practiced its rescue of stalled ships. david, what did they learn today? >> reporter: this was the first such emergency drill in the country and it used massive equipment to learn new lessons. 1200 feet long and can hold 11,000 cargo containers. a container vessel is too large to pass through the canal. spill. the ship hit a support tower on november 7, 2007. it dumped 53 gallons of fuel into the bay and created millions of dollars in damage and killed many birds and wildlife. he was the pilot that helm at the time of the crash. he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and then served a 10 month prison term. authorities say he was traveling too fast for the fog and was impaired by prescription drugs. at his sentencing he apologized and said there were things he should have done differently. his pilot's license was permanently revoked. our coverage continues on www.ktvu.com. you can find out more about the changes made after the oil spill. just go to web links on our home page. developing news tonight.

troubled san francisco star aldon smith changed his plea from not guilty no contest. it stems from two incidents. it means a judge will decide his punishment. ktvu's robert handa was in court. there could be movement in the case today? >> reporter: that's right. sources told us all day, aldon smith and his attorney were here working out the plea and then he showed up and essentially threw himself on the mercy of the court. >> reporter: 49er linebacker aldon smith was out of site before he walked into the courtroom. taking a seat before a judge. smith is facing three felony weapons charges and three misdemeanor charges related to a dui. he originally pleaded not guilty but today changed to no one contest -- changed to no

[ indiscernible ] >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: as ktvu channel 2 news reported his felony charges related to a party in june 2012 where shots were fired and an investigation turned up an assault weapon, dui charges came after he crashed his truck into a tree and drove up into a home and charged with possession of marijuana. that charge was dropped. the prosecutor said they did not make a plea deal but he decided to take his chances with the judge. >> a bargain charges are dropped, here he changed his plea. >> reporter: he says smith will have to prove to the judge why the felony should be misdemeanors. >> is he changing, the fact he purchased the weapons legally in another state. >> reporter: they are glad

aldon smith is trying to resolve the situation. >> i don't think she frequently making -- he is frequently making bad decisions. >> reporter: he faces four years behind bars. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the 49ers released a statement 20 minutes ago from the general manager, he said we are aware he entered a plea today in a case we have closely monitored. today was a important step in bringing that to a resolution. more details now. aldon smith one of the 49ers best players. he signed a four year, $14 million contract and received a signing bonus of $9 million. that is more than quarterback colin kaepernick is getting. his contract for the same time was just $5 million along with a bonus of 2 million. one of the highest paid players

in the nfl is peyton manning. he has a 5 year contract worth $96 million. he received a signing bonus of $19 million. all of these numbers come from the tracking website sport track. a pedestrian was hurt this afternoon when a hit by a muni rail vehicle in san francisco in the sunset direct after 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. the incident caused traffic and muni delays during the police investigation. the scene is now clear. authorities say the pedestrian was rushed to san francisco general with life threatening injuries. for the second time in two days south bay developers are reporting the accidental death of a construction worker. the incident happened in san jose at sierra road and north capital avenue. police are guarding the area by

don't just want a change of address, they think he should never be freed. >> reporter: the man with the jacket over his head is the pillow case rapist. for decades christopher evans hubbart terrorized women from the bay area tosouthern california put -- to southern california, muffling their screams as he raped them. he raped 38 women but authority the number could top 100. he is the man no one wants for a neighbor. that is why a group of women fron los angeles county drove 7 hours to testify in san jose where a judge is deciding when and how christopher evans hubbart should be reloosed. >> she -- released -- >> he is a repeated rapist, serial rapist. >> reporter: he spent more time in jail and mental hospitals

decision today and didn't indicate when he will. nowell w -- noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. a southern california man who kidnapped his girlfriend's 15-year-old daughter and held her for 10 years is under arrest. 41-year-old e.g. sig booked for -- isidro garcia is booked for raping, kidnapping and false imprisonment. she came forward after getting in touch with her sister on facebook. we learned she tried to escape twice but was beaten. authorities say isidro garcia told her her family would be dedeported if -- deported if she tried to find them. she was struck by a train, investigators say the 18-year- old was crash the tracks with -- was crossing the tracks and didn't hear the train monday night. the memorial tonight will be

memorial day weekend. ktvu's claudine wong reports officers say they need your help and they are telling everyone don't hesitate to call 911 if you see a suspected drunk driver. >> reporter: expect more officers on the road this weekend. to deal with all the extra people, traffic and problems that come with the memorial day holiday. >> employee all available officers to be out on patrol to make sure we can handle any collisions. >> reporter: focused on everything. even with maximum enforcement they need more eyes on the road and they are hoping if drivers see anything they pick up their phones and call 911. 911 dispatchers are prepared for an onslaught of calls. and when someone is driving dangerously the chp says the more calls the better. just a few weeks ago this call
