"mornings on 2" starts now. we're live in the oakland hills this morning, where residents and firefighters are on heightened alert. a series of suspicious fires caused quite a scare yesterday. ktvu's tara moriarty has been talking with fire crews this morning. coming up in two minutes, what crews are doing today to try to prevent a repeat of yesterday's fires. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, tc. >> good morning. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, i have sunshine on my shoulder. >> well, i can see that, dave. yes, it will be sunny for all. a little warmer. it won't last among. by friday, we're back in a cooler pattern. today looks to be the warmest day of the week. we had 7080s yesterday. today we bump those up.

a lot of coming upper 80s. near average to slightly above. inland temperatures should be close to 85, 86. today they will be a little bit above. some fog but it's down in monterey. that's about all we can find. 40s and 50s. i think we'll move out fast. 46 half moon bay. one of the few that's left. but there were a few 40s this morning. already 50s and 60s. san jose state meteorology department at 60 degrees. just a whopper of a low. still churning up to the north and east of us. it's now east of us. and the wraparound did give the sierra nevada a little bit of rain last night. for us, sunshine and warmer temperatures. today will be the warmest day. a couple of 90s inland. way below for some, slightly above for some. here's sal. all right, steve. i want to mention that the 7:00 a.m. vallejo ferry to san francisco is bus service instead. if you are just arriving there soon, you will see the buses lining up just like we did the

other day for maintenance. let's take a look at the east shore. right here, the traffic here, a 26-minute drive. the buses will have to gauche kate between the carquinez bridge. not too bad. if you are driving in the east bay, southbound 880 traffic is already going to be slow. by the way, that bay bridge time is about 25 minutes. 880 southbound between 238 and fremont is about a 27-minute drive. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. multiple suspicious fires break out in the oakland hills over a period of four days. two columns of smoke from first spotted yesterday afternoon in the canyon along park boulevard. a third was seen shortly after at the top of the canyon. two others were reported last friday. ktvu's tara moriarty is at the scene, where fire crews are still watching out for any incidents. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. the fires are still under investigation. we're waiting to hear back from

the battalion chief to find out whether they are officially being considered arson. but along park boulevard, we have a couple of rigs that have been stationed throughout the evening, keeping an eye, making sure that hot spots don't re- ignite over here in diamond canyon. a video from newschopper2 shows two columns of smoke visible around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. aircraft dropped hundreds of gallons of water to fight the fires. hand crews snapped out flames in the thick vegetation. yesterday, there were five fire total. it was the two in the conditionian that raised the most -- canyon that raised the most suspicion. >> the two in the canyon were half a mile apart from each other. for the amber to catch another part of the canyon on fire, it's very suspicious. >> reporter: just last friday, two more suspicious broke out in the hills -- fires broke out in the hills.

there are a lot of homes around here. so the potential was high. we're supposed to be speaking with someone from the fire department within the next 15 minutes. hopefully we'll have an update coming up at 8:00. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. yesterday, suspicious fires are alarming for people in the oakland hills who survived the 1991 firestorm. this is video from back then. 25 people were killed and more than 3,000 homes destroyed in that blaze. yesterday, people who live in the area say as soon as they saw the firefighters and the smoke, they began packing up. many people were grabbing scrap books and hard drives. after the '91 fire they learned if you wait, you could lose it all. a woman tossed her valuables on top of her bedspread and wrapped it up and dashed out the door during that fire. another fire in antioch came dangerously close to several homes.

it started about 7:30 on pawnee drive between inteeian hill and pru -- indian hill and pruitt ranch drive. a block away from a school. no homes were damaged. the flames were 60 feet high. it burned fences and trees. one person was treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters stayed out there for several hours watching for hot spots. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a 12-year-old boy hit by a car in san francisco, an ambulance was out an an unrelated -- on an unrelated call when paramedics actually saw the car. it happened around 4:15 yesterday afternoon. the child was taken to san francisco general hospital with minor injuries. no word on what caused the crash or whether the driver will be cited. 7:06. an east coast doctor who once worked with the family of oakland teenager jahi mcmath has reportedly had his license revoked. the new york daily news reports that the doctor lost his

license amid accusations he had sex with a patient at a rehabilitation center in new jersey. the 33-year-old patient was reportedly recovering from a minor brain injury suffered after a car accident. he consulted with the family of mcmath. the teenager was pronounced brain dead after suffering complications from surgery. her family disputed the diagnosis and eventually won the right to have her moved to an undisclosed location where she remains today. the moraga school district has agreed to pay what is now the country's largest per student molestation settlement. according to the contra costa times, between 1994 and 1995, female students reported being molested by the then biology teacher. after an investigation into the alleged coverup, the district

is paying up almost $19 million to four women. witters was placed on leave in 1996 after more complaints were made. he died a few days later after driving his car off a cliff. the defense is presenting its case in the civil lawsuit over the beating of bryan stow. he suffered permanent brain damage when attacked in in the parking lot of dodger stadium. yesterday a security expert testified that the police presence that day was one of the largest he had ever seen. but a former l.a.p.d. lieutenant said there should have been more security in the parking lots and the lighting "could have been better." stow's attorneys claim security was lax and the attack could have been prevented if there were guards from the -- in the parking lot where the attack

happened. organizers need to raise $12 million for a fund-raising effort to keep the bridge lights on. katie utehs has more. >> reporter: most everyone agrees that the bay bridge lights are beautiful. but the set needs to come down so that caltrans can paint the bridge. that means a second set of lights would have to be installed which is most costly and tedious work. currently, there are 25,000 white l.e.d. lights strung along the cables of the western span of the bay bridge. those will come down early next year, and march. the estimated cost of restringing new lights meant to last longer would be around $12 million. that keeps the new setup through 2026 and includes insurance and maintenance costs. >> the cost is for the most part that extraordinary job of people hanging out on the middle of the night on the side of the bridge.

welcome back. 7:14. rescue teams in malaysia still searching for passengers of a ferry boat. it sank off the west coast of that country. the boat was carrying illegal immigrants from indonesia headed back home. at least 60 survivors have been found. but 32 people are still missing. five bodies have already been recovered. thousands of independent often go back on boats that are in bad condition. the state utilities

commission is did an audit that was prompted by the death of five women in a burning limo on the bay bridge. audits are not holding them responsible but they say the lacks leadership. >> once they begin the investigation, on average, they are taking 238 days to complete the investigation. >> the report also found that the cpuc lacks policies and procedures to ensure carriers comply with the law and that when citations are issued, they are for amounts much lower than the law allows. the cpuc largely agreed with the findings and says it will follow the audit's recommendations. happening now -- a congressional committee is re- examining how general matters

handled the recall of 2.6 million cars because of a problem with ignition switches. mary barra on the left and the independent investigator on the right will be questioned this morning about why it took so long to start recalling calls with faulty ignition switches and if the problem was covered up because of cost concerns. we'll continue monitoring this hearing and bring you more updates throughout "mornings on 2." 7:16. ride sharing companies like uber and lyft are aplau plauding an amendment to a state bill that they say could put them out of business. yesterday workers rallied as a senate committee heard bills aimed at regulating the companies. one bill would require ride sharing companies to carry $1 million in commercial liability insurance coverage. but yesterday, the author of the bill agreed to look into providing a lower coverage amount. a second bill is also being

debated. that one requires more extensive background checks for drivers. speaking of drivers, let's check in with sal. you said we're getting at the height of the morning commute right now, sal? >> we are. the traffic is going to be busy right now if you are driving on the eastshore freeway. i will put a map up first. west 80. you can see it's slow between hercules and richmond. you see the red spots and we'll show you the picture near the berkeley area. that drive time is 25 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. not too bad. but definitely not the standard 17 minutes that it is when there's no traffic. bay bridge, about a 25, 30- minute drive time getting into san francisco. but today, it does look like it's going to start improving. i can always tell by looking at the ramp coming in from 880 when that's not really a major slowdown, you start to see improvement. and 880 in oakland, the traffic

art experts in washington, d.c. have found a new painting by picasso. they used infrared technology to scan the blue room. this is one of his earliest masterpieces. beneath the finished painting, they found a previously unknown portrait of a bearded man resting his face on his hand dressed in a jacket and bow- tie. they don't know who the man is but they are sure it's not a self-portrait of picasso. they are hoping this will help them learn more about what pick sauce co was thinking about his career. >> he's 19 and seems to be searching for a style, a -- something that will help him stand out. >> now, this is not the first time a picasso painting has been found beneath his work. there's another portrait found under the painting titled "woman ironing." 7:21. a split-second decision. >> the first moment, i saw the

7:24. foul play is not suspected in the deaths of two female hikers whose bodies were found on mt. tamalpais just days apart. the deaths originally sparked fears that a serial attacker might be on the loose in the area but investigators determined there is no connection between the deaths. the body of 33-year-old magdalena glinkowski was found april 12th. the marin county coroner's office said she died of hypothermia. officials say she was unfarm

with the area -- unfamiliar with the area and unprepared for a long, solo hike. five days later, the body of 50- year-old marie sanner was found. investigators say she apparently tumbled off the trail and suffered a head injury. they say she was hiking after dark and was unfamiliar with the terrain. they also say she had a blood alcohol level of .12. the plan to expand yosemite national park has become a political battle on capitol hill. democratic senator, dianne feinstein, is behind a measure to secure the largest expansion of yosemite since the 1930s. but republican congressman tom mcclintock of miree po saw county is -- mariposa county says he does not truck the national park service which is the federal agency that would be in charge of those expansion plans. this may be one of the stories of the day. a newly retired u.s. marine now back in the north bay and the surprise he came home to left

killed. police officers responded to a reports of shots fired at 100th avenue and international boulevard around 4:00 a.m. police say the victim was shot at least once. she was pronounced dead at the scene. so far no arrests have been made. we have a crew on the way to the scene. we'll bring you more details of what happened as soon as we get them in our newsroom. privacy concerns are being raised big brother is watching in fremont. the fremont city council just approved a plan to install traffic surveillance cameras and license plate readers. janine de la vega is in fremont. you are talking to people on both sides of the issue. >> reporter: good morning, dave. so far it's a mixed reaction. some people like this idea. others say it will be a big waste of money. fremont police say most people who commit burglaries don't live in the city. that's why they are gonna

install the cameras at the city borders. at last night's meeting, members approved spending $300,000 to buy and install 12 cameras and license plate readers and 12 different intersections. many have installed their own cameras and have captured cil activity and it's help -- criminal activity and it's helped police make arrest. we spoke to people who live and work in fremont about the plan. here's what they had to say. >> i think it will help because, you know, if it's helping as far as bring the rate down and leading people to getting convicted, i'm for it. >> i think it's a violation of our privacy. i mean, being watched all of the time. it's too big brother for me. [laughter] >> reporter: and privacy is a concern that the american civil liberties union brought up at the meeting. others think it might lead to an abuse of power. but the police chief says the information collected from the

system will be stored for a limited time to ensure it's not misused. the city still needs to pick a manufacturer for the cameras. back out here live, we're here on mowry avenue, right at the entrance of northbound 880. that's one of the intersections where the camera will be installed. you won't see it get installed until next year. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. the aclu is arguing that license plate readers may not be reliable. the aclu says in 2009, san francisco police drew their weapons and pulled over a woman because the license plate reader misred her license -- misread her license plate. the woman had been handcuffed but had to be released 20 minutes later when police officers realized the mistake. should police officers wear video cameras? the issue has been studied for

the past year. the police department favors cameras about the size of a tube of lipstick that can be worn on sunglasses. police are eldwhoing a -- holding a public forum tonight at 6:30. 7:36. authorities are reviewing security at the federal building in downtown oakland after a disturbing discovery. someone fired a bullet into the building on clay street. agents spotted the bullet hole during a routine check ergty saturday morning -- early saturday morning. luckily, the building was empty. it was near a judge's office. >> we're gonna look at and see what security enhancements we can do to the exterior of the building so this doesn't happen again. >> investigators don't believe

the judge was targeted. they say the bullet may have been fired during a shooting early friday about a block away from the federal building. the lawyers for the surviving boston marathon bombing suspects are due back in court and are expected to ask the judge to move the trial out of boston. they say intense media coverage has made it impossible for their client to get a fair trial in the city where the terrorist attack took place. he could get the death penalty if convicted of last year's bombing that killed three people and injured hundreds of others. new developments in iraq this morning. a terrorist group moving closer to the capital city of baghdad. this morning the group known as isis's trying to take control of a city 40 miles north of baghdad. they are trying to take control of an oil refinery. there are conflicting reports

about that refinery. there are some reports saying it's already under the control of the militants. the iraqi military, however, says it has retaken control. well, today president obama meets with top congressional leaders about that situation in iraq. that group includes senate majority leader harry reid, mitch mcconnell, house speaker john boehner and nancy pelosi. they are expected to talk about the situation in iraq and what further actions if any should be taken. 7:38. san jose city leaders are considering asking voters to raise taxes. the measure could appear on the ballot as soon as november. brian flores is live in san jose to let us know how officials would spend this extra money. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we are getting mixed reaction from residents here in san jose. recently the city council approved to spend about $50,000 to gather residents' reaction on how they would feel about

the potential tax measure. we don't know the wording of the questions. here are some of the things that san jose residents need to consider. will voters approve a jebel sales -- general sales tax increase where the money will be collected in a general fund or would voters rather see the money go towards a sales tax that would benefit fire or police services? voters will -- will voters approve a tax increase? they hope to gather the data before councilmembers make a push to put a sales tax measure osh the november ballot. residents we spoke to are mixed. >> as long as the money is going for something worthwhile, you know, government -- you give them money and it may not go where you want it to go. >> i'm not opposed to it. >> i've lived here all my life. it would make the city better. >> reporter: right now the sales tax is at 8.75%. a quarter-sent increase would provide an additional $34

million annually. a half-cent would increase it. a lot of this depend on whether there is a strong support for the sales tax increase. we're live, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. a new report says yahoo! beats google. it's one of the few silicon valley companies led by a female ceo. but it shows 37% of its employees are women. only 23% of its leaders including the ceo, marissa mayer, are female. 15% of its tech workers are women and a breakdown by race is even less diverse. just 2% of its u.s. work force is african-american.

4% is latino. tesla's ceo says it's probably tougher to create an inexpensive long-range electric car battery than it is to go to mars. last night, he says he feels good about teas law's chances of coming up with a mass market electric car in the next three years. he also says he hopes to see humans on mars by the year 2026. he's hoping for a self- sustaining city on mars which would make it less likely that humans will eventually die off. we have breaking news. a landmark decision involving a controversial sports team name. the washington post is reporting the u.s. patent office has canceled the trademark registration for the washington redskins. the patent office reportedly calls the team's name, quoting here "disparaging to native americans." without the trademark, anyone who wanted to sell merchandise related to the team could use the name without permission.

the redskins owner, daniel snyder, has said he would not change the name of the team even if he loses this trademark case, which he just did. native-americans and civil rights groups have been pushing the team to change its name for several years. it may be lights out for one of the bay area's biggestland marks. in -- biggest landmarks. the effort kicking off to keep the bay bridge sparkling for years to come. the president said they are innovators. up next, pam coomb will tell us about the students -- pam cook will tell us about the students and entrepreneurs at the white house. and the east bay traffic still busy, especially original the east shore and on parts of the nimitz freeway. we'll give you drive time and alternate routes to get around. sunny for all. temperatures a little cool for some. the nights are so short, it won't take long to start warming up.

monterey. temperatures started off cool for a few. that 48 is old. they are not updating half moon bay day airport. 50s and 60s. livermore, low 60s. fairfield is almost 70. pittsburg is in there as well. 67, walnut creek, 58. la fayette, 56. orinda, 56. for some, 50s. others it's not taking long to warm up. it will be in the 90s. just an absolute impressive system but it's moving east and out of california completely now. sunny and warmer weather. warmest days we just touched on a few 90s inland. it looks like after today, temperatures will start to come down a little bit. but today a lot of sunshine coast, bay and inland. we have traffic that is busy still in many area. i want to start off with a look at the eastshore freeway on the map that we're gonna go to first, there's a lot of red there between hercules and richmond down to the berkeley area and then you can see for yourself here in berkeley, it eases up. but the drive time is 32 minutes between those two

spots. bay bridge, that traffic is backed up for about a 20, 25- minute delay. we are seeing some improvement on the toll plaza commute. as a matter of fact, there have been a little bit of slow traffic once on the bridge. 880 southbound and also 92 and 84. the core of the bay area commute especially 880 southbound is very slow. as you drive down, your drive time is 38 minutes between 238 and thornton avenue. it's 8:03 back to the desk. in total seven fires have popped up over the past four days in the oakland hills. tara moriarty is at the scene where she just spoke to a deputy fire chief. good morning, tara. >> reporter: the deputy chief says they are eager to catch whoever is responsible. all night and all morning, crews have been stationed here along park boulevard looking down into diamond canyon to check for flareups.

luckily, we've seen no action this morning. we take a look at this video from newschopper2. this was taken from yesterday afternoon around 3:00, you could see the two columns of smoke. aircraft drops hundreds of gallons of water to fight the fires. meanwhile, hand crews snapped out flames in the thick vegetation. yesterday, there were five fires total. three main fires and two spot fires. fire officials say there was virtually no wind so suspicious for an ember to fly a half a mile to catch another part of the canyon. crews say they are facing incredible challenges this summer. >> we're challenged to keep this area managed from a vegetation perspective. so really we -- to have people purposely start a fire is just so criminal. >> reporter: just last friday, a short distance from here, two more suspicious fires broke out in the hills. no one was hurt. no homes were bushed but of course, there are a lot of homes around here so the potential was high. again, the fire department is asking anybody who lives in

this area to be extra vigilant and keep an eye out and definitely report anything or anyone you consider suspicious. we're live in the oakland hills, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. and yesterday's suspicious fires are alarming for people in the oakland hills especially those who survived the 1991 firestorm. this is video from that disaster almost 23 years ago. 25 people were killed and more than 3,000 homes destroyed. it was hard to escape because there was such narrow roads. yesterday people who still live in the oakland hills say as soon as they saw the fires and spoke, they began to pack up. many were grabbing scrap books and hard drives after the fire, they learned if you wait you could lose it all. flames in antioch shot 60 feet in the air last night. quick action from firefighters protected several homes. the fire started around 7:30 on pawnee drive between indian hill and pruitt ranch drive,

prosecutors say 3-year-old carlos nava was caught in the crossfire of a gang feud when he was shot and killed on international boulevard nearly three years ago. the two suspected gang members on trial for the child's death could spend the rest of their life in prison if convicted. the morongo school district has agreed to pay what's the country's largest per student molestation student. according to the contra costa times, between 1994 and 1995, female students reported being molested by then-biology teacher daniel witters. they say the school administrators ignored their claims and did not report them to police. after an investigation, the district is paying out almost $19 million to four women. witters was placed on leave in 1996 after more complaints were made. he drove his car off a cliff a few days later. audrey's law, it's set to go before state lawmakers once

again next week. yesterday, they delayed a vote on that measure. supporters say they need to take some changes to win over critics of mandatory sentencing. now, the bill is named after audrey pott, the saratoga teenager who committed suicide after she was sexually assaulted while she was passed out. three boys texted photos of the crime to their classmates. this law would require a minimum two-year sentence for teenagers convicted of sexual assault against a victim who is incapacitated. 8:08. happening today, a fund-raising effort to start today to reinstall the bay bridge lights which are scheduled to be taken down by march. $12million needs to be raised for the project. katie utehs is live to tell us why a lot of those people think keeping those bridge lights on is a bright idea. the bay bridge dazzles at

nighttime. people we spoke to want it to shine on. they were unphased by the $12 million projected price tag of the new lights. starting today, the group is asking people to donate in an effort to replace lights on the western span of the bay bridge. caltrans need to take the current 25,000 l.e.d. light installation down so the bridge can be painted. the new lights would be energy efficient and should last until 2026. part of the $12 million cost would be for the tedious installation and necessary maintenance. people walking the embarcadero this morning say it's a justifiable expense. >> yeah, i say go for it. it's private, you know -- it's taken from the city's funds to help the homeless or something like that. don't do that. if it's private, do it. >> i enjoy the light. i'm sure it brings a lot of people out there. >> it's such a beautiful part of the city when i come to visit it. i think it's one of the most

get them in. 8:31. privacy advocates in fremont warning big brother is watching. the city council there just approved the plan to install travel surveillance cameras and license plate readers. janine de la vega has been on this story all day. you are at one of the locations where a camera is going up. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this proposal did generate some controversy. some people don't like being watched. but police say that the cameras do help in their investigations. now they are gonna have them installed near city -- near the city's borders. like right here at 880 and mowry. they say most people that commit burglaries don't give in fremont. last night the city council approved spedding $300,000 to buy and install cameras and license plate readers at 12 different intersections. many people who live in the city have installed their own security system with cameras and they have captured criminal activity on video.

it's helped investigators make burglary arrests. but the american civil liberties union worries expanding surveillance will have have consequences. >> if people don't want their picture taken, they have that right especially when he then doe know it's being taken. that's an invasion of privacy. >> i don't have any problem with that. i don't have anything going on but going to work. i'm a working citizen. >> i know a lot of people are worried about the police abusing their power. i can see that, too. but, you know, it's just a matter of finding out it's the costs outweigh the benefits. >> reporter: the chief says this will reduce the city's burglary and robbery rates. he know the information will be stored for a limited time to ensure it's not misused. the cameras and readers are slated to be installed next year. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. well, hayward police want to hear from the public.

they want to know should police officers wear video cameras. the issue has been studied by the hayward police department for the past year. the daly review newspaper says the police department favors the cameras about the size of a tube of lipstick. tonight at 6:30, a public forum will be held at the northern district office on main street. another meet something set there on june 26th. the police department will ask the city council to approve that plan next month. 8:34. a 12-year-old is recovering after being hit by a car in san francisco. an ambulance was on an unroo he lated call near 24th and valencia when paramedics saw the crash. it happened around 4:15 yesterday afternoon. the child was taken to san francisco general hospital with minor injuries. there's no word on what caused the crash or if the driver will be cited. the defense presenting its case now in the civil lawsuit over the beating of giants' fan

bryan stow. the former paramedic suffered permanent brain damage. he was attacked in the parking lot of dodger stadium in 2011. now, yesterday, a former major league baseball security expert testified that the police presence at the ballpark was one of the biggest he had ever even. a former l.a.p.d. lieutenant said there should have been more security in the parking lot and the lighting could have been better. stow's lawyers claim security was lax and the attack could have been prevented if there were security guards in the parking lot where the attack occurred. authorities are reviewing authority at the federal building in downtown oakland after a disturbing discovery. someone fired a bullet into the building on clay street. federal agents spotted the bullet hole during a routine security check early saturday evening. they say the bullet passed through a judge's chamber on the second floor before coming to rest in a jury room wall. luckily, the building was empty at the time.

the incident has many people wondering why the federal building is not bulletproof. >> we're gonna look at it and see what enhancements we can do to the exterior of the building so this doesn't happen again. >> investigators do not believe that the judge was targeted. they say the bullet may have been fired during a shooting early friday morning about a block away from the federal building. we are continuing to follow a story. the u.s. patent and trademark office has canceled the washington redskins' trademark registration. brian flores is live at the new levi stadium where the washington team will take on the 49ers later this year and also tell us what this means for football. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the -- making that decision this morning, we are live here in front of levi stadium where the redskins will play the niners on november 23rd. before then, this decision by the patent office may not affect whether the team will

change its name. it could have a huge impact on merchandise sales. the report was first reported this morning. the u.s. patent office has canceled the trademark registration for the washington redskins. what this means, anybody can sell merchandise using the redskins' logo. no longer will there be restrictions. before you would have needed permission. what's unclear is the impact it will have for the team. teams make money on merchandise. there could be an impact there. there's beenarded pressure from -- there's been added pressure from native-american groups to have them change their name. they say the decision does not require the trademarks in the involved registrations to be changed or no longer used by the washington, d.c. football team. daniel snyder says he does not plan to change the name even if he uses the trademark case, this includes six trademark associations with the name redskins. the team lost a similar case back in the 1990s.

welcome back. 8:43. let's bring you up to date on some of the top stories -- as we're speaking root now, a fire -- right now, a fire is burring in the big basin state park northwest of santa cruz. it's near highway 236 at the back of the park. calfire is there both on the ground and in the air.

we just found out the fire has burned at least three acres. so far, no evacuations have been ordered. we'll keep you posted. oakland firefighters think several recent fires in the oakland hills were deliberately set. seven of those fires have popped up in the past four days. no property has been damaged. no one has been hurt. the firefighters are telling people in the area stay alert. immediately call 911 if you see anything suspicious. there is a new report that if the san jose sharks can't rework their local tv deal, this could affect whether the sharks stay in the bay area. the mercury news reports the contract only pays the sharks $7 million a year. other hockey teams get five to six times that. 8:44. happening now -- the white house is hosting its first ever maker faire. pam cook is in the studio to explain the significance of this kind of fair.

lawn this morning. earlier in the year in san mateo, science students went out, science teachers loved maker faires because students play and watch and they may not realize that they are learning science, technology, ecnearing and math -- engineering and math. some of the locals are at the white house, include a 13-year- old from central california who created an electric learning platform. those are pictures outside the white house lawn at today's event, president obama will announce some new steps that the administration and partners are taking to make sure that more people have access to these tools and technologies to bring their ideas to life. often these technology and ideas -- >> i think i heard there was a maker faire that created a devis for credit cards.

street. the east bay m.u.d. crews were so busy trying to contain this mess they couldn't fill me in on the details. here's what we've observed in the last five or so minutes. it would appear they have the water turned off. it looks like they are now pumping the mess out of the hole where the water main is presumably broken. there are four or five east bay m.u.d. crew members here on scene. they've got a backhoe. where i'm standing is actually wet, the middle of the road. there's debris throughout the road. it would appear this puddle was quite large at one point. you can see that car, the tires there have a little bit of debris and the roadway has some flooding along the side as well. the east bay mud crew says they've been on scene for about an hour now. i think it's fair to assume that the water is probably turned off and the houses along ashby are without water. it's unclear how long it will take them to fix this line and get water back up and running.
