caught in the fire that was raging out of control. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm tori campbell. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic, kind of a refreshing morning to wake you up. >> fresh would be good. a lot of 40s out there this morning. when you get down to 43 like the napa airport did and 44 morgan hill, that's chilly for this time of year. some patchy fog. sunny and nice today. a little warmer as we go into the weekend. next week there's not a consensus on this, but i'm going with the cooler forecast as another low drops in. the trend is your friend and newscast what i'm going to lean with. 56 in oakland. patchy low clouds. we'll go 73 for a high today. temperatures cooled off the last couple of days. some fog, nothing compared to what we had yesterday. already beginning to warm up, 43 last hour napa. now 51. santa rosa holding on to 49. mid-50s so far almost everybody, and a little bit of

a breeze. unseasonably strong low in the pacific northwest is what cool us down. it's also pumped in cooler air aloft. that's little bit there. a chilly morning, the breeze won't be anything like it was the last couple of days but will pick up a little bit. 80s or 70s to the interior. 60s, 70s, coast and bay. here's sal. >> good morning. we're off to a decent start i'd say, everyone on some of the most crowded freeways, i want to start with the east shore and take a look at the drive between the carquinez bridge crockett area all the way down to the macarthur maze. that's 20 minutes, and sometimes it's been three or four times that number. right now that drive time is still pretty good. getting to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see traffic that is backed up for a 50 minute drive time into san francisco with no major delays. in the east bay southbound 880 at maui, clearing an accident in fremont. a little bit of slow traffic. it's not as bad as it could be. you can tell the traffic volume is lighter because sometimes that would cause a huge delay.

westbound 24 also looks good from walnut creek to orinda. thank you sal. new this morning, the investigation continues into a deadly fire near hayward. it was first reported around 3 a.m. at a mobile home park on fuschia court, not far from mission boulevard. there are still a number of questions surrounding this tragedy. alex savidge has been on the fire scene since 3:30 this morning, and alex, firefighters tell you a specific factor about this fire that may have contributed to the man's death? >> reporter: good morning to you. this mobile home burned quickly and the person who was inside was simply unable to escape. investigators right now are trying to figure out if there were any working smoke detectors inside this mobile home. firefighters when they got here found the victim's body just about 10 feet from the front door. this fire started around 3 this morning at the fuschia court mobile home park, which is here in an unincorporated area of hayward known as cherry land.

after discovering the body, fire crews worked to keep the huge flames from spreading to any of the neighboring homes. people who live nearby woke up to the smell of smoke and called 9-1-1. the complex manager here says he went over to knock on the door and he could tell this fire was out of control. >> i could tell through his front window that it was all completely full of smoke. so i banged on it, hollered for people to call the fire department, went, turned off  the gas, and pulled out a hose with the help of a neighbor, and we couldn't control anything. >> investigators have not identified the person who was killed in this early morning fire, but we're told the sheriff's office right now is working to locate the homeowner. neighbors tell me the homeowner is a man in his 50s who lived alone. fire investigators right now are still working to figure out exactly how this deadly fire started. live this morning near hayward,

alex savidge ktvu news channel 2 news. oakland police now want your help in their investigation into a horrifying crime that happened one week ago. police are searching for three young men who gang raped a 123- year-old girl. -- a 13-year-old girl. she was walking near interstate 880 friday morning when a car pulled up next to her. >> there were several strangers in the car and at gunpoint they directed her to get into the car. once she was in the car, she had been sexually assaulted. >> the girl told police the man then drove her around oakland before finally dropping her off a couple of blocks away from children's hospital. the girl described the three suspects as african-american men. the first one 17 to 19 years old, about 6-foot 1 with a medium build and medium complexion. the second one also described as african-american, about 20 to 25 years old, 6-foot 5, light complexion, thin build

with a half inch scar on the left side of his chin, and the third suspect also described as african-american, 17 to 19 years old, about 6-foot 2, dark complexion and thin build. the car they were in described as a burgundy four-door sedan with a light colored interior. if you have any information get in contact with oakland police. 7:06 this morning, crime technicians spent hours going through the scene of a deadly shooting in san jose. a fight that first involved sticks and bot the eventually ended with -- bottles eventually owned with dead -- ended with deadly gunfire. janine de la vega is at the scene where police are wrapping up their investigation over there. good morning janine. >> reporter: good morning, yes, police officers just left moments ago. right now they are -- >> obviously we're having technical problems with janine's signal. we'll get back with her shortly for more on that deadly shooting in san jose. moving on to other news at

7:07. talks on a new contract for san francisco muni operators have broken down. some employees staged a stick out for three days last week in protest against the contract offer. both sides met with a mediator yesterday, but union representatives walked out. media officials have said if no deal is reached the current contract will stay in effect and drivers will not get a raise. the door for negotiations remains open until june 24th. your time now 7:08. a warning this morning for pet owners in pacifica. that's after a coyote snapped up a dog in the city's park pacifica area this week. the owner said she left her dog out into a fenced in backyard when that coyote attack occurred. the pacifica home was near the golden gate national recreation area where there are coyotes, mountain lions and other wildlife. we're learning more about the movements of that mountain lion captured in mountain view

last month. a cougar spent nine hours in the downtown area before being spotted and captured by animal control. the wildlife officials say it appears that it wandered into downtown mountain view by mistake and couldn't find a way out. so it hid in a hedge near a busy street for hours. people were walking and biking right by it and didn't even know it. it was eventually cornered in the parking garage, was even hiding urn a car. wild -- hiding under a car. cougars are often afraid of people and not always looking to attack. it is 7:09. governor jerry brown and democratic lawmakers are working out the final details of the state budget today. votes are expected on sunday, which is the deadline. the budget is likely to provide a boost to social and educational programs that includes thousands of preschool spots for low income families. also the governor wants to dedicate most of the budget's surplus to a rainy day fund and paying down the state debt.

sacramento international airport has taken down what it says is a controversial ad inside a terminal. the original ad featured undocumented immigrants promoting health care for all. it's been replaced by a black canvas with the hashtag and the words health for all. the nonprofit health foundation called california endowment is surprised the ad was taken down despite a three-year $40,000 contract with the airport. >> ads like this one have run in over 2,000 places. they've run in convenience stores and small markets and laundromats. billboards all over the state. >> sacramento international airport says the billboard violates its policy on advertising displays. airport officials say ads that could be controversial on social, moral, political or ethical ground are not allowed. 7:10. a southern california military base opening a new shelter to

help deal with the surge in undocumented immigrants that are mostly children. as many as 575 children could be sent by next week to a shelter at the naval base ventura county in port weenie mow. it's one of three shelters opening o'en military bases following a spike on the number of children caught crossing the border without their parents. 47,000 children have tried to cross the border since october. most of them are trying to escape violence in central america. as you mentioned earlier this morning, crime technicians spent hours going through the scene of a deadly shooting. janine de la vega is at the scene now and tells us and updating this investigation. >> reporter: police have broken down the crime scene, but officers are back at the police officer restaurant police -- police station, and they are still interviewing witnesses. the body of the young man who was shot was found lying down that hallway there in front of

one of the apartments here on 12 12th street near keys which is just around the corner from the happy hollow amusement park. police were called to the scene after 10 p.m. when someone reported a large fight involving ten people. witnesses say people had bats, sticks, even a shovel that they were using. when officers arrived those involved had left the scene and all they found was a man suffering from one gunshot wound in the courtyard on 12th 12th street. he was pronounced dead. police searched the area on foot and used a helicopter but turned up empty handed. a neighbor describes what he heard. >> one of the neighbors said that, you know, there was a couple of guys with bats that started running. all we heard was the gunshot. >> how many did you hear? >> five. >> reporter: police say so far witnesses who are giving statements appear to be cooperative. police say there are gangs in this neighborhood, so they're looking into the possibility that it is gang related, but it's still too early to tell.

7:15, new this morning, army sergeant bowe bergdahl is back in the united states. this video shows his plane landing in san antonio texas overnight. bergdahl was freed two weeks ago after being held by the taliban for nearly five years, and he had been staying in an american hospital in germany. his release has been mired in controversy. reporter steve joins us live from san antonio where bergdahl begins the next stage of his road back to some semblance of a normal life. good morning steve. >> reporter: and there's no telling how long it will take to get there. he's here at the san antonio military medical center where a

team of dozens of experts, doctors, psychiatrists, other types of counselors are helping him on that road to reintegration. today is where it begins, his first day back on u.s. soil. >> a military plane carrying army sergeant bowe bergdahl, the last american prisoner of war touched down in san antonio friday morning. it's the last leg in a journey that took him from taliban captivity to a san antonio military hospital where he'll start his transition back into society. bergdahl disappeared five years ago while serving in afghanistan. he was freed last month in a controversial 5 to 1 prisoner swap with the taliban. >> this exchange has encouraged our enemies and increased the risk to our military and civilian personnel serving around the globe. >> a military source speaking on anonymity told cnn an investigation determined that bergdahl deliberately left his base in 2009, but the army

stopped short of calling him a desserter since they don't yet know his intent. >> we're going to get a chance to talk to him and find out what was in his head there that day when he was taken captive. >> a pair of letters from bergdahl obtained by the daily beast suggest he was concerned about conditions and leadership at the base. former navy s.e.a.l. chris evan said if he did indeed abandon his post it was the wrong decision. . >> there's also some derision in the ranks, but certainly i think for him to walk away, i think he realizes in his heart of hearts that he was wrong. >> doctors say it may take months for bergdahl to recover physically, but his public rehabilitation could take longer. >> reporter: and a key moment in that rehabilitation will be when he is reunited with his parents, and we suspect that that will take place here. although his parents we leased a statement they will not be making their travel plans public. we are expecting to hear from the u.s. military later this

afternoon. they have scheduled a news conference at when point they're going to update us on what's going on. back to you. thank you steve. time is now 7:18. the newest graduates of dublin high school, they're probably slowing pretty gad -- sleeping pretty good now after enjoying an all night party organized to keep them happy and safe. dublin high school has a 20 year tradition of holding graduation on the school's football field followed by a safe and sober celebration for the graduate. this year's event was held at a nearby club sport. the grad night organizers say the idea, keep the new graduates off the streets as they celebrate a major turning point in their lives. >> they're teenagers and so, yeah, we know that this is maybe the most dangerous weekend of their lives in terms of one of the biggest weekends of their lives, and we just want them to be safe. >> the california office of traffic safety say the months of april, may, and june are

especially dangerous for teenage drivers looking ahead to summer. parties like the one at dublin high school, they're designed to get those students safely into the next phase of their lives. >> i remember picking up both my boys after their graduation all night party. they get in the car, and they're like, yeah, i feel fine. by the time they drive home they're snoring. >> like a rock. >> big day for a lot of kids. 7:20. let's check in with sal and see how things are moving on the road. >> not too bad. good morning to you both right now. traffic is doing okay in san jose in the south bay as we look at 280 out of downtown. it is a nice looking drive all the way to cupertino. out to fremont where we had a crash southbound at mowry on 880 and southbound 880 alvarado. a couple of crashes, bay bridge toll plaza is still delayed a little bit. this is a 15 minute drive time into san francisco which is better than it normally is. now let's go to steve.

thank you, sal. all righty. happy friday, a little chill this morning. had to put a blanket on last night. temperatures dipped into the 40s. we have some patchy fog. it does hold a candle in the win to chance. that northerly breeze will take care of it. here's some fog, clear and definitely cool for this time of year. it will be warmer today but just near average. it will be warmer over the weekend. next week is looking -- i'm going cooler. a couple forecast models are saying a little warmer. the 1 is strong with a big low coming in. i tend to buy that because there's a big one in the pacific northwest right now. put a quarter in the machine and see if we can get the photographic to go. patchy -- low clouds. 66, 53. the record highs not that long ago. we have to go back to 1966 and 91. the record low we have to go

7:24. did you see it. early this morning the full moonlit up the sky. there's something special about this one. it's happening on friday the 13 13th. folklore associates full moons with wear wolves and many people believe friday the 13th is unlucky. the last time there was a friday the 13th with a full moon was october in the year 2000, and the next one won't happen until august 2049. >> time now 7:25. soccer fans in brazil, they partied all night, had nothing to do with the moon. their team opened the world cup with a very important win. brazil's 3-1 victory over croatia. they were nervous after brazil fell behind 1-0 but brazil came back. they scored three unanswered goals. soccer fans here in the bay area packed the sports bars yesterday catching that opening game. they say the world cup is more than sports. it's patriotism and passion. >> soccer is literally like a religion for me. my family grew up going to church and then we slowly drifted to going to soccer fields every saturday and sunday. >> and today's matches include mexico playing cameroon and defending world cup champion spain taking on the netherlands. here's a look at the united states' schedule. the first game is monday against ghana. the second game june 22nd against port ewe gal. united states finishes with germany on the 26th and if the u.s. does well it then advances to the next round.

the months leading up to the world cup have been filled with protests in brazil. there was a cnn reporter who was hurt in one protest just hours before that first match. >> protesters want to get moving and there's some pushing back as you can see. got to go -- >> and she said got to go. >> that's reporter shasta darlington. she had a minor cut on her arm in that incident. her producer hurt her wrist. they were hit by tear gas canisters. a lot of people in brazil are angry that the brazilian government is spending $11 million on the world cup instead of spending it on low income housing,en hospitals and schools. public concern about a criminal trend spreading to a new part of the bay area. the new information brian flores got from police after a man was knocked off his

mainly 50s now. unseasonably strong low in the pacific northwest giving us our cooldown after monday's soaring temps. they came way down, 30 degrees. a little rebound today. a chilly morning, a little breezy at times, again, there's still a component of a westerly breeze. 80s for some. 60s for others, and 70s around the bay. we're looking at a commute where traffic is getting more crowded as we reach the peak of the morning commute on a friday. let's look at some of these commutes here on 880 southbound. all of a sudden this commute is taking center stage because of an accident or a couple of them that have been here for a little bit. southbound 880 and you can see how the traffic is going to be slow as you drive through heading down to the fremont area. now, one of the things you can do is use mission boulevard if you're going a short way. that's a decent alternate route. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that has become nice, well, for this time of the day i should

say. the traffic here is backed up for about a 15 minute drive time from the end of the line over to the bay bridge toll plaza. no major delays. we can go back to the east shore. i can show you the traffic on 80 between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze is not that bad. you can see it's a 20 minute drive time here. there are no major problems driving through, and the traffic is moving nicely. it's 7:33. let's go back to the desk. police in west oakland very busy searching for the vandals who smashed the windows of a coffee shop. this is the second time that the coffee shop on mandela parkway has been vandalized. tara moriarty joining us live now to tell us how customers are reacting. tara, why the owner says the vandalism is retaliation for something city officials did earlier this week. >> reporter: that's right. it opened up about a half hour ago and customers saw the damage to the windows when they came for coffee yesterday at

7:00 sharp when it opened. many don't quite understand why anyone would want to hurt this business or its owner. owner ethan ashley spent much of the morning sweeping glass from the windows damaged when two vandals targeted his store yesterday morning. the surveillance video shows one of those marked vandals dressed in black hurling chunks of concrete through the windows. ashley says it's retaliation because the night before the oakland planning commission approved a controversial redeveloping plan. while the plan's purpose is to stimulate new housing and businesses opponents say it will force long-time low income residents out. >> i felt angry, you know. they're trying to make the neighborhood look better and that's just makes me angry, you know. graffiti and breaking windows is not the way to go. >> yeah, i'm disappointed but i've dealt with the problem. this was not easy to build this place. so, yeah, i'm disappointed but

keep moving. >> reporter: wednesday an anarchist group tweeted this picture urging opponents to fight back by vandalizing so- called gentrifying businesses. this isn't the first time that kilavote coffee has been targeted. a few weeks ago someone tagged it with profanity calling themup byes. the coffee shop opened in april. ashley says he does plan to stay here for a long time to come. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. thank you tara. it is 7:35. happening today in one hour, yoenis miserly is set to return to the witness stand in the shooting death of oscar grant. oscar grant's father is seeking unspecified damages in his lawsuit against the former b.a.r.t. police officer saying meserly intentionally killed his son. four years ago he was convicted

of involuntary manslaughter for grant's shooting in 2009. meserlly served half of the sentence: a new video pleads for attorney keep the peace when a sonoma county sheriff deputy faces charges for shooting and killing 13-year- old andy lopez. >> i want to let the youth know i'm proud of you for taking a stand, but i'm even more proud of you for managing to keep it peace self- >> the new video released online by youth leaders in santa rosa asked people to stage rallies but refrain from violence. the district attorney's office has been investigating whether deputy eric goal house broke the law when he shot and killed lopez last october after mistaking the boy's bb gun for an assault rifle. he says lopez ignored repeated orders to drop the rifle. there was no word on when the prosecutor will announce a decision about filing charges.

7:36. the number 2 ranking judge in san mateo county is being charged with drunk driving. judge joseph scott was arrested during a traffic stop in redwood city over the memorial day weekend. tests showed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.12 at the time. judge scott is due to be arraigned on august 5th in the same courthouse where he serves. police in fremont want your help this morning to find a missing woman who hasn't been seen since yesterday. take a look at the photo, 65- year-old satal core. she was last seen on egret way at 3:40 yesterday afternoon. she's indian, 5-foot 3 inches tall with gray hair, black eyes. she was wearing a brown head scarf and a traditional gray indian dress. police say she hasn't gone missing before. she is considered to be at risk. the case of a missing north bay man has his family worried and petaluma police frustrated.

roy martinez parked his car near the petaluma fairgrounds more than a week ago and disappeared. his wife barbara says he left his cell phone, car keys, and wallet with his id and some cash inside the unlocked car. she says there was no sign he was planning to leave. >> if he had something intentional in mind he would have hugged all of us. i mean this little girl right here, he adores her. >> if we could be pointed in a direction or had some type of lead where at this point we would investigate that until it's exhausted and we just don't have that. >> investigators say martinez may be disoriented. he suffers from depression but his wife says he has been stable taking medication and going to therapy. she's asking anyone to call police if they think they have seen him anywhere. police in el cerrito have arrested a group of teenagers accused of beating up a cyclist

and stealing his belongings near a b.a.r.t. station. there are concerns that incident may be part of a larger trend of so-called wilding attacks. brian flores just got some new information about why this may not be the case, and brian joins us live from el cerrito. good morning brian. >> reporter: good morning. the good news in this is that the suspects have been caught. that is good news for people who live here. it does sound similar to wilding cases that we reported on in hayward and san leandro from last week. i spoke with police moments ago, and they say this particular case is not a wildings case. this was a random robbery involving a group of people. the most recent incident happened wednesday night along a b.a.r.t. path on the 11,000 block of san pablo avenue. a group of five teenage boys and two adult men jumped a cyclist and pistol whipped him. the group stole the man's wallet which included about $75 in cash, his driver's license and credit cards. a short time later police saw the group hanging out not too far away on south 45th and wall

street and they were all arrested. >> i know in the last few months as i've walked this way, i've seen stolen wallets. i've seen envelopes that had notes. like you could see that if people steal something, this is where they go to go through it. because i constantly see stuff. >> el cerrito police say they are aware of several incidents throughout the bay area known as wilding. while the case is similar wilding did not occur here. mainly because wilding is a preplanned event. in several cases throughout the bay area it involves social media. there's no evidence of that happening here. the two adults have jahi johnson and delbert stalworth. they were taken to martinez detentional city. the victim is expected to be okay. thanks brian. time is 7:40. and we are continuing to monitor this morning's developments in the iraq crisis

through a large glass window and ended up in the lobby of cnn's headquarters early this morning. no one was hurt but police did take the driver into custody. officers say the driver was in possession of marijuana and admitted to them that he had smoked marijuana earlier. the driver is now facing several charges including reckless driving. time now 7:46. a mistake made by a jury this week ended up costing the life of a man in fresno. 37-year-old bobby lee peerson was a career criminal on trial for burglary. the jury deadlocked 8 to 4 in favor of a guilty verdict, but the jury members mistakenly signed the form on wednesday declaring he was not guilty. the judge later found out about that mistake but it was too late to reverse the verdict. he then went to his sister's home picking up his belongings but got into a fight with her boyfriend and he was stabbed to

death. >> if bobby peerson would not have been released would this murder have occurred, and the obvious answer is no, he would have been in jail. >> the boyfriend was arrested. he was booked on suspicion of murder. the jury members say there was not a form to sign saying that they were deadlocked, only guilty or not guilty. >> here's a follow up on the story we first told you about on the morning news yesterday. it involved a mayor and a surveillance camera. a surveillance camera that caught the mayor of san marino in los angeles county throwing a bag of dog waste into a neighbor's front waste. the critics of the mayor dennis kineer are saying his apology is not enough. they want him to resign. they say that has tarnished the city's image. police cited the mayor for littering. the city of mountain view is testing a new pilot program allowing dogs off leash at six parks. not everyone supports the plan.

it will be a nice day, nice, nice, very nice. opens nice 70s for some, 80s for others. 60s closer to the water. we are still looking at a commute that has been slightly better than usual but now it's the peak. i want to show you the east shore freeway. on the map slowing in richmond and slowing on the actual east shore freeway. let's take a look at this. i do see traffic that's a little busier, 25 minute drive time from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. that's not too bad considering what it could be, a couple of crashes have been moved to the shoulder. if you're driving into san francisco right now, it's not taking too much time from oakland, about 20 minute drive time across the bridge. we have been focusing on the nimitz freeway heading south. we had a couple of earlier crashes, about a 20 minute drive time from 238 southbound to fremont, and then southbound 680 there's a grass fire in the area of concord. it's not affecting the traffic

so much. a couple of people called in to say they could see the smoke, but contra costa fire department says they are on the scene, and they have a handle on these brush fires. 8:02 let's go back to the desk. new this morning, the continuing investigation into a deadly early morning fire near hayward. one person was killed. it was first reported about 3:00 at a mobile home park on fuschia court, not far from mission boulevard. ktvu's alex savidge has been out there since 3:30 this morning. the neighbors are telling you more about the victim in this tragedy. >> reporter: yes, dave, good morning to you. neighbors tell me this was a man who lived alone in this mobile home, and he was unable to escape as this place filled up with flames and thick smoke early this morning. right now you can see you can get a good look at the damage here. this place was gutted by fire. investigators are still trying to figure out if there were any working smoke detectors inside. firefighters found the victim's body just 10 feet from the front door.

this deadly fire started around 3:00 this morning at the fuschia court mobile home park, which is here in an unincorporated area of hayward known as cherry land. after discovering the body, fire crews worked to keep the huge flames from spreading to neighboring homes. people who live nearby woke up to the smell of smoke and they called 9-1-1. the complex manager went to knock on the door of this place, and then he tried to use a garden hose to put out the fire but had grown too large. mobile homes like this tend to go up this a hurry. >> in mobile homes fires move very rapidly. it's imperative to us to get on scene quickly and get lines in place. >> investigator haves not positively identified the person killed in this early morning fire. neighbors tell me the homeowner, is a man who is in his 50s and doesn't have any relatives who live close by here in the bay area. fire investigators were out here for a number of hours this morning. they were gathering evidence here at the scene.

they have since left and now they are still trying to figure out exactly how this fire started. we're live this morning near hayward, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. 8:04. oakland police are asking for your help in their investigation into a horrifying crime one week ago. officers are looking for three young men who gang raped a 13- year-old girl. the teenager told police she was walking along coral road near interstate 880 on friday morning when car pulled up next to her. >> there were several strangers in the car, and at gunpoint they directed her to get into the car. once she was in the car, she had been sexually assaulted. >> the girl says the men then drove her around oakland before finally dropping her off a few blocks away from children's hospital. the girl described the three suspects as african-american men. the first 17 to 19 years old, about 6-foot 1 with a medium build and medium complexion. the second about 20 to 25 years

old, 6-foot 5, light complexion, thin build with a 1 to 2-inch scar on the left side of his chin. the third suspect 17 to 19 years old, 6-foot 2, dark complexion, and thin build. their car is described as a burgundy four-door sedan with a light colored interior. if you have any information about this case, you are urged to call oakland police. some people in southern california were rattled awake by a small earthquake. the magnitude 3.5 hit about an hour and a half ago in san bernardino county. it was centered 76 miles east of los angeles. there are no reports of injuries or damage. time is 8:06. police in san jose have just cleared the scene where a man died late last night in a deadly shooting. it happened near san jose state and a popular amusement park. investigators think the violence started with a fight

that included baseball bats and bottles. ktvu's janine de la vega has been out there all morning. you talked to a person who thinks she may have seen the gunmen before those shots were fired janine. >> reporter: that's right. i spoke with one woman who says that earlier she saw three men in this apartment complex. they were holding bats, and they were looking for someone. she says that was around 7:00. and then several hours later police say a melee broke out on 12th street here, and then a man was found shot lying in front of one of these apartments. police were called to the scene just after 10 p.m. when someone reported a large fight involving about ten people. witnesses say that those people had bats, sticks, even a shovel that they were using. when officers arrived, those involved had left the scene. all they found was a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound lying in the outside walkway of the creek side garden apartment complex, which is neither happy hollow amusement park. he was pronounced dead at the

current contract will stay in effect and drivers will not get a raise. the door for negotiations stays open until june 24th. it is 8:08, and police are warning pet owners in pacifica to be on alert. that's after a coyote snapped up a dog in the city's park pacifica neighborhood earlier this week. the owner says she had let her dog out into her fenced in backyard when the coyote attacked. the pacifica home was right near the golden gate national recreation area where there are coyotes, mountain lions and other wildlife. we're learning more details about the the movements of a mountain lion that was captured in mountain view last month. it was eventually spotted under a car where it was captured by animal control in a parking garage. data from the cougar's gps collar says the animal actually spent nine hours in the downtown area before being spotted. it appears the animal first wandered into downtown mountain

fire -- pardon me -- burning north of vacaville. it's about 80% contained. it's burned about 70 acres of dry brush. the winds blew the planes very close to some homes out there. the firefighters from on the ground and in the air, they were able to keep the fire from damaging property. 8:15. a 74-year-old man is recovering after being bitten by a rattlesnake. it happened yesterday morning at his home on ralston avenue in belmont. police say the man was reaching for a tool in his garage when he was bitten on the hand. he was rushed to the hospital and given antivenom. firefighters managed to capture the snake and say it is a reminder, rattlesnakes can be found in urban areas and do not always rattle before striking. >> so you don't think about that. >> exactly. i keep an eye out for them when i'm out walking. >> i know you do. time is 8:16. sal you're keeping an eye on the tollways how's it doing? >> it's doing okay. after just watching it for so

next week's looking interesting. it's unseasonably cool. there's a strong low in the pacific northwest. one of our forecast models digs another one right near us. remember back in january we had 18 days of record highs. they said somewhere down the road we'll have to pay for that. we had that huge warmup on monday, and temperatures then just fell off the table by wednesday, thursday as that low moved in the pacific northwest. temperatures will rebound a little bit today. napa 76. 77 concord to 81. doesn't take long this time of year to warm up. 78 in palo alto. 75 to 79. these are actually pretty close. i think the normal temp for concord is 82. very close to where you should be. san francisco's normal high this time of year is 66. this graphic doesn't want to move. maybe it's tired. it's had a tough week. 54. the fog is rapidly disappearing. everyone daly city has some.

on interstate 280. it happened yesterday afternoon blocking access to three lanes near alameny boulevard. the tree was cut up taken away piece by piece. one lane was reopened by 2:00 but the other lanes weren't open to traffic until about 6:00. a woman and her boyfriend have been charged now with the murder of her estranged husband and the kidnapping of her three children. san pablo police say alicia or ortiz took her three children out of the home. ortez and aguana were in the middle of a custody battle. a statewide amber alert was issued. the two suspects were arrested monday night. the children were found safe. a 25 soccer fans in brazil

approaching delacruz and the san jose airport. why bother with 101, use 280 or 85 to get into the west valley. those are much better options. now at 8:32 let's go back to the desk. police in west oakland searching now for the vandals who smashed the windows of a coffee shop, and this is the second time that shop on mandela parkway has been vandalized in the last few weeks. tara moriarty is live on the scene right now. you want to show the us the damage at the store and also you talked to the owner of the kilovolt coffee. he says his business was targeted because of something city officials did. what happened? >> reporter: it was targeted. the windows were busted through with chunks of concrete. the owner decided to spend the night here last night to make sure there was no further damage. you can see here that the windows are boarded up. ethan ashley spent much of the morning sweeping glass from the windows, shattered when two vandals targeted his store on mandela way around 1:00 in the morning. surveillance video shows one of

the masked vandals dressed in black hurling chunks of concrete through the windows. the night before the oakland planning commission approved a controversial redevelopment plan. the plan's purpose is to stimulate new housing and businesses, but opponents say it will force long-time low income residents out. >> these are anarchists who have a problem, and anarchists feel a special connection to this neighborhood because of a lack of services and the presence of garbage everywhere. so i don't really understand their perspectives. >> reporter: wednesday an anarchist group tweeted this picture urging opponents to fight back by vandalizing so- called gentrifying businesses. this isn't the first time that kilovolt coffee has been targeted. a few weeks ago someone tagged it with profanity laced graffiti scrawled with the word yuppies. the coffee shop opened in april. ashley says he plans to stay.

young man was killed. crime scene technicians just finished wrapping up collecting evidence out there. it's an apartment complex on south 12th and keys streets. it's near the san jose state campus. that victim described as a latino male between 15 and 25 years old. talks of the new contract for san francisco muni operators, may have broken down. both sides met yesterday with a mediator. union representatives walked out. coming up in just about 30 minutes, muni officials plan to present the mediator approved plan to their board hoping a deal can still be reached. employees staged a sick out for three days last week protesting that contract offer. >> the investigation goes on into a deadly overnight fire near hayward. a man was killed in this early morning fire at a mobile home park not far from mission boulevard. ktvu's alex savidge has been out there since 3:30 this

morning. alex, you're back now. the fire crews say a particular factor about this may have led to that man's death. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. firefighters say mobile homes like this tend to go up in a hurry. this particular place quickly filled up with flames and thick smoke early this morning, and the person inside was unable to escape. you can see that neighbors have left some flowers here at the front steps of this mobile home. neighbors are telling us the homeowner in this case was a man who lived alone. firefighters found the body just 10 feet from the front door. this deadly fire started about 3:00 this morning here at the fuschia court mobile home park, which is in an unincorporated area of hayward known as cherry land. after discovering the body, fire crews worked to keep the huge flames from spreading to some of the nearby homes. people who lived in this complex woke up to the smell of smoke and called 9-1-1. the complex manager went over to knock on the door of the home that was on fire and then he tried to use a garden hose to

put out the flames, but this fire had grown too large. >> i could tell through his front window that it was all completely full of smoke. so i banged on it, hollered for people to call the fire department, went, turned off the gas, and pulled out a hose with the help of a neighbor, and we couldn't control anything. >> investigators have not identified the person killed in this fire, but neighbors tell me the homeowner is a man in his 50s. he does not have any relatives who live close by here in the bay area. investigators are trying right now to figure out if there were any working smoke detectors inside this mobile home that might have helped the person in there escape this fire. investigators also try to figure out exactly how it started. we're live this morning near hayward, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. 8:47. new morning, army sergeant bowe bergdahl is back in the united states. a plane carrying the 28-year-

old flew from germany to san antonio texas last night. he will now be reunited with his parents, but the first meeting could last just a few minutes. he's continuing the next phase of reintegrating back to normal life. bergdahl will receive medical care at a military hospital as well as psychological and family support and debriefings. he could take months to fully recover physically as well as mentally from being held captive by the taliban for nearly five years. a san francisco man is facing several charges after a standoff with s.w.a.t. teams that lasted for hours. it's a story we reported live all morning yesterday here on ktvu. police say 37-year-old joseph solis barricaded himself in a home in visitation valley after firing a gun at family members. when police arrived at the home late wednesday night, solis refused to come out. police took extra care because

solis's two children were inside with him. the young children were found safe after he surf rended around 7 a.m. a san leandro man is facing charges after barricadeing himself in a home for two hours. police blocked off washington avenue and castro street. a man wanted for felony crimes was inside a home. an alert was issued warning neighbors to stay inside while officers tried to get him to surrender. he eventually did and was arrested around 6:00 last night. no one was hurt. our time now 8:49. let's check back with sal, watch the commute and see what's happening at the toll plaza. >> still looking pretty good at the toll plaza. i can just tell that the traffic is getting much better, and you can see it for yourself. there's about a 5 to 10 minute delay, and you can see there's really no traffic coming through here as you drive through, and there's really no traffic on the 880 ramp. you're in good shape here as you drive through. let's move along and take a look at 880 northbound.

this is very unusual. it's a nice looking drive, about a 5 minute wait or drive time i should say from the coliseum up to downtown oakland with no major delays. for some reason my maps aren't firing up here. so we're going to send it back to steve. >> thank you, sir. mostly clear, a little bit of fog out there. i think most of it's disappearing here. there will be a little bit of breeze here, but not too bad. we had that big fog bank yesterday. temperatures started to rebound. they cooled off more wednesday than thursday. they're in the 70s. for some 104, 105 three days ago. we have some fog but it's losing its grip. 50s and 60s for some, low 60s. we had a lot of 40s this morning for lows. 58, 59, lake tahoe and reno but ukiah and sacramento, don't see that all the time in june. the low in the pacific northwest, that southern edge of that kind of carved itself out, enhanced the fog and cooled it down enough where it chewed it up. that's what we have today. there's patchy fog. maybe another low dropping in

went down a steep cliff. that home has been condemned. the owners, the people who lived there they evacuated two weeks ago. now they're going to just set the house on fire. >> wow. 8:54, los angeles clippers owner donald sterling now plans to dig up dirt on the nba. the associated press reports sterling has hired four private investigators to look into the league's former and current commissioners as well as the nba's other 29 owners. sterling reportedly wants to know whether the commissioners or owners ever made any racist or sexist remarks. sterling sued the nba for $1 billion after the league tried to oust him as the clippers owner for his own racist rant. and former los angeles dodgers owner frank mccord could take the stand today in bryan stow's civil trial against mccourt and the team. mccourt's stay could be brief if the judge places limits on what issues could be allowed in
