went on a shooting rampage near the uc santa barbara campus. i am heather holmes. >> i am frank somerville. continuing coverage of the isla vista massacre. six people were killed before the gunman shot himself. another 13 were wonded. and tonight 5 remain in the hospital. four are in good condition. one is in fair condition. we know that the gunman wrote a manifesto and sent it to his parents and therapists and he left social media posts and videos on youtube outlining his motives, rejection, jealousy and a vow to kill beautiful women. he started by killing his two roommates and another man in his apartment. the three men were all from the bay area. george chen and cheng yuan hong

were from san jose. weihan wang was from fremont. ktvu's ann rubin is in san jose where she learned more about the men killed. >> reporter: high school graduates who appeared to be thriving at uc santa barbara. >> those that knew george chen are filled with anger and grief. she lived next door to the family. >> i am really sorry from the bottom of my heart. i hope somehow this stops. >> violent rampage that took his life. hewas stabbed by his apartment. elliot rodger killed three others and injured 13. >> it needs to start from the home. you know? parents. have to teach the kids the

value of life. other people life. >> reporter: she was a -- he was a 2012 graduate who worked with kids at the ymca. he was devoted to giving back. >> good boy. they involved in the community volunteer. and they try to help people. >> reporter: cheng yuan hong worked with kids, he was studying commuter engineering. friends call him brilliant and gendal. they -- gentle. they wish this could have been prevented. >> no one deserves that. especially not him. >> reporter: a candlelight vigil will be held tonight at uc santa cruz at 8:00 p.m. a thousand people are expected to attend. live in san jose, ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and today we went to fremont

where people were trying to come to grips with another victim, weihan wang. weihan wang went by david graduated back in 2012. he was one of three uc santa barbara students stabbed to death inside elliot rodger's apartment. neighbors say he was an only child and his parents went to santa barbara. >> i saw them leave this morning. they were sad and in mourning. this neighborhood -- our heart goes out to the kid especially. >> the individualself planned thursday in free -- the vigil is planned for thursday in fremont. >> a man is making progress in his recovery. in a hospital bed. police say both of his legs were broken when elliot rodger hit him with his car. his friends say he is trying to focus on recovering.

>> she in -- he is in much better condition than yesterday. yesterday he was overwhelmed with everything. but today he is more lively. holding more conversations with him. that is nice to see. >> he will need physical therapy so we can walk again. he was in isla vista visiting friends and did not attend uc santa barbara. >> elliot rodger sent his manifesto to his mother, father and therapytist before the killings began. elliot rodger parents called police last month and asked officers to check on their son. deputies didn't find anything alarming during the meeting and said they were unaware of his posts on youtube. ktvu's tom vacar continues our live team coverage with a look at the efforts to detect the

threat of potential killers before they strike. >> reporter: schools search for a way to prevent attacks. >> how do you tell who is a real threat and who is acting strange? >> without a clear cut method going forward you end up ovreacting or -- over reacting or under reacting. how do you find a better method that detects emerging aggression. >> reporter: many leak their attentions online. >> creating youtube videos. dozens of cases. >> reporter: how can it be detected. >> great technology is out there. listening platforms that are a souped up version of google

mass shooting and killings. you will find videos and the latest on the investigation. a man is in police custody tonight accused of killing his wife. police released this photo of the suspect. he was arrested last night following a man hunt. family called police to the home yesterday morning after discovering the body of his wife in a bedroom. investigators say evidence suggest that the 39-year-old was strangled to death. and they say he confessed to the crime. he will make his first court appearance tomorrow. happening now, the end of a holiday weekend and that means slow going on bay area roads as folks head home and get ready for work tomorrow. a live picture of interstate 80 in berkeley. it is slow but it is moving. we move to highway 24 in contra costa county. the lanes on the right are

heading west towards lafayette and orinda. the lanes on the left heading towards walnut creek. and now to the south bay. interstate 280/880. things look nice now. memorial day was marked with ceremonies across the bay area and one in san francisco gave special recognition to vets of the vietnam war. [ music ] >> a army band led a march of veterans through the national cemetery. 3500 veterans are buried here. the ceremony focused on the 50 50th 95 of the vietnam war -- 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. >> i was a angry person coming back. i assumed it would be like world war ii. >> when recognition like this is all positive, i think it is

heart warming for me. >> one woman brought flowers and left flowers on random graves. this is one of the largest memorial day events in the nation. it draws 2500 people. memorial day observances brought out hundreds of people. that centered around the flag pole which has a special plaque bearing the names of residents who died in combat. they urged people to remember the sacrifices. this memorial day the nation honors those who gave their lives for their country. sadly for many who survived the loss of their comrades scared them deeply. ktvu's john fowler looks at the

burden for some that the nation says still has not addressed. >> reporter: in san francisco memorial day means trying not to remember. >> a lot of intense things happened. >> reporter: vietnam. >> he was in the bush. >> reporter: or the trauma of comrades dead. >> hear voices. >> reporter: 1-4 are veterans. they served hot dogs and beans. but they know for many here today is no picnic. >> the traumas of modden warfare -- modern warfare you understand people are dealing with that trauma. >> sobering statistics today among post 9/11 veterans. 47% served with someone who was killed in combat.

nation's fallen soldiers today. four hours after returning home from a surprise visit to see the troops in afghanistan. >> present. >> the president placed a wreath at the tomb of the unknown in the arlington national cemetery. it was a solemn ceremony. a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. >> everything that we hold precious in this country was made possible by person whose gave -- americans who gave their all and because of them our nation is stronger, safer and will always remain a shining beacon of freedom. >> he made the visit to afghanistan yesterday. the white house was planning the trip for weeks. this will be the last memorial day weekend with american troopdize ployed to afghanistan. >> -- troops deployed to afghanistan. >> because of the progress they

have made we are in a privitial moment. our troops are coming home. by the ends of the year our war in afghanistan will come to an end. [ cheers and applause ] >> 32,000 troops are still stationed in afghanistan. the president visited wounded soldiers there and he received a briefing from commanders on the ground. 2200 americans have died serving in the war and many are buried at arlington national cemetery. police in walnut creek says it appears a gunman who attacked a couple last night deliberately targeted them. the shooting sent one man to the hospital. investigators say the two just left a performance when a person pulled up and opened fire. the gunman then got out of his car and kept on shooting. >> looks as if they may have

known each other or some connection there. we are not sure right now. doesn't appear like a random act. >> witnesses say the 36-year- old man was badly injured. the 23-year-old driver was his girlfriend and she took him to the hospital. police are looking at traffic cam rues to see if they could give them clues to help them catch the gunman. for the first time tonight we are hearing from the man who launched a social media scavenger hunt. he is behind the twitter account hidden cash and he is leaving money for people to find all over the bay area. ktvu's allie rasmus talked to him about why she doing -- he is doing this. >> came up here. >> reporter: what would compel a 23-year-old man to climb up a bulldozer? the thrill of discovery.
