in the world. >> reporter: this was the 20th anniversary of the event put on by the metropolitan transportation commission, the san francisco bicycle coalition and kaiser permanente. the goal is to get as many people as possible pedaling to and from work every day in part by pushing to improve safety for cyclists. >> san francisco is such a

great cycling city. but we can do so much more to make it safe and accessible for cyclists of all ages and ability levels. >> reporter: volunteers set up these energizer stations along popular bike paths around the bay area. there were more than 300 of them. they offered snacks, tuneups on the bikes and words of encouragements. >> good way to start the day. >> reporter: four years ago matted ditched his car for a beautiful ride across the golden gate bridge. although he admits it's hard to get motivated. >> every single morning and we just get up and do it. >> reporter: what do you say to people who are maybe on the fence. >> i say come ride with the big fat guy, i will show you how to ride slow. >> reporter: they say this is a great way to get some exercise during a hectic day and avoid the frustration of rush hour traffic. they are hoping a lot more people make a habit out of hopping on their bikes.

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on the bike to work campaign. a new report says it's working. according to the numbers. 13% of commuters in san francisco either bike or walk to work and in oakland, 6.7% of commuters are biking or walking. and the extra benefit, the two cities had the lowest combined obesity rate in the country. and just go to ktvu.com for more resources about bike to work day. there we have information on popular bike routes and bicycle friendly employers. just look under the web links section. there are complaints over the effectiveness of a new rule in san francisco banning buses from driving into alamo square where tourists have long flocked to see the painted ladies victorian homes. some residents say despite the ban, they still see some tour bus drivers skirting the rule and bringing tourists into the square. last year, city transportation leaders adopted the ban over noise and pollution concerns as well as concerns about safety

for walkers and bicyclists. but many -- while many are upset the ban is not working others say they've seen a reduction of buses in the area. >> i don't feel it's as big of a problem as it was three, four months ago. it doesn't seem nearly as bad. just like small charter buses now. not as many as before. >> police say tour bus drivers who break the rules face a fine of $100. drivers in san francisco who usually take the last exit before the golden gate bridge will have to pay close attention starting this sunday. you can see from this animation drivers traveling northbound on highway 101 will encounter the exit 1,000 feet sooner than they are used to. it's just temporary for about a month as part of the doyle drive retrofit program. if drivers miss the exit, they will be forced to cross the golden gate bridge and then pay the $7 toll to turn around and come back to san francisco.

well, a lot of clouds over the golden gate bridge right now. a lot of clouds over the entire bay area as a weak system moves into northern california. here is our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge. winds not too much of a factor but a solid deck of overcast. even a little bit of activity showing up on live stormtracker2 radar. this is light up towards crescent city reporting some light showers, the most recent image, you can see some activity just offshore. most of this is not reaching the ground but we're forecasting the chance of a few scattered light showers across the bay area as we head into your thursday afternoon. here is a closer inspection of the radar. you can see the overcast towards santa rosa, fairfield, san francisco, and this activity just to the west as you can see offshore. but not much in the way of significant rainfall. in fact, the bulk of the significant rainfall remains up to the north of the bay area. it's not much as well. light showers up towards eureka and cape mendocino for today. temperatures are in the 60s.

today one of the coolest days of the week. san jose, 63 degrees. one of the coolest days of the forecast period. napa, 61. livermore checking in right now at 62 degrees. forecast headlines for today, mostly cloudy skies, a few spotty showers. tomorrow, some clouds and maybe a sprinkle or two to start out your friday morning. but over the weekend, more sunshine and temperatures will be trending up especially for one day coming up. as far as the overall weather pattern, here is the weather system on the satellite perspective offshore. that's a cold front basically weakening over northern california. more clouds, a chance of a few scattered very light showers for today, at least some drizzle into the weekend. high pressure returns. so today one of the coolest days over the next few days. look what happens by sunday, monday, tuesday. warming up and by tuesday, warmest locations could be around 90 degrees well inland. something we'll have to keep an eye on gusty winds developing in the north bay hills and the east bay hills. that could be by snrit -- saturday night and sunday morning. here is the forecast model

products. they will no longer use the all natural on some products. it's part of a settlement augusting kashi of misleading customers on using those labels on products that contain synthetic or artificial agreements. kellogg opens the company and they will pay $5 million as part of the settlement and change the form mew laws or labels -- formulas or labels by year's end. today the nfl draft begins in new york city in less than five hours. the oakland raiders have the fifth pick and seven picks overall. experts say the team's biggest need is a wide receiver. 49ers pick 30th in the first round and have 11 total picks. experts think the 9ers will take a cornerback first. the houston texans have the first pick in the draft. it's being called a hidden epidemic. a disease once thought rare is becoming more and more common here in the bay area. the devastating symptoms that
