12:02 pm
lantana drive where there's still a lot of emergency crews here. from newschopper2, you can see the flames shooting up in the air from the two homes located in a neighborhood near reed avenue. it all began at 9:20 this morning and the flames continued to rage for more than an hour as firefighters worked to extinguish them. when they first arrived on scene, they tried to fight it from the inside but heavy flames and smoke made the firefighters back out. it was causing the roofs of the homes to start sagging. they quickly pulled out and had to fight the flames from outside. tree trimmers working from the neighborhood first spotted a flame and alerted the people inside. >> fire, fire, no response. pounded on the door. no response. help hollering. finally they opened the door and i ran inside and told them about it. >> it's really tragic and unexpected. kind of like a bad dream, really. >> reporter: now, inside the home that operated as a daycare, there were five
12:03 pm
adults, there was a baby, and two cats that all escaped from inside that home. no one was inside the other house that caught fire. but neighbors keep telling us that two dogs inside died as a result of the fire. fire captain did just tell us that one dog, a dalmatian, is unaccounted for. it was a chaotic scene while neighbors watched in disbelief as the smoke consumed their neighborhood. one of the homeowners got on his roof with a house because he was afraid his home would also be destroyed. did the firefighter say get off? >> yeah, they kept saying i would be arrested for being on the roof. i said i wanted to hose my house down. they said they are gonna arrest me. we'll see what happened. >> reporter: at this point, fire officials don't know what caused the fire. it appears it started in between the two houses. once the firefighters are able to get inside and start their investigation, they will have

12:06 pm
there. >> reporter: fire crews have been out patrolling the area. they will continue to do so into the evening. for oakland hills residents who remember the fire in 1991, add's scene was a reminder about what would have happened. >> i lived here when the firestorm happened and saw all of the equipment and our neighborhood was next to be evacuated. that's pretty scary. after that we put a steel roof on our house and hoped that that will be enough. >> reporter: the diamond canyon fire is only two miles from where the '91 fire happened. last week, crews were out here battling two more suspicious fires around the same area. as we take it back out here line, you can see the sign -- live, you can see how high the fire danger is. crews will be out here again patrolling the area, they are urging any witnesses to come forward. we're live in the oakland hills, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a pedestrian was killed by a caltrain in mountain view this morning which brought trains to a standstill. but one track has just
