dry brush and soaring temperatures, it's a dangerous combination. tonight, firefighters across the bay area are on alert. >> it's only going to get worse from here. good evening, everyone. thank you for joining us for this special post game edition of ktvu channel it news. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. we saw an example of what conditions can do just this morning when a grass fire burned about 40 acres on solano avenue in bay point. no one was hurt. no homes were destroyed, but firefighters were on the scene for much of the day, keeping an eye out for hot spots. ktvu's mark tamayo has been tracking the fire danger across the area. he joins us from the weather center with a look at how it's shaping up right now. >> the key headline, we're talking about a big warmup in the bay area in the second half of the weekend. temperatures from today, a few spots were cool, a few spots warming into the lower 90s, livermore and concord for highs this afternoon. san jose topped out at 79. cool spot, 59 in pacifica.

we still have an onshore breeze, still have fog right in the immediate coastline. live camera showing the fog, eventually thinning out for tomorrow and temperatures come up a good 8 to 15 degrees from today's highs. today with the fire danger, we're on the moderate to high side. tomorrow, with developing north- northeasterly winds, fire danger will be going up. we are talking about triple- digit heat across parts of the region. fire danger going up across the entire region, especially for the north bay, out toward the east bay, even the santa cruz mountains. take a look at the hot numbers for your sunday afternoon. livermore, 100 degrees. oakland, 84. more thaibdz, san jose, lower 90s. a big warmup for tomorrow. santa clara checks in at 90. san francisco, look at that, really warm in the city as well, topping out at 80 degrees. a look ahead at your five-day forecast, another warm to hot day, fire danger on monday, gradually cooling things off tuesday into wednesday. >> thank you, mark. those dangerous conditions have firefighters and homeowners preparing for the

worst. team coverage continues with christina rendon. she spoke to firefighters who say this fire season is off to a rough start. >> you can see it's already really dry. >> reporter: the golden hills and the east bay are thirsty for water, but hot temperatures are scorching them instead, sparking a high fire danger. >> it's on all of our minds. >> reporter: marsha welch lives in lafayette, all too familiar with the wind, heat and parched land. >> it is like a perfect storm. >> reporter: earlier this morning, a 40-acre wildfire lit up the sky in bay point. it took five hours for firefighters to get a handle on the flames. fires like this add to a bigger concern. >> statewide, we've had double to triple the number of fires that we normally have at this point in the year. so it's only going to get worse from here. >> reporter: the fire season started unusually early this year. here's an indication of how the drought has affected brush. this should be a little more greener. instead, it is yellow and extremely dry. >> that's how we know it's going to be a bad fire season.

>> reporter: he says people can help by clearing weeds around their homes, something welch has already done, as she waits out the hot summer months during this record-setting drought. >> for us who own homes, it's frightening, because of the high fire and also because we can't -- we're going to lose our lawns if this continues. >> reporter: in contra costa county, christina rendon, ktvu channel 2news. >> you can get the ktvu weather app for the latest on conditions across the bay area. it's available for download on apple and android, smartphones and tablets. people in heyward were told to shelter in place for about an hour this afternoon because of smoke coming from a fire at a scrap yard. the fire at simms metal management started at about 1:40 this afternoon. you could see the thick, black smoke coming from that facility that handles scrap metal. people in the path of the smoke were asked to stay in their homes. the company says the fire

ignited in a pile of metal was out in about 20 minutes. >> it's tin. it's metal. so i'm not sure what was in the smoke at this point in time. that will be up to the epa. >> the same facility was hit by arson back in 2009. simms says there are surveillance cameras there on site, but they haven't yet reviewed the footage. coming up tonight at 10:00, we'll have a live report with details of some of the past incidents at simms facilities in the bay area. he was chasing history, but california chrome has fallen short. >> it won't be a triple crown this year! it's going to be close! it's going to be very close! tonalist got there! tonalist has won the belmont stakes! >> the 3-year-old colt with bay area ties came in fifth place at today's belmont stakes in new york, ending the chance of being the first horse in 36 years to win that elusive triple crown. california chrome's owner steve coburn, obviously disappointed by the outcome, said the other horses had an unfair advantage

because they didn't run in the kentucky derby or preakness races. >> you know what? he's been in three -- this is his third very big race. i'm 61 years old. i'll never see in my lifetime, i'll never see another triple crown winner because of the way they do this. it's not fair to these horses that have been in the game since day one. >> the winning horse, tonalist, did not run in either of the two previous races. here in the bay area, where california chrome is trained, people gathered in hopes of watching the horse make history. >> ktvu's john sasaki was at berkeley's golden gate fields where the excitement quickly turned to disappointment right in the blink of an eye. ♪ >> reporter: the sounds of horse racing echoed around golden gate fields today. and the crowd cheered the races here. but it was nothing like the main event live from new york, as california chrome went for the triple crown. [ cheers & applause ] >> i'm a california boy! i want a california horse to win! >> reporter: the horse's ties to the bay area and golden gate fields are strong, starting with his trainer, art sherman. >> he has a home in san mateo. he was a jockey and trainer here for 40 years. his son trains here, has about 50 horses. >> reporter: the hometown favorite had plenty of people placing their wagers, albeit few were big bets. >> $4. >> reporter: the excitement reached a crescendo as the horses came down the final stretch, but california chrome didn't have enough left in the tank. >> i'm heartbroken. i love the horse. i love the whole team. i wanted to see a movie out of this whole story. >> i think it's a waste of

hospitalized. three, including morgan, are in critical condition. a san francisco jail inmate is on the loose tonight. deputies say he escaped while taking out the trash at the haul of justice this morning. the san francisco sheriff's department says a deputy ran after 40-year-old timothy midget, but couldn't catch him. midget was cleared to work outside the jail with supervision. he is 6' 3 tall, weighs 165 points. midget was set to be released in just six weeks after serving time for drug possession. fremont police are asking people to take a look at some surveillance video from a recent burglary in hopes of catching the intruder. you can see the man taking a look at a security camera at the home on wednesday. then he gets a piece of lumber, as you see, and moves the camera's position. after that, police say he broke into the home by kicking in the garage door, but an alarm went off and the man ran away. the city of san bruno is calling a decision by state regulators to end an investigation into missing pg&e

missing records shocking and sudden. they will help determine how much the utility should pay in fines for the san bruno pipeline explosion and fire back in 2010. eight people were killed, 66 others hurt, and 38 homes were destroyed. the chronicle reports the cpuc said its case is already strong and that continued search for the data would only delay proceedings. san bruno mayor said, quote, the question -- we question the cpuc's sudden decision this week and are concerned it may be the result of inappropriate pressure applied by pg&e at the expense, once again, of public safety. there is word tonight shelly sterling may still have ties to the los angeles clippers if it is sold to steve ballmer. unnamed sources say the $2 billion deal allows as much as $200 million to be set up a charity run by shelly sterling and ballmer. sources say the foundation
