>> reporter: we're live in san jose, where students and teachers are remembering those victims who were killed in the rampage at uc santa barbara. we'll tell you what's planned today in the south bay. also -- a huge wildfire has forced hund dreads of people out -- hundreds of people out of their homes. the new developments from the fire lines in central california. "mornings on 2" starts now. just like it's -- coming here, it's like just now it's real. >> remembering the young lives cut short in santa barbara as members are planned across the state to honor the six students killed. we're live at leland high school where grief counselors will be on hand where students knew one of the young men killed in the deadly rampage in santa barbara. coming up in two minutes, janine de la vega will tell us

how this school plans to honor the victims. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. steve is vary casing but we have rosemary orozco in for steve. a little chilly. there a chill in the air. we have changes already. 49 in santa rosa. 48 in novato. 52 in napa. get in around the bay, still cool, 55 at oakland. 55 in livermore. 60 in antioch. that's one of the warmer places this morning. the onshore breeze has turned on. it's quite robust through parts of the delta. here's what we're looking at through the afternoon. temperatures will fall by 5, 10 degrees. oakland, 78. today, you will hit 72. concord, 90. you will drop to 81. napa an 8-degree drop as well, going to 81 this afternoon. temperatures fall falling back to the seasonal average. low 60s in pacifica.

mid-60s in san francisco. low to mid-80s for some of our warmest locations. no 90s here. i don't think we have any 90s in the week ahead. i will show you the extended forecast into the weekend -- coming up. good morning, sal. rosemary, good morning. we have drive times that are up. if you are driving from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze, for example, it's almost an hour. not quite. if you can look at the traffic. you can see the traffic is going to be -- graphic. you can see the traffic is going to be busy. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic is backed up for a 30-minute plus delay time as you drive through. i do want to mention the traffic has been a little bit slow on other parts of the bay as well. 680 southbound after we had a crash, the car -- some vehicle actually lost tires. southbound 680 near sunol grade. 580 and 680 very, very slow this morning if you are driving on 680 let's say from partly sunny on to fremont, please

give yourself extra time. there's good news from caltrans on that huge memorial day weekend. highway project affecting traffic in san francisco. southbound 280 reopened five hours ago, three hours ahead of the deadline. tara moriarty is on the road checking out the traffic on the reopened highway. tara? >> reporter: want to go on a little spin, sal? come on with me. i'm about to get on. 280 southbound. i want to give you guys an idea of what it looks like right now. we all know the roadway closed in the southbound direction for the past five days. it closed on thursday. that's because the construction crews needed to do some retrofitting. they had the hinges that hold the freeway together and they need to change them out. they allow the freeway to contract and expand and then they will also help the freeway hold up in the event, you know, of any major earthquake. as you can see right now, it's really not that crowded. i have to say i was out here on

the roadway of 101, i think that was a couple of days ago. that was maybe on the freeway. the traffic was a little bit, you know, crazy on 101 because everybody was taking that roadway instead of 280. i had the chance to take the northbound direction a couple of times, this is a virtual ghost town. but crews, while they had the shutdown happening, were able to paint some of the lines on the freeway. they were able to put up new signage. we're approaching cesar chavez exit actually where they actually had the freeway shut down to. it was supposed to open at 5:00 a.m. but it opened at 2:00. that was the good news. you can see that everything is pretty much smooth sailing here as we cruise to the area. just to let you know, come 4th of july weekend, as well as labor day weekend, they are going to be closing it in the northbound direction in order to do the same sort of type of work. so as you can see here, we're

getting off at the cesar chavez exit. it was a smooth ride. not too much traffic out there. just be prepared, though, to make some different plans come supply as well as labor day. we'll head it back to you. >> all right, tara. thank you. 7:0 a. we're still -- 7:05. we're still following breaking news from san jose. a 15-year-old girl was injured in a drive-by shooting on near interstate 680. it happened about 4:45 this morning. the girl said she went outside because her car alarm was going off. she saw some men then a car came by and started shooting. she was hit with some of the bullet fragments. alex savidge is there now talking to the girl. we have will have an update -- we have an update at 7:30. today has been declared of a mourning by the ucsb college

while the community reels from the death of six students. janine de la vega joins us live from san jose where one of the victims went to high school and has more on how the three local victims will be remembered. >> reporter: students here from leland high school are just starting to arrive. george chen was a former graduate here. he graduated in 2012. this is really hitting hole. the school district has decided to bring in counselors to help students and staff who are grieving. three students who were killed in the massacre near the uc santa barbara campus were from the bay area. the young man responsible for the roommate stabbed his roommate to death, 19-year-old george chen. he was a former camp counselor for the ymca in san jose. chen's parents visited the memorial set up outside the home near ucsb where he was stabbed to death by his roommate. >> we don't want our kids to

get hurt. it shouldn't happen to any family. >> reporter: another victim stashed to death in the same home was -- stashed to death in the same home was james hong. he worked for the rainbow chinese school and was a graduate at lindburg school. the last stabbing victim was 28- year-old david yuan. uc santa cruz students are standing in solidarity with ucsb. they held a vigil last night for the victims. uc santa cruz student emily walden went to junior prom with one of the victims killed, chris martinez. >> coming here, it's like -- it's real. >> reporter: another vigil is planned for thursday night for

lindburg high school graduate david wang. we've reached out to some to see if they would like to say a few words. we're still waiting to hear back. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. ♪ >> statewide, vig yiles are being held. last night students at ucla held candles to remember the six lives lost. a mick shift memorial is set up at westlake high school where one of the victims, veronica weiss was a victim. one of the injured was nick pasichuke. family friend laura yorke said nick and her son played water polo from the fifth grade to high school. pasichuke was in santa barbara visiting a friend when suspected killer, elliot rodger, hit him with his car and broke both of nick's legs.

a structure but due to the dry conditions sand wind, it quickly spread. >> the fire activity or the burning conditions are more conducive or consistent with what you would see in probably july or august. >> an evacuation center has been set up for people forced from their homes. right now, calfire is not sure what sparked the fire. 7:11. eight people in oakland forced out of their homes after an apartment fire broke out. it was reported shortly after 8:00 last night at trask and bem va dear streets -- belvedere streets. no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started. firefighters in san rafael had trouble containing a brush fire near a lome tee po -- home depot store. an italian chief said embers from the dry brush kept jumping the contain -- the containment

look at that. investigators examining this video from chowchilla. a train slamming into a semitruck on highway 99. it happened sunday. the semi got stuck on the train tracks at an intersection known for being a problem spot for big rigs. earlier in the video, you can see the truck driver frantically waving in vein trying to get the vain to stop. no one was hurt in that crash. police in walnut creek still out there searching for the masked gunman who wounded two people in a verifying drive- by shooting. it happened sunday night. a man and a woman were driving home it from a concert at the nearby concord pavilion. police say the masked gunman pulled up alongside their car on ignacio valley road and started shooting.

investigators are going through cell phone records among other things trying to figure out why that gunman targeted those two people. >> it looks as if they may have known each other or -- we're not too sure. >> the man is in critical condition. the woman was treated and released from the hospital. the gunman was driving a light colored car that may have been a honda. happening today -- a mountain view police officer accused of possessing child pornography is scheduled in court. kevin nguyen was arrested earlier this month in a child pornography sweep after sexual images of children were found on his home computer. nguyen is a patrol officer but also served as a sketch artist and was known for his life-like sketches.

he's currently on paid leave. rohnert park police are searching for the snk a stabbing just before 7:00 last night -- for the suspect in a stab. just before 6:00 last night, police were called to hunter and enterprise drive. a person there said he was stabbed. elt heard the attacker run up to him from behind. there was a short struggle. he was stabbed in the back. actor david swimmer from "friends" is being credited to help solve a stabbing. it happened yesterday morning next to his new york city home. police say a male prostitute and his john got into a fight over a stolen computer and one stabbed the other david schwimmer has security cameras on his home. it showed the whole thing. both men are facing charges. hey, sal, can you help our friends in pleasanton. >> trying to.

not that good. we have a couple of earlier accidents to blame. on 680 southbound near the sunol grade. a vehicle lost tires at one point and several other cars were hit by this. 580 is a -- very dependent on 680. so the whole thing is slow as you make the turn. a lot of people make this commute. 508 is slow. 680 is slow heading down and in castro valley, we also have slow traffic. san jose, 101 is backed up beginning near the capitol expressway and it stays slow in sunnyvale. we also have slow traffic on 85 as well. i want to show you the eastshore freeway. 80 westbound from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze is slow. 54-minute drive time. that's what it was on the regular commute day. yesterday didn't count but it counts today. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see traffic backed up for a 35 to 40-minute delay. you can see there's no delay

for the carpoolers. one last thing, that would be a look at the golden gate bridge. not only is this traffic looking good but in marin, we have the routine traffic coming in with no major issues. let's go to rosemary. what a beautiful start over the golden gate bridge. we have low clouds drifting over the bay. you can see along the coast into the east bay, the low clouds, a little bit of patchy fog back with us this morning. ridge of high pressure, that brought us that unseasonally warm weather now being pushed to the east by this system that will continue to drop over the next day or so. this is what is bringing back the onshore breeze, the cooler temperatures as well as the low clouds and the fog. let's go south of the border. we're still tracking hurricane amanda, developed into a tropical storm at the start of the weekend. by sunday, it was a category 4. hurricane amanda, the first named storm of the hurricane season for the eastern pacific for this year also now the strongest hurricane to actually form in the month of may.

it was a very strong category 4, almost made it to a a. it's now weakening. it's not expected to reach the mainland. several hundred miles off cabo san lucas and it will fizzle out over the next few days and will do so right in the pacific. you can see turning into a remnant low by late in the week. let's take a look at some of our temperatures here. low 60s in antioch. relatively mild. we have a lot of 50s out there. over the north bay, temperatures sank in the upper 40s in areas like santa rosa, still trailing behind. novato, napa now in the low 50s. 57 san rafael. we have the onshore breeze. it's quite strong through parts of the delta this morning. cool and breezy to start the day. the afternoon sure looks good. a lot more comfortable for inland cities. low 80s in novato as well as sonoma. 68 for sausalito. we head to the shoreline. upper 70s castro valley. get into areas like livermore as well as brentwood, it's a warm day. we're not dealing with any 90s.

a hotel in brazil set to coast the italian world cup team is getting a red card from health inspectors. inspectors found a number of out of date food products. in total about 110 pounds of food was considered unfit for consumption, including meat, seafood and pasta that already passed its expiration date. the hotel was 15 days to present them with an explanation for the outdated food. they will then decide what action, if any, will be taken. the world cup kicks off on june 12th in rio de janeiro. a new study shows drinking dial out soda can help some people lose weight. people were put on diets and half could keep drinking the

diet soda. the others had to quit. the dieters who continued to drink the diet soda lost an average of four pounds more during the three-month study. those not allowed soda may have had a more difficult time because they had to use more will power to give up soft drinks and watch what they eight. the man who launched that social media treasure hunt, he's now speaking out. he calls himself hidden cash. in an interview with ktvu, he explained why he is leaving clues and cash around san francisco. he says he made his money in san francisco real estate. he wanted to do something fun. he's left $5,000 in envelopes around the city so far. >> it's a tool, use it to enjoy your life and bring happiness to others. >> now, he also told us he plans to leave envelopes with

cash in them in san jose starting tomorrow. he will expand his treasure hunt to los angeles next weekend. eventually, he's hoping to take this idea worldwide. it might not be cash but some people in seattle are finding a surprise of their own. yenny is leaving fliers around seattle with free marijuana attached this tome. the fliers -- them. the woman said she first started to give out free marijuana in new york before moving to washington and now that marijuana is legal in the state, she's not too concerned about getting arrested. >> they probably have worst things toker worry about. i don't think they will -- to worry about. i don't think they will come after the weed fairy. >> she said she leaves the fliers up in the areas where people are 18 and older. she does not want marijuana falling in the wrong hands. the deliveries are expected to continue for a couple of weeks and then the weed fairy is leaving seattle and heading

traffic. steve's off. rosemary is here. i just ducked outside. it's good sleeping weather still this morning. >> oh, yeah. we have the cooler air moving into the bay area. so many of us know that the direction of the wind places a huge part in our weather. that's why we always look to fairfield and the onshore breeze blowing and gusting to 32 miles an hour. there is a cooldown coming your way for the inland areas today. temperatures right now, already a few degrees cooler outside our doors. 56 in fairfield. 56 walnut creek. 55 in oakland. chilly start over parts of the north bay. shades of blue independent kag the north bay locations. 49 santa rosa right now. around the bay, a lot of 50s. an half moon bay with partly cloudy skies reported. 54 degrees. let's squeeze in a few more numbers. 54 in orinda. castro valley, 52 for you. low 50s san ramon and 61 in pittsburg. for the afternoon today, the sea breeze will be blowing along the coast strong.

30-mile-an-hour gusts expected there. but inside the bay even the ininside cities will -- even the inside cities will feel it. 81 for napa. 3 in hayward. 65 in san francisco. 75 in mountain view. i think we'll hold steady for a while. i will show you that in the extended forecast coming up. good morning, sal. rosemary, good morning. we have a lot of slow traffic. i want to show you how bad the traffic is in the livermore valley. this was caused by slow traffic on 680. it's all one big chain reaction. it's taking about an hour and 11 minutes now on westbound 580 from grant line road to the 680 interchange and then after that, you have to drive south and head down from the 680 interchange to fremont. this whole drive is just awful this morning and again that's because of some earlier issues with the traffic there. northbound 101 very slow from before the capitol expressway all the way up to the sunnyvale area. 85 is slow and so is 280.

we don't have any major accidents to report here. on the eastshore freeway, we have slow traffic here coming through. we're almost at an hour to drive from the carquinez brink to the macarthur maze -- bridge to the macarthur maze. that's almost three, four times the normal drive time when there's nothing going on. bay bridge toll plaza is light. did i say it was light? that's a mistake. it's 30 to 40--minute delay. i guess that was wishful thinking. it's not light. definitely not. san francisco, northbound 101, that's moderate approaching the 80 split. back to the desk. >> sal, thank you. 7:33. we're following developing news from san jose, a teenager recovering after being caught in the middle of a drive-by shooting right outside of her house. her injuries described as minor. this happened on lasette and sunset avenue near 680. alex savidge, you are right there. what happened out there? >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. a 15-year-old girl doing okay this morning but pretty shaken

up after being injured in this drive-by shooting. it just happened right outside of her house early this morning. she and her family had nothing to do with what was going on. but bullets were flying outside of the home. one bullet hit the family's car. another one went inside the house. karla rodriquez was wounded by the gunfire. the teenager wasn't actually hit by a bullet. police say she likely was struck by debris, a piece of flying debris. this all happened around 4:45 on the 1900 block of stow street in san jose. rodriquez and her cousin heard their car alarm going off in the driveway. they came out to check on it. that's when they saw a man hiding out in the driveway. moments later a car pulled up and someone inside started firing at this man. >> as i was walking to him, there was an audi that passed by started to shoot.

i didn't know what to do. how to react. i just ran inside the house. it happened so fast. i didn't know what to think. i just didn't think anything at the molt. >> i molt -- at the moment. >> i was in the house and then the bullet went by and passed me on my chest and my arm. >> reporter: and rodriquez was treated by paramedics here at the scene for the injuries to both her wrists and chest and she was allowed to -- she was not taken to the hospital. she's back at home now recovering. the car involved in this drive- by shooting took off. it's unclear if the man who was the intended target here was hit by the gunfire. he was not found by police and the shooters are still out there. san jose police still looking for the people involved in this drive-by shooting that rattled an entire family. left two cousins shaken up. we're live in san jose, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:35. there will be no school today for students at uc santa barbara as they mourn the loss

the ceremony. emily wall done went to her -- walden went to her prom with one of the victims. >> i'm coming here. it's real. >> so many showed up for the vigil, wear were not enough candles to go around. students at uc berkeley are planning a vigil tomorrow night. it will be held at the memorial glade, the big lawn area near the main library on campus. people are being told to bring a candle and lighter. janet napolitano has ordered flags at all universities to be lowered to half staff through sunday, june 1st. a man with ties to the bay area who cofounded rap genius, he's resigned. this comes after he made comments about the santa

barbara gunman's manifesto. this is a photo from his twitter page. the company valley wag reported he used their website which allows people to leave public comments about their news stories. reportedly, he said the manifesto was beautifully written and artful. later on, though, in a statement to valley wag, he said his statements were in horrible taste and that he's sorry that he wrote it. the uc santa barbara has set up a special fund now to honor the students who were killed. the university's chancellor says the money will be used to memorialize the victims contributions to the school's community. we have a lot more information on our channel 2 website, go to ktvu.com, click on the web links. 7:38. one question that seems to be on everyone's mind is could the isla vista ram pain have been prevented -- rm page have been

-- rampage have been prevented. the killer sent out a daily message. one company works for schools. they use computers to monitor for key words, then have people evaluate whether there might be a legitimate threat. >> no single parent or guardian or school or school district for that matter can filter through all of the information that's out there, in an effective manner. >> then it's up to school administrators to have an action plan and try to get help for the troubled student. in the case of the gunman in santa barbara, his family was alerted to the video and tried to intervene but they were too late. some were asking if laura's law could help prevent the tragedy. that's a state law that allows counties to set up programs to order people with severe mental illness. so far, nevada county is the only one to implipment the program. but just last week, san francisco supervisors promised

to put the matter before voters if the board does not approve a program by summer. happening today -- two students hurt in a protest at city college of san francisco plan to take legal action. christien kafton is live and says the list is pretty long. >> reporter: we're waiting for the news conference to start later on behalf of two city college of san francisco students who say they were injured in march. two students were participating in an oncampus protest against school administrators and new fee rules. the protest came to an end where protesters clashed with security and police officers. the two students say they were injured in the confrontation. one student said he suffered a concussion and two broken wrists. the other said he was sprayed at close range then tackled to the ground by officers. both were also arrested.

their attorney plans on filing suit and the san francisco community college district saying the pushing and shoving by officers was unnecessary. she's seeking medical expenses and better training. an attorney also says there will be new video of that clash between officers and students when that news conference gets underway at 10:00 this morning. for now we're live in san francisco. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. teachers in san francisco are planning a second rally demanding pay raises. the rally starts at 4:30 this afternoon at civic center secondary high school with an update on contract negotiations. this is video from the last rally in april. teachers want a 21% pay raise over the next three years. earlier this month, the school district counterproposing an 8% pay hike over three years. teachers claim their median salary is less than $60,000, a lot less than what's needed to buy a home in san francisco.

despite is the statewide drought, some people in california are still getting free access to all of the water they want. according to a review by the associated press, nearly 4,000 companies and farms are allowed to use free water with very little oversight. their special status dates back to agreements made more than a century ago when there was more water to spare. some companies include pg&e and the water departments in los angeles. the 7:42. southbound 280 in san francisco is back in business after a holiday closure. ktvu's tara moriarty just went on a test drive of the highway that reopened earlier this morning. and why facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg is being ordered to

school district and you have more on what students are doing to remember the three local victims. >> reporter: classes just began here. it may be a difficult day for those who knew george chen. he graduated here in 201. he's one of the -- 2012. he's one of the victims being remembered. three students from the bay area were killed by a young man who went on a violent rampage last friday near the uc santa barbara campus. 20-year-old david wang was visiting an apartment near ucsd when he was stabbed to death. james hong lived at the apartment and was also stabbed to date. he was a graduate from lindburg high school in san jose and a former first grade teaching assistant at the rainbow chinese school. the last student stabbed was george chen. he was described as a good person who volunteered and used to be a camp counselor at the ymca in san jose. his parents visited the

and the extended forecast into the weekend coming up. good morning, sal. >> good morning. we're looking at traffic on highway 24, by the way, that has really become very slow. we're gonna show you 24 in a moment here but the eastshore freeway is very slow. let's go to the toll plaza because westbound bay bridge toll plaza has been slow heading out to the toll plaza. now, some of the traffic is slow bad in the east bay that we haven't had the traffic make it out to the toll plaza. i'm not laferning with you -- latch -- i'm laughing with you, not against you. it's been a 35, 40-minute delay. we're seeing some improvement. let's get out to the freeways here on 580 that i'm talking about. 580, 680. some of the 80 freeways. 680. all over the freeway we are seeing a lot of slow traffic. it's not just one freeway, not

just one problem. multiple communities are just so. some of these commutes are very slow as you drive on 580, for example. this is highway 24. look at it. it's 37 minutes, that tripled or quadrupled your drive time. people are very slow. i'm looking at the list to see if there is an accident. i'm not finding it. we'll get to the bottom of it for you. 8:33. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. still follow be developing news from san jose, that's where a teenager is recovering after being caught in the middle of a drive-by shooting right outside of her house. her injuries are described as minor. it happened on lasette and sunset. alex savidge is there now. what happened out there? >> reporter: well, dave, it was a drive-by shooting right outside of this home early this morning. thankfully, this 15-year-old girl she was not seriously hurt. she was not hit by a bullet.

she was, in fact, struck by flying debris that was part of this drive-by shooting. she was not seriously hurt. but she was pretty shake be up -- shaken up. >> i was in the house. the bullet passed me on my chest and arm. >> reporter: carla rodriquez has minor wounds. she showed us the injuries. she was treated by paramedics here at the scene. she didn't have to go to the hospital. the shooting happened just about 4:45 this morning on the 1900 block of stow street in san jose. rodriquez and her cousin herd their car alarm going off in the driveway. they came outside to check on it. that's when they saw a man they didn't know hiding out in their driveway. moments later, a car pulled up and someone inside started firing at the man toward the house. the two cousins raced inside for cover and feel lucky to

getting hurt. it shouldn't happen to any family. >> george chen was one of three bay area residents stabbed to death when elliot rodger went on a rampage. james hong, david wang and chen were all found dead in the apartment chen shared with rodger not too far from campus. grief counselors will be at leland high school today where chen attended high school. universities all over the country and here in the bay area are mourning in solidarity with uc santa barbara. last night, students at uc santa cruz held a vickil to honor -- vigil to honor the victims. more than a hundred students attended the ceremony. many did not have a connection to the victims but some did like emily walden. she went to her junior prom with doctors martinez, who was shot and killed by the gunman. >> just like it's -- coming

march. now, the two students were participating in an on-campus demonstration. protesters clashed with campus security and san francisco police officers. the two students say they were injured in that confrontation. one student said he suffered a concussion and two broken wrists. the other was sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray at close range and then tackled by officers. both. those students were arrested. their children plans to filed suit against the city and county and the san francisco community college district saying the pushing and shoving by the officers was unnecessary. she says that she is seeking medical expenses and better training for the officers involved. that attorney says there will be new video released a little bit later on this morning of that clash. again that news conference set to get underway here on the college campus at 10:00 this morning. standing by we're live in san francisco, christien kafton,

a stretch of 280 in san francisco is back in business this morning after a long holiday weekend closure. it reopened at 2:00 a.m., three hours ahead of schedule. ktvu's tara moriarty has been doing some test drives live on the air. you drove extremely well. we're glad to see that, tara. pretty smoothly. >> reporter: yeah, it's hard to multitask, i will tell you that. you can see the southbound lanes are moving nicely. it's the northbound lanes that are backed up at the moment. this was not the case on -- over the past five days, i would say on the left-hand side of your screen there. this is what you are looking at 280 southbound. that was desolate if you got a chance to drive by the northbound lanes at all. now, the southbound lanes had been shut down last thursday from the king street onramp to the pennsylvania offramp at cesar chavez and they were slated to open at 5:00 a.m. but they opened at 2:00 a.m. crews were doing work on the bridge. >> it's been a very, very tough -- it's been a very challenging project. they had to bring in crews from other projects just to make sure that we made the deadline.

breaking news out of oakland where police are investigating a threat against kaiser hospital. a specific and credible criminal threat was made against the hospital. our crews have seep an increased police presence at their broadway facility. the contra costa times says advisories were sent to patients and employees to show up later in the day. and we've seen multiple reports on social media of people
