more than 80 people are scouring camp sites on the ground and by air, looking for any sign of the girl. the search becomes more urgent as each hour passes and the sun begins to set. we'll, of course, keep you updated on any developments as they happen. new at 6:00, private security close by, but not enough to prevent some recent violent crimes in oakland. at least two robberies in broad daylight this week have some questioning the effectiveness of private security paid by residents to patrol their neighborhoods. ktvu's eric rasmussen heard from both sides of the debate today, live now in oakland with the recent crimes raising concerns. >> reporter: julie, in one of those cases, intruders used zip ties on a man while they robbed him in his own home. despite that, the extra eyes and ears of private patrol have helped, but others are yet to buy in. 2:00 in the afternoon in

oakland, a woman punched in the face and robbed. >> i feel dreadful. i wish i could have done something, you know. >> reporter: within the hour, a mile away in the upper diamond, two masked men with guns walked into the open door of a home on harding way. on the glenview neighborhood facebook page, the victim wrote, they told me to get down on the floor and zip tied my hands behind my back. private security was on duty, but the patrolman was on another street. >> i think if they were doing their job, you can't be everywhere at every moment. >> reporter: tracy mckendall helped organize private security in the neighborhood. homeowners each pay 400 to $500 a year for the services of security code 3, a guard with the same company shot a burglar in the leg in the same neighborhood in february. many neighbors here say crime is down. >> the biggest goal for private security is as a deterrent. and the more publicity we get for it, obviously hopefully the more of a deterrent it is. >> i think eyes and ears out front makes you a better neighbor and keeps down crime.

>> reporter: for now, dan leibovitz is not buying into private patrols. he says his own presence on his street offers the same deterrent to criminals looking for an easy target. >> nobody would a pick axe. >> nobody with a pick axe, no. i fix them with this. >> reporter: despite these recent crimes, at least one neighbor who has declined to pay for private patrols in her neighborhood in the past today told me she is now ready to sign on. live in oakland, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2news. san francisco police are investigating a deadly shooting in the city's mission district. it happened just after 9:00 this morning on mission and 15th streets. officers arrived to find a man suffering from several gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. so far, the name of the victim has not been released. no arrests have been made. a new grand jury indictment has now been filed against the san francisco man accused of having explosives in his apartment. the indictment includes felony charges that ryan chamberlain possessed an unregistered

weapon, as well as another destructive device. chamberlain's defense attorney has said chamberlain needs mental health treatment. he is set to be back in court on monday. former bart police officer mehserle cried on the witness stand today, as he testified in a wrongful death lawsuit over the shooting death of oscar grant. these are sketches from his testimony earlier this week. today, mehserle testified, as he did at his own trial, that he meant to use his taser, not his gun on new year's day 2009. he broke down, as he described realizing he had shot grant. oscar grant's father is seeking unspecified damages in his lawsuit against mehserle and bart. four years ago, a jury convicted mehserle of involuntary manslaughter. mehserle has served one year in prison. mountain view police say a multiagency bust turned up cash, guns, and a massive illegal marijuana growing operation. and they are crediting an anonymous tip with helping bring it all down. ktvu's anne ruben is live in

mountain view with the details. anne? >> reporter: police say they take these calls very seriously. this one led them to a small warehouse right near costco and starbucks. it came in as an anonymous tip to mountain view police. this building, which seemed to house an arcade repair shop, was hiding something else entirely. >> we smelled it, but we weren't sure. but then when they started pulling plants out, that was pretty crazy. >> reporter: officers broke down the doors here thursday afternoon, uncovering what they describe as a sophisticated illegal growing marijuana grow operation. they seized more than 800 plants. >> the estimated street value of just the pot plants that were here in mountain view was over half a million dollars. >> reporter: but that wasn't all. two additional raids in san jose netted illegal guns, $10,000 in cash, and more drugs. >> there was also narcotics, methamphetamine and other drugs, as well as thc, or honey lab in another one, which is very dangerous. >> reporter: 33-year-old samir

med vehicle, hernandez, and abbey rose were all taken into custody. those that work next to the mountain view warehouse watched as the raid went down. >> knocked on our door and everything around here, they wouldn't let nobody come in or out. >> definitely surprising because this is all high tech, pretty nice area. >> reporter: and mountain view police believe it's a little safer today, thanks to that anonymous tip. officers say this is evidence that their see something, say something campaign is working. >> those little calls, little tips that come in here and now, those are sometimes the ones that crack a case wide open. >> reporter: in addition to the marijuana, meth and guns, police also found some military- grade stun grenades and they found a toddler wandering around who was taken into protective custody. anne ruben, ktvu channel 2news. two sisters in san francisco are accused of forcing seven young women into prostitution in the city's richmond district. 37-year-old chow hay, also

known as judy, and her 36-year- old sister, gay ningo, were arrested after a multimonth investigation. authorities don't know how the young women ended up at the brothels or where they are now. the sisters are each charged with pimping and pandering. san francisco district attorney george gascon joined the council general of brazil today, in signing a memo of understanding, aimed at ensuring the safety of domestic violence victims and survivors of human trafficking. gascon said san francisco is a cosmopolitan city and having close ties between law enforcement and foreign governments is important. >> we provide on-the-ground training to staff, how to recognize potential victims of trafficking, human smuggling, what are the signs of domestic violence. >> gascon also said it's important to have staff trained because often foreign nationals approach their consulates with problems rather than police. a man who thought he was going to meet a woman he had

met online ended up getting punched and robbed instead. it happened around 8:00 last night here on mission street in san francisco's amazon neighborhood. the victim told police when he arrived at the location he was met by two men. he says he was blindsided by a punch and then the men took his wallet and cell phone and ran away. a fire burned dangerously close to homes in the north bay today. crews in marin county scrambled to put it out before it damaged any homes. ktvu's christina rendon joins us live from san rafael, where two neighborhoods were evacuated. >> reporter: well, there are about 100 homes from those two neighborhoods that were evacuated. people have since returned home. you can see behind me, crews from calfire are packing up to go home, too. but at one point, this fire was very intense. fast-moving flames fueled by dry grass, burned on a hillside in san rafael. >> we're coming, we're coming! >> reporter: it's a sight dozens of evacuees living atop

the hill fear. >> there is a lot of dry grass, so we're always thinking about that. >> then i came running down here and you could see the fire was only about a hundred yards away. >> reporter: but flames were dangerously closer to those at the bottom of the hill in the con temp poe marin neighborhood, where tracy newman lives. >> been here over a decade. i've never been so scared in my life. >> reporter: she says flames burned to the back of her mobile home and a few of her neighbors lost decks in the backyard. san rafael fire chief christopher gray says the 12- acre fire could have been catastrophic, but thankfully crews were helped by homeowners that had cut the grass down. >> we're asking that people work with us and help protect their homes and their neighbors' homes by cutting back that brush, because the fire will come. >> reporter: one man was arrested for throwing an object at a firefighter, because police say he was upset with their response time. but newman says these firefighters are heroes for saving their homes. >> they saved a lot of our houses. i'm really happy. we're really proud of them.

>> reporter: police say that man was cited for assaulting a firefighter. investigators are now looking into what caused this fire. live in san rafael, christina rendon, ktvu channel 2news. first responders reacted to a mock emergency today on the san francisco bay in which a plane bound for the oakland airport went down in the water. operation splashdown was done to help prepare crews in the event of the real thing. from news chopper 2, you could see the first responders training just off the san leandro marina. more than 100 people from 25 different agencies, including the coastguard and the alameda county fire department took part in today's drill. >> we know that incidents like this can happen and it really tests this sort of a response to this kind of incident, but it represents any large scale event that would happen in the bay area. >> the results of today's exercise will be evaluated and crews will get another chance to practice at a full simulation drill in september. a group working to raise the minimum wage in oakland took its campaign to city hall today. the lift up oakland coalition

presented new research by uc berkeley. the research shows if oakland's minimum wage was raised from $8 an hour to $12.25 an hour, more than a quarter of oakland's workers would receive a pay raise. researchers say that would improve the overall health and happiness of those workers. >> working full-time, you should not have to be on public assistance making impossible choices between food, rent, gas, electricity. the best medicine for this problem is tackling the underlying root cause, which is income. >> the research goes on to note that a minimum wage increase would not negatively impact employment or the economy. the issue is expected to appear on the november ballot. a back-to-school program that helps kids in need has an urgent need of its own. the family giving tree has been getting kids ready to go back to school since 1996. the program makes sure children from low income families start the school year off right, with a new backpack and all the supplies they need to have a successful year. but now the program is in urgent need of a warehouse.

. and we have breaking news to tell you about right now. i want to show you a live picture where you're looking at a grass fire burning right now in san jose. this is a live picture from our traffic camera. this is burning in the area of moore park avenue and college drive. you can see again that large white plume of smoke there. we saw flames a few minutes ago. the temperature in the area, according to our chief meteorologist bill martin is about 75 degrees. winds are moderate at 20 miles an hour. earlier this week, we had that really hot weather, so everything is extremely dry, but crews battling right now. the headline at this hour, a grass fire in san jose near moore park and college drive. we're working to get more information on this fire. new at 6:00, in a

neighborhood where stories about violence are more common than success stories, a young man from east oakland is hoping the community will invest in his future. 19-year-old jason daniel never thought he would go to college, but as noelle walker reports, he has now been accepted to a summer program for one of the most premier music schools in the country. >> reporter: east oakland has its own sound track. things will warm up. we've got pretty brisk winds out there. they are continuing to keep temperatures kind of mild and cool around the bay. tomorrow, a little bit less wind in these temperatures, or these oranges. 80s will start, working their way west. there's the winds, 13 mile-an- hour oakland. 16 mile-an-hour gust in novato. this is pretty typical for this time of night. kind of a late spring pattern. san jose, 75 degrees and clear right now. air quality right now is real good because of the winds we've been seeing and cooler temperatures. air quality will get to be sketchier into the weekend because things will become a little warmer. winds will be dying down a bit, become more stagnant. san jose tomorrow, 83 degrees for a daytime high. start off at 56. it's really the perfect weekend, even at the coast. it's always perfect at the coast. even if you have fog, is my point. not a lot of fog to speak of coastside. i suspect sunday you'll see

more fog. along the coast even, you'll have temperatures in the mid- 60s. inland, upper 80s, mid-80s in the hot spots, sliter cooler on sunday. both saturday and sunday, very similar. there's that patchy fog i talked about. this is the model picking it up, barely picking up. it's all over the place. temperatures without a lot of fog, less of an onshore flow, start to warm. you see a few high clouds come in, but the reds, 90s come this way. inland bay valleys tomorrow and sunday, we could see upper 80s and maybe a low 90s on the eastern-northeastern fringe at vacaville. temperature in pittsburg, 90. 91 in brentwood. not too hot, almost just right. 80 in fremont. 87 in gilroy. along the coast, should be fog- free. pacifica and daly city and half moon bay, upper 60s, low 70s. beautiful. sunday, a little bit more fog creeps into the forecast, with temperatures trending down a bit. five-day forecast with your bay area weekend always in view.
