long. ktvu's claudine wong has more. >> reporter: this is still an active search. this search will continue into the night and we have new information for you. the coast guard confirms they believe there was one person on board this 30-foot sailing vessel and that person was trying trying to go to hawaii. they were preparing for a long trip. the search area is north and central bay. you are looking from news chopper 2. i want to play where this is happening. all near the golden gate bridge. on both sides of the bridge. west side is where the distress signal came in. on the east side, that is where the vessel was discovered on the rocks. it has since sunk but divers went in the water and confirmed that the the 30-foot sailing vessel is under the water. they confirmed the identity of the boat.

work tonight in san francisco. the afternoon commute is suffering because hundreds of muni drivers called in sick and that left plenty of people hailing cabs or walking. ktvu's fanned out across the cities. rob roth is live with how bad it is tonight and what is being done to get the workers back on the job tomorrow? >> reporter: it is the heart of the afternoon commute here on market street and take a look at one example across the street. those people have been waiting for a bus, some have been there for half hour. there were headaches this morning. >> reporter: in san francisco today buses were few and far between. a lot of commuters are mad. so many muni operators called in sick today. only a third of the buses were

running. this man had been waiting for an hour. >> i called twice. first time said 3 minutes and then 30 minutes and then 8 minutes and 15 minutes and nothing. still waiting. >> reporter: this woman couldn't wait anymore. she was going to try the train. >> may lose my job waiting for the bus. >> the sick out comes days after workers rejected a contract proposal. 11.25% pay increase over two years but workers would have to pay 7.5% into their pensions. >> they are fed up and they are sick of being harassed and attacked. >> one of the drivers said this about the contract proposal. >> not really happy about that. >> reporter: muni said it made adjustments to the routes today. >> tryingtrying to put more

is coming up at 5:30 p.m. extra police were on hand today and all was calm at a elementary school where a girl was attacked with a hammer apparently over a family argument. the 9-year-old was attacked friday at the school in west oakland. she is expected to recover. police arrested the woman who lured the girl into bath room and beat her with a hammer. the school district says counselors and extra -- counselors and extra police were on campus today. >> we want to take every major possible to give people a level of comfort. >> officials say she is a volunteer at the school. she charged with assault. apple laid out its plan for the future today. apple unveiled their new desktop and mobile operating

hurricanes careena and sandy -- katrina and sandy were the two deadliest in recent years but it appears people are more afraid of hurricanes with masculine names. the test subjects said they would be more likely to evacuate. researchers say that people probably under estimate the power of hurricanes that sound more feminine. warning system that sends out an alert before an earthquake is making its ways to schools throughout california. students took part in a earthquake drill today. that skill one of two to use the quake guard technology developed by a company called seismic warning systems. it is designed to give them seconds to brace themselves before an earthquake.

breaking news now. a possible siting in san francisco of this wanted man. we have been telling you about the fbi trying to find ryan chamberlain after explosive materials were found in his apartment. moments ago the fbi told ktvu they have received a credible tip that ryan chamberlain was spotted in the past hour or so in san francisco. we are told he was seen at the mad dog in the fog. a bar in the lower heights. fbi are now looking looking for

smith & wesson sales jumped by a third. some industry experts say it is due to a growing increase in self-defense and fears of tighter gun restrictions. 19-year-old was killed after a truck he was in crashed on a freeway. the chp says the truck veered off i-80 and hit two trees before 3:30 a.m. this morning. the driver was delivering mattresses to a department store when he fell asleep. his passenger was thrown from the cab and died at the scene. the chp says he was not wearing a seatbelt. 60 to 80 gallons of fuel spilled as a result of the crash and a hazmat team was called in. a plan to bring more stores to the east bay but people fear the city will lose the small town feel. the one design feature that worried people in the area.

this footage of a bounce house carried off by strong winds is prompting concerns about the safety. two children were inside and they suffered minor injuries when it rolled 200 yards in colorado. the company said it was secured to the ground with stakes but a burst of wind loosens them from the ground. there was a similar incident in new york last month. they are investigating. the department of justice confirmed it busted two damaging cyber threatss. a joint team of -- threats. a joint team of agents disutinterrupted a scheme. -- disrupted a scheme. they are accused of stealing $100 million from vinyls and small businesses -- individuals

tont 2 investigates -- tonight 2 investigates how easy it is for criminals to get through locked doors at atms. they are supposed to keep you safe but ktvu's eric rasmussen is here with his investigation that revealed a big loophole that a lot of criminals already seem to know about. >> reporter: you can swipe anything to get inside. 2 investigates put it to the test and it came as a big surprise to customers. >> reporter: an atm robbery caught on surveillance video in seattle. cameras in san jose cammed a similar -- captured a similar crime. both happened at atms inside enclosures with locking doors. it is not clear if they used bank cards to get inside. 2 investigates found they didn't have to. we swiped an expired american express gift card and it
