that breaking news as we first reported 30 minutes ago is that award-winning author and poet, maya angelou, has died at the age of 86. the mayor of winston-salem, income nbc said she was found unresponsive in her home this morning. >> she had been battling health problems. she canceled an appearance a couple of days ago at a luncheon where she was to be honored by mlb. her agent confirmed she passed away in her sleep this morning. she had been suffering from heart problems and other health problems for quite sometime. i saw her recently in san francisco. she was at the yerba buena center. she was very, very frail, could not even get out of a chair. but it was just the idea of seeing her in person that she was still there. it just makes you think about the magnitude of maya angelou. >> she was on "mornings on 2" several times. got to meet her.

skies. then in the afternoon, the winds could return, could top 25, 30 miles an hour, especially near the coast and right around the bay. temperatures not a big change from yesterday's readings. low 60s for the beaches. widespread 70s around the bay. the warmest locations back to the low to mid-80s. we'll talk about the drizzle chances in our five-day forecast but sal right now has an update on traffic. good morning, sal. >> mark, good morning to you. we're looking at a commute that is getting busier. if you are trying to get to the bay bridge, you will see slow traffic. 29 minutes the way it goes is not all that bad between the carquinez bridge, crockett and the macarthur maze. when you get to the toll plaza, we have a 30-minute drive time. it will take you more than a half-hour when all is said and done getting across in san francisco. no major problems. 580 westbound, slow traffic as you drive through the center part of the 580 interchange. westbound 580 there was an earlier crash as you got into livermore, but the traffic has

already been slow in the area. southbound 80 is slow. into the san jose, the slowest freeway is 101. pockets of slow traffic into sunnyvale. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. one man is dead. another person in the hospital after a double shooting at a gas station in vallejo. it happened at the five-star gas station on lincoln road west just off interstate 80 last night. the person who was killed was sitting in his car. ktvu's alex savidge has been following the story and is live at the gas station with new information about one of the victims. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, tori, good morning. vallejo police are searching for the person who opened fire last night in the middle of this busy gas station parking lot just off interstate 80. one man was killed. a second man likely an innocent bystander was wounded here. it appears from talking to witnesses that that surviving victim was simply a customer who was just walking through the parking lot at the time and was struck by gunfire. the clerk said five shots were

fired just after 9:00 last night. this is at the five-star gas station near sonoma and interstate 80. the shooter fired into a car that was parked near a gas pump, killing a 24-year-old man sitting inside. a second man also was hit by gunfire. police say he was not connected to the first victim. that man suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and is expected to survive. police say they don't know what led up to the gunfire here but luckily, there were a number of people in the parking lot who may have seen what happened. >> takes a little time to kind of gather them up and separate them and take their statements one by one. and that's kind of what they are doing right now as we speak. >> reporter: the clerk on duty last night told me after the shooting, the car the victim had been sitting in was driven off by someone else. the man with those gunshot wounds to his upper body was left behind here in the parking lot treated by paramedics, taken to the hospital but that's where he later died.

his name has not yet been released by authorities. and investigators don't have a description on that man's killer who remains on the loose this morning. police, though, are planning to check surveillance cameras from this gas station and some of the nearby businesses to see if those cameras captured any of what happened here last night as they search for the man who left -- search for the shooter who left one man dead and a second man wounded. live this morning in vallejo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. they were described as loving sons and daughters and devoted friends. the campus of uc santa barbara said goodbye yesterday to six students whose lives were cut too short. >> it's not normal. any of us who grew up in the '50s, '60s, '40s know life doesn't doctor to be like this. why should it be like this for you people who are young now? >> about 20,000 people gathered

at the stadium for the memorial service for the six students killed last friday night. speakers included the university's chancellor, uc president, janet napolitano, and the father of one of the victims. he rallied the crowd to pressure lawmakers into passing tougher gun control laws. uc santa barbara students will return to class today for the first time since the deadly attack. flags on all uc campuses will remain at half staff until sunday. there is only a couple of more weeks of class until final exams begin. students say while this is a terrible way to end the school year, they will never forget the way the school and the community came together. seth rogen, star of "neighbors" says movies like his are not to blame for the tragedy in santa barbara. he made those comments after a movie critic suggested that frat boy fantasies like this movie paint an unrealistic

picture for men. rogen responded by saying how dare you imply that me getting girls in movies caused a luna tick to go on a -- lunatic to go on a bam -- on a rampage. george chen and james hong were from san jose. they lived with elliot rodger. david wuan was visiting them. at san jose's lynn brook heal, james hong's drama teacher said hong helped to build theater sets and performed on stage. george chen went to leland high school in san jose. yesterday counselors were at the school helping the student and staff deal with their

grief. 7:08. a man was arrested in oakland after his brother was killed while the two of them struggled for a shot gun. it happened last night just before 7:30 at a home on eileen and adeline streets. police say the boys were arguing about the gun. during the struggle one of them was shot and killed. the police investigation continues. the jury for bryan stow's civil case against the l.a. dodgers could be set as early as today. this is video of stow outside a courtroom where jury selection began yesterday. stow suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2011 when he was attacked in the parking lot of dodger stadium. you now requires around the clock care. the civil suit claims the dodgers did not provide adequate security and should pay for his medical bills which could total $50 million throughout his lifetime. a wildfire still burning and growing in mariposa county, forcing people to investigate their homes.

now, this fire is east of lake mcclure. it's now burned 1300 acres. calfire says it's only 20% contained. crews from santa clara county are among the firefighters battling it on the front lines. several dozen homes have already been evacuated. several roads are also closed down at this hour. happening today -- a treasure hunt in the south bay. the mystery man who calls himself hidden cash and has been hiding cash around san francisco says he will start to give away money in san jose. and that's where ktvu's janine de la vega is with some of the theories on what this dash for cash is really all about. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the man who is hiding cash is on twitter. since we first hit the air at 5:00 a.m. talking about this, a number of followers have grown more than 11,000. you can see he's now at 133,000 followers. he hasn't left any new clues on

twitter. just he will be leaving cash in san jose. we randomly chose to be here at the shark tank because he's known sometimes to pick well- known landmarks. if you want to find the money, you need to follow the man known as hidden cash on twitter. for the past several days he's been leaving $50 to $100 stuffed in envelopes throughout the san francisco bay area. he told ktvu he made a fortune in real estate and wants to give some of his money away. hidden cash says he has fun doing these treasure hunts to people. yesterday, he left clues and had people running to pier 39 and lombard street. but he also chooses other obscure locations. he's left money at a beach and on construction equipment. some wonder if it's some sort of marketing ploy. >> it doesn't really matter, i don't think. i mean, if he wants to give it away to push his business, then that's advertising for him if

city's first female african- american cable operator. we're putting together more on her life and we'll continue to bring you more throughout "mornings on 2." it's been more than three years since a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami killed thousands of people in japan and debris from that disaster is still making its way across the ocean to the shores of the pacific northwest. a tow truck driver from washington state is now posting video of three different boats believed to be from the japanese tsunami. scientists are now inspecting maps to check the path and see if more tsunami debris could be headed to washington state. 7:16. there are more collisions between motorcycles and cars than ever before here in california. the experts are blaming the rise in more motorcyclists lane splitting. >> oh, my god! >> boy, that's horrible. did you know it's legal for

sook illists to cut between cars here in california? a lot of drivers don't know that and get real angry. the chp has a new program educating drivers. some motorcyclists say this may already be paying off. >> what i've noticed lane splitting on -- i lane split myself -- is -- people aren't as aggressive as they used to be. >> but cyclists say not all of the problems with cars and trucks are intentional. they say sometimes it's a case where drivers are on the phone and not paying attention to what's happening on the road around them. a state senate bill designed to outlaw lane split, it's been withdrawn until the author of the bill sees how well this driver education program is working. >> all right. want to check in with sal, see what's happening on the roads. how are things looking in the east bay? >> we had the b.a.r.t. delay on the system. there was an access door to one of the tunnels near lake merritt station that was open.

b.a.r.t. police wanted to go down and make sure no one was inside one of the tunnels but all of the trains were stopped. so getting through to lake merritt, which is a key station was held for a while. it sounds like because we have one of our crews there, the trains are rolling again. but they stop rolling for a while as police check the tunnel between lake merritt and fruitvale and the coliseum station. they checked all of the tunnels there to make sure no one was inside. 20, 30-minute delays. when the trains were stopped, everything was backed up. but trains are reportedly running again as we have someone at the lake merritt station who says trains are running and the police have left the scene. let's go to the eastshore freeway, if we can go back to the east shore, westbound. you see some slow traffic here. it's not as bad as it could be. there's some slow traffic there. i want to mention there is a crash northbound 85 in san jose. sounds pretty bad. northbound 85 to southbound 280

helped police track down and rescue a newborn that had been kidnapped from a hospital maternity ward in quebec. a police officer said he was about to cry as he cradled billion baby victoria and returned her to her mother. hours earlier, surveillance video captured the kidnapper who wore a nurse's uniform and was able to walk out of the hospital with the baby girl and drive away. the newborn's uncle says he actually saw the woman dressed up in scrubs take the newborn down the hallway. she told him it was for routine tests. >> the uniform, all of it, attitude. never presumed. she was a kidnapper. >> news of the abduction spread quickly on social media. two women who saw postings about it on facebook recognized the kidnapper and led police right to her. the parents posted a photo and their thanks online. most hospitals have electronic bracelets that are put on newborns to prevent anyone from

to the report about treatment delays at v.a. families. hagel is meeting with senior pentagon leaders about the review. currently the system provides care for more than 9.6 million active duty personnel, retirees an family members. hagel wants recommendations on how to make this system better. 7:26. next week, california voters will decide if the state should use bond money to help homeless veterans. now, navy pert patrick ovary spent ten years in the navy, including serving in iraq and afghanistan. he says he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the pressures of being a gay man in the military. now now he's found a temporary home at oakland's cross roads emergency shelter. but he says it's hard to find long-term, affordable housing and a job. >> i have many medals. but it means nothing when you can call come -- can come back

north carolina. back in 2002, she was here at ktvu, ross mcgown interviewed her right here on "mornings on 2." she had recently been battling health problems last week, she canceled a scheduled appearance at a luncheon. now, she was born in st. louis, missouri. she was molested as a child by her mother's boyfriend and didn't speak about that for five years because of that trauma. she's best known as a writer but she also worked as a singer, dancer and professor. she's written more than 30 books and is best known for her seven auto biographties -- auto biographsries -- autobiographies. along with her many accomplishments, she became the first african-american street car conductor in san francisco. she had many other connections to the bay area, including glide memorial church here in

a couple of hours. kaiser received a specific and credible criminal threat sometime on monday, and hospital administrators wouldn't say what the threat was. kaiser said yesterday's closure affected clinics and pharmacies but not the emergency room. the buildings were reopened about 12:30 yesterday afternoon. two assistant chiefs of the san francisco fire department have been suspended for their role in a suspected drunk driving crash one year ago. they are accused of violating department policy and responding to an incident involving a firefighter who hit a motorcyclist while driving a fire truck. surveillance video shows the rig hitting the motorcyclist at the intersection of 5th and howard. the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after skidding into a fire hydrant.

the fire truck driver was 43- year-old firefighter michael quinn, who has since resigned. investigators say his blood alcohol level several hours after the crash was 0.13 and that's well above the legal limit. the assistant chief has two fights to fight the suspension tied to the case. a public meeting will be held in antioch to discuss public safety in a particular neighborhood, sycamore drive and auto center drive. police say this area is notorious for drug play and crime. they want to start a task force to make the idea safer. other ideas include job training assistance and more recreational activities for young children. california's drought, sparing some bay area water agencies to explore the idea of sharing water in dry times. eight water agencies are

talking about ways they might be able to help each other out. the idea is to tie the systems together to share water where it's needed. >> our people in the bay area, they may live in one county, work in another county, so they -- they expect us to work together to make sure that their water supply is reliable no matter where they are living and working. >> another idea being talked about, building a large water plant that would serve the entire bay area. 7:39. a key vote is scheduled in development today over the future of a san mateo county beach. a proposed bill would order the state lands commission to negotiate public access to martins beach near half moon bay. surfers and coastal conservation groups support the effort. billionaire vino bought the property in 2010 and closed the only road leading to the beach. san francisco mayor ed lee is planning to offer george lucas a prime location for his

star wars museum. lucas has been looking for a place to house his star wars collection of art and memorabilia. the site being proposed by mayor lee is across the embarcadero from piers 30 and 32. this is where the golden state warriors were planning to build their new arena. the port of san francisco owns the lot and would lease or sell it to lucas. a plan to prevent flooding in downtown san anselmo is upsetting a lot of people who live in that community. residents say memorial park is the very heart of their city. well, now city leaders want to shut it down to a construction project that would turn the baseball fields into an emergency catch basin for floodwaters. if this plan moves forward, people in sannal sell mow would have -- san anselmo would have to use baseballfields and other aur yays -- baseball fields and other areas for two years until it's finished.

our newschopper2 has arrived on the scene of this overturned concrete truck here on the ramp from southbound 280 to northbound 85. you can see there are plenty of emergency vehicles here and that ramp is closed. this big rig that was carrying the concrete mixture here flipped over and didn't quite negotiate the turn. you can see that they are still working on it. another three hours before they reopen this ramp. we'll keep you posted and have another traffic update coming

up soon. 7:53. new this morning, two americans came under attack in afghanistan. they were riding in a u.s. consulate vehicle in the western part of the country. the government statement says they were lightly injured but the statement did not give any information about the attack. however, an afghan official says two men approached the vehicle, fired a rocket- propelled grenade and ran away. yesterday, president obama announces plans to withdraw troops from afghanistan by the end of 2016. he says american's combat mission will be over by the end of this year. the president wants to roll back the number of troops from 32,000 to just under 10,000. after 2016, only a small force will remain in an advisory role. since the u.s. went to war in afghanistan in late 2001, at least 2,181 americans have been killed. the man responsible for one of the biggest leaks in

google is developing a new version of a driverless car. this one does not have a gas pedal, brake pedal or steering wheel. instead, passengers get in and tell the car where they want to go. there is a button they can push to stop in case of an emergency and the front bumper is two feet of foam. the car cannot go faster than 25 miles an hour. google says there will be more than 100 prototypes on the road by the end of the year. and tesla has opinion hit with an unwelcomed surprise by the biggest credit rating company. the s&p 500 slapped the carmaker with a b minus ranking. that's six levels below an investment rate. s&p believes there's considerable uncertainty in tesla's long-term future. the report says tesla is smaller than other automakers, has fewer products and a limited demand. no other rating agencies have

and some cooling in a few minutes. sal has an update on traffic. good morning. >> good morning. we have a lot going on this morning. we have our newschopper2 over the scene of an overturned big rig that was carrying concrete mix on the ramp from southbound 280 to northbound 85. that ramp is completely shut down and the traffic is going to be affected because people on the other ramp, you see at the top there, they are stopping to take a look at this. it's quite a visual. chp has told us they are not going to reopen this ramp for another three hours. you can see fire crews are on the scene. there is also an oil slick and oil spill. they are on the scene to make sure there is safely handled but -- this is safely handled. the bay bridge toll plaza is a 30-minute drive time between the macarthur maze and the san francisco side of the bridge. 580 has been slow as usual

missouri but has many connections to the bay area. sheept went to san francisco's -- she went to san francisco's mission high school and continued to live in the city. and she became the first african-american street car conductor in san francisco. she is best known as a writer but worked as a singer, dancer and professor. she explained to ktvu why she abandoned a singing career and chose writing instead. >> in order to love and become great in anything, you have to love it. you must be willing to make sacrifices. you must be willing to say i can't come to this party and i can't go on that weekend, i've got to learn. well, i didn't love singing like that. i had a pretty good voice and i could sometimes stay on pitch, but i thought i better start back to writing. i might have something to say. >> and that she did. maya angelou has written more than 30 books and is best known for her series of seven

shy. george chen went to leland high. can counselors were at the school to help students and staff deal with their grief. teachers, parents and students in oakland will be holding a rally in a fight to save one of the oldest charter schools in the city. this morning's rally comes ahead of tonight's very crucial school board meeting deciding the fate of the ec reames charter schools. the -- ec reems charter school. many people feel shutting down this school would be a big mistake. >> a lot of these kids wouldn't be going to chabot science center, the zoo, the as' games or all of the fun things about oakland. >> the rally to save that school will be outside ec reems academy on macarthur boulevard. the meeting is tonight at 5:00. new hope for teachers at an east bay catholic high school who are involved in a growing controversy after they refused to sign a so-called morality clause in their contracts.

the bishop of the diocese met with teachers and students at oakland's bishop school yesterday and promised to clarify the language in the contract by next week. at least three teachers have refused to sign the contract which asks them to conform to roman catholic church document toe rin in the workplace and -- doctrine in their workplace and private lives. >> it appears some ream die -- dialogue occur -- some real dialogue occurred. >> some students launched a petition saying it would cause teachers to violate the contract and possibly be fired. it's become a mad dash for cash. a mysterious man has been hiding money in san francisco and leaving clues where the money can be found on twitter. today, he plans to hide cash in san jose. that's where janine de la vega is live. you just spoke with this mysterious man by phone.

what did he tell you? >> reporter: he called me on the phone and introduced himself and said, hi. i'm mr. hidden cash. he wouldn't tell me his real nail. he didn't want to be shown on camera but he's overwhelmed with the attention he's getting because he's been leaving hundred-dollar bills around the bay area. and he says he plans on making several cash drops here in san jose. he said possibly four to five. he anticipates making the first drop within the next hour. but, of course, he wouldn't say where. now, we just happened to choose -- to be in a central location in downtown san jose here at the shark tank, the s.a.p. center. we don't know exactly where the cash drop is gonna happen. now, this man has been leaving $50 to $100 bills stuffed in envelopes in the san francisco area for the past several days. he told ktvu he made a fortune

in real estate and wants to give some of his money away. but that it's also part of a social experiment. hidden cash says he has fun doing these treasure hunts for people. yesterday, he left clues on twitter and had people running to pier 39, lombard street and the palace of fine arts but he's used obscure locations. for example, taping the envelope to a parking meter or construction equipment. people in san jose we spoke to this morning, shared their thoughts. >> it's kind of cool to check up and see where the location is. but i mean, if i'm around, i would be happy to look for an envelope of cash. >> reporter: well, some people think this may all be a clever marketing gimmick. hidden cash had 11,000 twitter followers last sunday. we just checked and now he is up to 139,000. so it just keeping growing and growing. he assured me that, again, it's just a social experiment that he's doing for the good of people. i plan to talk to him more

one man is dead, another perp is in the hospital after a double shooting at a gas station in vallejo. it happened at the five star gas station on lincoln road west last night. the person who was killed was sitting in his car. alex savidge has been following the story since 4:30 this morning. he's live at the gas station with new information about one of the victims. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, tori, good morning to you. vallejo police say they do have solid leads as they work to track down the person who opened fire last night in the middle of this busy gas station parking lot leaving one man dead and a second man, an innocent bystander wounded. we're told that surviving victim was likely a customer who was just walking inside to pay for some gas when he was struck by gunfire. the clerk on duty last night told me at least five shots were fired. this was just after 9:00 and it happened at the five star gas station that's near sonoma boulevard and interstate 880.

police say the shooter fired into a car that was parked near one of the pumps killing a 24- year-old man who was sitting inside. that second man who was sit by gunfire, police say he was not connected to the initial victim. that man suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and he is expected to survive. police don't know what led up to this shooting but they say a lot of innocent people were put in harm's way. >> takes a little time to kind of gather them up and separate them and take their statements one by one and that's kind of what they are doing right now as we speak. >> reporter: the clerk on duty told me after the shooting last night, the car, the victim had been sitting in was driven off by someone else. so the man with those gunshot wounds to his upper body was apartly left behind in the parking lot -- apparently left behind in the parking lot. he was treated by paramedics. he died at the hospital. investigators don't have a description of the man,

shooter, who remains on the run. they are interviewing witnesses and are planning to go over surveillance video from this gas station and other businesses in area hoping to get a look at what happened here last night. we're live this morning in vallejo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:17. groups receiving special water rights here in california insist they are doing their part to conserve. we first brought you this story of 4,000 companies being allowed to use free water with very little oversight. we brought this to you on the morning news yesterday. these companies include the public utilities commission, pg&e and some forms. this arrangement dates back to when the groups first claimed water some centuries ago. some say despite the special status, they do take care to conserve water. >> we actually conserve all of the water we can in terms of making sure we're putting the water to the right use. we use our water here in this

forward that will lead to breaking this case. the man killed in a drive- by triple shooting has been identified. police say 19-year-old antonio turner was shot monday turning at keith and palau. he died at the hospital. two others were shot but they are expected to survive. the victims were at a barbecue when someone at a nearby car started shooting. no arrests have been made. turning now to our continuing coverage of the masked killings near uc santa barbara as many as 20,000 people turned out for a very emotional memorial service yesterday honoring the six victims. ♪ >> the stadium on the school campus was packed for this tearful memorial and tribute for the six students killed last friday. speakers included uc president janet napolitano, fellow

two kaiser buildings were closed for two hours after a threat at broadway and macarthur boulevard. kaiser said it received a specific and credible criminal threat sometime monday. hospital administrators would not reveal the nature of the threat. kaiser closed -- said the closure yesterday morning affected some clinics and pharmacies but not the emergency room. the buildings were reopened around 12:30 yesterday afternoon. 8:40. a fremont man has officially been charged with murder in the strangulation death of his life. 39-year-old anita sidhu was found strangled in the come's home on royal palm -- in the couple's home on royal palm drive. police say her husband, balvir singh, confessed to the crime. but the motive is still not clear. family members tell ktvu that singh arrived in the united states from india just six weeks ago, having trouble finding work because he doesn't

speak english. 20 minutes before 9:00. two assistant chiefs of the san francisco fire department have been suspended for their role in a suspected drunk driving crash nearly one year ago. they are accused of violating department policy and responding to an incident involving a firefighter who hit a motorcyclist while driving a fire truck. surveillance video shows the fire department rig hitting the motorcyclist at the intersection of fifth and howard. the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after skidding into a fire hydrant. the fire truck driver was 43- year-old firefighter, michael quinn, who has since resigned. investigators say his blood alcohol level several hours after the crash was 0.13, well above the legal limit of .08. the assistant chiefs now have two weeks to fight the proposed suspension tied to the case. a random act of kindness. it was aimed at local

happening today, it's become a mad dash for cash. a mysterious man hiding money throughout the bay area for people to find. today, he's giving it away in san jose. that's where ktvu's janine de la vega is live and janine, you have spoken to mr. hidden cash this morning. any clues where the money will be? >> reporter: you know, i've been sworn to secrecy. he did tell me that he's going to be dropping cash in numerous locations, possibly four or

five. he just tweeted out, i want to say within the last seven seconds and said, first ever san jose drop across from where the sea creatures play, a dog pees in the fall. it's a picture of a fire hydrant. that's the clue he left to everybody. he will be leaving them at random locations throughout the day in san jose. this man known as hidden cash has been leaving $50 to $100 bills stuffed in envelopes in the san francisco bay area for the past several days. he told ktvu he made a fortune in real estate and wants to give some of his money away. it's also part of a social experiment. hidden cash says he has fun doing the treasure hunts for people. yesterday, he left clues on twitter and had people running to pier 39, lombard and the palace of fine arts. he's also used obscure locations like taping envelopes to a marking meter or

construction equipment. people in san jose, we spoke to shared their thoughts. >> power to him, i guess. i think it's cool. but i mean, i'm not probably gonna go out of my way to -- if he drops a clue, i'm not gonna ride over there and check it out. >> reporter: some people think this may be a clever marketing gimmick. hidden cash had 11,000 twitter followers last sunday. now he's at about 141,000 followers. there's even speculation that the account may be sold because of the base of followers. again, when i spoke to him on the phone, he said he's doing this as a social experiment for good, there wants to give back -- that he wants to give back. he has a friend helping him with the drops. there's a lot of planning going forward with this. we're definitely keeping our eye on twitter. i've been told, it has already been dropped, it will happen
