contra costa county where firefighters are trying to put out a wildfire. you can see smoke burning in the distance there. this fire broke out overnight and coming up in a minute, our reporter will have more on the big challenge when firefighters tried to bring it all under control. >> i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach, let's get to you rosemary. we have the warm up. tomorrow is the hottest day of the weekend. we'll give you a live look out in the estuary. san francisco is in the backdrop. along the coast and around the bay, there's patchy fog and it's thick in nature. the high pressure is pinning it closer to the ground. here's a look tell footprint here. we'll see a nice burnout. we'll remain partly to mostly cloudy today.

the wind is gusting at 20 miles per hour. it's a lot like yesterday. the onshore breeze we will not get rid of completely. it will start pulling back. we have warmer air in the afternoon and that will lead to our warmup for today. 57 in antioch, 56 in oakland, 52 half moon bay, north bay, it's slightly cooler here. 52 in napa, 46 degrees for some starting in nevada. it's going into the 90s, we're talking 94 in livermore, 90 for morgan hill. you get along the bay and it's comfortable and the coast it's cool. 56 in pacifica and we've got widespread 70s along the bay. i'll show you how long this trend will last coming up. we are following developing news out of the pittsburg bay point area where a wildfire has

burned 100 acres. they had to do back burning to contain the flames. christian? >> reporter: let's give you a live look at the fire. you can see it off in the distance. we saw smoke and flames, this fire is 100% contained. but, at this point the strategy to surround it and let it burn itself out. fire crews are on the scene and they're keeping an eye on it. we have video from overnight showing how big the flames got out here. we're hearing from witnesses, the flames were 30, 40 feet in the air. at this point there's no word of any structures that were damaged and no reports of any injuries, we did talk to workers at a at fault factory who watched the fire break out. it broke out before 2:00 this morning and they watched it. it eventually burned 100 acres. >> i looked to be my right and woah, it's a big flail of fire and it kept spreading throughout the night. we have to keep an eye on the

rail car. we watched it spread from one side of the road and it kept going and going. >> reporter: crews are telling us they had this fire contained about 5:00 this morning. with the dry conditions that are prevalent throughout the bay area, of course, they want to keep an eye on it. you can see there's a fire truck here from our live picture. to give you a sense of how much this fire burned in contra costa you can see that this entire area has been completely blackened from this morning's fire, so clearly, 100 acres here burned, we're hearing this fire now 100% contained t fire crews here from contra costa county fire protection are still on scene keeping an eye on it. we'll stay here and keep an eye on it as well. christian captain ktvu, channel 2 news. >> a attentive dog may have saved a life in union city. a neighbor woke up because his

dog kept barking. he called 9 # 1 after noticing films racing through a nearby house. one person living inside the home was alerted and did escape safely. it took firefighters 20 minutes to get the fire out under control -- under control. this fire in san leandro started after 10:30 on san leandro boulevard. bart service was temporarily stopped between the oakland museum and bart stations. it took 20 minutes to put that fire out. the cause of that fire is still being investigated. california chrome hopes to make history this morning. he's the overwhelming favorite to win the belmont stakes and in the process capture the elusive triple crown. the last one was a firm back in

belmont watch party today. the gates will open at 9:00 this morning. beer, hot dogs and bubbled water will cost $1 today. they'll host a california chrome wine festival. it will be post time for the belmont stakes, 3:52 pacific time. it will be simulcast. the drug cartel was operating inside a home in the south bay. agents from homeland security and the dea raided a home yesterday morning. two adults and children were detained in the information. they found unrefined methamphetamine worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. the compounds used in meth are volatile. >> it's converted into crystal methamphetamine, the large shards. that's the product that gets sold on the street.

methamphetamine conversion labs like this are consistently run by drug car tells. investigators say the drug is manufactured in mexico and smuggled across the border. dss has taken custody of the children in the home. they tried to buy poison, this person left the san francisco court without saying a word. they ordered a mental health exam. chamberlain was arrested after a wide scale manhunt. they discovered bomb making materials in his home. they accused him of buying biotoxins online. one was a substance similar to ricin. he told one seller that he wanted to ease the suffering of cancer patients. they say good-bye to a

teenager who was killed by a hit-and-run driver near the train tracks on her home. a funeral service is scheduled to take place this morning in union city. a fundraiser is being held for a bart officer who was shot and killed. he was mistakenly shot by a fellow officer in dublin back in january. today's fundraiser is a run at the elementary school in san ramon at 9:00 a.m. people in one san jose neighborhood are hoping to catch the thieves who are targeting their neighborhoods. two women were caught on video taking stuff approximately mailboxes. they took packages from the neighborhoods. 100 mailboxes in the area have been burglarized in the past two weeks. >> i'll have to change my atm

and account numbers now. >> let's get ahold of them and see what happened. you know a lot of people are suffering from this. one neighbor says the man in the surveillance video appears to be the same man who broke into the mailboxes on wednesday. one person was injured after a senior prank that included jamming building locks and throwing water balloons in the cafeteria. students ditched their fifth grade classes to storm the pool complex next year. pictures and video of the day were posted on twitter. he sent a note home to parents, asking them to talk to students about the importance of being respectful. window we know a man known by the name hidden cash. he hid envelopes last month. we know him as jason boozey. he's made a lot of money and he wanted to do something with it.

still on seen here, let's give a live look now, you can see this area here. you've seen the scene changed from open flames to black smoke, crews are getting the upper hand on this fire. but, clearly crews still on the scene keeping an eye on it. we had video shot overnight. the area that we're in is an uninhabited area. a lot of grass trees brush and actually, the flames were 20, 30, 40 feet in the air. certainly a spectacular looking fire. no structures in danger, no people harmed from what we understand. those are two definite good notes in terms of this fire. crews say they managed to get the upper hand on this fire. they contained the fire at 5:00 this morning. dry conditions here throughout the bay area. fires are a major concern. >> we have a real dry winter,

the grass is ready to go this year. we're expecting a bad fire season. one of the concerns we have we're expecting it to be a hot day today. the smoke, it could create a lot of health issues for people down wind in pittsburg and antioch. >> you might be able to hear and see the rain behind me. no indication of whether that contributed to the fire. it's a possibility of how the fire started. this he don't know how it did start. this is a active train route throughout the area. there's a homeless encampment in the area. those are two possible sources of admission. as to how they'll be putting out this fire later on today, there will be a helicopter flying out over the area a little later this morning dropping water and putting this fire out once in awhile. they do not want to have the threat of a wildfire looming in

san jose area, for the second half of the the day, temperatures are going to be warming as i showed you into the 80s, if by lunchtime, we're looking at 70s, be prepared for that again, if you don't like the heat, maybe even head towards the coast. 85 degrees expected this afternoon. we have 70s closer to the water, sausalito and richmond. we have low 80s in castro valley. if you like the heat, pleasanton, danville, a nice day for shopping, 92 degrees, maybe a outdoor patio for lunch. santa cruz is going to be beautiful in your neighborhood, mid-70s expected this afternoon. 81 for sunnyvale, palo alto, we'll go to 81, 73 san francisco and again partly cloudy and 60s along the coast.

extended forecast, coming up. well, happening today, history in the making. california chrome is on the verge of winning horse racing's most elusive title, the triple crown. the champion horse with bay area ties is the overwhelming favorite to win the belmont stakes in upstate new york and in the process, complete horse racing's holy trinity. the last race to win the triple crown was affirmed in 1978. with a victory today, california chrome would be the first horse from california to win the triple crown. >> it's really an honor to be here with this horse. he's a wonderful gift from the heavens, and i honestly believe we're going to win the triple crown. >> chrome's jockey, victor espinosa started at the now- defunct baymeadows racetrack in san mateo, while 77-year-old art sherman worked both at baymeadows and golden gate fields. today's race will certainly challenge california chrome. the belmont is a mile and a

tracks in san leandro last night. bart service had to be temporarily stopped between the oakland coliseum and bay fair bart stations. it took about 20 minutes to get the fire out. then bart service was restored a short time later. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. federal investigators say sophisticated drug lab with possible ties to a mexican drug cartel was operating inside a home in the south bay. agents from the dea and homeland security raided a house on 20th street in san jose yesterday morning. two adults and two children were detained in the operation. authorities say they found unrefined methamphetamine worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. a hazmat team was called in because the compounds used in meth are volatile. >> it's converted into crystal methamphetamine, into these large crystal shards. that is the product that gets ultimately sold on the street. meth labs like this are consistently run by drug

cartels. >> investigators say the drug is manufactured in mexico and then smuggled across the border. family services have taken custody of the two children found in the home. federal investigators say a man accused of trying to build a bomb was also trying to buy poison. relatives of the suspect ryan chamberlin, left san francisco federal court yesterday without saying a word. a judge granted a defense request and ordered a mental health exam. chamberlin was arrested on monday after a wide scale manhunt. feds say they recovered bomb- making materials inside his russian hill home. court documents accuse him of buying biotoxins online. one was a substance similar to ricin. investigators say he told one seller he wanted to use the poison to ease the suffering of cancer patients. today, hundreds of people are expected to say their final good-byes to a teenager who was hit and killed by a train in san leandro last month. brittany silva was killed while walking across the train tracks right next to her home. police say she was wearing ear

your weekend. i'll have a look at those numbers and just how long this is going to last, coming up. happening today, the race for the elusive triple crown. california chrome hopes to win the belmont stakes in upstate new york and in the process, become the first to capture horse racing's triple crown in 36 years. ktvu's christien kafton is live at golden gate field. >> reporter: just a matter of hours, california chrome will take the track at belmont park, trying to be the first triple crown winner in 36 years since affirmed. california chrome is as close as we have to a hometown hero racing today. we're joined by bill dehlia, trainer here at golden gate fields, who actually rode with california chrome's trainer. if you could give us a little insight as a trainer, what it takes to get a horse prepped for this level of racing w. >> it's a huge ordeal to try to get a horse ready for a triple crown race, let alone the kentucky derby and the preakness, but it's definitely

a big chore and you just have to be very patient and not overdo it, which i think art is doing. he's been around a long time, sew's from the old school and he does it the way he's going to do it. some guys will work horses faster, longer, harder, but he's trying to keep all the energy in the horse. >> reporter: and you also know victor espinosa, the jockey riding california chrome today. he seems to have a real winning streak going. six races, six wins. >> yeah, victor rode up here for quite a few years, has an apprenticeship here and he was a very good rider while he was here. he just went on to bigger and better things and he's very experienced in what he's doing and he knows this horse like the back of his hand. >> reporter: and phil, we talked off camera a couple minutes ago. you said that california chrome

does face a challenge out there today in the belmont stakes. this is a different race than he has raced in kentucky and in the preakness. >> yes, he's, his breeding is not for a mile and a half, so it's going to be a challenge for him. the thing is, he's a race horse and he's what they call sometimes a freak. he can really run, so it might get him through it. doesn't matter that he's -- well, it does matter about the breeding, but it might not matter in this instance. >> reporter: bill dehlia, thank you for the insight. i think everybody's going to be rooting for california chrome today. obviously, a huge race starting at noon at golden gate fields. wine party and watch party. they have 2000 tvs, plenty of places to watch that big race. everybody's going to be watching the belmont stakes. post time today is 3:35 pacific

athletes. now, they are hoping to come up with their own winning combination by finding the right match for their fiery chestnut stallion. smiling tiger is one of the nation's leading sprinters before retiring from racing last year. now, he's one of premier thoroughbred's leading stallions. >> we bred close to a hundred mares to smiling tiger, another 30 or so to the other stallions. big numbers, especially for a northern california breeding facility. >> reporter: in addition to breeding thoroughbred race horses, this facility also serves as a rehab center, where injured horses come to get nursed back to health, in hopes they can return to competition. a recovery pool and aqua treadmills help provide therapeutic healing, conditioning and strengthening for injured horses. and the program is showing success. >> had to scratch him because of the foot bruise. >> reporter: having just

rehabilitated social inclusion, a speedy threat to california chrome in the preakness a few weeks ago. >> it's a toss-up. you want to see your horses, your clients always do good. but we also want to see history with california chrome. >> california chrome did it! >> reporter: julie haener, ktvu channel 2news. an early morning fire burned a hundred acres in the pittsburg and bay point area. it started about 12:30 this morning and took firefighters nearly five hours to contain the flames. contra costa firefighters say they had to do some back burning to help them gain control of that fire. no houses were burned. no one was hurt. an investigation is now under way to find the cause. cal trans is scrambling to cut back dry brush that lined bay area freeways. because of the drought, fire danger is extremely high this year. just in the past week, at least two fires broke out on the side of freeways, one in san jose, another along the interchange near vallejo. the cost of cutting back the brush along the highways is not cheap. it cost cal trans $4.4 million a year to maintain 4000 acres

of property. >> you can't obviously have every bit of acreage maintained 100% all the time. it takes a while. do you have to prioritize. >> cal trans says the tri valley area is a high priority because it can get so hot there. for the 90 maintenance workers who cut back the brush, the job is never done. everything they cut this year will grow back next year. study sessions are resuming this weekend at seattle pacific university, where one student was killed and two others wounded in a shooting on thursday. mourners have been gathering at the entrance of the school, praying for the victims and leaving them flowers. the school canceled classes yesterday, but is opening the library today in preparation for next week's final exams. doctors say it will take a long time for survivors to recover physically and emotionally. >> all these patients and the families are going through a lot of mental anguish and trauma. >> we need to engage in a rational conversation about the number of guns that are out there in the wrong hands.

>> the suspect, 26-year-old aaron ybarra is on suicide watch. his attorneys say he is remorseful and suffers from mental issues. relatives say he's obsessed with the 1999 columbine high school shooting in colorado. these mass school shootings have prompted one east bay district to consider bringing back armed security guards. the mount dale unified school district laid off five officers in 2012 due to the cost. now, the city of concord and education leaders are hoping to hire three armed officers at high schools throughout concord. >> now that we see this violence across the nation on our school campuses, we can't afford to keep our police officers off our campuses. >> the violence in schools, it's frightening. as a former teacher, that was something i was dealing with for several years. >> the city and school district are finalizing their budgets and hope to split the half million dollar security cost. the armed officers would then return at the start of the next

school year. despite the efforts of environmentalists, great white sharks will not be getting more protection of a the marin county coast. the california fish and wildlife commission voted to not list the northeast pacific population of great whites as threatened or endangered. sausalito group had asked for more protection based on studies showing the number of great whites are declining. but the commission says there is other data that suggests otherwise. muni service is running normally this morning. however, a meeting aimed at resolving a contract dispute has been called off. muni says the union representing transit workers declined to meet today with an arbitrator. some muni operators took part in a three-day sick-out this week, after overwhelming voting against -- overwhelmingly voting against media proposal. workers are banned from striking. according to charter, disputes should be resolved by an arbitrator. walnut creek could be adding another apartment complex. the landing would be four stories tall and house 178

. that's rid wood high school in larkspur. they posted this video on youtube on june 2 and it already has more than 31,000 views. the school reports the purpose of the post is to showcase its school spirit, extracurricular activities and everything else that makes redwood high what it is. just about everyone of the school's 1600 students took part in the video. two bay area high schoolers are gearing up for a national auto competition. two seniors attend alhambra high school. last month, they won the state auto shop title. tuesday, they will compete in the national ford triple a student auto skills student competition in dearborn, michigan. their teacher says he couldn't be browder. >> they are among the best in the country, which is astounding. it's really fun to have been able to train them and work with them and get them to this point. >> both of the teens say they benefit from their current part-

time jobs as technicians at walnut creek honda and concord bmw. they both say they see themselves working on cars as their future careers. tonight, a teenager from minnesota will sleep inside for the first time in a year. rudy hummel says he decided to camp out near his house as a personal challenge. then he decided he could make it a fun raiser for habitat for humanity. he says there are a lot of people who don't have a home to sleep in and he wanted to do something to help. so he asked people to pledge money for each night he spent outside. when he first started, he had a less ambitious goal, but after the first couple of nights, he decided to change his mind. >> this was too easy. i'll go for a whole year, which i knew i could do, because i had done winter camping in scouts. >> he slept outside in the coldest winter in 139 years, but he said the worst part wasn't the cold. it was the mice that invaded

heat. mid-90s on monday. we trend down as early as monday, but the bigger cooloff comes tuesday and wednesday. back to the desk. law enforcement agencies in the east bay are teaming up to crack down on mob attacks involving large groups of teenagers. police call the attacks wildings. they say groups of as many as 150 teenagers have been chasing people at bart stations and then robbing them of their cell phones and shoes. the teens then hop on bart to get away. some of the victims have been beaten, pepper sprayed or hit with guns. the latest attack happened last weekend at the bay fair bart station. police think the teens are using social media to organize. smart cars have once again become the target of vandals in san francisco. two of the small cars were tipped over thursday night. this was in the twin peaks neighborhood. the owner of one told us police knocked on his door at 5:00 yesterday morning to tell him about his car. he said he always liked the small car, but might not keep it now. >> the reason why i have this

. wisconsin has joined a growing number of states to overturn a ban on gay marriage. yesterday, a federal judge ruled the state's ban is unconstitutional, but the judge did not say if the ruling could take effect right away. wisconsin's attorney general filed an emergency order to

stop clerks from issuing marriage licenses, saying the ruling caused confusion. clerks in some counties had already started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples soon after the ruling. apple will soon be making a move to put its stock more within reach. on monday, it will do a stock split, issuing more shares to its existing investors to bring down the price of its stock. the price of one share of apple is set to go down from about $647 to $93. stock splitting is a way of bringing more individual investors to the table. the fbi is teaming up with san francisco police to investigate what they say is disturbing graffiti found outside two synagogues. the graffiti was found on a sign on brotherhood way that's shared by two congregations. the sign has been since restored, but jay weekly online ran a photo of the vandalism before the cleanup. neither from either temple would go on camera, but

officials say this has never happened before at their synagogues. a neurosurgeon took the stand in the bryan stow civil case and told jurors the giants fan will need 24-hour assistance for the rest of his life as a result of his beating outside dodgers stadium in 2011. according to the l.a. times, the surgeon recommended stow have the same round-the- clock care he had at a facility in bakersfield. last year, stow was moved out of that facility and back to his home in santa cruz because the care was no longer covered by insurance. stow is suing the dodgers and former team owner frank mccourt, alleging inadequate security at the stadium. the san francisco 49ers are praising a military veteran who is walking across america to honor fallen service members. >> lot of inspiration was gained for that and just the respect that we have as an organization, as a team for our military. >> head coach jim harbaugh welcomed former u.s. army captain mike vete to the santa
