. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. bay area hillsides are already dry and temperatures are going to get even hotter tomorrow. had as fire crews race to battle fires in open fields and industrial neighborhoods. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello everyone i'm heather holmes. cool and foggy along the coast and warm and sunny closer to mount diablo. it's those inland areas that could see triple-digit heat tomorrow. >> the rising temperatures will of course increase fire dangers. >> our meteorologist mark tamme is in our weather center with a look at how hot it's expected to get. >> we started to warm up a little today, but you will

notice the big temperature jump going over 10 freezing in a few spots. as far as this afternoon, we had the big temperature range from the upper 50s in pacifica. lots of lower 90s towards concord, livermore and antioch. a big warm up on the order of- 15 degrees from today's highs. this one contour, in fact we'll trace this out. this is triple-digit territory and warmest parts of the bay area will be approaching 100 degrees and, in fact, a few spots could be over 100 degrees as we head into sunday afternoon. with that fire danger will be on the increase, today we had fire danger in the moderate to high side, with developing north-northeasterly winds fire danger definitely goes and for tomorrow we talked about the warm-up and drying conditions in the atmosphere. humidity levels on 10 ps. >> we'll break down the areas that will approach triple-digit territory and how long the heat spell will last? the expected high temperatures and low joins led to a spare the air alert for

eight months. that in and of itself is unusual. add two unsolved arson cases to the mix and can you see why fire crews called the situation here suspicious. with a crane and claw, hayward fire crews picked through this giant pile. >> how did the fire start from a pile of appliances? >> reporter: the chief says it isn't easy for metal to catch fire and finding whatever was still smoldering in pile could help determine conditions and if the fire was deliberately set? >> it would be kind of hard unless somebody actually broke into the facility to start it. but that is not something had a we're going rule out yet. >> reporter: that is because it hayward site was a target before. back in may of 2009. >> we actually have videotape showing someone throwing something over the fence, but in this case, we have no idea what start ready. >> reporter: sims spokesman tells us in the last two months of 013, there were two fires at the sims metal management in redwood city. the second place in december

was determined to be arson. and like the hayward case of 2009, is still unsolved. >> it's kind of strange. i mean it's happened before, but you know, once we get to the bottom of the pile and see exactly what was on the bottom, or in the mix of the whole pile, then we'll know a little bit more. >> reporter: today's fire forced a shelter- in-place to keep people from breathing in air, while the fire burned for almost two hours. >> am i concerned there ways shelter-in-place and i didn't know about it? that is kind of strange for this neighborhood. kevin fitzgerald says fumes from burning metal doesn't bother him, but that the business has become a target there are cameras all over this property and the surveillance video could help determine the cause of today's fire and if there is any connection to some of the previousstets? live in hayward, patti leave, ktvu channel 2 news. as patti mentioned we have reported on a number of facilities at sims in the bay

area. in 2013 a pair of fires in redwood city just five weeks apart in laid out security and a fire broke out at the sims facility in san josi. year before there was the fire in hayward that was ruled arson. and in 2007 sims was fined $20,000 for another fire also in redwood city. california chrome lost some of his luster losing belmont stakes and dashing hopes of winning the 12th ever triple crown. >> it won't be a triple crown this year. it's going to be close. it's going to be very close and tonalist got there! tonalist has won the belmont stakes. >> as you saw there, the colt came in fifth after a race he host moy ran behind the winners. co-owner steve coburn said the other thrower breds had an

as california chrome went for the triple crown. >> it hasn't been done since 1978 and it's only been 11 times. it's very difficult to do. >> reporter: almost everyone at the track jammed inside to catch the belmont stakes on tv. lahar. >> reporter: and most people from horse racing afish aficionados to fans were cheering for californiachom. the horse's ties to the bay area and golden gate fields are strong start its trainer art herman. >> he has a home in san mateo and his son trains her. >> reporter: the hometown favorite had people placing bathesment the excitement reached a crescendo as the horses came down the final stretch, but california chrome didn't have enough left in the tank. >> my heart is broken. i loved the horse and i loved the whole team and i wanted to see them move out of this

at universal studios hollywood. emergency preparedness is being moved outside as hundreds of people pitched tents like they just might have to do of a an earthquake. we have all been warned it could be 72 hours or more before emergency-responders get to us after a big one. ktvu's debora villalon reports from mill valley where this drill is disguised as a campout. >> reporter: dozens of mill valley families traded their cozy beds for sleeping bags tonight. a sea of tents under mount tam, but a catch sought with a purpose. finding out radios aren't always toys and how to do cpr.

preparations. reporting live in myself valley tonight, debora villalon ktvu channel 2 news. something to think about. fremont police have released surveillance video from a recent attempted burglary in hopes of catch the intruder. want you to take a look now. the man is checking out that security camera at a home on amrock way and he get a piece of lumber and move the camera's position and police say he broke into the home by kicking in the garage door, but an alarm went off and the man seen there ran wow. a roman catholic priest in davis is expected to be arraigned on charges of statutory rate. the sacramento bee reports that prosecutors have released a criminal complaint alleging that the reverend hector coria gonzalez had sex with an nur aged girl. he was arrested last month and he is free on $50,000 bail, father gonzalez is set to be arraigned on tuesday. >> federal authorities are investigating a small plane crash in san luis obispo county that killed both men aboard.

single-engine piper cub took off from a private airport in templeton this morning. witnesses say after take-off the plane veered to the right and crashed into an open field. tonight the sheriff's office reports victims were 8-year-old robert berg and 66- year-old john warren, both of psa robles. >> the fbi says that bergdahl's parents have received threats. families of green soldiers remain angry over the search for bergdahl who some accuse of being a deserter. president obama will be looking for a new candidate to lead the troubled department of veteran administrations. the head of the cleveland clinic has withdrawn his name for consideration.

toby cosgrove announced today he wants to stay in his current position as ceo and president of the clarence. the department of veterans affairs is under fire for delayed appointments that led to the death of about a dozen patients and alleged cover-ups to hide those. the federal government is sending about a thousand undocumented immigrants from texas to arizona this weekend. unmarked buses arrived at the holding center in nogales today, but like the overwhelmed facility in texas, state officials say the center not ready for the wave of families believed to be women and children escaping violence in central america. the homeland security officials say 2,000 mattresses have been ordered with portlandable showers and medical supplies. arizona authorities say they have no warning. >> you are dumping people with no notice, no contact, no communication, i think that is wrong. i think they have to be a

they are thirty for waters, but hot temperatures are scorching them and sparking i high fire danger. marsha welsh lives in lafayette and all too familiar with the threat by the parched land. >> this weekend, it is like a perfect storm. >> reporter: early this morning a 440:00 ache wildfire lid up the night sky in bay point and took crews hours to get an handle on the flame. contra costa county fire marshal robert marshall says it is a bigger concern. >> we have double and trip the number of fires that we normally have, so it's only going to get worse from here. >> reporter: the fire season started unusually early and here is an indication of how the drought has effect affected the brush. this should be a little more greener and instead it's yellow and extremely you dry. he says people can help by clearing weeds around their homes, something that welch has done as she waits out the hot

summer months during this record-setting drought? >> for us who own home it's frightening because of high fire and we're go to lose our lawns, if this continues. >> reporter: in contra costa county, cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. fi crews say a neighbor's dog may have saved their lives in union city. a one alarm fire broke out around 4:15 this morning near d street. firefighters say the neighbor across the street woke up when his dog kept barking. that neighbor then called 911 and help the person in the burning home get out safely. officials a wall-mound gas heater may have been the cause. san bruno city leaders are slamming a decision by state regulators to end an investigation into missing pg&e gas pipeline testing record as sudden and shocking. the probe by the california public utilities commission will help determine how much utility will pay in penalties for the san bruno pipeline explosion and fire in 2010.

sacramento says he was disturbed on seeing grocery stores move out and liquor stores move into that area. he connected with farmers to create the new farmers' market right there in the church parking lot. today east bay bird rescuers released baby herons hurt from a tree-trimming accident you [ applause ]. >> international bird rescue released five of the animals into marsh habitat. four from the accident and another rescued bird. in early may a contractor cut a tree outside of the downtown oakland post office, causing the young herons to fall from their nest. >> these birds had injuries that were consistent from falling from nests. scrapes, bruise and we had one bird that had a broken mandible that required surgery from our veterinarian. >> the fifth bird is still too young to release. federal authorities decided not to pursue charges against the

. alameda's crown beach got the royal treatment with dons of sand castles doting the shoreline. families were competing in the annual sand castle contest for some of the building process was pretty serious. awards were happened out for the best castle in several different age categories. >> beautiful day for that competition let's check with our meteorologist mark tamayo. >> right now on the maps can you see some patchy fog near parts of shoreline, especially

south of the golden gate bridge closer to santa cruz county, towards the san mateo coastline as well. all of this low cloud cover will be decreasing in coverage as we head into sunday afternoons. oakland 57, san josi 66 and livermore still pretty warm out there as well, reporting mostly clear skies and temperatures of 73. for tonight, mostly clear skies and some patchy coastal fog. look out towards the bay bridge, we had some patchy fog an hour or so ago, but right now we have clear skies. tomorrow some hot numbers inland and tomorrow we have a sunday streets in san francisco at the great highway and great forecast for that as well with temperatures on track to reach the lower 70s with sunday streets. for the extended, the fog will make a comeback and again cooler temperatures especially in the long-range forecast by

wednesday. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning, lots of low to mid-50s out there. some patchy fog near the coast and maybe a few patches sneaking into the bay as well to start out your sunday. here is the key headline for tomorrow, warm to very hot, especially inland as high pressure rebuilds. the sinking, a is warming air. the expression really going to feel that for tomorrow. temperatures coming up a good 8- 15 degrees above today's high. that translate as to 70s for the beaches tomorrow. in the inland neighbors very hot, near 100 degrees and i think this pattern will stick around into monday as well. and then we'll gradually shave a few degrees after that. right now a red-flag warning for parts of lake county and northern california. very dry out there. low humidity levels around 5%. here is our forecast model, patchy fog returning near the

coast tomorrow morning. in the afternoon hours, clearing skies and you notice the big temperature range from the 80s for the beaches and upper 90s to near 100 degrees by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. so more triple-digits on the forecast maps out forwards fairfield and vacaville, santa rosa back into the mid-90s, 93- 95 degrees. oakland, 84 and string of triple-digits towards antioch and pleasanton. morgan hill, 96 degrees. and san francisco, forecast high, we're going to go with 80 for tomorrow afternoon. look at the 70s for the beaches. monday another hot day as you work your way into the interior. if you want the fog, we have the love hate relationship with the fog. when it goes away we miss it. the fog comes back especially tuesday, wednesday and thursday. >> like some relationships [ laughter ] >> that is just the way it goes. >> thank you, mark. runners were on the move in the east bay today to honor
