berkeley after 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. it happened near bancroft way. we have a picture to share with you. it was taken after the accident happened. the child may have been riding a bicycle or a scooter. police say the child was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. the identity and age of the child hasn't been released. we will update you as soon as we have new information. a truck may have started a brush fire in san jose that sent smoke into the sky. we told you about the fire at noon. ktvu's azenith smith tells us firefighters had the upper hand today. >> the wind is not that bad right now and it wasn't bad at the time and the weather was cool. nubbingally they had the upper hand. you could see the fire. it started with piles of bark

father and then start crying. through a translator she says her husband's death has been devastating and she hopes the trial will bring justice. [ speaking foreign language ] >> she say i saw my husband get shot in front of my eyes. hopefully -- [ indiscernible ] >> police in san jose launched a fundraising campaign for the campale. the father was a -- campaign. the father was bus driver. that campaign raised $106,000. new developments tonight police radios a life line for offenses but during a shooting earlier this month half of berkeley police channels were unusable. it happened 10 days ago and they are still trying to figure out what happened. ktvu's allie rasmus sat down with the director of the communication system to get answers. >> reporter: the focus of the

region. at some point when transmissions went something interfered with the signal, making half of the channel unusable. >> for us -- channel unusable. >> for us it is suspect for us. >> reporter: technicians are trying to figure out what caused the interference and where it came from. oakland is not part of the system but its radios had a similar problem two years ago. in that case the problem was traced back to cell phone towers. >> plasma television could cause interference. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: for now all they can do is into test the system to get more answers. >> at this point there is no way to make sure it won't happen again. >> all of the systems have the

in the past few days two suspicious fires burned near homes. investigators are stopping short of calling them arson but tonight people who live nearby are on edge. one of the fires forced dezens of evacuations. -- dozens of evacuations. ktvu's cristina rendon is here with the latest. >> reporter: if you look behind us, down the hill you can see where the fire line burned close to the homes. investigators think the fire started in multiple locations and merged into one big fire

while trying to make an illegal u-turn. the driver hit the motorcyclist who was in the fast lane in the same direction. >> when officers arrived they found the motorcyclist underneath the vehicle. fire and paramedics were on scene and pronounced the motorcyclist deceased at the time. >> this is san jose's 18th 18th traffic fatality of the year. rare weather phenomenon spot in nebraska, twin -- spotted in nebraska. twin tornadoes. they caused extensive damage when they touched down. the national weather service says a tornado watch is in effect for eastern nebraska and western iowa. i don'ti don't think i have seen that before. in the bay area, breezy today, let's go now to our chief meteorologist. >> it was cool last couple days. windy at the coast right now.

stations and there are already calls to add more and extend it to fisherman'sman's wharf. general motors today issued another recall for millions of cars with potentially faulty ignition switches. this latest recall involves 3.4 million vehicles. the problem is with the ignition switch, the problem led to a recall of 2.6 million cars and linked to 13 deaths. the carinizeclude the impala -- cars include the impala, lacrosse and regal and cadillac. this year gm issued 44 separate recalls involving more than 17 million vehicles. the federal government fined gm $35 million. a college football player badly injured when his apartment catches fire.

hit. the boy was hit by an suv. you can see here there is large blue suv. we are not sure this is the one that was involved. these pictures taken after the accident happen. the boy has significant injuries. the child has been taken to the hospital and the driver is cooperating with police investigators. we will update you as soon as we have new information. a very active police investigation in berkeley. search is moving behind the forest where a university of california at berkeley student disappeared. he was last seen on june 6. his father says searchers think he made it out of the forest but he has given out no other information. millions of young salmon trucked to the pacific instead of swimming there.

methamphetamine in his retirement community apartment. according to reports police pulled him over on saturday for a traffic stop and found meth in his car. a search of his apartment at the california league fresno village turned off meth and heroin and the equipment to make methamphetamine. he was already on parole on a drug contradiction. the ceo of starbucks announced they are teaming up with arizona state university and will help pay for workers online bachelors degree. the cost to starbucks isn't clear. 70% of the work force does not have degrees and the cost -- degrees and the cost could be $30,000 per student. >> i don't view it as a cost. this is an investment. and i am so confident this is going to drive performance and enhance value. >> employees must work at least

every year. drivers are required to slow down when they see caltrans vehicles or move over. wildfire in the sequoia national forest is threatening homes tonight. it started three nights ago. the u.s. forest service says a thousand homes, power lines and communication facilities are at risk. the fire destroyed three homes and damaged another. two of the homes were abandon and the fire forced hundreds of people to evacuate. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and a close call for an air tanker that was helping fight the fire. crew members contacted the to report a equipment issue. here is a picture of the tanker after it landed. the nose gear collapsed. two crew members were on board. no one was administer.

uber drivers held a protest in san francisco this afternoon saying they work hard for no pay. >> they gathered outside the uber office on market street. they said they are making half of what uber claims they make and it is difficult to communicate with uber. >> we are tired about this labor. $18billion company and we don't make $50,000 a year. >> we have thousands of drivers in the bay area. >> uber representatives met with drivers and tried to fix any problems. today dream works is launching a new channel on
