cracked and broken parts on a bay area bridge. tonight, that's raising questions about similar parts on other bridges. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. another bay area bridge, another problem. this time, it's it's new carkena's bridge, the problem and how that problem might impact other bridges as well. >> reporter: frank, the problem is over on actually the other side on the vallejo side of the newer span of the bridge, and caltrains basely announced today they found cracked and

broken parts in the seismic joint. caltran says an inspection on may 15 uncovered the problem on the newer part of the bridge. seismic joints absorbed movement, and had been under scrutiny, when crews first noticed a clanking sound on the northern joint from an offcenter pin. they discovered parts of the northern joint were cracked, and off center. one of the joint's 90 pivot pins is damaged, and has slipped off its bearing. also a plastic stirrup is cracked. crews installed temporary wood pieces to stabilize the joint. a spokesman says there is no safety risk for drivers. two other bay area bridges have similar problems. >> there is a similar design on

the martinez bridge. >> reporter: those bridges have shown no problems, but they will be monitored closely. caltran hopes the repairs will be done soon, and they will be done right. >> they had one of the other roads blocked off. >> i just hope they do it properly. you know, it gets kind of frustrating when you hear that tax dollars are going to pay for a repair, or an upgrade. >> get going, and get it fixed, so we can keep coming. >> reporter: i ask caltrains how much the repairs will cost. they said they are still calculating that, but they do hope to begin work on the repairs in the coming months. jana katsuyama, ktvu, channel 2 news. we now know what it will cost to fix part of the bay bridge. during an oversight committee meeting, it will take $1.5 million to repair a series of

anchor rods. those rods anchor the suspension cable, and are sitting in openings that are too small. >> we're going to try to pick every rod up, move it over, a couple at a time. if we need more space, we will cut it with a cutter. >> with that done, the bridge should stand for 150 years. developing news from southern california, where a military jet has crashed into a neighborhood. amateur video shows the jet on fire minutes after it crashed in the city of imperial. it's about 150 miles east of san diego, just 12 miles from the mexican border. no one was hurt, and the pilot ejected safely. the jet involved was an av8b hairier from the third marine aircraft wing based out of yuma, arizona. no word yet on what caused the jet to crash.

this is what an av8b hairier looks like. it was used extensively in the iraq war and the war in afghanistan. this is the second crash of a hairier jet. another jet crashed in the remote desert of arizona after the pilot ejected. now election 2014, and the race for governor, in which jerry brown coasted to an easy primary victory. he took 54% of the vote, more than doubling the total of the two republicans vying for second place. it's kashkari who placed second. >> he said today he will focus on jobs and the middle class, and is asking voters who have left the republican party in droves in recent years to return, to give the party in

california another chance this november. >> reporter: governor brown was essentially celebrating before the polls even closed. with 54% of the vote, for good reason. he won every single county in california, but one. modot county. it was a primary blowout. >> i think a lot of people probably didn't vote. they were familiar with him. >> there was no competition. so it's sort of like an easy win for him in that way. >> reporter: this man, republic neil kashkari said this morning, that the governor is vulnerable. >> today, california is number 1 in poverty. jerry brown calls this a comeback. >> reporter: usf political science reporter, says kashkari's win is good for the gop. >> i think it's a significant outcome that they nominated a relatively younger candidate.

in yesterday's primary election. as it stands right now, just 18% of registered voters in the state cast ballots. once all the provisional, and mail in ballots are counted, it could reach 23%. there are still hundreds of uncounted, or late or provisional ballots. new at 10:00, oakland city council woman rebecca caplan says she is running for mayor. she says she can expressway the sort of leadership that oakland needs. she finished third behind jean quan. this time, she joins a field of at least a dozen candidates. all trying to unseat jean quan. colin kaepernick is now a very wealthy young man. the niners announced they have signed kaepernick to a six year contract extension that could

will also make peace with the nba and drop a $1 billion lawsuit he filed last week. new details on exactly how many runs muni has missed since the operator sickout. on monday, 718 missed runs. tuesday, that number was down to 519. today, 266. that means in the past three days, nearly 1500 runs have not been made. today, the city attorney filed legal charges, accusing the union of supporting an illegal work stoppage. today, the president of the worker's union denied that, having anything to do with the sickout. >> we empathize. we empathize with the public. but at the same time, the residents, and the writers have to know we're human too. and we're taking care of our families as well. >> the union says that contract that was rejected

overwhelmingly by members is unfair. union leaders say the 11% raise is misleading, when you take into account the hike in pension contributions that the city is asking for. the muni contract negotiations don't matter much to all of those folks who just need to get to work. >> many commuters were forced to find alternate means of transportation this week. cara lou joins us live in san francisco to explain how it provided a boost in business for some local companies. >> reporter: rideshare companies definitely saw a boost in business. one driver told us he was busier this past monday than even a typical weekend. a lot of commuters frustrated with the long delays and crowded buses during the muni sickout, chose to use rideshare companies instead. >> i can't spend two hours a day on a commute to work. >> reporter: after waiting an in our and a half on monday, he switched to side car. >> $12 vs.

oakland raiders and the nfl. like other similar lawsuits, these cheerleaders are asking for minimum wage and overtime pay, but their suit also has complaints about the way they were treated on the job. the suit claims cheerleaders at the charity events often received inpromote comments and groping from often inebriated attendees. >> i've been around all of these adult males who have been drinking alcohol all day. >> reporter: the suit also claims monthly weigh ins, cheerleaders were often chastised, even insulted for weight gain. >> i've seen girls emotionally shut down. >> reporter: the attorney says what makes the suit different

is that it names both the raiders and the nfl. >> they're in essence, what we call a joint employer. they're liable for the violations of the labor code in california. >> reporter: a spokesman from the raiders had no comment on the suit. but a representative from the nfl did get back to us. he said the nfl is not involved in the operations of any cheerleading group. in alameda, allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. new information now in the case of a former political consultant who was arrested on explosive charges this week. ktvu has learned that along with materials to make explosives, the fbi recovered a weapon. possibly a .22 rifle from ryan chamberlain. sources say the serial number had been filed off. also, a judge ordered a mental health examine for chamberlain.

prosecutors are charging chamberlain with a single count of possession of a destructive device. the fbi is testing materials found in his apartment at a lab in virginia. the results are expected later in the week. a video surfaced showing a confrontation with a student in a wheelchair. we showed you new video last night of two security officers in an altercation with the student. rochell miller was suspended. cotton laughs at people on her facebook page at people who are without jobs. the school district spokesman says her position with the district is uncertain. a bike rider pleading in to felony assault charges and an apparent road rage incident. jeffrey smock is seen here in a promotional video made while he was the ceo of a tech company

in atlanta. he is accused of pulling a 55- year-old truck driver out of his truck, and then beating him up. it happened in april at the intersection of east blithesdale and camino valley. the preliminary hearing is set for august 27. it is related to the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. in a regulatory filing, pg and e said several prosecutors would file what's called a superseding indictment. that would allow charges to be added, or altered. we'll learn more about the specifics next month, when prosecutors are expected to take action. the family of a 16-year-old girl who ran away from a group home in placerville, says that she suffers from depression, and anorexia. amy richards left a known for her roommate, saying she planned to head south, possibly

yanira garcia. rob roth tells us, the department had no choice but to open fire. >> reporter: the family of 18- year-old yanira garcia is grief- stricken. >> i don't know why an officer would come and do that. >> reporter: this afternoon, a minister consoled the family. medics say they made a 911 call, because yanira garcia, a teenager who suffered from depression hadn't been taking her medication. within 20 seconds of the deputy arriving, there was a gunshot. >> this individual, wielding a knife came at him, and he did fire his weapon as he had to in that moment to protect himself. >> reporter: the deputy is identified as man true.

relatives question whether lethal force was necessary. >> they could have tasered. could have at least done something better. >> it's a valid question. the thing is, as i said, there's going to be exhaustive investigation. as there should be. this is a very serious incident, and questions like that are going to be addressed. >> reporter: the deputy has been placed on administrative leave with pay. that's customary in shootings. in half moon bay, rob roth, ktvu, channel 2 news. an oakland man has been sentenced to four years in prison for selling a stolen artifact from the gold rush era. a gold jewelry box from the 19th century was taken from the oakland museum of california, and recovered two months later. the 46-year-old pleaded guilty to charges three months ago, but learned his fate yesterday. prosecutors say he admitted to selling the stolen artifact to another person. she lost her phone to a burglar. tonight, at 10:45, one woman's quick action with the help of

azinth smith. some workers are speaking out about working conditions. in union city today, a group of wal-mart employees and their supporters rail idea to call attention to their concerns. they said they want better pay, affordable health insurance, more predictable work hours, and also an end to what they call retaliation for speaking out. a wal-mart spokeswoman called the demonstrations a quote publicity stunt. back now to election 2014 in a race for san jose mayor. supervisor dave cortezy came away with 43% of the vote. the next highest councilmember was sam liccardo with 25% of the vote. >> it's been a toxic combative atmosphere here, and that will change under my leadership. >> i think overwhelmingly, the people of this city want leadership. that want to ensure we have a

sustainable future. >> he says they can't leave the city's children to pay the bills. to do that, he wants to cut the spending. new numbers solidify the need for runoff in the race for state school superintendent. tom torlakson received 47% of the vote. he faces marshall tuck. the race for secretary of state has alex padilla facing pete peterson. about 12,000 votes separate them. suspended state senator, leeland yee came in third with just under 10%. it was too late to take his name off the ballot. yee still received more than 289,000 votes. there is new video tonight of sergeant bowe bergdahl's release from afghan militants.

it is taliban video that was posted online. it shows the moment bergdahl goes from being a prisoner to a free man. >> reporter: these are the most recent pictures we have of u.s. sergeant bowe bergdahl, and his release to american special forces on saturday. in the video, you see bergdahl dressed in white, as he's surrounded by taliban fighters chanting praise for their leader. later, two members of the taliban, one carrying a white flag, lead bergdahl halfway to the american helicopter. here in the u.s., questions are still swirling about the circumstances of bergdahl's time in afghanistan that led to five years of captivity under the taliban. bergdahl's former squad leader says bergdahl is a desserter. >> knowing that one of my

a possible new clue in the search for malaysian airlines 370. today, searchers released information from microphones that may have recorded the crash. that booming sound you heard there was picked up by underwater microphones designed to listen for underwater nuclear explosions. it happened about the same time the airliner may have hit the water. researchers say there is no definitive evidence though, linking sound to the aircraft, and scientists say the general location doesn't match other information about the missing flight. a british woman sailing with her husband in the indian ocean has filed a report with australian airlines, she said she saw a burning plane.

at the time, she thought she was hallucinating. she thinks she may have seen that missing plane. the first raise could come as soon as the summer. raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour. by 2018, it would be $13 an hour. but the ordinance includes several controversial measures based on the size of a business, and whether the employer gets most of its business from outside the city of richmond. the council is expected to take a final vote on the matter next month. muy pueblo has announced it is naming a new ceo. it has 3200 employees. last year, the company was targeted by protesters who claimed the chain fired employees who didn't have green cards. it says it has received $56

a san ramon woman used an iphone app to track her stolen phone, but was surprised what she saw. >> the suspected thief was headed right to her home and she took action. >> reporter: the woman used a find my iphone app to track the thief, and helped police make an arrest. 34-year-old dustin fryberger with addresses in martina and oakley is suspected of stealing a woman's purse, and using the personal information and the contents to try to break into her home. it all started at the parking lot near a walking trail in crockett. the woman left her purse in her vehicle, as her family went for a hike. she found her purse had been stolen. her teenage son used the find my iphone app to track the cell phone. she learned the thief had gone to a gas stationk and was headed to the direction of her home in san ramon. she called police, her parents, and her neighbor. >> she's asking me, if i can

oh, i wish i could do more. it's just a bunch of old, out-of-date clothes. oh, i'm sure it's great. three weeks ago, our neighbors, the rands, lost their house and everything they own in a fire. fortunately, nobody was hurt. and fortunately, they're friends with wonder woman over here. i'm hardly wonder woman. she mobilized the community to donate clothes, furniture, appliances, all to help them start over in their new rental. which you found them. i'm no wonder woman. rand-aid was her idea. it wasn't my idea to call it "rand-aid." okay, fine. i'm wonder woman. - terrible tragedy. - they're our closest friends. - we know them. - uh, manny and their son reuben are tight. in fact, i put in one of their closets. not that it matters, but it was the only structure to survive the fire.
