campbell. a security threat had police on alert and two kaiser buildings in oakland shut down until minutes ago. tara moriarty is live from the kaiser offices on macarthur and broadway where she's just received word from an employee inside. tara? >> reporter: that's right. the offices are open. we've seen people go in and out of them. we talked to a kaiser employee who told us that somebody robbed one of the pharmacies and phoned in a physical threat to the hospital. some workers like doctors and pharmacists were being allowed to leave earlier. others were not. >> i will give you my card around the money and -- >> we cannot. you can come back after 12:00. okay? >> i can't. >> hey, hey, hey, hey! ma'am! >> we're closed until noon. >> she didn't tell me to go anywhere. she didn't even suggest walnut creek. she didn't suggest anything. she just told me to go away.

>> reporter: patients were getting turned away early this morning. the threat, credible enough that police beefed up presence here. the closure affected offices, clinics, laboratories and pharmacies. one patient said she was angry because she didn't receive any e-mail or phone call about the situation and was turned away from her physical therapy appointment. >> i guess i have to wait two hours. >> what do you think? >> it's frustrating because i need clearance for work. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: now, officials with kaiser put out a theme in saying contrary to previous media report, the potential illegal activity is not a bomb threat. the buildings have been closed for safety and to allow opd to investigate the investigation. the two offices, the two buildings on broadway. they had a pharmacy open for folks. as we mentioned, minutes ago, six minutes before we went on the air, the all clear was

given and signs were removed. people are being allowed to continue to work and patients are being hey loued to get to their -- allowed to get to their appointments. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a day of mourning has been declared at the uc santa barbara campus. six students were killed and another man a dozen injured when another area student went on a rampage. some of the victims were from the bay area. janine de la vega is live where it's the first day of school since this attack. >> reporter: well, it's especially difficult for the students and staff at lindburg high school who knew james hong well, especially those in the drama class. he graduated here in 2012. he's being remembered as a shy and kind young man with a big smile. >> he never deviated, that seat or that seat. >> reporter: it's painful for laurel cohen to think about one of her students who took her

drama classes at the high school. she remembers james hong as as tall, thin, taker who at first -- teenager who at first didn't say much. >> he was painfully shy, sweet as sugar. typically drama students are extroverts but he was opposite. i think that's why he came to us was because he wanted to get over his shyness. >> reporter: she watched hong blo some as he worked -- blossom as he worked behind scenes. grief counselors were on campus. he was stabbed to death friday during a violent rampage. his roommate, 19-year-old george then was also from san jose. counselors are at leland high school where he graduated in 201. chen is remembered as a kind person who enjoyed volunteering. >> very difficult news. as a district, we want to express our condole senses to george's family and the victim's family. >> reporter: in fremont, 20- year-old david wong is being

at half staff until june 1st last night. senator richard bloomenthal from connecticut said congress should have taken action after the sandy hook massacre. >> that day in april last year, when we had 55 votes but failed to reach the 60 needed to pass a comprehensive measure was in fact a day of shame and disgrace in the united states congress. >> he says he's determined to get measures passed that include mental health. police say elliot rodger passed a background check to buy a gun. that's despite a history of mental illness. a san jose teenager is recovering from the physical and emotional trauma she suffered this morning as she was the innocent bystander of a drive-by shooting. >> i was in the house. it a passed me in -- it passed

me in my chest and arm. >> reporter: she has minor wounds but 15-year-old carl law rodriquez is grateful -- karla rodriquez is grateful she was not seriously hurt. she was caught in the middle of a drive by that left her family with a flat tire and frayed nerves. it turns out rodriquez wasn't hit by a bullet. she was injured by flying debris. the gunfire was at around 4:45 on stow street in san jose. rodriquez and her cousin woke up to their car alarm going off. they went outside and saw a strange man hiding out in their driveway. moments later, they saw a car drive up and someone inside started firing toward the house. >> i didn't even know what to do, how to react. i just ran inside the house and -- it just happened so fast. >> definitely grateful. the cops telling us we were so lucky we didn't get shot. >> reporter: san jose police are searching for whoever opened fire on this street, a

frightening way for these cousins to wake up. they say the next time their car alarm sounds, they are calling police and they won't be going outside to investigate. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. clair prosecutors will try to convince a judge today sa there's enough evidence to try a man in a 25-year-old murder case. they have to show probable cause that zimmer killed his wife. prosecutors say he planned the death of kathy zimmer for financial reasons. her body was found wrapped inside a quilt in her car at san jose international. his lawyer said there's no evidence showing he was the killer. now, a portion of 280 is open in san francisco after a weekend shutdown. caltrans closed the southbound lanes of 280 from 9:00 a.m. on thursday. crews reopened the lanes three hours ahead of schedule at 2:00 p.m. they were working on bridge

that's what john perez faced when he became speaker of the california assembly. so he partnered with governor brown to pass three balanced budgets, on time. for the first time in thirty years. today, the deficits are gone and we've invested an additional 2 billion dollars in education. now john perez is running for controller, to keep fighting for balanced budgets. democrat john perez for controller. two students injured in a protest two months ago at city college of san francisco are taking legal action against the school and the city. christien kafton has more. >> reporter: this notice of claim filed just today follows incidents that unfoldled here in front of conlon hall in march. two students were paging part

in what they call -- taking part in what they call a peaceful march. they say the protest turned violent and they are blaming the police. >> what are you doing? what are you doing? >> reporter: in march, dozens of students conducted a loud protest outside and inside san francisco's conlon hall, angry at tuition policies. two protesters say campus security and san francisco police went too far in trying to control the crowd. one of them seen in this video says he was thrown to the ground by officers and arrested. >> my wrists were broken and i received a concussion. i was then hauled up two flights of stairs and held bleeding without my eyeglasses on the hallway of the second floor. >> he was arrested inside the building by overly aggressive police officers. >> want to seep our elected board of trustees back in power. i would like to see police

officers -- >> i was tackled to the ground, choked, scratched and pepper sprayed. i was put in a holding cell deprived of food and medical attention. >> reporter: both students were joined by their attorney today, to announce they were filing a claim. >> it's not like the students are anxious to sue the college or the city. but both they sustained someprity serious injuries that are completely unnecessary and serious violations of their constitutional rights. >> reporter: now, we have reached out to san francisco's city attorney's office and the community college, neither had a response to the allegations saying they had not received the notice of claim. san francisco and the school district have 45 days to respond. a lawsuit will likely follow by december. we're live in san francisco,

christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. teachers in san francisco are planning another rally today to demand ray paz a -- pay raises. this is video from the last rally in april. teachers want a 21% pay raise over the next three years. the school district proposed 8% over three years earlier this month. teachers say their salary is less than 60,000 a year. a lot less than what's needed to buy a home in san francisco. now at noon, impressive young people from the bay area are in washington today for the fourth annual white house science fair. sal castanedo joins us live from the newsroom to tell us that president obama used the occasion to make make a big announcement about education. sal castanedo has more. >> reporter: students chosen for the most innovative protects get to show off their stuff. four of those winners are from the bay area.

one of them developed a solar powered walking cane. kevin and sal of oakland developed solar powered batteries to charge a scooter. and marina haynes of santa cruz developed a concussion cushion for football helmets. the president said he's committed to giving more money to try to find the best and brighters teachers in the field. >> i'm anounsing a $-- announcing a 345 million grant for competition -- $35 million grant for competition. >> reporter: private companies including california-based esry announced it will be let every student from k through 12 use the powerful scientific software program for free. a donation worth more than a billion dollars. the president says he's trying to get more girls and women involved in this competition and in science and technology

careers. >> fewer than one in five bachelor degrees are earned by women. fewer than 3 in ten workers in science and engineers are women. that means we got half of the field or half of our team we're not even putting on the field. we gotta change those numbers. >> this -- this morning, the president also announced the extension of the program to help bolster science and tech education to 18,000 low income students in seven cities, including san francisco. live in in the newsroom, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. 30 minutes ago, president obama announced plans to keep fewer than 10,000 troops in afghanistan from this is the year we will -- in afghanistan. >> this is the year we will conclude combat operations in afghanistan. >> he followed this by a surprise visit to afghanistan on sunday. he said all but a handful will

be withdrawn by the end of 2016. hamid karzai has refused to sign the agreement. but both candidates in a runoff election to replace karzai said they would approve the plan. a fire in mariposa county is growing quickly and forcing the evacuation of about a hundred homes. it's burning near lake mcclure, east of turlock. it's burned about 900 acres with 27% containment. mad tori evacuation orders were issued for the homes. steeps are working in rugged terrain to put out hot spots and build lines. a twister such touched -- touched down in north dakota last night. take a look at that. nine people were injured. the tornado was so powerful, it destroyed eight trailer homes. thunderstorms are moving through the area but the weather service says the threat of more tornadoes is low.

outside our doors this afternoon, the sun is shining but it doesn't feel the same as yesterday. it's a lot cooler. giving you a live look there over the bay, the bay bridge and to the east where we have mostly sunny skies. but boy, anywhere from 3 to 6 to 10 degrees below what we have yesterday, temperaturewise. we are -- ridge of high pressure moving out. this system here purring it along. the onshore breeze picking it up. the winds were gusting to about 35 miles per hour through part, of the delta. fairfield reporting that and all of that cool air moving into the central valley, really. temperatures for today for our inland cities dropping off anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees. we're already feeling it. the winds in fairfield, 17 miles per hour. actually let up a little bit. concord reporting 8 miles per hour. 7 in oakland. napa 10. the winds will continue into

the afternoon and i think it will be especially breezy along parts of the coast. hayward, 12 miles per hour. 17 reported at sfo. let's take a look at your temperatures. 77 in concord right now. 77 in livermore. one of the warmer spots. 83 for antioch. you are expected to warm to 85. no 90s expected in our neighborhoods for today. 74 santa rosa. 62 in san francisco and along the peninsula you are checking in to the mid- to upper 60s. 68 follow mountain view. 70 degrees in the south bay of san jose. as we get into the afternoon i think again temperatures continuing to fall and we'll have those winds picking up to even 30 miles per hour along the coastline. so expect some brisk weather as we get through the second half of the day. temperaturewise, low 80s in store for the afternoon for parts of the north bay. we've got 79 for vallejo. we've got -- into thest bay, low 70s in oakland. 82 for livermore.

it is deadline day for l.a. clippers' owner donald sterling. he was until the end of the way to form amly respond to the document detailing charges tied to his infamous racist rant. but the league may not get a response from him. so far he's refused to pay the

$2.5 million fine. his wife shelley is in charged of a forced sale of the team. she's reportedly received offers as high as $1 billion. the man who launched a treasure hunt is speaking out. he calls himself hidden cash. in an interview with ktvu, he explain why he's been leaving clues and cash around san francisco. he made his money in san francisco real estate and wanted to do something fun. he's left $5,000 in envelopes around the city so far. >> use it to enjoy your life and to bring happiness to others. >> he adds he plans to leave envelopes with cash in them in san jose starting tomorrow. he will expand his hunt to los angeles next weekend. he eventually he hopes to get the idea worldwide. it's auction day for the $10 million of rare coins found in a northern california backyard. a couple was walking by and
