now at noon -- it is heating up around the bay area. we'll tell you just how hot it's gonna get in your neighborhood and where we could see near record temperatures. heat is a major concern for professional cyclists tearing through the south bay right now. we're tracking the amgen tour of california as the bike race moves from one tall bay area peak to another. plus -- a missing 7-year- old girl is now safe with police in oakland as investigators try to piece together the circumstances of her disappearance overnight.

temperatures are soaring today as people around the bay area pull out the shorts and tank tops to feel a little more comfortable in this unusually high weather. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. rosemary has been monitoring the heat and joins us with the current conditions. good afternoon. >> good afternoon, tori. it's going to be a hot one. 4 to 8 degrees warmer at that hour than we were 24 hours ago. giving you a live look at mt. diablo, again, keeping in mind the cyclists heading in that direction for the big amgen tour going on today. it's already 87 in walnut creek. 86 in livermore. 83 in concord. 83 in areas like antioch and in the east bay is where i'm seeing the warmest temperatures. i want to slide over mt. diablo. notice shades of yellow, even green. atop mt. diablo in the upper 60s to mid-70s. not bad at the moment. 81 in la fayette.

mid-80s in orinda. we shift to the peninsula, 86 degrees in belmont. 89 right now in sunnyvale and 88 reported in saratoga. so, again, today notety hotter than what we had -- notably hotter than what we had yesterday. i think we could tack on another 8 to 10 degrees by the end of the day. there is a heat advisory. everywhere most places way from the coastline. stay hydrated, where sun block if you are gonna be outdoors. avoid the outdoors if you can and wear the loose clothing. today won't be the hottest day, the heatup will continue. i will tell you when it will peak and when it will end. more on that coming up. >> we want to know that. thank you. and in the south bay, the world's best cyclistsed riding through the -- cyclists are riding through the bay area today. janine de la vega is live where the cyclists took off 90 minutes ago. it's hot out there. that's gonna affect the riders and race fans as well.

>> reporter: yeah, i'm official little roasting. east of the cyclists to expected to drink double the amount of water than they normally would because it's so hot. i'm holding one of the sports energy drinks that the cyclists are being given to replace all of the sweat that they will lose in their most grueling stage of the tour. 128 sookleists considered the best in the world -- cyclists considered the best in the world were cheered as they headed down white road at 10:45 a.m. to begin their climb into the hills. >> i expect fireworks right from the start of the race. >> reporter: hundreds of fans came to lake cunningham to watching the excitement including this fan from orlando. >> biggest race in the country right now. >> all of the raining they do all year. it's incredible to see them climb so fast compared to us mortal. >> reporter: the stage is considered the most difficult

because of the steep terrain. cyclists will ride 108 miles climbing mount ham illton and the summit of mt. diablo. along the way, they will refuel. a motorcycle will have a medic riding along the course handing out water, snacks and these ice packs. >> on the back of the jersey, feels so good when it's hot. >> reporter: many cyclists have practiced. but the heat may take a toll. >> drink as much as you can. you have to be smart and stay on top of that. if you forget and make a mistake, it can hurt you. >> we had the same issue in palm springs where had hit 114, totally unexpected. you will watch the riders finishing in mt. diablo and falling off their bikes. >> reporter: the festival is being held all day here in the parking lot of raging waters. and admission to the water park is free today. fans can watch who wins the yellow jersey from a big screen here from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. janine de la vega, ktvu channel

2 news. >> all right. thank you, janine. several cooling centers are open around the bay area for residents to find relief from the heat. already there are more than a dozen locations in contra costa county as well as 13 centers in santa clara county. for a list of information about cooling centers and the dangers of excessive heat, go to ktvu.com and look under web links. >> you can get weather information any time with the ktvu weather app. it's available for download to your apple or android device. we have developing news now, a television station near baltimore has been evacuated after a man rammed a vehicle into the station and it's believed that he has barricaded himself inside that building. police reportedly found weapons inside the vehicle and there are concerns the man may be armed. in a tweet, a station employee says the man was heard chanting, i'm god before crashing the vehicle into the building. the station says all employees

evacuated safely and have been accounted for. right now, oakland police are investigating the disappearance of a 7-year-old girl who was found safe this morning. sal castanedo explains how the girl was found and what questions still remain unanswered. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon. the little girl was taken to this police substation in east oakland. she arrived here at about 8:30 in the morning. police say they are still trying to figure out how she went missing in the first place. police say the 7-year-old was found safe at this church. the east oakland faith deliverance center, when she wandered in during a prayer service. belinda said the girl told herl she was lost. that's when she said she took the girl home and had her spend the night. she said it wasn't until she saw her picture on tv that she knew she was missing. >> it's a good feeling. it's a good feeling. detectives were so excited, you know, when we drove up with

her. we were so happy to see her on the news. >> reporter: the fifl was reported missing at about 6:00 p.m. from her home a few blocks away from where she was found. girl's mother was emotional when she said she didn't know how this could happen. >> really deep down inside it hurts to have a child missing after mother's day. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: ford said she had been sick and her daughter, one of six children, was gone when she's woke. police say they are questioning the girl and the mother and will determine if any crime was committed. >> a little tired. you can see he's been through a little bit of an ordeal. there's a lot more work to look into right now. >> reporter: investigators are saying -- they are not in a hurry to send this little girl back to her home. when we pressed them as to why, they wouldn't say. they say this investigation is still going. as far as we know, the little girl is still inside. she will be moved somewhere else. she may not be going home any

time soon. sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. for the second time in a week, the fremont unified school district is having to deal with student disciplinary issues. this time it has to do with accusations of sexual harassment involving 8-year-old class mates. this morning, kimberly wise handed out fliers to parents warning them about a 3rd grade boy who she says groped her daughter twice. she says hirsch elementary's principal only as you spend med the boy for a -- suspended the boy for a day. >> this kind of behavior doesn't deserve punishment. this kind of behavior deserves attention and this little boy needs help. he -- during the duration of him receiving help does not mean putting other children at risk. >> school district officials will only say that a formal complaint has been filed and they are taking the accusations seriously. wise said she's reached out to

the boy's parents but they have refused to respond to her. last week the district dealt with a teacher accused of slapping a boy at another school. police in richmond are searching for hit-and-run driver who injured two people. it happened at 9:00 night on lincoln and 23rd street. witnesses saw a man in a white ford pickup talking on his cell phone before the crash. they say he stapped and got out of -- stop and got out of his truck to survey the damage and then took off. police say the two people in the car were badly damaged. if you have any information, you are asked to call richmond police. san leandro police arrested these two men after they allegedly ripped a gold chain off a man's neck. police say 23-year-old daniel penata and 19-year-old jake escobar of manteca thought the man was a rival gang member. police say the suspects fought with the man on sunday on washington avenue in san leandro. they took his jewelry and ran off when officers arrived. they were caught and booked

into county jail. a few hours ago, governor jerry brown released his revised budget plan and it calls for a record level of spending. the revised budget shows the state has a large teaks revenue sur mrs.-- tax revenue surplus. it reflects $108 billion of spending. that's a billion dollars more than the budget brown proposed in january. he calls it good news for california. the governor's plan goes to the legislature where many have expressed an interest in using much of the surplus for programs, the democrats. the republicans are against that. lawmakers have until june 15th to make changes and return a balanced budget to the governor. in five days san francisco plays host to the oldest foot race. a war hero with highs to the bay area is being celebrated at the white house

infamous zoed young killer -- zodiac killer hits bookstores. it's entitled "the most dangerous animal of all." the co author claims his father was the killer. stewart was adopted and says years of research led him to conclude this now deceased biological father was the zodiac father. critics say the book is filled with sensational claims but very few specifics about the still unsolved serial killings of five people. a white house ceremony just wrapped up to award the nation's highest military honor to a war hero with highs to the bay area. president obama -- ties to the bay area. president obama awarded kyle white the maddal for his efforts in afghanistan. white put himself in the line of fire several times to save one soldier's life and help another wounded soldier. his friend, shawn longein of walnut creek was one of those people killed in the attack.

white says he's been honoring a prom his he made to his friend to look after his family. it's time for the oldest consecutively run foot race in the world. this weekend the city hosts the 103rd beta -- bay to breakers. tara moriarty is live about some changes to the event this year. >> reporter: good afternoon. security obviously is going to be beefed up, up 20%. that's because of what happened during the boston marathon last year. also, there will be no bags, backpacks or containers of any kind allowed unless they are cleared by security and are a certain size requirement and this year, something new, an hour later the race will start, rather than 8:00, 7:00 in the morning, it will be at 8:00. now, we do want to mention that safety will be the big push this year. that's basically what all of the city leaders were talking about. the mayor speaking a few minutes ago on the steps of

city hall as well as san francisco's police chief and fire chief. this year bay to breakers organizers will close part of alamo square and add additional police officers and porta- potties. they want to keep this event clean, alcohol free and family friendly. >> i have seen more than my fair share of the nudity and the drinking and the bad behavior. we want people to have fun. san francisco, we're not like a stickler. we're the place that you come when you want to have a good time. bay to breakers is unique to san francisco. we encourage that. but ultimately, we want people to be safe when they are enjoying an event like this. >> reporter: this is the oldest consecutively run foot race in the world. it starts near the embarcadero. it wraps through the city for about seven and a half miles and then it ends at the great highway where the breakers crash at ocean beach. there promises to be plenty of

colorful characters, world class runners and the party at the polo afterwards. the race starts at 8:00, not 7:00. be prepared for traffic. that means in the morning as well as later on into the afternoon hours when that party goes going. live from san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. authorities in the south bay are warning residents to protect pets after several reports of coyote sightings and even attacks. los gatos police have reports of people seeing coyotes on nicholson and tait in the almond grove district west of downtown. there's two reports of coyotes attacking pets. police say it's best to keep small cats and dogs inside at night and bring pet food ininindoors -- indoors. ktvu has learned of one place where anyone can get recycled water. the dublin san ramon services district in pleasanton started allowing businesses to fill up

tanks of recycled water for $10 a truckload. and during business hours, residents can fill buckets or barrels for free. the water district says it can recycle up to 11 million gallons of waste water a day. the water is not for driferling, but it's triple filtered. so it's safe for irrigation and construction. it's an almost endless supply. as long as people keep flushing their toy let, we'll have a supply. it's a very drought resistant supply. the city plans to send 12 trucks a day during the sulker to irrigate a golf course and city parks. anyone who puses the water will need a fill out a permit form and take a training session to make sure the water is clearly marked "not for consumption." near record heat around the bay area and it will be a stronghold for not only today, maybe tomorrow and into thursday for some. giving you a live look outside

our doors, we addressed the heat advisory. if you are just joining us away from the coast line starting this afternoon and lasting into wednesday evening. in addition to that, a spare- the-air day with some areas becoming a bit unhealthy. those of us that are sensitive to the pollution in the air. for the inner eastern district as well as the santa clara valley along the coastline and inside the bay, we've got some pretty good moderate air quality and to the north bay as well. the warming trend, it started back on sunday. we noticed a bigger warmup on monday. now as we get into today and tomorrow, the biggest heatup is expected with the heat advisory lasting through wednesday night. now, for some of us, we'll start to feel the cooldown on thursday. some of us will have to wait until friday. let's take a look at the afternoon highs for today. 93 in sonoma. low 90s expected in novato. 91 for petaluma. upper 80s for sausalito.

around the bay, temperatures in the upper 80 to near 90. oakland may break a record today at 90 degrees. 88, san leandro. into the inner east bay where we're going to see some of hour -- to see some of the hottest numbers, 94 for pittsburg. 95 for walnut creek. 93 for san jose. 94 morgan hill. low 90s for sara toto ga -- saratoga. 90 in menlo park, redwood city. 93 for palo alto. san francisco checking in at 90 degrees. if we do hit the number, san francisco will break a number. low 80s for pacifica. if you are going to see the giants, it will be warm. 77 at game time at 7:15 and sun setting at about 8:10. the extended forecast here. so today, quite hot. tomorrow even hotter. some of the hottest spots are expected to hit 100 degrees. we'll be tracking that for you. as we get into thursday, the sea breeze returns but along

there's a little less exub rans on -- exu berrance investors have been assess the the sale report. sales grew .1% last month. the dow is up 15. the nasdaq down 11. and the s&p is up a fraction. right now 1897. today the reverend jesse jackson is in silicon valley pushing foremore diversity. he was at e -- for more diversity. he was at ebay today. tomorrow he will be at google. he wants them to encourage more minorities.

earlier this year, he launched the new digital inclusion initiative. mark zuckerberg is facing a breach the contract lawsuit over property he purchased next to his palo alto home. zuckerberg paid more than $43 million in separate deals to buy four lots adjacent to his home. he made the purchases after learning a developer planned to build a large house on one of those properties. the developer alleges he sold his lawsuit to the facebook founder with the promise that zuckerberg would connect him with wealthy clients. but he said zuckerberg never followed through. zuckerberg's attorney is calling the suit meritless. the global financial services firm btig today held its 12th annual commissions for charity today. some bay area sports legends were there to help raise money as celebrity traders. btig's san francisco trading office to help out as guest traders. all of btig's commissions from the trading will go to dozens of children's charities. >> it allows us to help young people in the community and more importantly it allow us to understand these young people behind us right now walking in, we get a chance to make a difference in their lives. >> no word on how much money has been raised today. over the last 11 years, they've donated over $20 million. finally, it looks like something out of a science fiction movie but doctors hope a new bionic arm could help amputees. it was just approved by the fda. it's controlled by signals from the brain and can perform such del little kit tasks such as zipping up a coat and handling an egg without breaking it. it was inspired by the prosthetic arm in "star wars."
