local walmart. it is friday, may 9th i'm pam cook. >> good morning i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. pam had sunshine today? >> will indeed. there is a lot of low clouds and fog right now. postally cloudy skies. i know the fog horns were sounding last night. and christie says it's foggy in the interrichmond. we have fog to deal with. there will be a lot of cloud cover here and humid. i almost had to put a quarter in the machine to get that graphic to go. mostly cloudy in the morning. mostly sunny by this afternoon. speaking of san francisco starting off kind of mild. 53. we will go 65 for a high.

african sunshine 50s and 60s coast and bay. here is sal. all right we are looking at commute here that is going to be a little tough in some areas. we will start with 237. it is nice. you may want to take advantage of this commute and get up there before the big crowd is. it looks like northbound 101 as we look at the east bay getting into the east bay, there are no major problems driving there. and 680 to danville also a nice looking drive. as we look at the east shore freeway the traffic here is only 19 minutes. and then at the bay bridge toll

plaza the metering lights have gone on. let's go back to the desk. hello california. i love you back. >> california welcomes back president obama. he is in the bay area to continue his push for solar energy. now this issue has become a major point of his presidency. and today he will visit a south bay walmart. tara moriarty is live at the fairmont hotel where the president is waking up this morning. tara has learned new details about what the president is going to talk about. >> >> reporter: we just spoke to a police officer that said this road needs to be cleared by 9:00. the president will speak shortly before 10:00 at a mountain view walmart. the big announcement he is expected to make today is that solar panels have been

installed at the white house. it comes after a fund raising blitz. the president is making his announcement at walmart because it's one of several companies has agreed to boost its use of solar power. and he will be talking about new executive actions that will slash energy bills. >> in all that we are doing with climate change. we know we have more work to do. >> with little hope of push any major legislation through a divided congress, the president is using his pen and phone strategy leading to several new climate initiatives including regulations for curbing emissions at existing power plants. that is due out in june. it is expected to create major

he says the teacher slapped his son. >> grabbed me by my chin like this and slapped me two times in the face. >> fred burg of patterson elementary has been on leave since april 28th. the boy's father claims the teacher slapped the boy because he put a december city mill sign where it should not have been.

we are following a new development involving chris culliver. brian flores is covering the story for us in the newsroom. >> reporter: culliver a defensive player on the field is now on the legal defense off the field. not only facing those hit and run criminal charges but now more trouble faces the 49ers player and character. a family has filed a civil lawsuit claiming culliver threatened them after he followed them from the crash scene. mark santos says he took photos of the confrontation in san jose. santos says his white mustang sideswiped his family black suv after culliver hit the cyclist. he used his suv to block culliver's car in a dead end street. santos' attorney says they talk about high profile athletes should be in a higher standard. >> i think the nfl needs to

take a hard look at the personalities of their players and the people that are associated with the nfl. you've got professional athletes that think they can get away with anything. and really this lawsuit is about accountability. >> santos tells ktvu news that culliver kept threatening his family. back in 2013 before the 49ers were in the super bowl, culliver made homophobic comments but then soon apologized. he not responded to this current lawsuit. in the newsroom brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. a new accident raising new safety concerns that many call one of san francisco's most dangerous intersections. it happened late yesterday afternoon at sunset boulevard in the sunset district. police say a car hit a 21-year- old woman as she crossed the

street. investigators say the driver told police she didn't see the young woman or flashing yellow lights that are supposed to bring traffic to a stop. >> so how does a driver not see the yellow lights flashing? >> i don't know. if they are looking forward to not paying attention. >> the young woman who was injured is expected to survive. three people have been hit while crossing this intersection this year alone. that is leading to demands for safety improvements. now the city has responded. they plan to put up a stoplight sometime next year. a fugitive firefighterrer could be hiding in the santa cruz mountains. coming up the reason he was fired. >> an important new warning for parents the food that could effect the behavior of your children. >> good morning. right now we are still looking at a commute that is very nice in many areas. friday light. but some areas are getting

time is 6:13. two people hurt near los angeles. a car smashed into a bank. the 69-year-old driver lost control of her car yesterday

afternoon in the parking lot of a u.s. bank branch. the car jumped the curb and then smashed right through a glass wall. both the driver and a bank employee were hurt. police say the driver may have had a medical emergency just before that crash. back here at home the civil trial over access to a beloved beach surround way now. martin's beach is part of a 53- acre piece of land about six miles south of half-moon bay. it was a favorite spot for families and surfers for decades but all of that stopped four years ago when the landowner blocked access to the beach by closing the only road leading to the beach because it was on his private property. there had been a lot of lawsuits after that. surfers argue it was a violation of the california coastal act. the landowner has been ordered to testify next week. >> the spca is caring for more than a dozen pets rescued from a filthy house in monterey

county. 16 dogs including four puppies along with two cats were rescued on monday. police say the house wreaked of feces, urine, clothing, and garbage. the animals were covered in flees and had a variety of health problems. on our website at ktvu.com we posted additional photos of the animals and the adoption information so hopefully they will all get a good home. time is 6:15. you heard trix, skittles, kraft macaroni and cheese. all of those have one thing in common. too much food dye. the dye found in foods kids eat could cause problems like hyper activity and attention

in great condition. armed guards will be on hand because of their rare value. so far not bad. i would say i think we are doing okay. i think we are definitely seeing a little bit of a better commute on this friday. let's take a look at for example some of these -- in fact i'm going to get back to where i need to be now. it's not going. let's just go to the maps. traffic in the south bay is doing pretty well. there are no major problems. i'm not sure why it's not going back to where i want it to go. that is just life sometimes. the traffic is moving along very nicely and there are no major problems as with look at the east bay commute. there we go. the east shore freeway carquinez bridge the mccarthur maze traffic is still at 18 minutes. live drive time traffic -- there is the east shore. traffic is looking good. toll plaza is a 20 minute delay. you have a little bit of this

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time is 6:24. in a few hours the napa mother charged in last year's brutal killing of her three-year-old daughter is said to return to court. she will ask a judge to release her on $1 million bail. prosecutors will be in court to

fight that motion. they are accused of killing three-year-old kailey in their napa apartment and hiding the little girl's body in a freezer. the united states sending help now to nigeria to find more than 300 girls kiddalled by a -- kidnapped by a terrorist growl. the search will be hard because it's believed the kidnappers have broken the girls into small groups. however a few girls did escape the mass kidnappings. cnn obtained vell phone video. the escaped girls say the militants rounded them up and told them nothing is wrong. >> we talked to an immigrant that moved here as a grad

student. she has talked to relatives in nie goo yeah that describe a very nervous atmosphere between the kidnappings and deadly bombings. >> i have four girls. so every day that i go to sleep i wonder how those moms and dads sleep. >> now women's organizations in nigeria have been pushing for government action since the girls were kidnapped. global fund for women have been sending money to the region as part of a relief effort. protest march is scheduled for tomorrow in san francisco. there is another one planned on monday in palo alto. we have all the details for you under hot topics at ktvu.com. >> i got chills looking at that. storming tomorrow you safely lean off the edge of an 1100-foot tall chicago skyscraper. it's called tilt and it's on the 94th floor of the john hancock center. take a look at that.

[ laughter ] we have some clearing taking place. a few breaks in the clouds. last nights light rain and drizzle left behind a lot of low clouds and fog. many reports of fog. now again some areas to the north are starting to clear. mostly sunny by this afternoon. the breeze will pick up there it's still there but it's not that strong. temperatures starting off in the 50s to near 60s. san jose we will go 70 degrees for a high side today. three days in a row they have been 70 degrees. a little bit of rain up in the sierra nevada. there is 49 at the airport. again there is a little bit of a breeze and i expect that when the clouds burn off. i think that is a sign of

things to come here. it's cold and foggy for some i know in daly city we've had reports of that. and also in san francisco many reports of fog. partly sunny. morning clouds, fog and then afternoon sun. temperatures again are really stuck until sunday. and then they will begin to warm up. today 60s and again mostly low 70s. here is sal. born. right now traffic is moving along pretty well in many areas. and slow in others. here's a look at the bay bridge. you can see traffic is backed up for about a 25 minute drive time into san francisco. no major problems on the bridge baa you will be waiting for awhile at the toll plaza. san mateo bridge perhaps you want to use that. that looks pretty good. sometimes later in the morning that gets clogged up. but right thousand we don't have any of that. i all put that on the map. southbound 880 reporting a crash or there was some sort of that is not a crash, but some

sort of a stalled vehicle off to the shoulder. now we heard it's on the shoulder so not a big deal. we look at the san jose area northbound 101 and 280 are still doing very well. drive times 24 still looks good. 880 slowing down from san lorenzo to fremont. now let's go back to the desk. time is 6:33. happening today president obama is here in the bay area. he's talking about renewable energy. he will be going to a store belonging to the biggest retailer in the nation. this morning the president is waking up at the san jose fairmont hotel. tara moriarty is out there as well. she is telling what the president plans to announce. >> reporter: the president plans to announce that solar panels have been imstalled in the white house. last summer crews went in and they were having complications.

and officials won't say exactly how much these panels cost. they only say that the project will pay itself off within the next eight years. the panels were first installed during the jimmy carter administration. president reagan took them down in 1986. oakland based sun jevity is part of business and environmental groups that petition the obama administration to bring solar panel back. >> we have this incredible opportunity to develop a clean energy economy. even as traditional source of energy we've got more than most advance countries. we had this incredible vibrancy that is on display right here in this community. >> now the reveal comes at the end of a fund raising blitz. he is making his announcement at walmart in mountain view. it's one of several companies that has agree to boost its

supports of a fight just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. they found a man dead outside of his home. the victim's name has not been released. investigators have not said how he died but that it was during a fight with another man. police detained the other man involved in that fight. time is 6:36. fugitive firefighter suspected of killing his girlfriend has fecially been relieved of his duties. the cal fire office says fleming has not showed up for work since the killing last week. the official reason he's being let two is for his failure to report to work for five straight days. fleming is still on the run right now accused of killing 26- year-old sarah douglas in a home that the two of them shared in sacramento. investigators say fleming is an avid outdoorsman. he may be hiding in the santa cruz mountains. fremont father is is outraged and plans to protest outside of his son's elementary

school. ktvu alex savidge is live with the punishment and reaction. alex. >> reporter: pam, good morning to you. after a week long suspension, this teacher has been cleared to return to class later today here at patterson elementary school but the boy's father says he will be here as well to protest that decision. he believes what happened here was unacceptable. this third grade student was left in tears after he got a question wrong on a math test. >> he dropped my paper on my desk. grabbed me by my chin and slapped me woman times in the face. >> this all happened monday april 28th last week. there was a report filed. the school district also did its own investigations. those findings haven't been released. nine-year-old julian riviera says he handed in his math test to his teacher fred burg and he was told one question was incorrect. he misplaced a december decimal

point. district administrators still say they feel come tortable with burg returning to the classrooms. >> the nature of the investigation is confidential but there was conformation that an incident did occur. appropriate action was taken. >> reporter: and the district says burg did apologize to his actions. still according to one report julian's family is planning to file a legal claim. and julian's father says his son won't be coming back to class today and he is planning to protest the decision to allow the teacher to return to the school. he plans to be out here as students begin to alive just after 8:00 this morning. we do hope to talk with julian's father later this morning. we'll have more of that on mornings on 2. live in fremont alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news.

just to give you more details. california law does authority allow teachers to -- does not allow teachers to physically discipline students. but some states do. time 16:39. a bill to require kill switches on cell phones in california is on the way to the state assembly. the kill switch would let people remotely lock a smart phone if it's lost or stolen. san francisco senator mark leno changed it to exclude tablets. he also delayed the requirement until july of next year. plans to expand a uc berkeley research lab in the bay area are drawing mixed reviews from people who live near the site. uc berkeley wants to double the size of its field station that sits on 100-acres in richmond. now the school wants to add

another 133-acres to the lawns berkeley lab facility. residents call that a beacon of hope. >> something that our children can you know prepare for right now in school. that they can have the right education and the right tools and jobs to be able to work there one day. >> but there are also some concerns about how the project will benefit the community. people who live in richmond say they would like to make sure local residents get the new jobs that would come with the expansion. a very important new warning about a highly contagious infection. the letter going out today to bay area parents. >> and we're learning new details of a lawsuit against a san francisco 49er. how a man says chris culliver threatened him and his family when they tried to stop the player from leaving a scene of a crash. >> right now we are still looking at a commute that is pretty good but some areas are getting busier.

culliver. he is facing more trouble from a civil lawsuit filed in the south bay. brian flores is in our newsroom with more on pretty scary story a couple is telling. >> reporter: you are exactly right. culliver plays defense on the field but he will have to be on the defense off the field. the fat almost i mark santos claims culliver threatened them. santos says he took photos of the confrontation in san jose back on march 28th. santos says culliver's white mustang sideswiped his family's black suv. he also says he used his suv to block culliver's car in a dead end street. >> he kept telling me to get out of the way. that he has something for us. one of us are going to get hurt if we don't get out of his way.

with the 30th pick in the first round the raiders pick jimmy ward. that surprised a lot of the experts. they considered ward a second round pick. the 49ers have five picks in today's second and third rounds. uc berkeley could host one of the most famous athlete. they will announce what they are calling a major international sporting event at the renovated memorial stadium. there is speculation the event will be a soccer match at the end of july involving the spanish team real madrid. let's check in with tori campbell and find out what is camming up on mornings on 2. >> coming up in minutes left behind while most of the bay

the north. kind of mild. humidity factor is way up there. southwest 20 fairfield gusting to 25. that is a pretty good sign it will be breezy. oakland west at 12. there will be a little bit of a breezy pattern. you can see most of that is flight out of the picture fast. 43 and light rain in tahoe. there goes our system. now this system will deepen. that low has to move in to the north. that will be on saturday. after that sunday high pressure begins to build in and it will really flex its muscles. monday through thursday look warm to hot inland. low clouds, some fog out there as well. that will give way to mostly sunny skies. not much of a jump on saturday. partly sunny after the morning fog. afternoon sun. the humidity is way up there. if you do anything in the morning, you will feel it. temperatures 60s and 70s.
