this bay area golf course. how the drought is driving efforts to conserve. ktvu channel 2 news is -- starts right now with breaking news. >> a small plane crashed near the livermore airport killing one person. that is the breaking news we're following right now. good evening, everyone. thanks so much for joining us for this post-game edition of ktvu channel 2 news. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. the crash happened about 5:00 p.m. near the north livermore exit off interstate 580. debris from the plane scattered across a ridge top, and some of it continue smolder at this hour. patty lee is near the crash with what investigators are saying right now. >> we are at north livermore avenue about half a mile from 580. you can see over my shoulder these charred pieces of what remains of that plane. sergeant j. d. nelson is here

with me now. he arrived here on scene a few minutes after that crash where you arrived to find a fire? >> right. we had a situation where the plane took off from the livermore airport. the plane very quickly went into some sort of duress. the pilot either jumped out of the plane or was forced out of the plane and shortly thereafter, the plane crashed in the field, and that caused about a two-acre fire. >> so you have found the pilot jumped out, and his body is over that hill behind the plane, and you said that was the right thing to do most likely. >> well, you can only imagine the situation that he was in. we have witness that saw smoke coming from the plane so his plane most likely is on fire. he's in a situation where he knows that plane is going to crash, and he -- he wanted to get away from that fire. it's an absolute terrible tragedy. >> is there any way there was a second person in that plane? >> we have nothing that leads us to believe at this point there was a second person in the plane. the plane was completely demolished. the pilot's body was found about

start and had how it became so destructive. as ktvu's john sasaki tells us, today was a day for those victims to assess the damage. >> the smoke has cleared, revealing the damage comes by yesterday's five-alarm fire in the cordelia part of fairfeechltd >> we thought our house was gone. that's what we thought because we couldn't see anything. it was a really horrible experience. >> as we reported live at 5:00 and 6:00, the fire jumped across 680 to the northeast where it raced through a neighborhood. >> it kicked it over here, caught this whole field on fire. >> john is repairing his fence that partly burned up. his home was spaered. the fire bypassed this lot leaving this building untouched on the other side of this gravel driveway, another home was burned to the ground. >> i don't know how it missed this garage here, but it came around the back and just lit it up. >> corker and stepbrother and

his wife lost their home and maybe a pet. >> i just came to -- to see if i could find their cat really because they got the dog out, but couldn't find the cat. >> across a blackened dirt field, a home that survived mostly unscathed, but a fence and storage building were destroyed. >> all my stuff was in there. all my -- my wife's -- also, her business, everything was in there. >> the cordelia fire building also caught fire briefly. the fire chief says quick work by about 100 firefighters and an unknown newspaper reporter kept the fire from causing more damage. >> he was helping pull lines around and applying water to the fire but also on the structure for exposure control. >> the fire burned five acres, destroying the one home and four out buildings. investigators are still trying to find the cause. >> it's in an area where there was lots of cigarette butts so was that the start in we don't know. >> one person was injured, a

firefighter who stepped on a nail. in fairfield, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. >> firefighters in the east bay today turned out for a three-alarm grass fire that was threatening several homes. the fire started about 1:45 this afternoon off linda road near castro rafrnl road. fire officials said flames were spreading rapidly, and 15 inch engines around the scene. the fire burned about 12 acres before it was controlled about 4:00 this afternoon. a shed was badly damaged. there is no word yet on what started that fire. almost a dozen people are without a place to live tonight after a fire in berkeley. it started shortly before midnight in a three-unit building on martin luther king jr. way near dwight way. firefighters say ten people were displaced by the fire. no wub was hurt, but neighbors said the experience was indeed frightening. >> i grabbed the phone to call 911, then i grabbed -- i wake up my kids and ran out of the door.

we went out already. >> firefighters estimated the damage there at about $300,000. there's no word yet on what caused that fire. well, there is word from las vegas that a bay area man has died there during a raid. the clark county coroner's office confirms that 24-year-old montgomery of san leandro died at a hospital shortly after 6:00 this morning. now, the cause of his death has not yet been released. he attended what you're seeing right here is the electric daisy carnival. that's a three-night music festival at the las vegas motor speedway. organizers estimated last night's opening. las vegas police today said five people were taken to hospitals from the festival, but there's no word if those cases were related. police also said they made 29 narcotics-related arrests. golf courses around the bay area are typically kept very green, despite the drought we're going through, but one east bay golf club is setting the standard to try to conserve

water. ktvu's christina rendon explains how much they plan to save and why they're taking extreme measures. >> when driving up to the golf club at roddy ranch in antioch, you may notice a different color surrounding the course. changes are in full swing to roll out a new campaign where brown is the new green. >> if you do see brown spots out in the golf course, that's the rafrnl being responsible. >> general manager kevin fits jerrold say it is drought is impacting everyone. >> we decided if the homeowner has to do it, why shouldn't the golf course have to do it. so, again, we took it upon ourselves and join sides with them and do what's right. >> the club plans to reduce their water usage by 30%. they're doing that by replacing rye grass with drought-resistant bermuda grass on the driving range and focus on the greens, tees and fairways. the impact will be minimal on golfers like john johnson. >> we can't control waterfalling, but we can control how much we use so it's not a

problem. >> brothers bill and joe brown are embracing the brown grass, too. >> that ball goes further when it's a little bit harder so we both cannot hit it with the long ball so this enhances our score. >> fits jerrold says the integrity of the course won't be compromised. he hopes the club can save about 40 million gallons of water this year. he says it's equal to about 300 homes, sxepts other golf courses to take a shot at implementing water conserving efforts that are up to par. >> every golf course in the country, not the bay area or california, should be doing their part to save our natural resources. sdpr depending on the success of the grass change at the driving range, they could incorporate that into other areas of this golf course to save more water in the future. reporting in antioch, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco landmark lombard street closed to traffic for parts of the day today after complaints from neighbors about all the congestion. known as the krookdest street in the world, lombard shut down at

noon today. visitors could still use the sidewalks. people who live in the area, though, say that the congestion has worsened in recent years, creating a traffic jam right outside their homes and making it pretty difficult to get into their driveway. some tourists we spoke to today were sympathetic. >> i can understand that. i mean, i know it's a tourist attraction, but these are paem's homes, too. so to have cars going down there all the time, i guess it would get a little annoying after all. >> other people, though, they don't like the idea of being shut out saying it's a tourist attraction and that people in the neighborhood should expect the attention. they're experimenting with these road closures the next four wiek ends. the san francisco chronicle reports the u.s. department of education approved a plan from the accreditation commission allowing it to review the advances the school has made in the past year. the accreditation commission is expected to give final approval next week. all right.

time for us to check in with our meteorologist mark. pretty nice out there today, mark. >> yeah. we have some kind of clouds gathering. [ audio difficulties ] >> oh, here we are talk about the forecast for today. as heather said, it was pretty nice out there. although we cool things off a bit. temperatures down a good 10 to 12 degrees from yesterday's readings. still 80s to report inland. take a look at the highs from this afternoon. they range from the lower 8 #50s in livermore and on the yak to the cool 50s out toward pacifica. san francisco topped out 60 degrees. you can see what happened over the past few hours. a big batch of high clouds move across the bay area. those clouds have moved out. right now wif patchy fog trying to regroup near parts of the coastline. i think that the fog bank will gradually increase in court -- coverage. winds are around 10 to 20 miles an hour. here is our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge. still a little bit of a chop on the bay water. for tomorrow, morning fog.

a bit of a warmer forecast. and the forecast for tomorrow for day 3 of nascar out toward the sonoma reyesway, looks pretty good out there. it will be warmer tomorrow. temperatures on track to reach the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. the extended, more clouds, definitely a big drop off in temperatures. we could be tracking the chance of a few scattered showers, but that chance will be approaching the bay area, as well. overnight lows to start out your sunday morning, most areas in the low to mid 50s. cool spots up in the north bay. upper 40s out there. here's a forecast model showing you the clousd, the low clouds developing late tonight into early tomorrow morning. here we are at 5:00. the clouds go back to near the shore line. temperatures there only in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. lots of sunshinen land. those readings back up into lower 80s for afternoon highs. the weather pattern for tomorrow, high pressure trys to return. with that sunday, monday, tuesday, a little bit of warmer forecast primarily away from the immediate coastline. here's the change for the extended forecast.

this cool weather system moves in. definitely more clouds as early as wednesday with possibility of drizzle and temperatures dropping off, as well, for that time frame. as far as shower chances, look at this. we'll put this into motion through monday, tuesday, wednesday. some drizzle. then thursday, the chance of some showers primarily up to the north of the bay area up toward cape mendocino, and there's that chance of getting to approach the region by friday. it's still a ways out, but the forecast models at least bringing in clouds. cooler temperatures. bringing on the chance of few scattered light showers. forecast highs for tomorrow. santa rosa 83 degrees. fairfield 84. these numbers a bit warmer than today. oakland 71. some clouds in the morning becoming partly cloudy for the amp. san jose forecast in the upper 70s. gil roy mid 80s and san francisco, there's that 65 degrees. pretty cool for beaches. look ahead, your five-day forecast will warm things up a little bit for sxhond tuesday, having to hold things off on wednesday. we'll have to keep an eye on

looking to get english-speaking youths. last monday, a 22-year-old recruit from florida became the first american suicide bomber in syria. a big welcome tonight for a bay area medic who is returning home after serving in afghanistan. 21-year-old ryan rafini landed at san francisco airport earlier tonight. he was met by his family and the patriot riders as well as members of the usa. rafini served in afghanistan with the 2nd calvary regiment. his family says rafini treated troops who had been injured by ieds, others wounded by a suicide bomber and still others hurt in a helicopter crash. his grandmother says she's incredibly happy to have ryan back home safely, and the family says it's praying for the safe return of all military personnel who remain in harm's way. >> nice to see him back. well, maverick's surf contest getting a new makeover. the new maunagement partnership is taking over the big wave surf
