delay if you are at the end of the lane. when you take into account all of the waiting you will do at the toll plaza and then the bridge, the whole thing has become a lot worse. you can go to my facebook or twitter page, let me know what you think is going on. westbound 580 is very slow. in fact, it's not only the bay bridge that's become slow, 580 has become a mess. for no real. we've had a couple of minor things and then 680 is very slow. northbound 87 we had a crash near the almaden expressway. 85 is okay. 280 and 101 are so far just okay. 7:03. back to the desk. thank you, sal. police say a 12-year-old boy was grabbed by the throat during lunchtime at a santa rosa elementary school last week and the alleged attacker is another student's mother. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex

savidge joins us with details on what happened and how the school is responding. >> reporter: later on today, school administrators will sent an e-mail out to students at olivet school letting them know what happened on friday. according to investigators, the mother came on campus during lunchtime and grabbed a 12-year- old boy by the neck and told that boy to stop bullying her daughter, also a student here. a number of students were around. idea min straighters -- administrators called 911. over the weekend, authorities arrested the woman, delia garcia-bratcher. investigators say when she came to the school, she asked her son, who is also a student, to point out the boy bullying her daughter and that led up to the confrontation. school administrators says

there's no excuse for this behavior. i've reached out to the superintendent for a comment about what took place on friday. we'll let you know what we hear back. meanwhile, the woman has been released on bail and she's scheduled to make her first court appearance this week. once school gets started, we'll reach out to parents to see what this think about this alleged incident. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. a convicted sex offender is back in jail accused of sexually assaulting a woman outside a south bay shopping center. 59-year-old michael garcia was arrested saturday after police caught him in the middle of the assault. it happened around 1:00 saturday afternoon near the home depot at the plant shopping center in san jose. police say garcia has been living one block away at a homeless placement facility called home first. people who know him believe he

targeted the victim. the woman reportedly stayed at the shelter one night and checked out the next day. >> the guy said come with me and you can take a shower at my hotel. she's a vulnerable. he drug her in the brushes and drug her in and tried to rape her. a man was stabbed and a woman knocked unconscious during a fight outside of a santa rosa nightclub. police say the victims were leaving the chrome lotus around 1:30 a.m. police say troy michael moore punched a woman in the face. the woman's boyfriend confronted moore and he was stabbed twice. police say his injuries are not life-threatening. police say moore is a known gang member. he's now in jail on $85,000 bail. 7:06. work on b.a.r.t.'s silicon

valley extension enters a new phase. excavation begins to build the b.a.r.t. trencher in hossteter road. traffic will be stopped every two minutes while trucks haul away soil. that will happen between 10:00 and 3:00 p.m. monday through friday. it will continue for the next three weeks. the first extension is due to open in 2017. there is a new report showing the plan to ease the traffic during the bay bridge during the morning commute, it's not really working. brian flores is joining us live now. you are breaking down the report and people are willing to pay the price to get across the bridge in the morning. >> reporter: they are and we can see the evidence of that here this morning as drivers cross the bay bridge toll plaza, paying the $6 as they try to get in the city. but the intent to raise the toll, was to make it to make

less traffic. the numbers released by the metropolitan transportation collision and published in today's chronicle show the number of morning commuters on the bay bridge has grown to $9,000 cars an hour. again, the point of having the pricing was to encourage drivers to go cross the bay bridge either before or of the commute. but the numbers show the opposite. the numbers from the chronicle show $-- show 117,000 cars which is the same number. during the peak morning commute, drivers pay $6 to cross the bridge instead of $4. officials say the possible reason may have something to do with a better economy and people don't have the luxury to wait to get to work. there are drivers who still pull over the side minutes before the 10:00 a.m. deadline, if you will, to avoid paying the toll. chp says if you do that, you

will get ticketed. you can see the increased traffic heading to the toll plaza. but despite the original plan to reduce the cars, officials say the pricing will continue for the foreseeable future. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, brian. thank you. 7:08. the nationwide click it or ticket seat belt campaign starts today. highway patrol officers nationwide will crack down on drivers who don't wear seat belts. now, the campaign continues through june 1st. the main focus on memorial day weekend. the minimum fine for an adult seat belt violation in california is $142. the fine for not properly buckling in a child under the age of 16 can be up to $445. 7:09. levi stadium is inspiring developers who hope to score with the new home of the 49ers in santa clara. according to city estimates about $3 billion worth of office buildings, retail

these are way below last week. we were in the 90s to 100s last week. clouds, showers. mostly cloudy into wednesday. wednesday, most of the action will be in the sierra. we'll be on the dry side. it will be warmer as we go into the weekend. a woman running for office in alameda county is now dropping out of the race after being charged with felony voter fraud. kathleen knox was running for controller. investigators say she lived in san leandro in her filing but they believe she lives in dna ville. she said she's officially -- in danville. she said she's officially and respectfully withdrawing her candidacy. she pleaded not guilty to six felony counts. today is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming june 3rd primary election. you need to reregister to vote if you have moved, changed your name or changed political

parties. the june 3rd primary election will determine the candidates who will appear on the november ballot in state-wide races such as governor and secretary of state as well as u.s. congressional seats and state assembly and senate seats. you will see the name of leland yee on the ballot. he's listed as a candidate for secretary of state. he dropped out of the race in march after being charged in the corruption case. but that was after the deadline so it was too late to remove his name. he remains free on $500,000 bail as his case moves towards trial. 7:21. a new case of the mers virus found here in the u.s. why doctors are really worried about this infection. the king of pop returns to the stage at the billboard music awards. a look at the technology that made this possible. ♪

coast. stillaways to go -- still aways to go. overnight into tuesday looks best. 50s on the temperatures. cooler lows. a lot of cloud cover and cooler afternoon highs. the breeze has picked up for some. could be gusts over about 30 miles an hour, especially higher elevations. the low will drop down and hang out for two days. 30s in the mountains. a lot of rain, mountain snow. upper 60s and low 70s for us. here's sal. today is a really bad day for the bay bridge. you might want to think about using b.a.r.t. because on 80, we have a crash right there at the macarthur maze between the regular lanes and carpool ramp. this was in the lanes. it was in the lanes for ten minutes until they got there and cleared it out. traffic is slow. we've taken an hour from vallejo to get to this point to drive what should take just a little more than 15 minutes.

that's four times the drive time driving this commute. when you get to the bay bridge, there's a big backup. we haven't had any major problems on the bridge. we had a stall. it's been heavy for the last few weeks especially on monday. it's been a terrible commute. other commutes haven't been so great. 580 is a mess from the outer part of livermore all the way out to dublin/pleasanton and 680 is slow south. in the south bay, we're finally getting some slow traffic. this hadn't been too bad. 280 at 17 and 101 in pockets of slow from the capitol expressway up to mountain view. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. a young man is dead after falling from a steep rock in the hills above the uc berkeley campus and it's not the first time something like this has happened. another young man died about a year and a half ago in the exact same spot right there along grizzly peak boulevard. tara moriarty joining us live in berkeley now with the

questions, tara, being raised about this area. >> reporter: yeah, we're here at the lookout. behind me is the trails very popular among people because it boasts some spectacular views. in less than two years, two people have fallen. the body was taken away from the rock area he plummeted from. he parked his car up above the boulder, hiked down to climb it and slipped. sidney overway was hiking when she found him. >> i'm familiar with the rock. i kind of took the trail up past the rock and noticed the body in the bushes and wasn't responses. >> it doesn't look like it's been here for very long. no decomposition. we think it's recent. >> reporter: in november 2012,

24-year-old jonathan yurbena plunged from the same rock and died. he was with friends who told police they had been drinking. this man, in his 20s, they've not revealed his identity. they've ruled out foul play and we hope to get an update from them regarding this case. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a search goes on for a man accused of robbing and shooting two hikers on a northern california hiking trail the it happened friday in tehema county. a 67-year-old man from massachusetts died at the scene. his 76-year-old friend is still in the hospital this morning in stable condition. the detectives want anyone who was on that trail on friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to call the tehama county sheriff's office. a young oakland girl still in critical condition after being hit by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting. police say friday evening a light-colored car was driving

on 66th avenue near flora street when it suddenly stopped. they say two men got out and started to shoot at a 47-year- old man. one of the bullets hit the girl in the neck while she was playing outside. reportedly yesterday was that little girl's 9th birthday. the man being targeted was hit in the leg and the groin, but he's expected to recover. now, despite incidents like this, oakland police say crime is down. shootings have dropped 35% compared to last year. homicides are down 18%, robberies are down 38%. both police and city leaders say the improving economy, more police officers and private security officers around and surveillance systems are all helping. 7:35. well, despite cooler weather, fire danger is still expected to increase this week in in -- in northern california. one of the threats the bay area could face is lightning strikes.

janine de la vega is live in san jose to explain how crews are gearing up for the threat. >> reporter: good morning. several times a year, alum rock park here in san jose closes. you can see the sign up. it says it's closed normally on mondays. but it normally does close for fire danger and firefighters are watching weather conditions and areas like this closely because they are vulnerable. this year's drought has put california at risk for a dangerous fire season. but now this week, will be monitoring for lightning. calfire firefighters are gearing up because they know strikes can be unpredictable. they have the ability to map lightning and see where it's happening. the last attack occurred in 2003 when more than 1,000 strikes hit. >> we typically have a large lightning event every two, three years. it's been a while since we've had one. it looks like we're in the weather pattern.

>> reporter: strike teams from the bay area have returned from helping battle the fires in southern california. that will be helpful because they could be busy with the heat, high winds and possible lightning. fire activities well above normal for this time of year. in the south bay, there were more than a dozen brush fires last week and another one in gilroy that destroyed a home. now, to help, firefighters are asking people to clear debris away from their homes and to make sure to clear the pine needles away from gutters to prevent firefighters from sparking up. reporting live from janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. governor jerry brown says this could be the worst fire season in california history. >> we're in a very serious fire eseason, more seer -- season, more serious than we've seen before. we have to watch and be careful. >> on friday, crews were battling this fire from morgan hill. the governor says the state has 5,000 firefighters and has set

aside $600 million to fight fires. but that might not be enough. the state went to peak staffing in the firsting with of april which is something that doesn't happen until around now, mid- may. dozens of bay area firefighters are back home this morning after helping fight the fires in southern california. many roads there are open again and evacuation 0rdz have been lifted -- orders have been lifted. the san diego area fires have burned an estimated 40 square miles. that's just a little bigger than the size of redwood city. cooler weather and calmer winds helped firefighters get the hupper hand this weekend -- upper hand this weekend. many people allowed to return found their homes reduced to ashes. firefighters say at least 47 homes were destroyed. 39 of them are located in san marcos. authorities are assessing the damage but say losses are estimated at more than $20 million.

some people say some of the things they lost are just impossible to replace. >> my family for four generations, to see all of this burned down is a shock. >> people from communities around san francisco have pitched in help victims of the fires. they've donated clothes, food, money. the cause of the fires under investigation. the photograph of one firefighter taking a break during the fires is getting attention. tim burgen took this selfie, letting his family know he's okay. in the photos you can see him smiling while he and the others took a quick break, a friend posted it on her restaurant's facebook page. >> you see just how exhausted they are, it makes you grateful for all that they do. >> would you believe within a matter of hours, that photo

went viral with thousands of likes. people nationwide also posting their thanks for what he and other firefighters did to help save lives and homes. starting today, muni is testing a new seating configuration on its light rail train cars. on the new train cars, double wide seats are replaced with single seats giving more place for standing passengers. for the next 11 days, the changes will be tested on the n judah line in san francisco. muni says by replacing the 14 double wide seats ten more people can fit on each car. the chainge is expected to help muni's on-time performance. more trains could be reconfigured base 0ed on the feed -- reconfigured based on the feedback. and a mother who grabbed a

infected in saudi arabia and then traveled to the united states. the latest case was reported in illinois and doctors say it was likely spread with just a handshake. >> this third case that was transported, had business transactions with the individual. no unique travel history of their own. and then no travel history since. >> doctors say the person infected had two business meetings in april with another man who had just returned from a business trip to saudi arabia. the centers for disease control says during the meeting, the two men with sitting within six feet of each other talking. the only physical contact they had was a handshake. now, a cdc doctor says the illinois man was never really sick. now the center wants to test anyone he came into contact with because even without symptoms it's possible he could have spread the potentially deadly mers virus. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> wow.

macarthur maze to get on the bridge. give yourself extra time. 580 has been superslow this morning as you drive out of the altamont pass to the dublin interchange. looks like a crash there. 101, 88080, they are -- 880, 80 they are slow. back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. a santa rosa mother is facing charges after allegedly attacking a child at an elementary school. alex savidge is at the school with new reaction from another parent and also the superintendent. this is such a sensitive situation, alex. >> reporter: very delicate situation here and a difficult one for parents and district administrators. as parents begin to arrive, they will be receiving one of these fliers. you can see here in front of olivet elementary charter school, you have district

administrators passing out fliers to parents letting them know what about took place here on campus on friday. according to sheriff's investigators, a mother with two children at the school is accused of assaulting a student, a boy who she believed was bullying her child, her daughter. parents we talked to say that kind of behavior is unacceptable. >> to harm another child is unacceptable. so no. i don't know what she was thinking. i don't know the situation either. i mean this is the first i've heard about it. >> reporter: many parents are just learning about what happened here on friday. sheriff's investigators say this mother in question came onto campus during lunchtime, grabbed a 12-year-old boy by the neck and told the boy to stop bullying her daughter. a number of students witnessed what took place and then school administrators took photos and called 911. over the weekend, deputies arrested the mother identified as delia garcia-bratcher on

suspicion of felony child abuse. investigators say when she came to the school, she asked her son to point out the boy who was bullying her daughter. that's what led to the confrontation. the superintendent said this morning it's a difficult situation for everyone but especially for the boy and girl at the center of this dispute. a school psychologist will be on hand to talk to them. >> it's terrible when this kind of thing happens. we take it very seriously. all of our staff work very hard to keep kids safe every day. incidents like these are very rare. and when they do happen, we respond. >> reporter: the superintendent also said this morning the sheriff's office looked into the bullying claims made by the mother and couldn't verify them. but she also says the school will be doing its own investigation because as she puts it, staff members here take bullying very seriously. the mother accused of attacking a student, one of her child's

classmates has been released on bail. we understand she will appear in court later on this week. we're live in santa rosa, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:05. a convicted sex offender is back in jail accused of sexually assaulting a woman outside of a south bay shopping center. 59-year-old michael garcia was arrested saturday. police say they caught him in the middle of the assault. it happened about 1:00 saturday afternoon near the home depot at the plant shopping center in san jose. police say garcia has been living about a block away at a homeless placement facility called home first. people who know him say they believe they targeted the victim. the woman reportedly stayed at the shelter one night and checked out the next day. >> the guy said here, come with me. you can take a shower at my motel. she's a vulnerable young lady. she went with the gentleman and he grabbed her at the bushes and drug her in and tried raping her. >> police say they received

calls about a woman screaming. when they arrived, they say they caught garcia in the act. he's due to appear in court on wednesday. a man was stabbed and a woman was knocked unconscious at the chrome low tuft around 1:yesterday morning. there was a fight and police say troy michael moore punched the woman in the face. the woman's boyfriend confronted moore and he was stabbed twice. police say his injuries are not life-threatening. his police say moore is a known gang member and is in jail on $85,000 bail. 8:07. today is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming june primary election. you need to reregister to vote if you have moved or changed your name or changed your political parties. the june 3rd primary election will determine the candidates that will appear on the november ballot in statewide

races like governor, secretary of state as well as u.s. congressional seats and state assembly and senate seats. you will see the name of suspended state senator leland yee on the primary election ballot. he's listed as a candidate for secretary of state but he did drop out of the race back in march after he was charged in a federal corruption case. that was after the official filing deadline so it was too late to remove his name from the ballot. yee remains free on $500,000 bail as his political corruption case moves towards a trial. 8:08. the work on b.a.r.t. silicon valley extension is entering a new phase. a mass excavation will begin this morning to build the b.a.r.t. trench north of hotsetter road. traffic on lundy and flickenjer will be stopped every two minutes while trucks haul away

commission show the numbers have grown to 9,000 a hour. the point of having congestioned pricing was to encourage drivers to travel before and after the commute. the numbers printed in the chronicle taken in april and early may show 127,000 cars crossed the bridge. 8500 cars by 6:00 a.m. and got up to 9,000 cars as you would see before the congestioned pricing. during the commute drivers pay $6 to cross the bridge instead of $4. officials say a possible reason may have something to do with the better economy and people don't have the luxury to wait to get to work during these peak commute times. there are a few drivers who pull over to the side. just minutes before the 10:00 a.m. deadline to avoid paying the extra toll. the chp says if you do that,

we're learning new details about the hacking charges filed by the u.s. against five chinese military officials. the u.s. says the hackers targeted six u.s. nuclear power, metal and solar companies including alcoa, westinghouse and u.s. steel. it's the first time isker that the -- first time ever that the u.s. has formally accused another nation of using the internet to hack into the computer and steal trade secrets to get an unfair economic advantage. >> the information stolen in this case is significant and demands an aggressive response. >> federal authorities reportedly traced hackers to a single building in shanghai. investigators say the hacking began in 2006 and continued

drive. we're also looking at the commute on the nimitz freeway, southbound 880. you can see traffic here. there was a crash near union city heading south. the drive time is only 19 minutes from 238 to thornton avenue, not too bad considering what's been going on there. san mateo and dumbarton bridges are also decent alternate routes. 580 is slow and in the south bay, we have slow traffic on 101 and 85. now, let's go back to the desk. >> all right, sal. 8:33. a young man is dead after falling from a very steep rock in the hills above the uc berkeley campus. and it's not the first time something like this has happened. another young man died about a year and a half ago in the exact same spot right along grizzly peak boulevard. ktvu's tara moriarty is out there live with some questions being raised about this particular area. tara? >> reporter: well, we're here off grizzly peak and this is where a lot of hikers come to appreciate the very scenic view from the overlooks here. but for one man, it proved

deadly. yesterday afternoon, authorities took his body in an atv and up a fire road away from the 100-foot rock that he apparently plummeted from. police say he parked on grizzly peak and hiked down the large rock where people sometimes take pictures or paint graffiti. the front the side of the rock is a 100-foot drop. it appears he lost his footing and fell to the bottom. a hiker passing by spotted hill. his identity has not been released. about a year and a half ago, a 24-year-old man fell on the same rock while hiking with friends and family. >> at that point, we had witnesses who saw the person go up to the rock and fall. this time we don't have witnesses. we have to ceet it as -- treat it as a crime scene. >> reporter: they were able to rule out foul play. the edge can be deceptively

steep. police say the rock is dangerous because don't realize how steep it. one wrong move will send them over the edge. we're live in the berkeley hills, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the search continues this morning for a man accused of robbing and shooting two hikers on a northern california hiking trail. it happened friday in tehama county along the iron canyon trail. a 67-year-old massachusetts man died at the scene. his 76-year-old friend is still in the hospital listed in stable condition. detectives want anyone who was on that trail on friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to contact the tehama county sheriff's office. a young oakland girl still in critical condition after being hit by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting. police say friday evening a light colored car was driving on 66th avenue when it suddenly stopped. they say two men got out and began to shoot at a 47-year-old man.

one of the bullets hit the girl in the neck while she was playing outside. reportedly yesterday was the girl's 9th birthday. the man being targeted was hit in the leg and the groin but he's expected to recover. despite incidents like that, oakland police say violent crime actually is down in the city. shootings have dropped 35% compared to last year. homicides down 18%. robberies down 38%. both police and city leaders say the ill proving economy, the fact that there are more police officers and private security officers around and also surveillance systems are all helping. first it was the heat, now firefighters across northern california are on standby for a new threat. janine de la vega is live in san jose with more on what firefighters are preparing for now. goerming, janine -- good morning, janine. >> reporter: we're here near the entrance of alum rock park.

welcome back. a santa rosa mother is facing charges after reportedly grabbing a 12-year-old boy around the throat. ktvu's alex savidge is at the elementary school where the alleged attack took place. you have reaction from both parents and also the school superintendent. ail legs -- alex? >> yes, we do. the superintendent says she takes bullying charges very seriously and will be doing a full investigation into this. parents and school add mip straighters are passing out these fliers as they come -- administrators are passing out these fliers as they come to school letting them know what the incident and also the security procedures that will

be revealed. a mother is accused of coming onto campus without checking into the office first. according to investigators, the woman assaulted a student on campus who she believed was bullying her child and parents are stunned by the accusations. >> i don't understand how you can put your hands on another child. i don't understand that. but i do understand that bullying is not acceptable. >> reporter: sheriff's investigators say the mother came onto campus during lunchtime, grabbed a 12-year- old boy by the neck and told the boy to stop bullbilying her daughter -- bullying her daughter. school administrators called 911. deputies over the weekend arrested the mother, 30-year- old delia garcia-bratcher on suspicion of felony child abuse. investigators say when she came to the school on friday, she first asked her son, also a student, to point out the boy who was bullying her daughter and that in turn led to this confrontation. the superintendent said she didn't have any reports,
