crews rushed to put out a fire that was headed straight for homes. the question tonight, was it arson. once again san rafael sent fire agents racing once again suspicious fires come dangerously close to homes. it's happened twice in three days. this afternoon a two alarm brush fire burned about 4 acres in the marin woods. homeowners and fire crews are being especially vigilant, deb.

>> reporter: today's fire started next to this walking trail. no one is saying arson just yet but it's considered suspicious. dozens of people running for safety. as grass fires erupt behind a mobile home park. this was friday. 16acres burned in terra linda and today water and retardant rained down again in marin woods on the opposite side of 101. >> people are certainly concerned. >> especially the people who's houses bud up to open space. these homeowners were driving home from work and could see this fire was burning close to home as he was stuck on traffic. >> it was nice that knowing the firefighters were on top of it.

they actually had a fast response. >> reporter: this fire captain took us to the top of the hill where the fire start. >> we haven't discounted arson but at this point it's just suspicious. but it's unlikely it was an accidental act. >> reporter: friday's fires are more sinister since they started close to each other. this homeowner watched the commotion today and wondered about the coincidence. >> we have some friends that live over there so they just got through a fire and now one here so it's the season right. >> the fuel conditions are such that this is fire behavior and activity we would see more in august or september. >> reporter: because fire really races during a condition homeowners warn if you haven't

yet, clear the brush around your home it gives firefighters a fighting chance, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. breaking news tonight out of the peninsula where an investigation is under way after a man was found dead in stanford campus housing. the unidentified male was found this afternoon at a residential building on mayfield avenue that's near laganitas drive. the cause of the death has not been released. the sheriff's office has been calleded in to lead the investigation. california lawmakers boy they cut it close with less than six hours to go before the deadline. they approved a state budget tonight. cara liu in the newsroom with a look at what's included in this $156 million spending plan. >> reporter: legislators met the midnight deadline with several hours to spare. approving a spending plan in the fiscal year that starts july 1st. the budget easily passed in the

state and senate. they called it a huge improvement from just a few years ago. it includes more money for education as well as a rainy day fund governor brown wanted. >> we have a balanced budget with a surplus and a rainy day fund that will be in the billions of the dollars. we're paying down debt aggressively while increasing funding for education and slowly for other services which have been cut. california is in good shape. >> reporter: republicans took aim at the increased spending saying there's still a lot of pork and pet projects. >> funding the high speed train continues to not be popular with the people. but somehow we keep finding funding here. there's a poppuri here and there but all in all not a bad budget. >> reporter: for this budget there was no drama and no going into overtime. >> when you tell the state legislature they're not going to get the budget on time

they're going to be docking their own pay. you've hit a cord. >> most of the budget's main cords were worked out. cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on the budget, the plan includes more money for social services that includes med cal, welfare to work, child care and preschool program. it also begins a preschool plan and reserves $10 million. most of that goes into that rainy day fund. the contract for san francisco's transit drivers expires at midnight. transit officials told ktvu tom -- ktvu.com there's no threat of a sick out. a proposal calls for raises of more than 11% over two years but requires workers to contribute 5.5% to their pensions. a fishing accident led to a

death of an oakland man. he was fishing at a preserve when his line got tangled. while trying to reach that line he slipped and fell hitting his head. friends tried to help. police have not yet released the victim's idea -- identity but say he was 52 years old. a boat overturneded in a popular southern california lake. the boat flipped over in ventura county. firefighters were call to the scene, they say everyone had ingested some water and nine people were taken to the hospital as a precaution. however no one was seriously injured. everyone on board was wearing a life jacket. there is no word on what caused that boat to capsize. >> investigators continue to look into the circumstances of that shoot out near a nevado

county shoot out. around 3:00 yesterday, a chp officer was responding to a call from a bureau of land management ranger. when the two came across man with a gun. there was a shoot out and both the rainer and the suspect were hit. the chp officer injured his leg but it's not clear how. all of the injuries are said to be nonlife threatening. the san francisco social media consultant at the center of an fbi bomb case is scheduled to be back in court tomorrow. 42-year-old ryan chamberland was arrested earlier this month. following a three day man hunt. chamberlain had bomb making material in his apartment. chamberlain is currently in custody. he's set to appear in court tomorrow for a bail hearing.

developing news tonight on the crisis in iraq. dozens of marines arrived in baghdad to provide additional security there at the embassy. this after videos of thousands killed. >> reporter: insurgents in iraq continue their push toward baghdad. the group isis most recently taking control of the northwest iraqi town. last week they gained control of iraq's second biggest city. dozens of people including members of the iraqi military fleeing for safety. >> they have no mercy, they bumper people. they kill. they have no conscious.

car, looked and seen pop's tent really gone. >> reporter: instead of making the curve he went through the guardrail, plowed through this homeless encampment and the suv kept going. it didn't stop until it went across harrison street. the chp say it is 27-year-old driver of that suv was booked for dui violation. he was not seriously injured. >> it's dangerous around here. >> reporter: the people who live in this area say it's not the first time a vehicle has crashed into their encampment. >> i'm trying to go some where else but what happened is my rent went up. >> reporter: many say they would like caltrans to put up extra signs or traffic signs to alert drivers to the sharp curve. in the meantime, pop's friends plan to keep him in their memory as they try to keep an eye on the cars in their neighborhood. one man is dead and another hospitalized tonight after a double shooting in oakland this afternoon. it happened on 103rd avenue

andplymouth street. police are not releasing many details on what led up to the shooting. but authorities did say two shooters were involved but they're not releasing suspect descriptions at this point. investigators say the wounded victim is expected to survive. vallejo police are asking for help in trying to identify people responsible for two arsons at an el men industry school last month. a fire on may 31st at the loma vista burned this playground that was just built a few years ago. damage is estimated as much as $15,000. the other fire was set on the south side of this school and caused little damage. solano crime stoppers is offering close to $1,000 reward for information in this case. the review is under way for two different proposals to keep doctors medical center in san pablo from closing. health officials are trying to stop the financial bleeding and preserve crucial services after a tax measure failed last month. a free standing emergency room

a house fire in newark new jersey claimed the life of six people early this morning. the fire started around 4:00 a.m. and spread quickly. no word tonight on the cause according to neighbors. a woman live there had with her daughters and grandchildren. arson invest dwi -- investigators have been called in. the engineering student who tackled a gunman at a seattle christian college earlier this month graduated this weekend and received a standing ovation. >> john meese suma kumlade. >> reporter: john meese pepper sprayed and pounced on a man as he was reloading his gun at pacific university. one person was killed and two

others injured. the gunman had at least 50 additional rounds. he told police he claimed to kill as many people as possible and then himself. starbucks is offering a new perk. the seattle company is partnering with arizona university online. most of the company's 135,000 employees are eligible and they don't have to remain with starbucks after getting their degree. a pilot working for an illinois sky diving company got his first jump this weekend all by accident. on just his fourth flight yet. the pilot realized a pilot hit the tail of the plane. for several minutes, he tried to control the plane trying to make it back to the airport.

deputies ordered people in the heights area to leave the area to avoid the expanding fire. the evacuations affect about 500 homes. tonight crews have contained the flames. the forest services say most tourist destinations are still open. a firefighters is recovering tonight and a family of four is homeless after a fire that started in their garage quickly spread. along with the fire fighter two people also suffered first and second degree burns. azmeth smith talked to the homeowner about the devastating fire. >> reporter: this video captures the intense flames fire fighters were up against when a garage fire got out of control. in the background you can hear a person screaming. >> that was one of our residents, one of the children from that home and they finally realized the home was completely involved in fire. >> reporter: the fire happening

just before 8:00 this morning. the family inside at the time escaped but not without injury. >> and they checked everywhere. no fire. but when they opened the garage door a flame in the garage door. >> reporter: the homeowner suffered burns while trying to put the fire out. he showed us the injuries to his finger. >> why is it sad to you? >> because we are worried right now about where we will live. >> reporter: everything in the kitchen and front room caught fire. one firefighter burned his ear. the cause of this fire. >> the fire appeared to start at a hot plate. >> a reminder for all families to not leave cooking appliances on and to have a fire extinguisher handy. that could have put out the fire before it turned into
