adding urgency for a push for better security at federal facilities. courthouse security under fire after someone fired a shot that pierced a window of the federal courthouse in oakland. >> we're definitely concerned. >> reporter: agents with the federal protection service discovered the bullet during a check of the building. upon further inspection officials realize it passed through the chambers of u.s. district judge white. it went through a window, struck a microwave before coming to rest at the wall of the jury room. >> at this point we don't believe that any of the judges were targeted. >> reporter: instead they believe it was a stay bullet from a shoot out. still judge white says he hopes the administrative offices will

step up and protect judges by installing bullet-proof or bullet-resistant materials. >> we're going to look at and see what security enhancements we can do to the exinterior of the building so that this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: oakland police removed that bullet and i checked earlier tonight with the police and they tell me that they haven't made any arrests in that weekend shooting. a shooting that took place right across the street here and a shooting that's raising security concerns right here. reporting live tonight here in oakland, i'm heather holmes, ktvu channel 2 news. those security concerns are real. you may remember back in 2006 when a sniper shot and wounded a judge in reno who was standing in his third floor office at the washaw county courthouse. the judge recovered, the man later arrested for shooting him

was angry about his case. he was later convicted and sentenced to 20 years to life. developing news now out of antioch tonight where crews contained a two alarm srepblg tear fire. at one point that future was threatening homes. the fire broke out on piney drive between indian hill. that's about a block away from diablo school. no homes were damaged. fire crews say they expect to remain at the scene for several hours putting out hot spots and watching for any flair ups. meantime firefighters are still monitoring an area of the east bay hills where five small fires burned this afternoon. in 10 minutes the firefighters suspicions that have neighbors there on edge. now to martinez where four female employees at a papa murphy's have filed a lawsuit

after they discovered a camera in the bathroom. the women's former boss is at the center of this lawsuit, amber. >> reporter: the victim's say the video taping took place inside this papa murphies on arnold drive. now they want compensation for the trauma it caused. the law states that lasser the former manager was convicted of secretly video taping employees in the restroom. the victims range in age from 17 to early 20s and no longer work there. they are now seeking damages in a civil suit. >> what he did was horrible. i mean, he took advantage of the power he had over these women. this is a place he knew they changed clothes. >> reporter: the lawsuit says as a result of finding cardboard boxes with holes cut out of them placed on wired shelving in the restroom, one plaintiff became suspicious of lasser's video taping. one day after lasser had been in the restroom for five or 10

minutes. plaintiff went into the restroom immediately after lasser exited and found a camera inside the cardboard boxes. >> mr. lasser was arrested. >> just think of how many other people are out there doing the same thing. it's kind of scary. >> reporter: the lawsuit names lasser, papa murphy and others. we went to his home in martinez tonight. >> i'm looking for jason lasser. you know where i can find him? >> no. >> are you his mom? >> yes. >> would you talk to me about what he's facing? >> no. >> okay. thank you. >> reporter: i also tried to contact the owner of the papa murphies who was named in the lawsuit. i have not heard back from him. the women's attorney says there's an court date in august and expected to go to trial

within a year of that date. amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. police in lafayette are investigating a deadly crash two women were struck and killed by a truck. it happened in upper happy valley road at about 1:15 this afternoon. it appears the woman was in the crosswalk at the time. the truck driver stopped and is cooperating with investigators. police are not releasing the woman's name but say she was about 54 years old. you will recall five women died when they were trapped in the burning limo in may of 2013. the state's puc overnight was found insufficient to insure

consumer safety. auditors are not holding the company responsible. >> once they begin the investigation they're taking 238 days to complete the investigation. >> reporter: the report also found the cpuc lacks policies and procedures to ensure carries comply to the law. and that when citations are issued they are for amounts much lower than allowed. the cpuc agreed with these findings and said it will follow the recommendations. the legislation advancing in sacramento that some companies worry could put them out of business. developing news from nigeria where a suicide bomber attacked people watching a soccer game.

witnesses say the injured were taken in trucks to a hospital. the militant group haram is suspected in the bombing. it's carried out other attacks on soccer fans in the last few weeks killing 40 people. boca haram is also the militant group holding 250 schoolgirls captive. the suspected ring leader of the attack in benghazi libya is being held tonight on a u.s. navy ship. today president obama announced the arrest of ahmed abu khattala. he is now charged in the attack on the u.s. diplomatic outpost. khattala had been living in the open even doing several interviews. >> the presumption is that you know, he was going to mcdonalds for milk shakes every friday night and we could have just picked him up in a taxi

cab. >> it became a political flash point and critics raised questions about security at the compound and whether the obama administration ignored potential warning signs. a man who threatened to kill state senator leland yee could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. 46-year-old everett bashum pled guilty. they found bombs and assault weapons in his home in santa clara last year. yee is currently suspended from his senate postdue to corruption charges. it would have made california the first state in the country to use warning labels about the risk of obesity and diabetes from sugar but an assembly committee

rejected it. a 4-year-old is recovering tonight after it almost died in a pool. authorities are crediting a neighbor with saving his life. as azmeth smith reports, that neighbor's -- >> reporter: i looked out and saw a black thing. i didn't know what it was. >> that black thing, a black t- shirt. no one else around. >> i just took the pool keys and ran. >> reporter: dol who doesn't even know how to swim, jumped in. as soon as she got the toddler out she performed cpr. >> we were just pumping, pumping, pumping. he puked. a little breathing started. so a little hope started. >> when i saw my wife was coming out of the water

screaming help, help, and was crying. >> reporter: her husband ran to help trying to read the instructions at the pool. >> he was nonresponsive. but then he puked once and he started to sigh. >> reporter: when they arrived they heard a sound that made them feel relief, the boy crying. >> that's something we look into with any investigation. we try too gather all the facts and try to figure out what happened. >> reporter: as for dolis she doesn't consider herself a hero saying she was just doing what she would hope any other mother would do. >> i was just thinking about my baby. it was very scary. >> reporter: we knocked on the boy's home but no one was home. it's unclear if any charges will be filed. azenith smith, ktvu news.

they battled five separate grass fires and tonight authorities are calling those fires suspicious. crews made quick work of the flames but they remain on alert tonight and investigators say this may not have been an accident. ktvu's ken pritchett join us live from diamond canyon park where those fires all started within minutes of each other today, ken. >> reporter: well cool weather and very little wind certainly aided firefighters in their efforts today but that weather, that lack of wind made et all the more suspicious -- made it all the more suspicious why these fires started to begin with. this is news chopper 2 just after 3:00 this afternoon. you can see two smoke columns in the canyon along park boulevard. a vantage calfire use when its helicopter dropped hundreds of gallons of water. >> the difficult part is this

is in very steep terrain. >> reporter: the efforts made quick work of the fires and then -- >> the smoke is straight across from me. >> reporter: a neighbor spots a third column of smoke at the top of the canyon it was from yet another small fire burning near a hole. there were five fires in all. three main fires and two spot fires. but it was the two in the canyon that raised the most suspicious. >> the wind is not a factor. it's very calm wind conditions. so for a ember to start a fire in another part of the canyon is very suspicious. >> reporter: these fires are being investigate as arson. and saturday, near from here another two fires. >> there's a lot of kids, transients. >> reporter: in this canyon. >> in this canyon area. >> reporter: despite suspicions the cause of the fire remains unknown. the hope is that it doesn't happen again. >> this is a beautiful canyon.

we walk through it all the time. i would hate to see it go up in flames or take more homes out. >> reporter: no one was injured, no property was damaged by fires they were actually quite small just a few acres all together. but it certainly has the potential with destruction with homes surrounding this canyon. a canyon full of dry vegetation. in oakland, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. during that fire, students at vacation bible school in piedmont were evacuated. teachers took the students for yogurt and called their parents. they also packed up books and important papers just in case. there was a lot of smoke and helicopters were landing in the parking lot. new information tonight in the case of two women found dead on mount pies just days apart. the coroner now says their deaths were both accidental. because the two deaths happened

so close together there was concern that a serial attacker might have on the lose. but today an investigator found that the two were accidental deaths. searchers discovered that 33- year-old glenkowski, she died of hypothermia. the body of 50-year-old marie sana died from a head injury. she apparently tumbled off the trail. she was hiking after dark and was not familiar with the trail. they also say she had a blood alcohol level of 1.2. it happened on interstate 580 west of grant line road near the alta mont pass.

claudine wong obtained the 911 calls after that accident. >> reporter: officials believe the first impact was right here in the back bumper. and officials are saying there's no way the driver did not know it happened. calls from drivers who watched it happen started coming in after 11:30 yesterday afternoon. >> there's been a very serious accident on highway 580. a car swerved and hit a truck. >> reporter: it and on westbound 580 in the alta mont pass. >> from witnesses statement everybody was going at freeway speeds and the vehicle suddenly swerved to the right. >> it looked like the car swerved. i don't know but it hit him really hard. >> the truck went off the road and flipped about five times. >> reporter: this truck swerved and hit a freeway sign before

rolling down an enbankment several times eventually ending up right side up on the onramp. >> do you know if the driver is going to need an ambulance in the overturn. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. >> we'll get that going as well. >> reporter: the truck was heavily damaged. nguyen suffered serious injuries. while others stopped to help the other driver involved, they just kept going. >> there's no doubt in witnesses mind that the driver knew that he pushed the car off the road. for a car to continue on their way like nothing happened that takes a different person. >> reporter: at last word she was in icu at eden valley medical center. claudine wong, ktvu news. san francisco's city attorney today announced a multimillion dollars settlement with an art school for it's marketing tactics. the art institute will pay for

had today. widespread 70s around the bay. inland areas warming into the upper 80s to low 90s for some of the hottest locations. so it's still going to feel quite nice out there for your wednesday. as we get going tomorrow morning, a lot like this morning, widespread 50s. 53 in fremont. 52 for napa and 60 degrees expected in antioch. i want to give you a compareson here and show you exactly how much warmer i think we will be in some areas. napa hit 80, a 10-degree jump in livermore so you're definitely going to notice that. san francisco will hit 70s for tomorrow. 66 tomorrow. i will leave you with a look here at the afternoon highs. we have 67 for pacifica tomorrow. 78 in areas like oakland. 88 for concord. tomorrow is expected to be the warmest day. we actually have a cooling trend as we get toward the first day of summer. i will line that up for you coming up. you've probably seen them, they burn bright every night

the woman who was partying with 49ers quarterback kaepernick before somehow winding up at a hospital in miami has somehow filed a complaint against miami police. the woman is claiming that police tampered with her toxicology and rape results. as we told you , police refused

he's on the off ramp now coming up the off ramp at sunset. it was broadcast live nationwide on tv 20 years ago tonight millions watched the surreal slow speed police chase of a white ford bronco over l.a. freeways. one time football great and hollywood actor o.j. simpson was supposed to surrender to authorities after being charged with the murder of his ex-wife nicole brown simpson and her friend ronald goldman. but instead he took off. the slow speed chase lasted for 90 minutes with simpson's friend al halings behind the wheel. the bronco then drove to simpson's estate where he was

arrested. a jury found simpson not guilty. a civil trial followed. now simpson is serving a 33 year sentence for kidnapping in a sports memorabilia case. he is scheduled for parol in three years. a fundraiser to keep the bay bridge lights on. right now more than 28,000l.a. lights shine. that display is scheduled to stop in less than a year. jana katsuyama in the city tonight with the effort that's being made now to keep those lights on until 2026, jana. >> reporter: frank, this light sculpture has gotten attention from across the united states. if you take a look at it it always changes every time you see it. but unless they get funding all of these lights are going to go

off permanently the next month. during the day, the bridge looks the just the way it has for the last 77 years. but at night it shines. transformed by the artist. >> i look out here and it's great. >> i went out for a walk and it's nice to have the lights. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a temporary installation. >> by this time next year the lights will be gone. >> reporter: now there's a fight to keep them on. restaurants say the bridges added bling have boosted business. >> when the lights first went up we saw a 15 to 20% increase. >> reporter: it's even inspired a bay light cocktail. but keeping the art work would require taking down all 25,000 energy efficient l.e.d.s so caltrans can repaint the bridge then restringing new lights meant to last longer.

at a cost of $12 million through 2026. >> you know the cost is for the most part that extraordinary job of people hanging out in the middle of the night on the side of this bridge. it's not an easy installation to do. it takes months of time. >> reporter: davis says other costs include insurance and maintenance and the new lights would be just as energy efficient costing about $30 a night to power the entire light sculpture. if they get the funding they hope to have the new lights restrung in time for the super bowl weekend in february 2016 and caltranss has agreed to help with the maintenance. the bay lights organization is hosting a crowd funding campaign tomorrow and they hope people will pitch in to try to keep this light sculpture up. reporting live in san francisco, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. changes may be coming to the u.s. postal service in san francisco following a 2 investigating story we told you about last night. we reported about an audit from the office of the inspector general that showed thousands of dollars in recyclables being

thrown out in the trash. the director of san francisco's department of the environment was surprised to hear that nearly 2/3 of the material that was found in postoffice dumpsters could have been recycled. she's now offing to help train postal employees and the postal services has taken her up on the officer. representatives are working on a meeting to find a solution. the city of oakland unanimously passed a resolution opposing the shipment of fuel by rail through the city. transporting products such as crude oil and coal by rail is hazardous. they pointed to the accident in quebec that left 37 people dead. coal dust that flies from railcars can get into people's lungs. the ride sharing companies oober, lift and others may soon have to contend to new rules.

the defense began presenting its case in the civil lawsuit over the beating of brian stow. the former paramedic suffered permanent brain damage when he was savagely attacked in the dodger's parking lot on opening day of 2011. a security expert testify had the the police presence on opening day was one of the largest he had ever seen. but a former l.a.pd lieutenant said that there should have been more security in the parking lot and that the

enough to keep the hospital fully operational. it'll still have to scale back and cut a majority of the jobs. doctors medical center provides most of the emergency care for west contra costa county. federal officials are asking the food industry to go easy on the salt. the food and drug administration is preparing voluntary guidelines asking food companies and restaurants to lower sodium levels. it's an effort to help prevent deaths from heart disease and strokes. the move has been in the works now since 2010. the agency says americans eat about 1-1/2 teaspoons of salt every day. that's 1/3 more than the government recommends for good health. how about this, the republican governor of texas says he loves california. that might sound odd given the fact that rick perry has been trying to lure businesses away from california arguing that texas has lower taxes and fewer regulations. he also angered a lot of californians when he compared homo sexuality to alcoholism.

a newly retired marine returned home today to a surprise that moved him to tears. volunteers and friends came together to show their appreciation for the more than 20 years of service to his

country. ktvu's john sasaki was there for the emotional reaction and homecoming. >> kitchen was redone, painted. >> reporter: we took a walk through of a sassoon city home that would be a big surprise for a newly retired marine. >> he's a pretty emotional guy. i imagine there'll be a lot of tears. >> reporter: the tears came quickly when jack bernardo arrived because he didn't recognize his home. >> we did it for you. >> i don't deserve this. >> reporter: after retiring from the marine corp., he and his family returned from okinawa japan. >> 21 years i've been serving my country and if i had 21 more years to give i would. i love this country. >> reporter: as you can see from these photos it needed a lot of work. daughter jessica had her doubts. >> at first i said, are you sure you want to fix the house.
