newwith two unique ingredients. to mix in however your heart desires. go on. spoon me. mixim - from the ehrmann family. it's love, your way. let's bring you up to date on the top story we're following right now. police and firefighters in walnut creek say an arsonist may be on the loose in their city. a vegetation fire started last night at a community park. it was the fourth, at least the fourth, suspicious fire in that neighborhood in the past two weeks. >> and another string of suspicious fires, this in novato has investigators really scrambling this morning. just a short time ago we found out the confirmed number of overnight fires has climbed to
8:43 am
ten. ktvu's alex savidge has been on this since 3:30 this morning. you're back now with new information, and you have some new photos, pictures, too? >> reporter: dave, good morning to you. novato police do believe the number of suspicious fires here in this neighborhood will likely continue to climb as we move throughout the morning. already a lieutenant told me a lot of people have been waking up looking around their homes and finding evidence of fires, garbage cans that have been burned and thing like that. this is one location where there was a suspicious fire. this is right near a bike path just off redwood boulevard is where we are this morning. this fire, you can see fairly small. it was knocked down pretty quickly by firefighters. most of the fires were in dry brush like this, including one we want to show you here on a nearby hillside. it charred about a quarter of an acre. these are photos taken by a neighbor that show huge flames burning not far from homes. thankfully that fire was contained before it could do much damage to any of the homes in the area.
8:44 am
that was one of ten fires deliberately set overnight in this neighborhood. this is near 101 and highway 37 with all these fires broke out overnight. most of them were brush fires. one, however, burned a car inside of someone's garage, and in that particular case, a homeowner had to be sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation after he tried to put the fire out himself. this morning we talked with a man who told us his dog alerted him to a brush fire behind his house, and he says with an arsonist possibly on the loose, he's planning to be more aware. >> i'm going to pay a lot more attention when the dog barks, and see if question see any people, you know, what's happening. normally she almost never barks and we're going to -- my wife wants you know, to be on the lookout. i'm surprised. to me that's shocking. >> reporter: and in one case,
8:45 am
police say that a christmas wreath on someone's front door was also intentionally set on fire this morning. it appears that fire went out on its own. those folks did not call the fire department there at that house. in addition to the overnight fires, police also say there were two other suspicious fires in this same area early on thursday morning. now investigators are mapping all of these fires. they're gathering evidence and trying to find witnesses and trying to figure out if the same person is setting all these fires and who that person is. you can see this is another fire that was set just across the street from the fire we just showed you a few moments ago. quite a bit of work for investigators to do. and at the same time, we should point out here, this is not the first time there has been an arsonist, a potential arsonist on the loose here in novato. back in 2012, there were more than 60 suspicious fires set here in this sail neighborhood -- same neighborhood just within the span of a few days. police are looking to see if there are similarities between
8:46 am
these cases. live in novato, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. another $2 million to fix a new problems on the new part of the bay bridge. ktvu's pam cook's in our studio with the concern some engineers have about the safety for the entire span. good morning pam. >> reporter: good morning. we've talked about bad welds, faulty bolts and leaky road decks. the latest problem involves the eastern span's mile long cable. it was discovered during an inspection of the steel rods that anchor the bridge's massive cable system. those rods have apparently shifted more than expected and are now dangerously close to some plates with sharp edges. engineers worry that if those steel rods are jolted in a major earthquake, they could be pushed into those sharp edges. >> the concern is over time we don't want metal on metal friction to happen. if we want to take care of the issue now, in the long run over
8:47 am
time this could potentially be a problem. >> and the other concern as a director with the agency overseeing the bridge project tells the chronicle that this new problem was not on the list as pending maintenance issues, and that it should be. and engineers say this new problem could take months to fix and another 2 million or so dollars. tori and dave. >> all right, pam. thank you. time now 8:47. hey, sal, you had a pretty easy day so far handling our commute right? >> it's easier, anyway. >> okay. easier. >> easier, the worst day of the week was monday when we had just a terrible traffic jam. today is just moderate. let's go out and take a look at what we have with the bridge. you can see traffic looking good on the bridge itself getting into san francisco. there's about a 20 minute drive time across the span which includes some waiting at the bay bridge toll plaza. if you're coming in on 880, people and me this all the time now, which approach is better. 880 today is much better than
8:48 am
580 or 80. if you are driving on 580 in livermore, it's going to be a little slow. your drive time is a little slow as you drive into dublin, but it's not anywhere near what normally is a 21 minute drive time as you drive through grant line road. south bay now very busy on 85, and some drive times here on 24 westbound, pleasant hill road through the tunnel 11 and 880, 238 to thornton 5 15á. now let's go steve. thank you sal. a very happy friday. a mix of high clouds, sun, and also some coastal fog. a westerly breeze. so it's in place, and it is really strong out towards travis. definitely a huge change from yesterday. a lot of these clouds dragging across, more clouds to the north, more sun to the south. we'll just split the difference, partly sunny, partly cloudy. some of that fog will continue to regroup. some temperatures are warming up. we are a good 5, to 10 degrees cooler than this time 24 hours ago, e personally the lows --
