live on our air. the man who found some loot a voice known for poetry and civil rights was silenced today. maya angelou has died. good afternoon. i'm john sasaki in for tori campbell. the accomplishments of maya angelou are almost too long to list. poet, novelist, actress, singer, activist, even a recipient of the presidential medal of freedom. she was not born in the bay area but has a lot of ties here including family. tara moriarty is in oakland with more on her life and she spoke with maya angelou's son within the past hour. >> reporter: we're here at kaiser park where a statue of the famous poet now sits. we notice that people have been coming by and remembering the writer who touched so many people's lives. >> lift up your eyes upon this day breaking for you.

give birth again to the dream. >> reporter: president bill clinton's 1993 inauguration, that was the first time many americans heard maya angelou's voice. she was best known for her series of autobiographies. she was born in st. louis but spent a lot of time in the bay area graduating from george washington high school in san francisco. she spoke to ktvu back in 2002 on "mornings on 2" talking about how at the age of 16 she became the first african- american cable conductor. >> i took the money from passengers who were riding. >> you worked on -- >> i worked on it. and i had a money changer and i wore a uniform. i stead step up, please. ding, ding. >> reporter: we were able to speak with guy onson, her son. his mother instilled in him a great love of literature. he grew up to become an author.

he said when he was little he would test her. >> eventually one has to admit mom was really smart. >> reporter: what do you think you will miss most about her? >> her love and the ability to call her. i saved her last message on my phone and i'll never take it off. >> reporter: now, maya angelou was in in san francisco in 2012 and visited glide memorial and was there to celebrate see sill william's 50th anniversary to celebrate the church. a memorial service will be planned for her at glide when he returns to north carolina where the family plans to scatter her ashes in the mountains. there's supposed to be a vigil arranged by the artist who remembered maya angelou and the time has not been determined. we're live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. in north carolina, where maya angelou lived, many are

remembering her support of literature and the creative arts in the community. the city is working with her family on a suitable memorial for the icon. she had been a professor at wake forest university in winston-salem for more than 30 years. >> i've been with hear so many times where i saw her lend her very powerful voice. she had that very strong, powerful voice but she lent that voice to causes she believed in, such as ensuring social justice, prevention of domestic domestic violence. >> she was in the midst of creating a black theater hall of fame and hoped that effort would continue. president obama and the first lady joined millions around the world to pay tribb a butte to maya angelou -- pay tribute to maya angelou. he said the voice she found helped generations of americans find their rainbow amidst the clouds and inspired the rest of

us to become our best self-s. we have more information at ktvu.com. happening now -- a s.w.a.t. operation is underway in concord as part of a bay area wide sting. walnut creek police are involved and it's a multi- agency operation led by the d.e.a. officers are wearing protective gear at this location so they could be looking for dangerous chemicals. this is a view from newschopper2. we also caught up with a search at a home in pleasant hill. we heard that south san francisco police are involved. there may be a location there. there are few details on the scope of the operation or what they are looking for. san francisco police are looking for an at-risk 101-year- old man. he was last seen at 7:30 last night. police say he frequents the city's chinatown neighborhood. he's considered at risk due to his age and high bloop. he's described as 5'6", weighing 148 pounds. he has a mole on his upper lip.

anyone who may have seen him is asked to call san francisco police. parents and teachers are fighting the possible closure of one of the oldest charter schools in oakland. a report has been issued recommending denial of a five- year charter for reems academy. at a press conference this morning, school officials said enrollment is declining at many oakland schools and test scores at reems are trending upward. >> we're in a highly vol ta till community -- volatility community. our students require much more support than students who live in homes. >> school officials say the closure would be a tragic loss for the students. they will consider the issue at 5:00 tonight at a meeting. students at uc santa barbara are trying to get life back to normal after last

friday. many say things will never be normal again. an drup spencer was at the campus as students went back to class with heavy hearts. >> reporter: students may go back to their regular routines today but that doesn't mean things are getting back to normal. flags at half staff underscore the mood at the santa barbara campus as thoughts of tuesday night's memorial service and last friday's rampage continue to weigh on the mibdz of many -- minds of many. six students were killed. >> george chen, james hong, david wang. >> reporter: the suspect's roommates mentioned in his manifesto and stabbed inside the home. >> katherine cooper, veronika weiss. >> reporter: sorority sisters. and a student apparently shot at random inside a deli. martinez's father has drawn the

attention of lawmakers after he accused politicians of not doing enough to keep his son safe. he says one congress member called him to express condolences. >> i told that person, i was not interested in a phone call from them to express their condolences and sadness about what happened to chris. that was unacceptable, until that person went back to congress and actually did something. >> reporter: martinez also talked to the crowd of roughly 20,000 people about the victims reading statements from the other families before talking about his own son. i'm andrew spencer reporting. >> flags at all university of california campuses will fly at half staff through sunday in memory of the victims. a new public private survey on cybercrime shows that hackers are getting the upper hand. san jose consulting firm pwc and the secret service are two of the co sponsors of the 500 u.s. businesses taking spart mountain in the survey, 75%

detected a security breach in the past year. the average number of attacks per organization was 135. about 25% of the attacks were done by insiders. a shooting at a crowded gas station left one man dead and an innocent bystander injured. alex savidge has details on the evidence police have found. >> reporter: the five-star gas station near interstate 80 and sonoma boulevard was blocked off by crime scene tape last night after someone opened fire on a man sitting in a car parked near one of the pumps. the 24-year-old died at the hospital. and a second man was wounded in this shooting. witnesses say the customer was walking into the station when a stray bullet struck him in the foot. he's expected to survive. >> it's extremely dangerous, you know, and you -- maybe you are at the wrong place at the wrong time and then you get struck by gunfire. luckily, for him and for us, he

wasn't deadly wounded. >> reporter: a witness heard around nine shots last night. the shooter was firing towards the victim's car but one of the bullets hit this pump. another hit the innocent bystander. police don't know what prompted the gunfire. >> right now we don't have a motive. we don't have a suspect. we have some leads to follow up on. >> reporter: the man who was killed has not been identified. police have not put out a description of his killer. detectives are checking surveillance cameras from their gas station to see what they show and at the same time, they are interviewing many witnesses who were here when the shooting happened. investigators say they do have some solid leads in this case. in vallejo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. first a mystery man put envelopes of money around san francisco. today, it was san jose's turn. >> keep looking. >> i got it. president obama gave the graduation address today at the united states military academy at west point. the president told the graduating cadets he will always be ready to take military action when america's vital interests are at stake. however, president obama said he will always look for alternatives in situations like syria where american security is not directly threatened. >> if i ever sent you into harm's way simply because i saw a problem somewhere in the world that needed to be fixed or because i was worried about critics who think military intervention is the only way for america to avoid looking weak -- >> the president also said the wars in iraq and afghanistan have taught the u.s. the importance of seeking help from partners. he said america will act alone militarily if it's necessary.

john kerry is telling edward snowden to man up and come home. he was asked about snowden during an interview today after snowden made a rare televised appearance from russia. kerry said if he wants to come back to the u.s., he will be on a flight today. snowden blames the united states for leaving him stuck in russia. he also defended his credentials as a spy. >> i was trained as a spy in the traditional sense of the world. i lived and worked undercover overseas pretending to work in a job that i'm not even being assigned a name that was not mind. >> snowden says he's worked under kov for the cia, nsa and other agencies. he's accused of leaking tens of thousands of documents to the media and could get up to 30 years in prison in convicted. keep looking. keep looking. >> i got it. i got it. >> joy live on tv. that was the scene on "mornings on 2" this morning.

we were there when a lucky searcher found some of the cash a mystery donor is leaving around town. the mystery man dropped the cash throughout the bay area and has made a stop in san jose delighting people by sending them on a treasure hunt. it all played out live on "mornings on 2" as janine de la vega was reporting in downtown san jose. she was there as the lucky winter found their loot. >> he works fast and often goes unnoticed this morning the mystery man known as hidden cash on twitter taped an envelope stuffed with money on a fire high adraent across -- fire high adraent across -- fire hydrant across from the s.a.p. center. that's alex doxie from san jose, frantically he quickly spots the envelope. [laughter] >> see, i want him to find it. there is a fire hydrant. wait a minute.

he found it. >> reporter: the reaction was priceless and that's what the anonymous donor says he wants to make people happy. he made money in real estate and is spreading the wealth. >> open it. what's in there? >> oh. drops of money out l.a. may get a visit. back to you. >> the man found the money live and many of the newsroom cheered. we have the whole thing at ktvu.com. so check it out. we started out the day with mostly cloudy skies. right now, we still have mostly sunny skies. temperatures beginning to recover after a cool start in a few neighborhoods. here's the view in the south bay. in san jose a lot of sunshine. on track to reach the upper 70s for your wednesday afternoon. live stormtracker2, you can see a few lie clouds approaching the southeastern -- high clouds approaching the southeastern portion of the state. a lot of sunshine for your wednesday. but another key component to the forecast for today will be the wind speeds. winds will continue to pick up into the afternoon hours. as far as current numbers out there, showing you a lot of 60s and 70s already. livermore right now checking in

73 degrees. santa rosa, mid-70s. san francisco in the upper 60s and mountain view 70 degrees. talking about the wind speeds. the latest reports out there, nothing too strong towards fairfield, concord or oakland. oakland, 14 miles an hour. santa rosa wind gusts to 21 miles an hour. and a few more reports for you down towards the south bay. san jose winds out of the most at 12 miles an hour. sfo winds beginning to pick up. 17 and that trend will continue basically all afternoon. for today, we do have this -- mostly sunny, breezy, windy, another live camera to show you. this is looking out towards the oakland estuary, with all of the wind out there, the visibility is excellent. you can see out towards san francisco way out here in the distance. the weekend, some changes for saturday. definitely more clouds saturday morning. we'll warm things back up by sunday. the overall pattern is not changing too much. the high pressure has been heating up the west the past

few days. it will gradually lose its grip later in the week for friday and saturday. as this weather system moves in from the north. mostly sunny, winds increase, 20, 30 miles an hour. the cool air up to the north will garage tuly move close -- gradually move close to the bay area. here is our forecast model showing you anincrease in the win -- an increase in the wind speeds. a lot of white caps looking out towards ocean beach. we have a small craft advisory posted for the boaters. warmest locations, low to mid- 80s. san francisco, 70. pacifica, 64. fremont, upper 70s. san jose, 79 degrees and a look ahead at your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view. maybe a touch warmer. barely warmer for your thursday and then we'll go the other direction by friday. we'll cool things off for friday. saturday probably a few more clouds and hinting at drizzle,

especially coastal side. that will be saturday morning. if you want the warmer temperatures, keep an eye on sunday, temperatures probably back up to the 70s, and 80s. a little bit of everything. things are really drying out out there. new at noon, a rally at san francisco city hall to call attention to the problem of homelessness in the lbgt community. one third of the homeless in san francisco identify as lbgt. they are taking their message to the board of supervisors which is meeting on the issue today. the group is calling for more housing and a reduction in ellis act evictions of lbgt tenants. a famous wrapper should consider keeping his day job. what is one of the worse first pitches in baseball. wants to run free, all you have to do is let it out.

plant but it stayed open due to a decrease in the salmonella rates. the giants' fan severely beaten outside of dodger stadium is back in a southern california courtroom today. this is video of bryan stow yesterday. he's in court for jury selection in his lawsuit against frank mccourt, the dodgers' owner. the suit alleges the team was negligent for not having enough security at the home opener. when he was attacked. two men accepted plea deals and were sent to prison. stow is said to be seeking about $38 million. it appears that donald sterling will not go down without a fight. the lawyer for him told espn his client is going to fight to the bloody end. he's disavowing the agreement he reached with his wife last week. the shelley sterling is continuing to move quickly to try to sell the team.
