people in ira vista say memorial day has a new meaning as they remember the people killed during a deadly rampage friday night. >> seven deceased, seven still in the hospital. that connects and transcends for so many people, and i think it's personally affected every single student in a different way. >> after posting a 7 minute youtube video laying out his plan, 22-year-old elliot rodgers stabbed or shot six people to death. police say he later took his own life. it began at his apartment when he stabbed three people, all of whom were from the bay area. he then fired shots from his car killing three people and injuring 13 more. >> you're coming to get your children, and you realize that some people aren't going to have that opportunity, and that's very sad. >> of the people injured, six are still in the hospital in good condition. the others have been released. it is 7:04. we have team coverage this morning of the tragedy in santa barbara. at 7:30 we'll have a live

report from santa barbara. first we go to kristin captain who's working to learn more about the three victims from the bay area. good morning. >> reporter: as we learn more about these victims we learn more about the close ties they have to the bay area. we're in the neighborhood of george chen, one of rodger's roommates and first victims. george chen was a computer science major and former ymca camp counselor. friends describe him to us as quiet and reserved. in a written manifesto he said part of his plan was to kill their roommates in his sleep so they would not interfere with him carrying out the rest of his murder spree. they are still coming to grips with the fact he was antarcticaed by rodger in a -- targeted by rodger. >> we're also learning more about james hong. friends describe the student as one of the smartest people they knew, and they say they also

are coming to grips with the fact he was murdered by his roommate. they say hong had an at best complex relationship with elliot elliot elliot rodgers. elliott once had hong arrested accusing him of stealing a candle. >> elliott had just like a scented candle and james took it for whatever reason and put it in his room. he called the cops on shane and got him arrests and he had to spend like twelve hours in jail. >> we've also learned the identity of the third victim found in that apartment, david wong. we've learned he is from fremont, another bay area young man killed in this spree. one of the first victims of elliot rodgers. it's unclear if he was a roommate or simply visiting at the time of this incident. we will continue to monitor developments on this story, especially how they pertain in the bay area. all of our hearts go out to the families of those victims.

we are live here in san jose. christian captain. and in light of the tragic events, uc santa barbara is declaring tomorrow a day of mourning and reflection. regular classes will not be held, faculty will be available to meet with students as necessary. there will be a memorial service on campus tomorrow and were students are planning to put together a memorial wall. we have more on the deadly rampage including photos of the vigil held for the victims. it's under hot topics on ktvu.com: a chp officers remained in the hospital after suffering serious injuries in a frightening crash on a sonoma county freeway. it happened yesterday morning on highway 101 near santa rosa. investigators say chp officer stephen rutledge broke both legs after a woman behind the wheel of this suv slammed into his patrol car during a traffic stop.

pam cook will tell us how the man who got a ticket turned into a lifesaver. today friends and family will gather to remember a teenager who was killed in a crash near santa rosa earlier this month. ashley carlson was the passenger in a car her friend was driving. she attended rancho catati high school and today would have been her 18th birthday. the memorial service will take place at 6:00. t-shirts and bracelets will be sold and money generated will be given to the carlson family. more than 2500 people are accepted at the san francisco presidio. that's where preparations are underway for ceremonies to remember soldiers sailors, airmen and marines who all made the ultimate sacrifice. tara moriarty says this year's event will mark 50 years since the escalation of the vietnam war. >> we move to the top of the hill here at the presidio national cemetery because the view out here is just outstanding. it's just a gorgeous sunday

morning. veterans are going to be marching here from the main both post at 10:30. you can see the more than 30,000 flags that the boy scouts placed in front of soldier's graves saturday. this year's ceremony is dedicated to vietnam veterans, many who were deployed from the presidio. the event marks 50 years since the escalation of the vietnam war. american involvement in vietnam lasted from 1959 to 75 and the care for wounded soldiers returning from the war the new army medical center was built in 1969. more than 60,000 soldiers were killed in vietnam. 300,000 were injured. in san jose at 11:00 this morning, two military aircraft will fly over oak hill memorial park. the 129th rescue ring will do a flyover. in just one hour volunteers will place flags at the galveston of veterans in valley

memorial park cemetery. that ceremony starts at 9. the event at the presidio starts at 11:00 this morning. mayor ed lee is expected to speak and the cable car will be singing god bless america as well as i left my heart in san francisco. live from the presidio i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. tonight a vigil will be held in lafayette to honor the men and women who lost their lives in the wars in afghanistan and iraq. it will take place at the crosses of lafayette memorial site at 7:00 near the lafayette b.a.r.t. station. it's believed to be the biggest memorial of its kind in the nation for those killed in the two post 9/11 wars. there are currently more than 4,000 white crosses installed on the hill. according to the chronicle, there are talks of a permanent memorial on the site. courts and government offices will be closed today along with banks and post offices. b.a.r.t., muni, golden gate

road. a man hunt is underway for the suspected gunman at a deadly shooting in a jewish museum. is these images show the gunman approaching the building, opening fire and walked away. he escaped on foot. they're hoping the public will help identify him. four people died during the shooting on saturday, and police fear the man will strike again. pope francis visited the western wall in jerusalem. he walked up to the wall, touched it and prayed. as is tradition, the pope left a note inside an envelope in one of the cracks between the stones. his note contains the text of the lord's prayer written in the pope's native spanish. he also visited a holocaust

museum today. he stood in front of the museum's eternal flame and met with holocaust survivors. he has met with both israeli and palestinian leaders, and invited them to a prayer summit at the vatican next month and they did accept. coming up on 7:15. low risk sex offenders could be taken off california's sex offender registry. right now the state requires all sex offenders to register for life. the sex offender management board claims the list has gotten too large and doesn't help differentiate between offenders who pose significant risks and those likely not to reoffend. members suggest only high risk offenders such as kidnappers and sexually violent offenders should be required to register for life. one month after a man was shot and killed outside of a stockton movie theater police have released a photo of the primary suspect. 24-year-old michael moreno is wanted for the shooting of

francisco sanchez on april 25 april 25th outside the downtown sinplex. moreno is associated with known gang members and should be considered armed and dangerous. 7:15. a federal official says it's a very safe assumption american car owners have paid more than they should have for auto parts. a federal investigation into how the auto parts industry sets prices has turned into the government's largest criminal antitrust case yet. so far 27 companies have entered or promised to enter guilty pleas. investigators say parts suppliers work together to set minimum prices keeping them artificially high. officials say japan, australia, and other countries have also cooperating in the investigation, but they add it's really hard to tell how much american consumers have been over charged. caltrans says that big earthquake safety project on southbound 280 in san francisco is right on schedule, and the

welcome back to mornings on 2. marysville police didn't have a problem finding the driver who knocked down a red light camera. they arrested the 19-year-old driver who still had the camera pole in the bed of his truck. he ran into the pole, then drove off. witnesses say he was trying to take the camera out of the truck, but police arrived before he could finish the job. he faces charges of hit and run as well as grand theft. firefighters in arizona say they are making slow progress in controlling a huge wildfire burning near flag staff. crews say the steep terrain makes fighting the fire especially hard. the fire has burned more than 21 square miles and it is only 25% contained after burning for almost a week. crews are optimistic about getting the upper hand and some evacuation orders may be lifted later today. meantime mandatory

evacuations are underway in alaska as a huge wind driven fire burns out of control there. it has been raging for nearly a week in an area south offing anchorage. at last update it was only 20% contained. it was one of the biggest upsets in ultimate fighting championship history, and it involved a fighter who grew up just hours away from the bay area. angels camp native t. j. dillasthaw took on one of the top fighters in the world. he was considered a nine to one underdog. his opponent on a 34 fight winning streak. in the end he beat the odds and came out on top. . >> it's still kind of kicking in. >> he doesn't like to lose at anything. the whole fight he did exactly what he had to do. it was the perfect fight for him. >> dillashaw is part of the team known as alpha male. his next step is a very important one, preparing for

identified. police haven't given out their conditions. detectives this morning are trying to figure out why these victims may have been targeted. the shooting was just before 8:00 last night, and the victims had just left a soul music concert at the concord pavilion. they were driving their white mercedes down ygnacio valley road approaching a red light when a masked gunman pulled along side them and opened fire into the front passenger seat. the shooter then got out of his car and fired several more times into the victims' car before driving off. the woman behind the wheel was hit, so was the man in the passenger seat. police at this point say it's unclear if there was some kind of dispute between the victims and the shooter beforehand, possibly at the concert. i've reached out to walnut creek police this morning for more information on this investigation. we're still waiting to hear back. live this morning in walnut creek, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. thank you. fremont police have detained a person of interest in

connection with a suspicious death of a woman found in her bed. that's all according to the san francisco chronicle. family members called police to the home on royal palm drive after they found the woman's body in a back bedroom yesterday morning. investigators say the 39-year- old woman is married, but that her husband was not at home. police say the family is devastated. >> they've been, you know, obviously grieving as anybody would expect. >> sure. >> but they've been nothing but cooperative with us. >> police say the house is home to a number of extended family members, but that none of them reported hearing or seeing anything out of the ordinary. the coroner has not released the name of the woman and cause of death. it is 7:34. hundreds of people took to the streets at salinas this weekend to protest two deadly police shootings in the past two weeks. >> in jesus name we pray, amen. >> amen! >> sunday's demonstration was peaceful in sharp contrast to a protest that had turned violent last week.

the protest followed the release of a video showing police fatally shooting a man swinging a pair of garden shears shears. the protesters say police did not need to use deadly force against the man seen in the video, 44-year-old carlos meija. >> he deserves justice, respect and dignity. that's the kind of person he was. everybody hears what they say bad about him. >> ten days earlier, salinas police shot and killed another man who they say was threatening shoppers with a knife. police have defended their actions in both cases saying deadly force was necessary to protect both police officers and the public. continuing coverage of the deadly rampage in santa barbara that left seven people, including the suspect dead. reporting paul vercamne, is

there now. >> reporter: tori, not only do they have that manifesto but they also have all these youtube rants and videos, this was a very, very long and premeditated thought out crime by this suspect. >> elliot rodger blamed what he called his twisted world on the cruelness of women, that's according to his chilling youtube video and the 137 page manifesto he sent to his parents, a therapist and others. within that manifesto, roger writes he was frustrated because he was short, upset over his parents' divorce, and because he was not successful with women. police say he killed six people and wounded 13 others before turning the gun on himself. a friend of elliot rodger's family tells cnn rodger's parents went on a desperate search for their son after they received an e-mail with the manifesto. but his plan was already underway. according to police elliot rodgers stabbed to death three

men in his apartment and drove to a sorority house and opened fire. two women died outside there. later police say he killed another man at a deli, then drove his car firing at people indiscriminately. a neighbor says rodger talked about his plan. >> he started saying like i'm going to kill those -- i'm going to kill all them. i'm going to kill them and kill myself. >> investigators believe he had been working on the plan for some time. police were called to his homolyses than a month ago at the -- to his home after the request of a relative. >> he was able to put on a front as it were and convince them and obviously convince a lot of other people that he didn't have problems. >> elliot rodger writes in his manifesto, if police had searched his home they wound found his weapons ending his plan of retribution. >> reporter: and not only were six people killed, there were

also 13 injured including nick pasachute from san ramon. last night one of his good friends said he was doing a lot better. he's the man who was smashed by the car and he hit the windshield. >> that certainly is at least a little bit of bright news from this tragic story. thank you. >> all six victims have been identified. three of them were from here in the bay area. police say james hong, george chen, and david wang were all killed at the apartment where elliot rodger lived. it is not clear if all three were his roommates or if wang was just visiting. both hong and chen were from san jose, wang from fremont. >> he's never going to find his life. no one deserves that, especially not him. >> the other three victims with veronika weiss, katherine cooler and christopher

martinez. weiss and cooper were killed outside a sorority house. as paul mentioned earlier, one of the surviving victims of the rampage this is nick pasichuke. both of his legs were broken when elliott hit him with his car. they told him it would be a while before medical personnel came because they were attending to multiple gunshot victims. he was a sophomore at the university of pacific and visiting his former classmate and water polo teammate tyler martin in santa barbara. our coverage continues online. we have more on the deadly rampage including photofits vigil held for the victims. it's all under hot topics on ktvu.com. 7:39. happening now, volunteers are starting to place flags at the graves of veterans in novato's valley memorial park cemetery where more than 600 veterans are laid to rest. as part of a memorial day event later this morning, the community will remember the men and women who died while

serving in the military with a celebration which will include the placing of wreaths, speakers, musical numbers and the playing of taps. that ceremony starts at 9. this warm holiday weekend is sending a lot of people out on to the water. the contra costa sheriff's department is kicking off its annual water safety campaign. the marine services unit is patrolling the waters near the delta and trying to educate people about rules on the water. >> that's why we want to stop as many people as we can and provide education because in this state, there's no requirement to pass a test before you can operate a boat. >> deputies are checking for life vests, flotation devices and reminding voters that drinking and driving a boat can end with a drunk driving citation. time now is 7:40. san francisco firefighters certainly have been busy this holiday weekend with water rescues. the most recent happened yesterday afternoon when kite surfers had to be rescued at kris psy crissy field. the winds died down and they were stuck in the water.

some made it back to shore by themselves, but others needed help. the fire department quickly responded. they used jet skis to bring them to safety. luckily no one was seriously injured. six kayakers were rescued from marin county yesterday. the boat capsized because of gusty winds and all six people ended up in the water. several agencies helped marin county firefighters with that rescue. the kayakers were treated and released at the scene. two surfers were rescued at san francisco's ocean beach on friday night when the men hit strong currents there. crews were able to bring the two men to safety. the surfers were not seriously hurt. and a group of boaters had to be rescued off the san mateo county coast this weekend after their vessel crashed into a whale. it happened at pebble beach near pescadero point. the five people on board called 9-1-1 to ask for help after they said they hit a while and lost power on the boat. the boat eventually ended up on the rocks. no one was seriously injured.

7:44. in just about 15 minutes, president obama will take part in the traditional memorial day ceremony at arlington national cemetery. this is a live picture of the tomb of the unknowns. that's where the president will lay a wreath. later he'll make remarks honoring service members. more than 400,000 veterans are buried at arlington dating back to the civil war. it's going to be a quick turn around for the president who returned to the white house just about four hours ago after making a surprise visit to afghanistan to meet with u.s. troops. the president talked with the troops about the upcoming withdrawal of most american forces in afghanistan by the end of this year. >> afghans will take full responsibility for their security and our combat mission

will be over. america's war in afghanistan will come to a responsible end [ cheers and applause ] >> the president spent a total of four hours at bagram air base yesterday. country music star brad paisley traveled with the president and performed for the troops. this year's primary for state governor is expected to have the lowest voter turnout ever in california. according to the university of san francisco's center for public service, the majority of people expected to cast a ballot will be older, wealthy, and white. a stark difference from 50 years ago when 63% of california's registered voters went to the polls. people say they don't find this race very exciting. others say they only vote for the president. >> this is just an incredible story as a man pulled over by the chp actually ended up saving the officer from a horrible crash. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what happened on a sonoma county freeway. pam, good morning. >> good morning. what happened on highway 101

near santa rosa, it started with a man who was pulled over by a chp officer far traffic violation. it turned into a dramatic crash scene. >> a few seconds later i hear a big loud crash. i get slammed. >> his car was hit from behind. he was stunned but after checking to make sure his kids were okay in his car, he looked out on to the freeway and saw a mangled chp car and an officer that needed help. >> i saw the police officer stuck in the car on the door. he couldn't get out, so i saw the gas. i saw the gas and i freaked out. i said i need to get him out as fast as i can. >> chp officer steven rutledge broke both legs when his patrol car was hit from behind. he's still in the hospital this morning. the chp says a 22-year-old woman is who slammed into that patrol car without braking. witnesses heard her saying she fell asleep at the wheel. she was driving home from the

graton casino. dozens of arrests so far in a holiday weekend crackdown on drivers under the influence. in san francisco, police stopped more than 300 drivers at a dui check point saturday night. officers made four arrests. they include three suspected drunk drivers and another driver suspected of drug related dui. in santa clara county, 48 people were arrested between midnight friday and midnight saturday. chp officers arrested 147 people throughout the bay area during the same period. in hayward crews are repairing damage after a suspected dui driver in a pickup truck knocked down two utility poles, and ran over a fire hydrant. the crash happened yesterday. police say no one was seriously injured, but the driver faces additional child endangerment charges because a woman and two children were riding in a truck

when it crashed. additionally, while officers were investigating this crash, another car drove up and nearly clipped a police cruiser. that driver was also arrested for driving under the influence. i found that driving down to san jose yesterday, police officers almost every 5 minutes. >> they want to remind people to be safe out there during this memorial day. let's go to sal, keeping an eye on traffic. any major problems out there? >> are you guys stealing my thunder? >> we would never do that sal. >> i would. >> it's good because we have to remind people. we can't say it enough. please be careful. be responsible. chp is doing maximum enforcement this weekend. that means they have more officers on the road throughout the entire weekend. just looking for any sort of violation, speeding, dui, you name it. be safe. this is a look at northbound 10 is in san francisco approaching the 80 split. it does look very nice. so, again, the roads are going to be wide open, ask sometimes it tempts some of us to be a little bit led footed if you know what i mean. slow it down, be careful. you don't want a ticket today.

that would ruin your day. just think about that. this is a look at 580, 880, traffic is moving along very nicely. as you move to the south bay, we don't have a lot going on anywhere. again, take it easy. hey, rosemary. >> hey, yes. >> is it going to be a nice day today. >> it's going to be a beautiful day. how about this beautiful view. i'll step out of the way so we can take a look over the east bay. wow, nice blue sky, air quality good to moderate for today, and the sunshine is throughout from here across the bay along the coast. giving you a look at the transition slowly taking place as we get going on this memorial day. the ridge of high pressure slowly beginning to break down. this is a 12-hour time lapse. if you watch closely, you can almost see the cloud formation as it starts to sink a little bit south. it has to do with this system that is going to be moving south over the course of the next 12 to 24 hours. i think right now it's off the bc coastline. by tomorrow morning we'll notice it's off the washington

coastline. that's going to bring us a cooling trend as we get into the week ahead. i'll get to your numbers in just a moment. i want to go south of the border. we are also tracking hurricane amanda, category 4. the winds have actually died down a little bit. 140 miles per hour, so a strong category 46789 4. yesterday morning the winds are reached 155 miles per hour. 157. we're looking at category 5. it was a tropical storm on saturday, quickly intensified. you can see it south here of baja california. thankfully it's not going to threaten north america or the mainland, but it will fizzle out as it moves a little bit north. right now it's moving west, northwest or north, northwest at about 7 miles per hour. and it is expected to weaken over the next couple of days. here's its path, and notice as we get into the week ahead, it sort of fizzles out right over the pacific. pretty impressive. the first named storm of the eastern pacific hurricane season, and now the strongest hurricane to form in the month of may, at least the strongest

2. time now 7:55. there are reports of three men missing after a large mud slide in western colorado. witnesses say the slide sounded like a freight train. it happened after a day of heavy rain in the area. crews say it is about 4 miles long and 250 feet deep. police say three men who live in the area are missing. they say they never came home after going to look at the slide. roadblocks have now been set up to keep people out of that area. family members of those on board malaysia flight 370 have won an emotional battle. tomorrow the satellite company that communicated with the missing plane during its final hours of flight is expected to release its raw satellite data. family members had been demanding that information for months saying it could provide important new clues into the missing plane mystery. but up until now, the company claimed it did not have the authority to release it. it is 7:56. there is a winning lottery ticket worth $70 million right here in the bay area. the ticket matched all six

numbers in the super lotto plus jackpot saturday night. these are the winning numbers on the screen, 11, 13, 23, 27, 29, and the meganumber 10. the ticket was purchased at the safeway on norega street in san francisco's sunset district. the winner has 180 days to claim the prize. an anonymous person has been hiding money all over san francisco and tweeting clues on where to find it. the person uses the twitter handle hidden cash. people who found the money in the city have been posting pictures of their winning, usually about $100. the person behind the account claims to have made money in real estate and now wants to share the wealth. according to the hidden cash twitter page, money will be hidden around los angeles this upcoming weekend. >> he could leave cash in front of the ktvu steps sometime. >> that'd be nice. won't complain. coming up in our 8:00 hour, the search continues for a masked man wanted for wounding two people in a drive-by

clark. let's get started with weather and traffic. rosemary orozco in for steve this morning. >> we have a fabulous day in store. temperatures will remain above the seasonal average for one final day. 55 degrees right now at half moon bay. most of us in the upper 50s to upper 60s. you go inland, 69 degrees right now in antioch, 65 in concord. low 60s in walnut creek. upper 60s for pittsburgh, 60 degrees san ramon, castro valley at 56. upper 50s orinda as well as outside your door in lafayette. if you're going to see the giants play this afternoon, it's going to be a beautiful day. love taking ferry into at&t park. mostly snide. -- sunny skies. and picking up a little bit for the afternoon. temperatures will be very similar to what we had yesterday. i think we're going to they've off just a -- shave off just a few degrees inside the bay as the onshore breeze begins to strengthen. cooler air will begin to pull into the bay area. as early as tomorrow temperatures falling back to

the seasonal average. enjoy the warmth if you like it. if you don't we have a cooldown coming on tuesday. i will show you that in the extended forecast coming up. good morning. we're doing very well when it comes to the commute. i want to mention that traffic is doing well, and chp is doing extra enforcement this weekend. you can see that the drive time on highway 24 from pleasant hill road to the caldecott tunnel is 8 minutes. average speeds are up there. let's move along and take a look at the westbound bay bridge. you can see it's light, no major problems at all. and it's still about 8 minutes across. if you are driving this morning in oakland, traffic continues to look very good on 80 westbound and down to the macarthur maze. no major problems in concord or walnut creek. now to our continuing coverage of the mass shooting near uc santa barbara. people in isla vista say memorial day has a new meaning as they remember the people killed during the deadly rampage on friday night. >> seven deceased, seven still

in the hospital. that connects and transcends for so many people in isla vista. i think it's personally affected every student in a different way. >> after posting a 7 minute youtube video laying out his plan, 22-year-old elliot rodger stabbed or shot six people to death. police say he later took his own life. had began at his apartment when he stabbed three people all from the bay area. he then fired shots from his car killing three people and injuring 13 more. >> you're coming to get your children, and you realize that some people aren't going to have that opportunity, and that's very sad. >> of the people injured, six are still in the hospital in good condition. the others have been released. >> and we have team coverage of friday night's tragedy. coming up at 8:30 we'll have a live report from santa barbara. first we go to christian captain who is live at the home of one of the victims. >> reporter: obviously this

tragedy touching close to home for just about everybody in the bay area and here in san jose. this is the home of george chen. we just saw family friends arrive earlier. we spoke with them briefly to find out if the family is at all interested in speaking about what their plans are and how they proceed from here. george chen one of the killer's roommates and one of his first victims. he was a computer science major, a former ymca camp counselor. friends have described him as quiet and reserve. elliot rodgers, said the first part of his plan was to kill his roommates so they could not interfere with his carrying out the rest of his murder spree. chen's friends tell us they're coming to grips with the fact he was targeted by rodger in a premeditated murder spree. >> i just can't believe that. of all people. >> reporter: two other victims from the bay area as well, we're learning more about

james, hong another roommate. friends describe him as one of the smartest people they knew. they say they are also still coming to grips with the fact that he was murdered by his roommate. they tell us that james hong had an at best complex relationship with elliot rodger. they say rodger once had him arrested accusing him of stealing a candle. >> james told me elliott had just like a scented candle, and james took it for whatever reason and put it in his room, and elliott called the cops on james and got him arrested and james had to spend like twelve hours in jail. >> a third person found in that apartment was from the bay area as well, david wang from fremont. he is from the bay area. certainly this tragedy touching very close to home. at this point it is unclear if wang was one of the roommates who was living there or if this was simply a case of an incredibly poorly timed visit. we'll continue to monitor the situation here in san jose.

have been her 18th birthday. the memorial service will take place at 6:00 in rohnert park. t-shirts and bracelets in honor of carlson will be sold and money generated will be given to the carlson family. a few hours from now a big memorial day ceremony gets underway at the san francisco national cemetery at the presidio. tara moriarty is there, and you're telling us why this year's event is especially focused on veterans of the vietnam war. >> reporter: that's right. and we have a chance to speak to a vietnam vet not too long ago. you know, really if you have a chance to do that, i would highly recommend it, because there's a lot of pomp and circumstance involved with these type of events. you know, of course there's the choir singing and taps and all of that. really it's the stories of these veterans that will move you. we have a gorgeous day here. it's very sunny. last year it was really foggy. you can see the more than 30,000 flags that the boy scouts placed in front of soldiers' graves on saturday. this year's ceremony is

dedicated as we mentioned to vietnam veterans, many of whom were deployed from the presidio. the event marks 50 years since the escalation of the vietnam war. a bit of history, american involvement in vietnam lasted from 1959 to '75 and to care for wounded soldiers returning from the war, the new letterman army medical center was built in 1969. more than 60,000 soldiers were killed in vietnam, 300,000 were injured. one of them sergeant bill walldrop with the marine corps was hit by shrapnel, stabbed in his side. he remembers vietnam like it was yesterday. >> i feel so bad, i'm sorry. if i had -- i would love to go back there and finish what we started and not stop at some red line that they called the d

of z. >> now in san jose, at 11:00 this morning, two military aircraft will also fly over oak hill memorial park. the 129th rescue wing will do a flayover and then meanwhile the california air national guard unit is stationed at moffett field. right now volunteers are placing flag the at the graves. the ceremony starts in about an hour. the event here at the presidio starts at 11:00 this morning. veterans are actually going to be marching from the main post over to here and everything will get going. mayor ed lee is supposed to be on hand. we're live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. thank you tara. and tonight a vigil will be held in lafayette to honor the men and women who lost their lives during the wars in afghanistan and iraq. it will take place at the crosses of lafayette memorial site at 7:00. it's believed to be the biggest memorial of its kind in the nation for those killed in the two post 9/11 wars. there are currently more than 4,000 crosses installed on the

bay area police are giving

the george mark children's house a big financial boost. it's the first pediatric hospice center in the country. jennifer mccay weber and her family lived there for two months after finding out 11 week old noah had a rare liver disease. they spent some of the most bittersweet moments of their lives there. >> i actually love coming back there. it's home to me. it feels like home. i wish i could come back here to that time. >> noah was expected to survive just a few days the but he lived two more months. the house is supported mostly by private donations. police are helping by running a swat fitness challenge with the entry fees being donated to help other families like the ma cay webers. for more on the george mark children's house and how you can help go to ktvu.com. we've posted the information in

the hot topics section. time is 8:16. oakland police are investigating two deadly shootings in two days. the latest happened after 10:30 last night at 92nd and international. a man and a woman were shot. the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. police say the woman is in stable condition. no word on any arrests so far. a $10,000 reward is now being offered for information about the person who shot and killed a man over the weekend at an apartment in oakland as well. it happened on nicole avenue near fruitvale yesterday morning. police say a group of people had just returned to the apartment after a night out. at one point they started arguing and someone pulled out a gun. the group then took off. anyone with information is told to call oakland police or crime stoppers. marysville police didn't have a problem finding the driver who knocked down a red light camera. they arrested the 19-year-old driver who still had the camera pole in the bed of his truck. police say he ran into the pole, then drove off with the pole poking up and out. witnesses say he was trying to take the pole out of the truck,

but police arrived before he could finish the job. he faces charges of hit and run as well as grand theft. 8:17. caltrans says that big earthquake safety project is right on schedule. the freeway is set to reopen at 5:00 tomorrow morning. the construction work has shut down a 2-mile stretch of southbound 280 between king and caesar chavez streets. the work began thursday night. crews are spending this entire memorial day weekend on this upgrade project to make sure the busy highway would be safe in the event of a major earthquake. a major road construction project in sacramento is about to make another transition. starting tomorrow cal transwill begin work on the westbound side of highway 50 in downtown. crews worked for the last two months on the eastbound side. it caused traffic backups not only for people in sacramento but also for people making the

that is going to bring back the low clouds and fog. as we get through today, we're mostly sunny. i think that sea breeze is going to pick up in the afternoon. if you are thinking about sailing here on your day off, there are advisories for the southern half of the pay as well as the outer waters. here's a stamp of the numbers. we've got 60s in san francisco and right along the coastline on the eastern edge there, we've got a few low 70s. if you're going to see the giants play this afternoon, a peninsula, a mix of 70s and 80s as well as the east bay. getting into the santa clara valley, it's a warm one for you. inland east bay we've got widespread 80s. that shade of red has pushed east just a little bit. i think some of our hottest locations will touch right about 90. take a look at these afternoon highs well above the seasonal average. 88 for napa. 88 in petaluma, 90 in santa rosa, mid-90s yesterday at santa rosa at the airport. 83 san rafael, mid-70s in sausalito. a beautiful day to be by the water. very comfortable around the bay. upper 70s in san leandro, low

let's move to interstate 880 and traffic is moving along nicely in both directions here. your drive time from downtown oakland down is about 5 minutes. b.a.r.t., caltrain and muni are on sunday schedule. if you're going to muni cities check the parking meters. not all the parking meters are free today. better to check and not get a ticket. it's 8:33. let's go back to the desk. thank you. this morning police are searching for a masked man who opened fire on a car that had just left a concert at the concord pavilion. alex savidge has been following this story since 3:00 this morning. right now he's outside john mere hospital in walnut creek where the two shooting victims are being treated. >> reporter: detectives are trying to figure out why this man and woman may have been targeted in the shooting. they were driving their white mercedes down ignacio valley

road approaching a red light at oak grove road when the shooting happened. it's just before 8:00 last night. the two victims had just left a soul music concert that happened at the nearby concord pavilion when a masked gunman pulled up along side them and opened fire into the front passenger seat of the car. the shooter then got out of his car and fired several more times into the victims' car before driving off. the woman behind the wheel was hit by gunfire, so was the man who was sitting in the passenger seat. the two of them have not been identified. police say it's unclear if there was some sort of a dispute or a conflict or an argument between the victims and the shooter beforehand, possibly at the concert, that's one thing that police will certainly be looking into. so far this morning, police have not updated the conditions of the man and woman wounded in this shooting. we're live this morning in walnut creek, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. now to our continuing coverage of that deadly shooting and

stabbing reasonable page near uc -- rampage. elliot rodger killed six people friday night before turning the gun on himself. investigators are now trying to unravel the disturbing 140 page manifesto left behind by rodger. pall burcanon is in santa barbara with more on the investigation that led up to this deadly attack. good morning paul. >> reporter: good morning tori. one of the things at play here, time and time again, roger expressing he has this hatred towards women. also the story now rekindling debate over gun control. no one more upset than a father who lost his son who was simply out friday night going to buy a sandwich. >> need to understand. >> richard wants to make sure his son's death means something. >> they need to know, put faces and names and histories to the people who died to make it real

for them. >> his son chris was one of six people police say were killed by elliot rodger, the 22-year- old went on a shooting rampage near uc santa barbara friday night. according to police rogers first victims three men were in his apartment. then he drove to a sorority house and opened fire outside killing two female students. >> another gunshot wound. >> police say he killed chris martinez at the iv deli. >> we have another gunshot victim. shots fired. >> investigators say the suspect then fired at people randomly from his car. >> i was the only one, and he looked directly at me. he talked to me, and then he just shot at me multiple times, and somehow even though i hadn't even ran yet he didn't hit me. >> police say roger then took his life. inside his car were three handguns. all legally purchased and 400 rounds of ammunition. the sheriff says roger suffered from mental health issues.

rodger posted his bitter feelings in a youtube video and 137 page manifesto. he e-mailed it to his mother, therapist and others outlining what he called the day of retribution for feeling lonely and being rejected by women. richard martinez hopes if nothing else the tragedy brings about change. >> these things are going to continue until somebody does something. so where the hell is the leadership! where the hell is these people we elect to congress that we spend so much money on! >> reporter: and now back here live. rodger was an on and off student, all of his victims attended uc santa barbara. back to you. >> thank you. paul vercamen live for us. three of the victims were from the bay area. james hong and george chen of san jose and david wang of fremont were killed at the apartment where elliot rodger

lived. chen and hong were rodger's roommates. christian captain just talked to a family friend of george chen, what he had to say coming up in 10 minutes. one of the surviving victims of the rampage is from alamo. this is a picture of nick pasichuke in the hospital giving a thumbs up sign. both of his legs were broken when elliot elliott rodgers hit him with his car. when police got there they told him it would be a while before medical personnel came because they were attending to multiple gunshot victims. our coverage continues online. we have more on the deadly rampage including photos of the vigil held for the victims. it's all under hot topics on ktvu.com. happening now, high school students in the air force junior rotc program are placing flags at the graves of veterans at valley memorial park cemetery in novato. these are live pictures coming from there right now. more than 600 veterans are laid

remembering its war heros, the fallen and those still defending the flag in a memorial day tribute at arlington national cemetery. there are many memorial events going on around the bay area. we continue to follow the deadly rampage in santa barbara where six people were stabbed or shot by 22-year-old elliot rodger and 123 others were injured. christian kafton is at one of the homes where he spoke with a family friend. >> reporter: we spoke with that family friend in the last 25 minutes, and george chen of course one of elliot rodger's first victims. that family friend tells us the family is too overcome by grief to speak publicly right now. she tells me that the family is preparing to go to santa barbara a little later on today to collect their son's remains. george chen was a computer science major and former ymca camp counselor. friends described him to us as quiet and reserved and of course he was roommates with elliot rodger, the man behind

those killings. this morning i had a chance to read part of rodger's 140 page manifesto and in it he said that the first part of his murderous plan was to kill his roommates so that they could not interfere with his carrying out the rest of his murder spree. this morning family friends remembered chen as a young man who was dedicated to making the world a better place. >> he's a very good boy. he on both the family and boy, they're involved in the community volunteer and they tried to help people. >> reporter: this morning we're also learning more about james hong, another of elliot rodger's roommates and first victims. they described the ucsb student as one of the smartest people they knew, and they say they are still coming to grips with the fact that he was murdered by his roommates. hong had a complex relationship with elliot rodger. they say rodger once had hong arrested accusing his roommate

of stealing a scented candle. following that incident hong spent 12 hours in jail. we're learning more about that third victim, david wang. we're hearing he's from fremont. at this point it's unclear if he was a roommate or simply visiting at the time of this murderous rampage. we are live in san jose. christian kafton ktvu news channel 2 news. an incredible story as a man pulled over by a chp officer ended up saving that officer from a horrible crash. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what happened on a sonoma county freeway. an amazing story pam. >> reporter: it really is. it happened on highway 101 near santa rosa. it started with a man who was pulled over by a chp officer for a traffic violation. it turned into a dramatic crash scene. >> a few seconds later i hear a big loud crash. i get slammed. >> his car was hit from behind. he was stunned, but after checking to make sure his kids were okay in his car he looked out on to the freeway and saw a

badly mangled chp car and an officer who needed help. >> i saw the police officer stuck in the car, and the door he couldn't get out. so i saw the gas. i saw the gas and i freaked out. i said i need to get him out as fast as i can. >> he did get that officer out, but 38-year-old steven rutledge broke both legs in the crash. it was a 22-year-old woman who slammed into the patrol car without breaking. witnesses heard her say she fell asleep at the wheel. investigators are saying that she was driving home from the grayton resort and casino in rohnert park. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook ktvu news. time now is 8:47. let's go to sal, keeping an eye on traffic. no major problems out there. >> we don't have any major problems. the traffic is doing very nicely right now, and and we expect it to stay that way on this memorial day. i want to remind people that chp is doing extra enforcement.

person of interest in connection with the suspicious death of a woman found in her bed. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. family members called police to the home on royal palm drive after they found the woman's body in a back bedroom yesterday morning. investigators say the 39-year- old woman is married but her husband was not at home. police say the family is devastated. >> they've been, you know, obviously grieving as anybody would expect. >> sure. >> but they've been nothing but cooperative with us. >> police say the house is home to a number of extended family members, but that none of them reported hearing or seeing anything out of the ordinary. the coroner has not released the name of the woman or the cause of death. hundreds of people took to the streets of salinas this weekend to protest two deadly police shootings in the past two weeks. >> in jesus name we pray, amen! >> sunday's demonstration was peaceful in sharp contrast to a protest that turned violent last week. the protests followed the release of this video showing

police fatally shooting a man swinging a pair of garden shears on a is a salinas street corner. the protest says police did not need to use deadly force against 44-year-old carlos meija. >> he deserves justice, respect, ask dignity because that's the kind of person he was. everybody sees, hears what they say bad about him. >> ten days earlier salinas police shot and killed another man who they say was threatening shoppers with a knife. police have defended their actions in both cases saying deadly force was necessary to protect both police officers and the public. it is 8:55. low risk sex offenders could soon be taken off california's sex offender registry. the state requires all offenders to register for life. the list has gotten too large and does not help differentiate between offenders who pose significant risks and those not likely to reoffend.

the suggests only high risk offenders such as kidnappers and sexually violent predators should be required to register for life while others could be removed after ten to twenty years. dozens of arrests so far in a holiday weekend crackdown on drivers under the influence. in san francisco police stopped more than 300 drivers at a dui check point saturday night. officers made four arrests. they include three suspected drunk drivers, and another driver suspected of drug related dui. in santa clara county, the 48 people were arrested between midnight friday and midnight saturday. chp officers arrested 147 people throughout the bay area during that same period. there is a winning lottery ticket worth $70 million here in the bay area. the ticket matched all six numbers in the super lotto plus jackpot saturday night. these are the winning numbers, 11, 13, 23, 27, 29, and the
