saying about the crash. >> reporter: this is all still under investigation. if mayor quan was on her cell phone. that is what the person in the car she had told us. yet mayor quan ised adamantly denying she was on her phone. the call of the crash came at 12:30. she was driveing to a communion event. the other driver who identified herself as rene love -- lovely claims she had the green light. she says the mayor ran the red light, both cars crashed in the intersection. we're told lovely's car hit the left tire of mayor quan's car. the mayor was not injured. the other driver of the car both complained of lower back pain. >> what do you think about being in a collision with the mayor? >> i mean i think she's being

very irresponsible. she is behaving badly i mean on the phone and driving. so that just showing, why she's not responsibility. >> it's the mayor. she had a press conference last week about distracted drivers. and she was herself distracted. she wasn't paying attention to what she did. ran the red light and hit the woman's car. >> reporter: the mayor was going the speed limit and hung around to make sure everyone was okay. after talking to police she left. the officials say she will be submitting her phone records to investigators to prove she was not on her phone. we did not see any traffic cameras. police tell us this is still under investigation and as of right now no charges have been

filed. live in oakland, azmith smith. from the north bay to if south bay. today's weather provided two very different stories. fog at the coast, sizzling temperatures inland with some areas seeing triple digit heat. mark has been tracking the hot weather today and mark you say some cities even got well above 100 degrees today, right. >> 104, 105 degrees. extreme hot spots today. you were talking about the temperatures, 56 degrees. out toward walnut creek they top out at 101 degrees. take a look at these hot numbers for the interior sections for today. all these temperatures up above 100 degrees up near brentwood, walnut creek and gilroy. gilroy 102 that tied the

record. you will see that big range showing you what san francisco, actual little pretty warm in the upper 70s. pacifica topped out 57. san jose 52. napa, concord and livermore, livermore topped out 105 degrees. right now we do have patchy fog right near the immediate coastline. so that will continue to be a factor for the beaches. maybe a few patches sneak in to the bay. take a look at the current temperatures. you will see some 80s out toward livermore. 82degrees in livermore. walnut creek 81. concord 83. but san francisco has already cooled off into the upper 60s. coming up i'll let you know if you have the triple heat for tomorrow. and we'll break down the cooling trend. and firefighters say it appears a serial arsonist is at work setting some grass fires. now they're asking officials to look out for any suspicious activity as the possibility for any fire to break out of

lunch at a pizza restaurant. investigators say a man and a woman ambushed those officers. and shouted this is a revolution during that attack. officials say both officers were hit but one was able to return fire before he died. the couple then ran across to a wal-mart store where they shot and killed the person at the front door. other officers then went into that store and exchanged gunfire with the couple. now at some point, investigators say the woman shot and killed the man before turning the gun on herself both died there at the scene. it's a tragic day, it's a very, very difficult day. but we still have a community to police, and we still have a community to protect. we will be out there doing it with our heads held high. but an emptiness in our hearts. the officers were identified as 42-year-old allen beck and 32-year-old egor seldo. the two men leave behind their

wives and four children. a shooter on a school campus or workplace bay area first responders say they hope it never happens here but they need to be prepared just in case it does. noelle walker was at the peninsula with a unique exercise to plan and respond to an active shooter. everywhere you turn, there were police, fire trucks and s.w.a.t. teams on the move. >> we're participating in a mass casualty active shooter. >> reporter: this active shooter drill was planned months ago. but recent shootings in seattle. santa barbara and sandy hook bring the stark reality home. >> it could happen here so we just have to be as quick as we can responding to it. >> i had tears in my eyes. >> then we carried stretchers out. they said you can go out you'll be surrounded by sharp shooters. >> reporter: the purpose was to

♪ turn around, barry ♪ finally, i have a manly chocolatey snack ♪ ♪ and fiber so my wife won't give me any more flack ♪ ♪ i finally found the right snack ♪ ♪ harrowing rescue at yosemite park. rangers say a hiker was off the trail and climbing on the rocks at yosemite park last month when he slipped and fell into a creek below. he was swept through 100 feet of white water until he was able to pull himself from a boulder. had he not able to do that he would have taken a deadly plunge over the waterfall.

a helicopter was sent in and was able to host that hiker to safety. and hidden cash back at it in the bay area doing what he's most famous for, hiding cash. this time it was at crissy field in san francisco. christien kafton was there as the first treasure hunters found lots of money. >> reporter: hidden cash started tweeting this morning sending treasure seekers to san francisco. the clues about sand, blue people and the palace of fine arts were just tricky enough to make finding an exact location tough. >> i started following the twitter feed. and i've lived in the marina my entire life and recognized the clues immediately. in the palace in the background, the feeder in the ground. it was back here. >> i'm looking for the blue signs though. he said between the blue signs. >> reporter: rob taylor brought his daughter with him and found the first stash of the day.

a drink, or two or five and get behind the wheel and drive a vehicle. clearly we have a lot of work to do. the stretch of highway is up for redesign because it's hazardous for cars. but police say it wasn't designed but a decision to drink and drive that caused this crash costing an innocent life. >> i just pray, pray for him. for forgiveness. she has a mother. a grandmother, a sister. and she took her away. and we had future plans. we all have future plans. >> the suspected drunk driver is identified as 25-year-old jesse cockrell of petaluma. the victim's family isn't sharing her name yet as they're still notifying relatives.

a five hour siege at pakistan's busiest airport is now over. at least 13 people died and many others were wounded when militants staged a ferocious attack. witnesses say at least 10 men stormed the vip center. there are reports of explosions and fire balls coming out of that terminal. also today a second suicide

bombing killed 23 shiite pilgrims. we have new details tonight on sergeant bowe bergdahl. the u.s. soldier recently released affidavit being held by the taliban for nearly five years. there are numerous reports that bergdahl told those treating him at a military training facility in germany that he was tortured, beaten and held in a cage by his captors in afghanistan after he tried to escape. the report sited an official. bergdahl is physically able to travel he's not yet emotionally prepared to reunite with his family. comedian tracy morgan is recovering from surgery after he was critically hurt in a freeway crash. his spokesman said the 45-year- old star of 30 rock and saturday night live remains in critical condition. but is more responsive.

morgan expects to be hospitalized for several weeks. the crash killed morgan's friend. the driver that slammed into their travel van was likely sleeping at the wheel. israeli and palestinian president held a private meeting with the pope before the men headed to the vatican garden. the two presidents know each other well having signed the peace accords. the 1993 accords created the palestinian authority. the meeting was the first for the vatican as they had not hosted a meeting between two leaders. how one bay area couple is trying to put the breaks on

an update now on the developing news from oakland. that's where the city's mayor jean quan was involved in an accident. the mayor is now tweeting out her version of what happened in the collisionabout 5:30 this evening. quan denies reports that she was on the phone. saying she will turn over her phone records. quan says this evening i was driving between two community events in west oakland when another vehicle struck my left rear tire. oakland police are investigating the crash.

gunfire shattered glass. both teens are expected to survive their wounds. police spent hours at the scene collecting evidence. there's no word yet on any systems but police say they may have headed off in a white sedan headed to the berkeley hills. there's reports that hiring a company to make key parts of the east bay bridge turned out to be a costly decision. according to the sacramento bee, they picked the machinery company to create the signature tower because officials thought that company could do the work faster and cheaper. while caltranses paid the company millions it also spent hundreds of millions of the dollars to fix problems with the work. a caltrans chief engineer says the company produced excellent results. new at 10:00, while there may be skeptics over the existence of climate change there's no denying california is in a drought. all you had to do is drive through the driest mountain

will likely mean higher food prices. >> eating habits are probably going to be the thing most immediately affected by climate change. >> reporter: dale says climate change predictions show the one thing we can count on is instability in both water and energy supplies. >> it's switching from they're so uncertain they don't know what they're talking about and we don't need to do much to they're uncertain. so we really have to worry about what's going to happen. because it may well be much worse than even the current projections are showing. >> reporter: but there is hope, dale points to hawaii where i electricity is three to four times more expensive than california. that's where a solar energy boom is under way. energy that reduces carbon emissions that cause climate change. solar energy is also growing in california. >> to combat climate change is not really that expensive. it's a lot cheaper to put solar panels on everybody's roofs than to deal with the impacts of the climate changes we're
