it's sunday, june 1st, i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. rosemary with the temperatures. >> for the afternoon we have mostly cloudy skies, partly cloudy for the coast. at this hour it looks worse out there in areas where visibility is down to about a quarter-mile. i'm talking areas over parts of the north bay, along the coastline this morning, patchy drizzle as well. but it's not as widespread. the marine layer has shrunk some. yesterday we woke up to a 2,000-feet deep marine layer. this morning it's a thousand feet. a quicker burnoff expected today. the winds on shore but light, fairfield reporting 10 miles per hour. yesterday at this hour gusting to about 25. so all this adding to a warmer afternoon. 54 degrees now in concord.

56 livermore. most of us starting a lot like yesterday. it's a chilly start in novato, 44 and upper 40s in santa rosa. the second half of the day we'll have up to eight degrees of warming expected. look at these highs. get around the bay and we have mid-70s to low 80s. upper 60s to low 70s for the downtown san francisco area and low 60s expected in pacifica. again, with partly cloudy skies. today is going to be one of the warmest days. we begin a cooldown tomorrow and then changes as we get into the extended forecast. that is coming up. we are following developing news in san francisco where an fbi search started yesterday morning, stretched well into the night. ktvu alli rasmous to tell us more. >> reporter: sometimes in the overnight hours the scene was cleaned and the streets in

jackson between polk and vanness was reopened. this is what it looked like outside yesterday. fbi agents suited from head-to-toe in hazmat suits, executing a search warrant as part of a federal criminal investigation. police were helping the fbi secure the area. according to a source yesterday the fbi is looking for a man named ryan chamberlain who according to investigators is believed to have been storing hazardous materials in his apartment. as of last night the fbi says they had not made arrests connected to this case. they were still searching for mr. chamberlain. the search of this apartment lasted about 15 hours. during that time many other residents on the block were not allowed to return to their homes. we've contacted the fbi this morning to get an update on the investigation, we're waiting to hear back from them and as soon as we get some information from them we'll bring it to you later on, on mornings on 2.

new this morning -- deputies say a drunk driver crushed intoen a almeida county patrol car in hayward, 4:42 this morning. officials say the deputy was stopped at hathaway avenue and west a street when hit head on by a vehicle. the driver of that vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. no one was hurt in the accident. happening now -- athletes from around the world are out on san francisco bay gearing up for the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon. this is video from last year's triathlon. the event kicks off in about 30 minutes with the 1.5-mile swim. athletes then cycle 18 miles down the great highway and through golden gate park. the race finishes with an eight-mile run through the presidio that ends at marina green. about 2,000 people will be attempting the escape. tomorrow an oakland police officer will be stationed at an elementary school where a 9-year-old was teablghtd with a hammer -- attacked with a hammer. it happened at lafayette

elementary school in west oakland friday morning. police say the mother of another student lured the girl into a bathroom and attacked her. the girl is expected to recover. the woman was arrested of assault with a deadly weapon. this morning the search for six climbers missing on mount rainier in washington state has been suspended. hopes are fading to find anyone alive. reporter joanna smalls is live with the dangerous conditions facing search crews and what we are learning about one of the climbers. >> reporter: we're told by people with alpin international that the president of the outfitter and six families of the people missing and feared dead on mount rainier will be here this morning at 11:00 to discuss what happened. just a few moments ago we ran into the father-in-law of one of the young men lost on that mountain. he tells us his son-in-law was from new jersey. the entire family has flown in from the philadelphia area. they are just devastated.

we know at least one of the other families is already here from minnesota. that young man, 26-year-old mark mahaney was part of the expedition as well as the lead guide who is from northern california. no others have been identified yet. searchers can say what they think happened here but didn't find anyone yesterday. they used two helicopters and were able to spot climbing gear that led rangers to the conclusion that the party fell more than 3,000 feet while trying to ascent on one of the mountain as most challenging routes called liberty ridge. that is a fall that they and other experienced climbers admit is most certainly deadly. that is why rangers didn't go in by foot where they believe they will likely find these six people. the gear was found and a glacier but failing rock and ice make it extremely dangerous in the area. sadly the group may not be found until the snow melts. that is searchers say, they

they have to wale until the weather improves. for now they will give grieving families what they believe happened here. >> joanna small reporting from washington state. seven people were killed after a private jet crashed in massachusetts. it happened at 9:40 last night near hanscomb air force base in bedford, 20 miles outside of boston. the jet was headed to atlantic city airport and it appears it caught fire after takeoff. officials say lewis katz, co-owner of the philadelphia enquirer is among the victims. >> the jet crashed on departure from hanscomb. with seven people on board. i am sorry to report there were no survivors. >> katz was one of two business moguls who bought out their partners last week with an $88 million bid for the inquirer. the national transportation safety board says it's

ininvestigating the crash. chp is investigating a deadly crash that shut down traffic on highway 84 for hours, it happened 5:45 last night on the eastbound lanes of highway 84 just east of i-680 in almeida county. police say a big rig and red car crashed head on killing the driver of the car. the big rig driver suffered minor injuries. a white suv also crashed into the big rig. the pregnant driver was injured. >> preliminary reports have it that the red vehicle, red ford, was traveling in the eastbound direction, crossed over the double yellow line somehow and hit the big rig. >> chp says it took more than two hours for the roadway to reopen. a playground in vallejo off limits after it was destroyed in a suspicious fire. neighbors say the smell of burning plastic spread across the neighborhood shortly after that fire started. >> it could have been an

electrical fire somewhere. a lot of burnt rubber. >> investigators think arsonists may to be blame because the jungle gym and bark chips on the ground were burning separately. one man says he saw a group of children leaving the school minutes before that fire started. >> with the kids running by and hearing the conversation i kind of figured maybe they were up to something because i saw them in the school earlier playing. >> the fire caused $25,000 in damage. no one was hurt. thousands of music fans are expected for the final day of the bottle rock music festival. as many as 30,000 people were expected to the napa valley expo this weekend to see 60 different artists performed. no major problems reported but police are still out in force looking for drivers who are under the influence. neighbors have also raised concerns about noise and traffic. this year's festival has a new promoter after the company that produced the show last year declared bankruptcy.

family and friends are anxiously awaiting the return of sergeant bowe bergdahl after his release by the taliban. he was captured in 2009 just two months after he deployed to afghanistan. he spent five years in captivity before the white house secured his release in exchange for freeing five detainees at guantanamo bay. bergdahl's father grew out his hair in support of his son and spoke out about his son's release at the white house. >> thank you so much.

67 san francisco. 79 san rafael. today will be the warmest day. we take a drop tomorrow and in the extended forecast a bigger warm-up. i'll show that you coming up. we're following developing news in san francisco where a nearly 15-hour fbi search just wrapped up early this morning. ally rasmous with more. >> reporter: according to a source on scene yesterday the fbi was looking for a man by the name of ryan chamberlain. according to neighbors he lived in this apartment building behind me. fbi agents yesterday were conducting a search -- executing a search warrant as part of a federal criminal investigation. according to investigators he's believed to have been storing hazardous materials in his apartment. fbi agents did an exhaustive search of the building between polk and van ness.

and were on the scene from 8:00 yesterday morning until the overnight hours. the san francisco fire department and police were also here with police helping the fbi secure the area. while the search was going on the street was completely closed, people who lived in some of the other apartment units in the building were not allowed to go back home while the search was underway. that search wrapped up overnight last night. we have contacted the fbi this morning an we're trying to get more information on this investigation. as soon as we get an update from them we'll bring that to you on mornings on 2. deputies who checked on elliot roger weeks before the isla vista rampage are now being questioned as part of an internal investigation. four deputies, a university police officer and dispatcher in training responded to a request for a well fare check a month before the attack. the responding deputies described roger as timid and polite and determined he was not an immediate threat to

anyone. investigators say the deputies didn't watch the disturbing videos posted on youtube though were aware of them. memorials to honor the victims are growing in isla vista. police say elliot roger killed six people before shooting himself, flowers and candles have been set up at each of the places where the victims were killed. yesterday uc santa barbara students spent the dahonoring the victims. >> we're getting people together to walk around to the different memorial sites to remember each of the victims. >> the walk was sponsored by the brady campaign which is working to reduce gun violence. santa barbara district attorney filed a motion to dismiss a case against one of the bay area victims. in january elliot roger accused his roommate james hong of san jose of stealing some candles and called police to report it. he was booked and later paid a fine. the district attorney told the san jose mercury news she wants to clear hong's record for the

sake of his family. he was stabbed to death along with two other bay area students that shared the apartment with roger. wong graduated from freemont christian school before attending uc santa barbara. a man killed by a bart train has been identified. bart officials say 22-year-old tyler warden was walking on the tracks when struck after 10:00 friday night. passengers were forced to stay on the train for about two hours until the scene was cleared. the service between oakland and san francisco resumed about midnight. this morning we are learning the identity of the two workers killed in a construction accident in yolo county. officials say 49-year-old glen hundredthen of richmond and 29-year-old marcus st. powell of reading died when a basket held by a crane broke loose friday.

it was at the site of the new car bridge. osha is investigating the deaths. there's no word on when construction will resume. a new report in the city of oakland reviewing seven years' worth of records of police officers and other city workers who retired on disability. the city recently learned a former police officer who left because of an injury in 2004 was working as an fbi agent in boston. according to the san francisco chronicle aaron mcfarland was collecting more than $52,000 a year in disability pay. reports says he was identified as the officer that shot and killed a friend of one of the suspects in the boston marathon bombing. happening now -- the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon just kicked off in san francisco. this is video from last year. today swimmers are making the 1.5-mile swim. athletes then will ride 18 miles down the great highway and golden gate park and then an eight-mile run through the presidio that ends at marina green. phil mickelson confirms

san francisco will vote on pop a, a bond -- prop a, a bond measure to upgrade the emergency response system in the city. the cannabis coalition says they will offer free marijuana to voters but there must be proof voters cast a ballot and must have a medical marijuana card there. are concerns the incentive may violate federal laws. pet adoptions continue in nearly 100 bay area shelters and pet stores for the biggest adoption event in the united states. nine states across the country are taking part in the annual mahdi's pet adoption days. the two-day event kicked off yesterday. the maddie's fund has donated $2,000 for every dog, cat and bunny that is adopted. >> if you're in the market for a pet come on down and get a free animal. >> all the adoptions are free and all the animals have been spayed and neutered. the group set aside $10 million for this year's event.

designated campgrounds with permission. the ban is taking effect about two weeks earlier than last year, a month earlier than 2012 because of the high fire danger. the ban will be in effect through the end of fire season. the atlantic hurricane season starts today and weather experts are testing new ways to improve the forecast. for the first time researchers are going to be dropping small drones into storms. they are hoping to learn more about how the storms strengthen so they can better predict the intensity. forecasters are predicting 18 tropics and three to six hurricanes. the atlantic hurricane season runs through november 30th. beautiful start to june at least in parts of the bay area. in other parts it's a little cloudy and gloomy to start this new month in the bay area. >> yeah, a a perfect gloomy start to the day. getting across the bay bridge may have a tough time. visibility is low this morning in areas like san francisco, along the coast over parts of the north bay, it's very soupy out there at least from this direction.

you get into the east bay and plenty of sunshine, a beautiful start to your morning, let's look at the overview. we have the morning clouds. we have the patchy fog and it's thick in cases. it has to do with the ridge of high pressure that is dominating our weather pattern for today. the sinking air associated with that is bringing that marine layer, sort of panning it closer to the ground and that is what creates that very thick fog even patchy drizzle a possibility over parts of the coast. perhaps inland as well. that's what we're dealing with this morning. on the flip side, the marine layer is shallower by a thousand feet. we have a quicker burnoff going on today. temperatures warmer this afternoon as well with warmer air moving into the bay area. so mid to upper 80s in the forecast for today. yesterday most of us were in the low 80s at least for the inland cities. for today around the bay we'll see an increase in temperatures as well. the onshore breeze not going to go away completely but it's fairly light. fairfield reporting 10 miles per hour, yesterday it was gusting to 20 25á and we know

into parts of the north bay but we want to take you to where there is sunshine. into the inner east bay. you can see mount diablo, mostly sunny skies, just a little haze and humidity. good air quality today. storm tracker 2 is going to be a quiet day. ridge of high pressure will be in place for today. that will drive our temperatures up. also helping to sort of squash that marine layer. so it's half of what it was yesterday. yesterday we woke one a 2,000-feet deep marine layer this morning. about a thousand feet and sinking air associated with that ridge of high pressure is pushing it closer to the ground. so we're also waking up with very soupy thick fog along the coast. seeing it in san francisco. visibility down in areas like santa rosa, the good news is because the marine layer is shallower it will burn off quicker. i'm already seeing it begin to clear out. 58 degrees now in walnut creek. a lot of the numbers like yesterday morning. so if you're stepping out you know what to expect. it's a chilly start in novato,

santa rosa, mid to upper 40s there. areas like fairfield mostly sunny and already 61 degrees. 58 pittsburg. and -- afternoon highs three to six degrees warmer than yesterday. 87 for antioch as well as livermore. low 80s for napa, santa rosa. widespread 60s and 70s around the bay, even 80s expected in redwood city and low 80s in san jose. it's going to be warm. even a little above the seasonal average. temperatures will take a fall. as early as tomorrow. then we heat back up. a look at the extended forecast coming up. we are following developing news for you in san francisco this morning. where an fbi search started yesterday morning and stretched well into the night. ally rasmuss tells us what they were looking for. >> reporter: according to a

source from one of the agencies on scene yesterday the fbi is looking for a man by the name of ryan chamberlain who is, according to investigators police have -- say he's been storing hazardous materials in his apartment. according to neighbors the apartment building behind me is where chamberlain lived. there were multiple investigators going in and out of the building yesterday wearing hazmat gear, fbi agents executing a search warrant as part of a criminal investigation. the fbi says they've not arrested anyone in connection with this case and are still looking for chamberlain. the san francisco fire department and san francisco police were also on scene throughout the day and into the overnight hours as police helping the fbi secure the area. while the search was going on the street was completely closed, people who lived in the other apartment units in this building not allowed to go back home while investigators did their work and research was underway. we're still awaiting updated information from the fbi this morning about the status of the investigation. the search for chamberlain, and more details about what was found in his apartment.

again according to a source from one of the agencies who responded to the scene here yesterday the fbi is looking for a man by the name of ryan chamberlain believed to have been storing hazardous materials in that apartment building. we will continue to try and get more information from the fbi and bring it to you later in the show. live in san francisco,cut channel 2 news. deputies say a drunk driver crashed into an almeida county sheriff's patrol vehicle in hayward about 2:40 this morning. officials say the deputy was stopped at hathaway avenue and west a street and hit head on by the vehicle. the driver was arrested on suspicion of dui, no one was hurt. athletes from around the world are taking part in the 34th annual escape from alcatraz triathlon. it kicked off 30 minutes ago with the 1.5-mile swim this. is video i believe from last year. after that athletes will ride 18 miles down the great highway and through golden gate park.

the race finishes with an eight-mile run through the presidio that ends at marina green. about 2,000 people are attempting the escape. tomorrow an oakland police officer will be stationed at an elementary school where a 9-year-old was attacked with a hammer. it happened friday morning in west oakland. police say the mother of another student lured that third grader into a bathroom and then assaulted her. the girl is expected to recover. hasima diame was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. this morning the search for six climbers missing on mount rainier in washington state have been suspended because of dangerous conditions. and hopes are fading of finding survivors. a treck up liberty ridge was done yesterday, one of the most advanced areas of the mountain. rangers believe they fell 3,000 feet and couldn't have survived.

signals from the climbers' emergency beacons were detected in an area known for falling rocks, snow and ice. search crews have been unable to reach the area because of the extreme avalanche danger. >> basically this search has come to a very tragic end. not viable that anybody would survive. >> this is a worst climbing disaster on mount rainier since 1981 when 11 climbers were killed by an avalanche on the ingram glacier. it's one of the most popular destinations in the world for climbers attracting as many as 50,000 climbaries year. chp is investigating a deadly crash that happened 9:45 last night on the eastbound lanes of highway 84 east of 680 in alameda county. chp says big rig and red car crashed head on killing the driver of the car. a white suv also crashed into the big rig, the driver of the

white suv who was pregnant was not injured -- was injured. >> preliminary reports have it that the red vehicle, red ford, that was traveling in the eastbound direction crossed over the double yellow line somehow and hit the big rig. >> officers say it took more than two hours for the roadway to reopen. school playground in vallejo off limits to students now after it was destroyed in a suspicious fire. it broke out 10:00 yesterday afternoon at loma vista elementary school on rainier avenue. neighbors say the smell of burning plastic spread across that neighborhood shortly after the fire started. >> it could have been like an electrical fire somewhere. you could smell it. a lot of burnt rubber smell. >> investigators believe arrestists are to blame because arrestists are to blame -- arsonists are to blame. >> with the kids running by and

hearing their conversation i figured that maybe they were up to something because i saw them in the school earlier playing. >> the fire caused about $25,000 in damage. no one was hurt. thousands of music fans are expected in napa today for the final day of the bottlerock music festival. as many as 30,000 people are expected, the pack the napa valley expo this weekend to see artists perform. no major problems reported but police still out there in full force to look for drivers under the influence. neighbor also raised concerns about noise and traffic. this year's festival has a new promoter after the company that produced the show last year declared bankruptcy. >> see the full line-up at ktvu.com. many bottlerock fans face long waits after the festival yesterday for a cab or bus. many people waited in line for two hours to take a shuttle bus to the main parking area.

a promise we've been able to keep. >> president obama spoke out following bergdahl's release saying he was never forgotten during his years in captivity. the white house has not commented on reports that bergdahl may have been captured by the taliban after deserting the military in afghanistan. >> our primary focus i think as you all know was getting sergeant bergdahl back. we've done that as i said, as president obama said, as a result of the help of a lot of people. >> defense secretary chuck hagel also spoke out about bergdahl's release. he says it's possible it could lead to further negotiations with the taliban but that was not the focus of the swap. hagel also says he hopes to meet privately with bergdahl as soon as he's able to. two republican lawmakers say the exchange of prisoners at guantanamo bay for sergeant bergdahl violated u.s. law.

congressman howard mckeean of los angeles and a senator from oklahoma says the president is required by law to notify congress 30 days before the transfer of any terrorism detainee. the white house says the prisoner exchange under unique circumstances. mckeean is the chairman of the armed services committee. a bay area mother says she can only imagine the joy and release the bergdahl family is experiencing. >> my husband and i had three sons and -- in iraq and afghanistan and many, many times and i can't imagine what happened to the sergeant happening to one of my boys. but i can imagine the excitement and relief and all the emotions that the parents are feeling. >> she's a founding member of the east bay blue star moms offering support to troops when deployed and after they return home. you can find more on bowe bergdahl return on ktvu.com.

chuck hagel arrived in afghanistan this morning for the handover of security to afghan forces. hagel's visit to bagram airfield comes a week after president obama also made a surprise trip there. hagel is scheduled to get an update for plans on u.s. forces to withdraw from afghanistan by the end. year. leaving just 10,000 troops. president obama called for fewer than 1,000 troops to remain in afghanistan by the ends of 2016. 8:17. it's the escape from alcatraz triathlon. rosemary, pretty foggy on san francisco bay. i'm sure if i was there i would get lost somewhere. >> it's very thick. thankfully they've been practicing. in the meanwhile as they run and the rest of their race they are actually in pretty good shape because they've got cloudy cool conditions. that is nice when you're trying

around the bay and upper 60s at the shore. back to you. an army veteran is back home with his family after surprising them at a little league game in sutter county. it was the last game of the season for the young players and before 5-year-old wyatt jensen was called to the field his father corporal andrew jensen came out for the surprise. it had been a year since he saw his father. at first he didn't recognize him. [ applause ] >> corporal jensen said he planned the surprise with his mother about two months ago. he says his family wasn't expecting him to return until sometime in june but after serving for five years and two overseas deployments he's now back with his family for good. it is one of the largest aids charity events in the world.

hazardous materials in his apartment. as of last night the fbi said they've made no arrests, still searching for chamberlain but the search of this apartment lasted for more than 15 hours from 8:00 in the morning yesterday well into the hours overnight. during that time many of the residents on this block were not allowed to return to their homes. we're still awaiting an update from the fbi this morning to ask them about, more specifically what may have been found if anything in this apartment building and where they believe mr. chamberlain is. we're wait to to -- waiting to hear back from them. we'll bring it to you as soon as we can. deputies who checked on elliot roger weeks before the isla vista rampage are being questioned as part of an internal investigation. four deputies, a university police officer and dispatcher in training responded to a request for a welfare check a month before the attack. the responding deputies described him as timied and

polite and determined he was not an immediate threat to anyone. investigators say the deputies didn't watch the disturbing videos he posted on youtube though they were aware of them. memorials to honor the victims of the rampage are growing in isla vista, police say roger killed six people before shooting himself. flowers and candles have been set up at the places where the victims were killed. yesterday uc santa barbara students spent the dahonoring those victims. >> we're getting people together to walk around to the different memorial sites to remember each of the victims. >> the walk was sponsored by the brady campaign which is working to reduce done violence. the santa barbara district attorney filed a motion to dismiss a death case against one of the bay area victims. elliot roger had accused his roommate, hong of stealing candles, later reported it.

he was booked later and the prosecution wants that case dismissed in honor for his family. david huang is also stabbed in the rampage. there is a memorial service tonight. a man hit and killed by a bart train at the west oakland train identified. bart officials say 22-year-old tyler warden was walking on the tracks when struck after 10:00 friday night. passengers were forced to stay on the train for about two hours until the scene was cleared. then service between oakland and san francisco resumed around midnight. this morning we have also learned the identities of the two workers killed in a construction accident in yolo county. officials say 44-year-old glen hodgson of richmond and 29-year-old marcus st. powell of reading died when a basket held by a crane broke loose friday night. that happened at the site of

the sinking air associated with that ridge of high pressure pushing that marine layer, pinning it down. that is why it's closer to the ground and that that is why we have patchy thick and dense fog along the coastline and parts of san francisco. it's getting better. already beginning to clear. temperatures at the coast for today, low 60s. just a tad warmer but i think we will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy along the coastline continuing for today. around the bay mid to upper 70s for some of the upper spots in inland cities, in the mid to upper 80s. i don't see 90s in the neighborhoods but we will get there eventually. i'll show you that in the extended forecast. onshore breeze is light but there. talking 9 miles per hour in fairfield. yesterday morning we started with a gust of about 25. so that onshore breeze not going to help out. if you don't like the heat we need that delta breeze through at least our inlicensed areas to get that cool air but not today. 49 degrees in santa rosa. one of the cooler locations with the fog overhead.

67 antioch where we started with mostly sunny skies. 66 in fairfield. get closer to the coast and temperatures are still holding about 50 degrees. half-moon bay has opinion stuck at 50 degrees for the last two hours. meanwhile some of the areas to the north, santa rosa has a bit of a climb there. you were 49 in the last half-hour. novato, still trailing behind as well. a bit of a chill in the air but many of us already mild. as we get into the second half of the afternoon by lunchtime even 60 at the coast. upper 70s for warmer locations already going to feel warm by lunch hour for areas like antioch, livermore, getting into morgan hill. then for the send half of the day going to 87 livermore, 67 san francisco, 62 pacificca. these numbers warmer than yesterday. will be the warmest, as we get into tomorrow a big drop coming our way and down the road a little we're back in the 90s. i'll show you when coming up. fbi investigation in san francisco that started

yesterday lasted through the early hours of the morning. ally with new information from the fbi now. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with an fbi agent that confirms that the agent is looking for san francisco resident ryan chamberlain as part of a criminal investigation. and yesterday a search warrant was executed on his apartment. this was the scene yesterday as agents in hazmat suits did a search that started at 8:00 a.m. of that apartment building. it went on into the overnight hours. agents in hazmat suits went in and out of the building throughout the day and into the night. san francisco police and fire also on scene helping the fbi secure the area. the fbi tells us this morning they have not found chamberlain. they have not made any arrests in this case yet. but that they are preparing to send out more information about the case and chamberlain including releasing his picture so they can get more leads on his whereabouts.

while the search was goes on yesterday the street was completely closed. people who lived in the other apartment units in the building were not allowed to go back home while the search was underway. again the fbi expects to release more information on this investigation shortly. i just got a text from the fbi agent i was talking to, she says she's in a meeting now, about 15 to 20 minutes from now she'll be prepared to give us more information on what is going on with this investigation. we'll provide all the latest updates on ktvu.com, on our twitter feed and of course in our 5:00 newscast later today. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a deputy was stopped at hathaway avenue and west 8th street and hit head on by another car. the driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of dui, no one was hurt. tomorrow an oakland police officer will be stationed at an elementary school where a

9-year-old was attacked with a hammer. it happened friday morning at lafayette elementary school in west oakland. police say the mother of another student lured that third grade near a bathroom and attacked her. the girl is expected to recover. the suspect is arrested with assault with a deadly weapon. she had apparently been feuding with the girl's family. the triathlon is underway in san francisco now. the 1.5-mile swim started 7:30 this morning. after that they ride 18 miles through the great highway and golden gate park. the race finishes with an 8-mile run through the presidio that ends at marina green. most are expected to finish in the next half-hour. this morning the search for six climbers missing on mount rainier in washington state has been suspended because of dangerous conditions there. hopes are fading of finding anyone alive.

climbers left monday on a treck up liberty ridge, one of the most advanced routes on the mountain. rangers believe they fell 3,000 feet and could not have survived. one of the climbers has been identified as matt hegeman of truckie, was a guide for the seattle alpine international and had climbed the area more than 50 times. emergency beacons have been detected in an area known for falling rocks, snow and ice. search crews have been able to reach the area though because of extreme avalanche danger. >> basically this search has come to a very tragic end. it's not viable that anyone would survive. >> it's the worst climbing disaster on mount rainier since 1981. mount rainier is one of the most popular destinations in the world for climbers attracting as many as 11,000 a year. chp is investigating a deadly crash that shut down traffic for hours on highway 84. it happened 5:45 last night on

eastbound lanes of highway 84 just east of i-680 in almeida county. chp says a big rig and red car crashed head on killing the driver of that car. the big rig driver suffered minor injuries. a white suv also crashed into the big rig, the driver who was pregnant was injured. >> preliminary reports have it that the red vehicle, red ford that was traveling in the eastbound direction, crossed over the double yellow line somehow and hit the big rig. >> officers say it took more than two hours for the roadway to reopen. school playground in vallejo off limits to students after it was destroyed in a suspicious fire it happened at loma lista elementary school yesterday. neighbors say it smelled like smoke shortly after it started. >> it smelled like a electrical fire, like burpt rubber. >> it's believed arsonists may

family and friends are anxiously awaiting the return of sergeant bowe bergdahl after his release by the taliban. bergdahl was captured in 2009 just two months after he deployed to afghanistan. he spent five years in captivity before the white house secured his release execs change for freeing five detapeees at guantanamo bay. bergdahl's father grew out his hair in support of his son and spoke of his son's release at the white house. >> thank you so much. we just can't communicate the words this morning when we heard from the president. >> bergdahl is the last known u.s. prisoner of war from the conflicts in iraq and afghanistan.
