the tough road ahead for them in brazil. the ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. we are live in san francisco. there is a house fire under investigation. seven people were forced out of their homes when those flames broke out early this morning. christien kafton has been talking to the red cross. i'm claudine wong in for pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. it's chilly outside. >> windy. almost 50 at the altamont pass. there is 25-30 for many. there is a very unseasonably strong cold wind.

72 downtown san jose. already clearing taking place in the north bay. 40s and 50s. and temperatures will rebound slowly today because we have gusts to 26, 25, 23 take your pick. some areas are calm but there is definitely a pretty good breeze from treasure island to the delta. that is the low responsible for it. we will warm it up on wednesday. windy and cooler for most today. morning low clouds will give way to sunshine. 70s inland. 60s and 70s today. these are below normal temps. here is sal. we are looking at a commute that is getting busier by the moment as we get to the peak of it. this throws people off. in summer it gets light so early. but here we are and traffic is already very slow on the east shore in some spots. but still only a 19 minute

drive. when you get to the bay bridge you will be waiting a little longer here. already seeing signs that today may not be the busiest day at the toll plaza but it will be busy for the next hour or so. westbound 580 continues to be slow as you drive from tracy to livermore it gets better. and the other side of the bay 101 looks good. now 6:02 let's go back to the desk. new this morning firefighters in san francisco are trying to figure out what caused a fire that damaged three homes. ktvu christien kafton is live with a look at that damage and the help being given to the people effected. christien. >> reporter: we have been out here since 4:00 this morning. now that the sun is coming up, we are getting a clearer look at how much damage we have. there is a big pile of debris. as we look up toward the homes, you can see the area where it seems the fire may have started

between these two buildings. when firefighters arrived they say the flames were sleeping way up into the air. here's what firefighters are telling us. it started shortly after midnight. they believe the fire started outside of the unit at 384 ellington on the second floor and spread to the neighboring building. in all two buildings a total of three units damaged in this fire. three families displaced. one person was treated here at the scene with an unknown injury. the cause is under investigation. the red cross was on scene when we arrived here earlier this morning. in these throw families there was six adults and one child all displaced by the fire. >> they are all shaken up. of course to varying degrees. so is they are going through that. obviously very traumatic. they are worrying about family

members and pets and so forth. >> reporter: coming back out here live, this is the area where a lot of the investigation centered. the fire believed to have broken out in the second floor of this building. under investigation simply because it happened so literate -- so late at night. after midnight. they are not calling it suspicious but they are taking a look and investigating. we will continue to follow up with san francisco fire to see if they have a more definitive cause. live in san francisco christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:04. san rafael firefighters on alert after two suspicious fires. the latest one burned yesterday in marin along highway 101. a fire forced evacuations. about 16 acres were burned in that fire.

yesterday's fire started on a bike trail around 11:00. the flames spread up and over a hill behind homes on john stone drive. they are not calling it arson but do say it looks suspicious. the fire on friday it started on a hillside near the mobile home park. firefighters say it is -- coming up at 6:30 brian flores will have more on the investigation and what -- firefighters are still battling against a wild fire in kern county. it has burned more than 2,000 acres and forcing more evacuations. the shirley fire is burning in the sequoia national forest. they record ided -- they ordered the evacuation of 500 homes. several roads are closed but the forest service says most

tourist destinations are still open. however park visitors say they are on edge and prepared to leave at a moment's notice. >> we have talked about what we would grab. and i put all of my stuff back in this truck. >> the fire started around 7:00 friday night and right now it's 10% contained with almost 300 firefighters working to put out the flames. the cause of the fire is under investigation. as fire season begins, cal fire is holding a training exercise to make sure their crews are ready. at 9:00 a.m. sonoma, lake county, will be taking part in a helicopter training exercise. it's off lighton springs road. shouldn't be alarmed if you live in the area and see this. they will be practicing hoisting drills and setting up portable water stations. many people in san francisco are demanding extra traffic signs and flashing

lights. it happened early yesterday morning off interstate 80. the chp says a duke driver went -- a drunk driver went too fast through a curve. a man sleeping in a tent was killed. >> he looked out for people. helped them out when he could. >> people that live in the area says this is not the first time a car crashed in that encampment. the driver was booked on dui charges. nine children were among the 15 people rescued after a boat overturned in a popular southern california lake. most of the victim's were wearing life jackets expect an infant who was in a car seat. he was kept afloat by two adults. nine people were take ton the hospital mostly with minor injuries.

no word on what caused that boat to capsize. happening today the u.s. national soccer team makes its 2014 world cup debut. they will play ghana 3:00 p.m. local time. ghana has knocked the u.s. team out of the last two world cups. both teams are will in group g nicknamed the group of death. also includes germany and portugal ranked as the second and fourth best team in the world. here in the bay area there are several free world cup watch parties planned. in san francisco a big screen is set up in civic center plaza. and sow ma street food park will be showing a big game.

it happened yesterday near the -- officials say another plain closed officer also pulled out a pistol and fired two shots in the air. officials say officers were hit by molotov cocktails thrown by officers. a stanford university student found dead in campus housing. coming up in 25 minutes what the university is saying as the police investigate. >> an investigation into army sergeant bowe bergdahl. good morning. we are still looking at a commute that is mostly good. a look at highway 4 it is slowing down over the hill. we will tell you about this commute and some of the commutes in contra costa

returned here to the u.s. on friday and reportedly two of those years were spent in solitary confinement where bergdahl was only able to talk to his captors through a metal box. bergdahl is being treated at a medical army center in san antonio, texas. john kerry demanding the immediate release of three israeli teenagers believed to have been kidnapped last week as they were hitchhiking in the west bank. one of the four boys is a dual israeli citizen. that hasn't been confirmed independently though. meantime israel has detained more than 150 palestinian suspects saying they believe hamas is behind the kidnapping. hamas has not claimed responsibility. time is 6:13. and an investigation goes on into a shootout near a nevada county campground that injured to officers. saturday afternoon a bureau of land management ranger called

for assistance a nearby chp officer responded. while in the tahoe national forest they came across a man with a gun and there was a shootout. both the ranger and that suspect were wounded. the chp officer was also hurt. we're not sure how he was hurt. none of the injuries are considered life threatening. joe biden has added a stop in guatemala to his previously planned trip to l.a. tin america. he will discuss a surge in immigrant. on friday he is planning to meet with leaders from guatemala, el salvador and honduras. so far this year agents have apprehended 48,000 from those country. president obama is waking up in california this morning. he spent the weekend with his wife and daughter malia in the palm springs area. he golfed where they are staying early yesterday. on friday the president delivered the commencement

address and spent time at a fundraiser in orange county. he is scheduled to fly out of the valley later this morning. glance colorado man fighting back after his homeowner's association told him his flags don't meet its standards. david renner says he's been fined for hanging three flags that include a don't tread on my flag, a colorado flag, and betsy ross flag. the homeowners association is ordering him to pay $3,000. displaying historical flags that is protected under the american flag act of 2005. >> do they really think it's raining down property values? what are we gaining and what are we losing? are we losing our freedom in exchange for a nice man curred lawn? >> he says he plans to talk to a lawyer about this? if the lawyer says he doesn't have a case he will pay the fine but he also says the next time he buys property he will make sure there is no

two proposals are being considered to keep doctors office open. one would convert the hospital into a free standing emergency room. other cases would be sent to other medical centers. a review of the options will be completed before the end of july. form one racing legend michael schumacher is out of the hospital. he had been in a coma since a skiing accident in december. time is 6:25. san francisco gave a rousing tribute to maya angelou at glide memorial church just like she requested.

fast. 40s for a couple in the north bay but a lot of 50s or low 50s on the peninsula. menlo park is 50 degrees. he'lls burro is -- he'll burg is 52 degrees. that low up to the north is responsible for our windy and cooler conditions. some morning low clouds. and they are getting chewed up pretty fast here. 60s and 70s in areas that should be much warmer than that especially away from the coast. traffic is doing pretty well. i just found out some of the ferry boats are out. it will be bus service instead because of maintenance. and one of the boats have problems. when you show up you will be taken on boats. let's take a look at the live

suspicious fires in the past couple of weeks. we saw lots of dry brush out there. you go up here to marin county and see the exact same thing. now yesterday's fire is the second suspicious fire in the past three days. this one started around 11:00 in the morning and burned four acres into the area along highway 101 near a bike path. the fire spread up and over a hill behind homes again on the 200 block of john stone drive. they are not calling it arson but do say it appears suspicious. friday's fire being deemed arson. that began around noon on friday on a hillside near a mobile home park. the fire bushed about two decks. investigators believe it's arson because that fire believes it has started in multiple places.

people need to prepare for the homes for the fire season. >> i know there have been some cases and certainly people there are different driving factors if people are doing that. and we want to use the opportunity to get the word out to the people who's homes may be effected about what they can do so regardless of how or if a fire starts at least their home is in good as shape as possible. >> and then on thursday there was another fire at samuel pete taylor park. that fire burned about 10-15 acres here in marin county. as we take you back out here live you can see the dry brush at this home. firefighters say the best advice basically clear out the brush around your home and this is a preview of a very busy fire season. live in marin county brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police have arrested the two men responsible for a deadly road rage sitting.

ortiz and reyes were both arrested last month in the central valley. they did not announce their arrest earlier because of an an going investigation. on may 6th the pair shot and killed 37-year-old lam after their cars collided on center road. with the help of witness accounts they were able to track down the suspects. it grew national attention after they started an online fundraising campaign for his wife and two young sons. the fund has raised $120,000. time is 6:35. an investigation under way at stanford university after a student was found dead on the campus hours after graduation preponderate body of the male student found yesterday afternoon in an on campus -- officials say he was a senior. santa clara county sheriffs investigators haven't identified the student yet. the cause of the death is not clear. in a statement stanford's vice

coleman avenue isn't open yet. we are told the retailer has resolved its issues and they have apologized for any inconvenience this has caused its customers. no one likes to wait in a long line. that's what happened here yesterday. target experienced a computer glitch that shut down registers for several hours yesterday leaving customers frustrated. some of them took to twitter to talk about what they were experiencing in the store. according to shoppers employees were scrambling during the shut down to come up with a better solution. at one point the stores started taking cash payment. >> it was super crowded and i didn't realize that it was a problem with the computers and i heard a few people talk about it and then they started following everyone into one long line. >> reporter: target apologized for any inconvenience and says it was able to restore the registers eventually. the glitch was not related to

any security issues. the retail chain is trying to restore consumer confidence after a security breach during last year's holiday spree. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. with contract talks between muni and its drivers they are worried there could be another sickout. but transit officials told ktvu new there is is no threat. contract talks could start-up again as early as today. the current labor contract expired on june 30s. a proposal calls for raises of more than 11% but requires workers to contribute 7.5 best to their pensions. we were unable to reach the union yesterday for comment. this morning san francisco mayor ed lee and david chiu are celebrating a milestone in the construction of a new central subway. last week the second boring machine finished carving out tunnels. the project will extend the t- third street muni line. construction on the subway is scheduled to be finished in

2019. the san francisco man accused of possessing bomb making materials he is due back in court this morning. ryan chamberlain he was the focus of a nation-wide man hunt after the fbi searched his apartment two weeks ago. court documents say they found a home made remet controlled bomb and firearm with a serial number filed off. his detention hear willing begin at 9:30. his arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow. state lawmakers beat the midnight deadline. the $108 billion general budget includes money for education and sets money aside in the rainy day fund the governor wanted. it passed almost completely along party lines. the budget provides more information for social services. it also begins to pay down a short fall in the teachers pension fund and reserves $2 billion with most of that money going into a rainy day fund. now that more coverage of

displacing seven people from their homes. it happened on ellington avenue. that is where we find christien kafton with a closer look at how much damage was caused. >> fire in this neighborhood broke out shortly after midnight. you can see an area where a lot of the fire was concentrated here. when forevers arrive they say both buildings were engulfed this flames. >> first company to arrive on the scene they had heavy fire showing between 384 and 398 ellington street. they made an interior tact. we had extension into the building. >> reporter: it all started again shortly after midnight. investigators say they believe the fire started outside of 384 ellington on the second floor and then spread to the neighboring building. in all two buildings a total of three units damaged in this fire. we have learned one person was traded here at the scene with an unknown injury.

that pilot was on his fourth flight yesterday when the last sky diver on board hit the tail of the plane. for several minutes the pilot tried to regain control of that cessna. when he found out he was not going to make it, he decided to jump. thankfully he had a parachute. >> i jumped out of the aircraft. i was at 2,000 feet. and when i jumped out, the plane spiraled and crashed. the wind carried me and i landed in this soy bean field. >> can you believe it was ken martin's very first time sky diving. the plane look at it. it was destroy on impact. let's check in with tori campbell for a look at what is coming up on mornings on 2. >> good morning. coming up in minutes on mornings on 2, the controversy over berkeley student cleaning
