good morning. we're live in marin county where residents and firefighters are on high alert after a string of suspicious fires over the weekend. is the work of an arsonist? we'll give you an update -- coming up. evacuations underway near a central california wildfire. what is expected to happen later this week that has firefighters racing to get the upper hand on the fire this morning. it's a cooler forecast. also a very windy forecast.

[laughter] >> if you are in seattle. you can feel the system coming in. it's coming out of the northwest. high pressure is out here. teeter-totter effect. lift one, drop the other. unseasonably weather up in the northwest. i think the low cloud deck get chewed up. pretty good gusts up in the higher elevations. 40, 50 miles an hour. some drier air is beginning to work its way in. that will wipe out a lot of this low cloud deck. 50s on the temperatures. we had a couple 40s. it will be a day where temperatures are staying below average. gusts 42. 20s plus for concord. also oakland. that's not stopped it all morning long. that's the low right there. digging into the inner mountain region, the back side of that brings us a cooler and breezy to windy pattern. some morning low clouds. it will be sunny. 70s in areas that should be in

the low to mid-80s. 60s, coast and bay. here's sal. we're still looking good when it comes to the morning commute. i want to show you some things as we start off with the bay bridge. it's backed for a 30-minute drive time into san francisco. i can't say that's too out out out of the ordinary. also looking at the commute here on the -- the san mateo bridge, that's getting crowded as well. about a 15-minute drive time from the toll plaza to foster city. 580 westbound slow in livermore and part of dublin and pleasanton. it gets better by the time you reach pleasonton. 680 is slow. 101 is the slowest freeway in the south bay. 85 is slowing down approaching 17. back to the desk. thank you, sal. this morning, marin county firefighters are investigating whether two fires in three days are the work of an arsonist. this video is of a fire that started yesterday afternoon in

marinwood along highway 101. ktvu's brian flores is live in san rafael with why firefighters know at least one of the fires was intentionally set. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. there is a lot of concern from residents in marin county, not only because of who is starting the fires. if you take a look behind me, you can see a lot of dry brush. we've seen this all over the brush in the bay area. we were in livermore three weeks ago, you saw the dry brush. it extended up here. that's the fuel lighting some fires. this one started on the 200 block of johnsstone in san rafael. yesterday's fire is the second in the past three days. this one started around 11:00 in the morning, burned about four acres along highway 101 yesterday afternoon near a bike path. the fire spread up and over a hill behind homes on the 200 block of johnsstone drive. firefighters say they are not calling this arson but do say the fire appears suspicious.

friday's fire is being deemed arson. that fire began around noon on friday near a mobile home park in terra linda. it forced the evacuation of a hundred homes. it burned two decks and the siding of the home. it burned 16 acres. investigators believe it's arson because the fire appears to have been started in multiple places. this morning with the threat of arson and the dry conditions. firefighters say people need to prepare their homes for the fire season. >> if something doesn't look right, be sure to call. you can call 911 to report. if something looks out of the ordinary and there's something that doesn't look right in the open space or in an area that given -- given the conditions that we have, we'd ask anybody to be vigilant and let us know. >> what do you do? you are helpless at that point. it was nice to see that everybody was on top of it. we knew there there would be a pretty fast response. >> reporter: pretty heavy

response as well. on thursday, there was another fire at a park. that fire burned 10, 15 acres. as we take it back out here live, you can see how close the homes were near the hillside. the best advice to clear out any dry brush around the home. and they say this is a wakeup call to what is expected to be a very busy fire season. back to you. >> thank you. firefighters in kern county are racing against the clock to get control of a large fire before the weather gets hotter later this week. the shirley fire is burning in the sequoia national forest. over the weekend, sheriff deputies ordered the evacuation of 500 homes. the red cross has opened an evacuation shelter at lake isabella. several roads in the area are closed but the forest service says most tourist destinations are still open. however, park visitors say they are on edge and are prepared to leave at a moment's notice.

>> we've talked about what we would grab and actually i put all of my stuff back in the truck just in case. >> the fire started around 7:00 on friday night. it has burned 2200 acres and is just 10% contained, almost 300 firefighters are working to put out the flames. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. 7:07. a major computer problem last night at target stores nationwide caused long lines and a lot of frustration for customers. it's the latest problem for target of a after that security breach that affected millions of customers. ktvu's janine de la vega live in san jose now to tell us how the company is responding. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this target on coleman near the airport was one of the stores that was affected yesterday. it opens up in the next hour. but the company says it has resolved any issues related to checkout. target experienced a computer glitch that shut down registers

for several hours yesterday leaves customers frustrated. some of them took twitter to talk about what they were experiencing. according to shoppers, employees were scrambling to come up with a better solution. many customers reported not being able to use their credit and debit cards. but at some point, the store was able to accept just cash. >> she was rebooting the register she was on. and then she went to the register behind me. >> she was literally bouncing between registers trying to get the people out. >> ended up telling us there was a problem with the system. >> reporter: target apologized for any inconvenience and said it was able to restore the registers e-- eventually. they also said it was not related to security. they are trying to restore consumer confidence after a security breach during last year's holiday shopping spree. janine de la vega, ktvu channel

2 news. 7:08. an investigation goes on on the stanford campus after a student was found dead hours after graduation ceremonies. the man's body was found yesterday afternoon in a campus residential building on mayfield avenue. now, according to the stanford daily newspaper, school officials say he was a senior. santa clara county sheriff's investigators haven't identified him yet but they say the cause of his death is not clear. however, school officials say there's no threat to public safety. many people in san francisco demanding extra traffic signs and flashing lights for an intersection where a homeless man was killed over the weekend. it happened early yesterday morning at the fifth street offramp of interstate 80. the chp says a drunk driver went too fast around a sharp curve, crashed right through a guardrail and plowed through a homeless encampment. a man sleeping in a tent was killed. >> looked out, helped them,

gave money if they needed it. >> the people who live in the area say this isn't the first time a car has crashed in that samier karnment. the -- same enkarnment. the 27-year-old driver not hurt was booked on dui charges. controversy is brewing over a bathroom cleaning punishment at a berkeley elementary school. the mother of an 11-year-old student said her son was forced to clean the bathrooms at the elementary school after an alleged bullying incident. the mother claims the school never notified her that her son got in trouble and she's especially upset because the boy came down with whooping cough after the punishment. school officials told the paper, it's not unusual for schools to use cleaning duties as the form of punishment. they also add the student did not do any scrubbing. he only picked up paper towels with gloves. officials don't believe the

whooping cough was contracted from the cleaning. the u.s. soccer team makes its world cup debut. they will play ghana. both teams are in group g, nicknamed the group of death. it also includes germany and portugal ranked as the second and fourth best teams in the world. each team plays at least three games, then the top two teams in the group addians to the next round -- advance to the next round. soccer fans with are expect toed to watch -- are expected to watch the game. there are free watch parties. coming up at 7:45, claudine wong will tell us where the parties will be and how the u.s. players spent their final hours before the game.

bergdahl spent five years in captivity before finally returning to the united states on friday. and reportedly two of the years were spent in solitary confinement where he was only able to talk to his captors through a metal box. right now, bergdahl is being treated at an army medical center in san antonio, texas. new this morning, spanish police say they've arrested eight suspected jihadists and broke up a recruitment network in madrid. the group was lead by a former detainee at the guantanamo bay detention camp. the group reportedly sent volunteers to recruit militants and to fight in syria and iraq. united states secretary of state john kerry is calling for the immediate release of three israeli teenagers believed to have been kidnapped as they were hitchhiking in the west bank late last week. one of the boys is a dual- israeli american citizen. u.s. officials have not yet

confirmed this. israel has detained more than 150 palestinian suspects, saying hamas is behind the kidnapping but hamas has not claimed responsibility. 7:15. vice president joe biden flies to guatemala. he will talk about the children crossing the u.s. mex kan border. this visit is an added stop to a previously planned stop to will then america. he plans to meet with leaders from guatemala, el salvador and hon honduras this week. they've apprehended 48,000 children from those countries. he will make stops in colombia and the dominican republic. president obama wakes up in california this morning. he spent the weekend with his wife and daughter marie law in the -- malia in the palm springs area. we don't know the first family

celebrated the rest of father's day after playing golf. he spent time at a fund-raiser in round -- orange county. a man is fighting back after his homeowners association said his flags don't meet the standard. he says he's been fined for hanging three tags that include a don't tread on me flag, a colorado flag and a betsy ross flag. now, he says the homeowners association is ordering him to pay $300. but he says displaying historical flags is protected under the american flag act of 2005. >> do they really think it's bringing down property values. >> it's not like i'm flying an oakland raiders flag. what are we gaining and losing? are we losing our freedom in exchange? >> he plans to meet with a lawyer about this. he says if the lawyer tells

him, he doesn't have a case, he will pay the fine. he says the next time he buys property, he will make sure there's no homeowners association. new metering lights in alameda county are almost ready to go. they are along highway 92 at eden landing road, industrial boulevard, and hercules boulevard. the -- hesperian boulevard. the lights will be turned on today and will stay green. the metering lights go live on tuesday morning of next week. so heads up about that. 7:18. hey, sal, the toll plaza, how is it doing? >> it's okay. i wouldn't say it's great. >> yeah. >> but it's also not affected by any crashes getting into san francisco. it's about a 30-minute delay, which is normal for a monday getting in. there's no major crash on the bridge. that's the good news. you will be waiting for 20 minutes at the toll plaza and then ten minutes on the bridge. your total drive time is about

30 minutes. 880 still looks good, though. it doesn't look that bad. northbound 101 san francisco, that looks good approaching the 80 split. no problems on the bayshore freeway heading down to the airport in case you are trying to catch a flight. northbound 101 traffic is busy in traffics from near the capitol expressway up to sunnyvale, it's not as bad as it has been the last few days. it's slow. we have they a couple of bad ones on 101. 85 is slow from 87 to 17 heading northbound. back to steve. all right, sal. thank you, sir. we have clear skies for some. some low clouds for others. patrick in redwood shores says can you give a world cup forecast? i said no. that's a little far removed from my forecast zone. i can tell you, very heavy rain is expected. we'll seal how that translates into the game. i'm not touching that one. that's what i read and that's what i've seen. for us, it's hard enough here to get the forecast.

the 45-year-old had been in a coma since a skiing accident in december. his manager says he has left the hospital in france to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. she did not say where he was taken or give any additional details of his condition. schumacher's team believes the driver hit a rock while skiing and landed head first on another rock. >> an incredible story. >> a long case of rehabilitation for him. all right. a rare case where the pilot of a skydiving plane jumped out of the plane himself. what happened on that plane and why the pilot made an unplanned jump. up next -- a 3-year-old girl asked to leave kfc because of her appearance. why the restaurant is issuing a big apology and a big check.

san francisco gave a rousing tribute to maya angelou at glide memorial church just like she requested. [ applause ] [ cheers and applause ] >> yes! >> that's what it was like. maya angelou's life and spirit celebrated at the memorial filled with music, tears of joy and tears of sorrow. there was a long line waiting to get into the church. some people had to watch on big screen tvs outside. maya angelou's son told the congregation his mother believed people had more similarities than differences. >> my mother's message is about the elevation of the human spirit, about loving and respecting ourselves as well as each other. ♪ >> maya angelou spent part of her life living right here in the bay area and even after she moved away, she continued to consider glide memorial church one of her spiritual homes.

7:26. kfc is now donating $30,000 to a family in mississippi. the family says she were asked to leave that restaurant because their 3-year-old daughter's facial injuries were disturbing other people. victoria wilcher lost her right eye and suffered a broken jaw and puncture wounds after being attacked by dogs in april. she's limited to only soft foods. her grandmother took her to kfc for mashed potatoes. an employee approached them. >> she said we would have to leave. we were disturbing her other customers. victoria's face was disturbing other customers. >> kfc issued an apology. the mother will help pay for the medical bills. tfc says it has a zero- tolerance policy for hurtful or disrespectful actions from its employees. a terrorist group is

francisco, 65. here's sal. all right, steve. we're trying to find out about the vallejo ferry. we know that they don't have a 7:00 ferry run into san francisco. there's word that they were going to have a bus bridge instead, buses from vallejo to the ferry terminal. but there have been some reports that those buses did not show up. that would be really tough for those commuters who rely on that form of transportation. we're trying to find out more about this. let's take a look at westbound bay bridge coming up to the macarthur maze. traffic is backed up there. 25 to 30-minute delay. you would think about using the san mateo bridge. not a bad alternate. it's about a 15-minute drive across the san mateo bridge. only applies if you are in the middle of taking the two. you shouldn't drive too far out of your way to go to the san mateo. right now the traffic heading down to hayward looks good on 880. northbound traffic looking good past the coliseum. 580 will be slow through

livermore and most of pleasanton. your drive time is about normal, about 15 minutes, from grant line road to the 680 interchange. back to the desk. >> sal, thank you. new this morning -- firefighters in san francisco searching for the cause of an overnight fire that damaged three homes forcing some people out into the street. christien kafton is live in san francisco and you just talked to a neighbor who says a lot of people jumped in to help the families. >> reporter: that's the one good piece of news, the neighbors pulled together to try to help out in this terrible situation. you talked about the fire investigation. we can tell you that the fire investigators were here. you can see how heavy the fire damage is between the two buildings. when we first arrived, the red cross was on the scene. they said in all three families were displayed by the -- displaced by the fire. >> they are all shaken up to varying degrees. they are going through that.

obviously, it's very mentally traumatic. all long-term residents. they are worried -- first about family members and pets and so forth. >> reporter: here's what firefighters are telling us -- that this fire started shortly after midnight. investigators say they believe it started outside of 384 ellington on the second floor, then spread to the neighboring building. we've learned that one person was treated here at the scene for an unknown injury in connection with this fire. again, those two buildings involved but three units in all. three different families affected. in the last half-hour, i spoke to the neighbor who was out here. he tells me that the whole neighborhood helped me pull together to help the families living here. >> they were helping each other get the pets out. i think the only thing missing was a cat. one neighbor got her dog out but was still looking for a cat

last night. >> i'm just glad nobody got hurt. >> reporter: back out here live, you can see how intense this fire was burning right through the roof of one of the buildings here at 398 ellington. and, again, the fire investigator really centered on this space here between those two buildings. at this point, firefighters are not saying it's suspicious but they are saying due to the time, the fact it happened after midnight on that second floor area, it does bear further investigation. we'll let you know what the investigation yields as that information becomes available to us. we're live in san francisco for now, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> because the wildfire season expected to be busy, the red cross is offering this -- a new wildfire app. it provides the latest wildfire news statewide. it also offers ideas on how to get ready for it. it issues alerts when high fire warnings are issued for your area. you can download it or on

google play. 7:36. the search for a uc berkeley student is moving away from the forest where he went missing. vernon matthews was last seen june 6th after going for a hike. he was staying in poll okay lines -- pollock pines. investigators think he made it out of the forest but will not say why. the family is in limbo and are hoping for good news. police have veasted two men -- arrested two men responsible for a road rage shooting that killed a man allegedly. alejandro reyes and fidadelfo silva ortiz were both arrested last month in the central valley. police say they did not announce their arrest earlier because of the ongoing investigation. on may 6th, they shot and killed phuoc hong long lam after their cars nearly collided on senter road in south san jose.

police say with the help of witness accounts and surveillance video, they were able to track down the suspects. phuoc hong long lam's death through national attention after an online fund-raising cam campaign was started -- campaign was started. so far the amount raised $120,000. with the contract talks between muni and drivers union stopped some commuters are wor irid about -- worried about another sickout. contract talks may start up again as early as today. the current contract runs out on june 30th. a proposal calls for raises of more than 11% over two years. but it requires workers to contribute 7.5% to their pensions. we haven't been able to reach the union to get their reaction. this morning san francisco mayor ed lee and the board of supervisors' president, david

chu are celebrating a milestone in the building of the new central subway. last week, the second boring machine finished carching out tunnels. the project will extend the third street muni line from near at&t park to china town. the event starts in 90 minutes. construction on the subway is due to wrap up in 2019. the san francisco man accused of possessing bombmaking materials is due back in court this morning. political and media consultant ryan chamberlain has the focus of -- was the focus of a manhunt. court documents say they found a homemade remote-controlled bomb and a fire arm with a serial number filed off. his tee tension hearing is -- detention hearing is set for 9:30. his arraignment is set for tomorrow. the chronicle is reporting that joe montana refused to participate in the fbi sting

that ended with the arrest of leland yee. his attorney said the fbi sent an undercover agent to meet with montana. the attorney says the agent wanted to discuss the possible investment in montana's planned hotel development in santa clara. but montana was not interested and his attorney says he never did anything illegal. mon tan non's attorney said this -- montana's attorney said this was just an attempt to get information for the information against yee. state lawmakers passed a new spending money for california. the $108 billion budget includes more money for education and sets money aside in the rainy day fund. it pays down some of california's debts. it passed almost completely along party lines. republicans complained about money set aside for the high speed rail project. a local economist says the big news, lawmakers beat the deadline. >> when you tell the state

we're looking at a -- stalled because. we're looking at the picture of the ferry. the 7:00 didn't run. i want to thank michelle miles for sending these photos. the 7:00 ferry did not run. still huge lines. it's unclear if some of these lines will affect the later ferry service. these lines were terrible. at low of these people -- a lot of these people not having a good monday. and a motorcyclist has been killed in a crash near highway 101. janine de la vega is there live. janine? >> reporter: sal, we're on berryessa. it's closed between commerce at and mayberry. you can see the big backup there on berryessa where cars are being detoured. this is an industrial area. the commuters use it to get to work. they take this route to get to 101. you know, a big rig was involved in this accident. you can see it there in the middle of berryessa. there's still also a body in

the middle of the road. just after 7:00 this morning, emergency crews responded to berryessa after a big rig and a man riding a harley collided. the motorcyclist died at the scene. people who work in the area say they heard the crash and right now, police are talking to them. they are talking to, again, witnesses, the driver of the big rig, we're still waiting to hear if he's okay. we're unsure if alcohol is related or what led up to the accident happening. we do know that vta bus service has been rerouted. because of the way this looks back out here live, it appears the scene will be here for several hours. if you look at the size of that big rig. again, there is they are -- they are still waiting to have investigators come out here and complete their investigation. we don't know the identity of the driver or if he's from san jose. we're expecting a spokesperson from the police department to arrive here on scene to give us more details.

reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, janine. 8:04. firefighters in san rafael on alert after two suspicious fires in just three days. the latest one happened ahong highway 101 in the marinwood area. brian flores is joining us live in san rafael. what are firefighters saying now, brian? >> reporter: the chef tells me that the fire that burned yesterday along the hillside on the 200 block of johnstone, still considered suspicious. not yet arson. but as you can see, regardless, the fire did come close to homes here. the fire started on a hillside near the 200 block of johnstone drive around 11:00 yesterday morning. this bike path goes along the southbound side of highway 101. the fire overall burned about five acres. thanks to a heavy response by fire agencies, the fire was only burned to dry brush. this morning, fire officials are continuing to investigate.

one of the things they will be looking at are reports of a vehicle that was stopped or stalled along the side of the freeway around the time of the fire. no question this was scary for many homeowners. we spoke to someone who tried to make it home. >> this is probably one of the scariest moments. my son was home alone and asleep at the time. he has a soundproof room for hiss business. they couldn't -- his business. they couldn't wake him up. that was one of the scariest moments. >> reporter: another fire on friday is considered suspicious on a hillside behind a mobile home park in terra linda. it did force the evacuation of 100 homes. it burned two decks and a siding a home. that was the extent of the damage. that fire burned about 16 acres. there was a pretty heavy response there including the aid of helicopters. investigators believe it's arson because the fire appears to have been started in

multiple places. speaking to many residents out here live, they say there's been several fires in the past years here but they are glad that the heavy response from firefighters yesterday and firefighters say the best advice is to clear brush away from your home and they also say this is a wakeup call to what it is expected to be a very busy fire season. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, brian. firefighters in kern county, they are racing the clock trying to control a big fire in the sequoia national forest before the weather gets hot et later this week. it's -- hottest later this weekend. it's called the shir little fire. they evacuated 500 homes. the red cross opened an evacuation center at lake isabella. park visitors are nervous. they are ready to leave at a moment's notice. >> we've talked about what we

would grab and actually i put all of my stuff back in the truck just in case. >> that fire started around 7:00 friday night. it has burned 2200 acres. it's only 10% contained. almost 300 firefighters are out there fighting the flames. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. another investigation continues into a shootout near a nevada county campground that injured two police officers and a suspect. investigators say saturday afternoon, a bureau of land management ranger called for help in the tahoe national forest. a chp officer rushed over. they came across a man who had a gun and there was a shootout. both the ranger and that suspect were hit. the chp officer was not hurt -- was also hurt but we're not hour how he was hurt -- sure how he was hurt. none of the injuries are life- threatening. three people, including a firefighter, are recovering

after a home burst into flames on rockaway drive and alum rock avenue. the fire started in the garage and quickly spread to the rest of the home. a family of four was able to escape but a firefighter and two of the people in the home suffered first and second- degree burns. >> it's a sad situation but on a larger scale we're happy they got out safely, that none of them were killed in the fire. >> investigators say the fire was caused some by some type of cooking device left near combustible material. the red cross is helping the family. target, hoping for a smoother day today after a lot of the customers were stuck in long lines last night. target experienced a computer glitch, one that shut down cash registers for several hours. a lot of people were on twitter showing their frustration. according to shoppers, store employees were scrambling during the shut june trying to

find a -- shutdown trying to find a sluths. at one point, the store started to take cash payments. >> it was supercrowded. i didn't realize it was a problem with the computers. i heard a few people talking about it and then they started to follow everyone in one long line. target has apologized for the inconvenience. they were able to restore the cash registers eventually. they say the glitch had nothing to do with security issues. target is still trying to restore consumer confidence after that major security breach during last year's holiday shopping season. a competitive pianist took what could have been his most embarrassing performance and made it a winner. the man was one of three finalists in the san jose international piano yocompetition this weekend -- piano competition this weekend. he was playing when he passed out. a doctor in the audience took the musician off stage and treated him for dehydration.

the father says the family is in limbo hoping for good news. san jose police i have arrested two men allegedly responsible for a road rage shooting. the men were arrested last month in the central valley. police say they did not announce their arrest earlier because of an ongoing investigation. the two shot and killed 37-year- old phuoc hong long lam after their cars collided. police were habl to track down the suspects with the help -- with the help of -- were able to track them down with individual. there was a campaign started for the victim's wife and young sons. the fund a has raised nearly $120,000. with contract talks between muni and its drivers unions

welcome back. >> firefighters in san rafael on alafrt after two suspicious fire -- alert after two suspicious fires. the latest happened yesterday in the marin wood. on friday, a 16-acre fire burned near a mobile home park in terra linda u arsonists are suspected in that air -- linda. now, arsonists are suspected in that area. yesterday's fire is still under investigation. some san francisco ferry riders were delayed because two ferry boats were out of service. buses were needed to carry the passengers to and -- to and from vallejo. one of the ferry boats is scheduled for a maintenance. the other one, out for unplanned work. both of them are expected to be back on the waters by tomorrow. and a motorcyclist has died after colliding with a big rig this morning. a little while ago in san jose. it happened before 7:00 a.m. in the area of berryessa road

it happened yesterday. officials say another plain clothes officer also pulled out a pistol and fired two shots into the air. officials say officers were hit by mol law tok cocktails. the protesters are upset over the roughly $11 billion spent by the government to host the world cup games. ktvu's claudine wong has been following the feeds on social media about the world cup and has more on the pregame excitement. they also gave us a video son vine of that walk. this is a tradition. you can see where they are and the soccer ball is with them.

we have a lot happening in our morning commute. >> you've been busy. >> westbound 80. let's start there with a commute on the eastshore freeway from the car keen friz bridge -- carquinez bridge. still holding steady at more than a half-hour. when up get to the bay bridge, you will see a backup that's getting a little bit better but still a 25-minute drive time across the bridge. no major problems. southbound 101 in marin county, still remains a huge problem from novato to san rafael because of earlier issues. still a little bit of fog left. kind of a cool, breezy pattern. windy for some. the fog is starting to erode slowly. i think most of it will disappear. it's losing out to cooler air. finally a 60 popping up. temperatures really held in check. still some 50s holding on for parts of the east bay as well. these are definitely struggling to warm up. you combine that with a sea
