competitive bicyclists will be racing in the bay area. how organizers taking steps against the heat. and firefighters on high alert, the steps they want home owners to take to protect their homes and we have showed you the spots to cool off there are being shut down because of the drought. they may not be dry for long, the change because of the heat. new information tonight following an unusual discovery at the beach. a boat with no one on it carrying more than a thousand pounds of marijuana. and we are learning that boat is part of a larger trend, drug traffickers going further up the coast of california. ktvu's ann rubin is live with the boat and why there was an suv stuck in the sand nearby. >> reporter: well for, the smugglers this is a botched operation though they didn't have a problem getting to the

beach, they did have a problem carting their lute away. >> reporter: they came to take in the view. when they arrived they couldn't believe their eyes. >> i thought it was funny till i saw the gun. >> reporter: this was the scene, a mexican fishing boat, nearby an suv stuck in the sand. authorities found 42 bails of marijuana, 1200 pounds, that they left behind. >> appears the vehicle was too heavy and couldn't make it out of the sand. >> reporter: authorities say this is consistent with the work of mexican drug cartel. law enforcement has been seeing an increasing number of the boats on the california coast. usually they are in southern california. the success of paroles there pushed the smugglers north. >> since march 2013, there has been eight confirmed landings

from monterey county to san mateo. >> reporter: this was had a large sophisticated fuel tank enabling it to travel further. this was the farthest north they have seen. those who use this beach were surprised they made it this far in the water only to get stuck in the sand. >> i love that stuff. attack caught on surveillance video. this is video we showed you friday. you see a man take her down, grab her purse and she goes after him. she was attacked with a tire iron. she ran after the attacker. the victim spoke with ktvu's ken wayne today. she told ken it changed the way she views her own safety even in a neighborhood she thought she was safe. >> reporter: york street in the mission district is blooming with new life. but this neighborhood was the scene of a shocking attack caught on surveillance video last month. as we showed you friday, a man armed with a tire iron struck her down as she was walking to work. >> i heard a ringing in my ears and felt a blow and i felt someone pulling on my bag. >> reporter: she says doctors told her she lucky she survived. >> 1-1/2 inch gash in my head.

>> reporter: san francisco police did not have an update on the investigation. they are still waiting for somebody to recognize the man in the video and give them a call. in san francisco, ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. the installation of traffic signals is being expedited for safety. a 78-year-old was killed in february there. a 15-year-old boy and a 20-year- old woman have always been injured. the $350,000 installation is being pushed ahead two years. the new installs will be -- signaled will be ready by july. happening now, an effort to educate bikers, walkers and drivers on staying safe. outside at&t park, law enforcement agencies and the bicycle collation are joining

potentially looking for on the sea floor. >> reporter: still the equipment got mixed results last month when a plane sank 16 people into the bay after a collision. >> shallower waters this may not have been as effective or just the fact we need more training to enhance the picture. >> reporter: in the mean time the unit is relying on the rovs. and 2d imaging to help find items like the sail boat on the left. they have a lot of bay to search. they use it to monitor 64 square miles of water. san francisco in comparison is 49 square miles. >> there we go. >> reporter: we were there as they found the boat 38 feet below. >> we will be able to mark where this is so the company will be able to come in and remove the vessel. >> reporter: it is getting used

in daily security patrols to probe the water and along the peers to make sure the coast is safe. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. traffic is moving again on great highway in san francisco. traffic in both directions was stopped after high winds blew 3 feet of sand on to the highway. they spent the day removing it. april and may are windy months and sand a common problem. it runs along ocean beach between lincolnway. a new video claims to show 100 kidnapped girls from nigeria reciting prayers in arabic. this is the first visual evidence of the girls since 300 were kidnapped 4 weeks ago. the leader of the group appears in the video demanding that some of his fighters be freed

students safe. last week the discipline air action of a teacher, today a student. but first though, our chief meteorologist bill martin, temperatures are heating up. it will get close to 100 degrees today. and a lot of folks were running, perfect day to be out there sun bathing but let's talk about how hot it will get this week. >> it is heating up. we noticed it over the weekend. the high pressure filling in, fog away from the coast and the heat advisory is up tuesday and wednesday. heat advisory and around the bay, it will get hot. we could see a couple records. not seeing 105. 104. lots of upper 90s. with the high pressure you get the air compressing. winds and the air gets trapped in the valleys.
