. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. a pilot jumps from a burning plane, and loses his life as plane comes crashing down not far from an east bay airport. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello everyone i'm heather holmes. an investigation is underway right now, following that tragic plane crash this afternoon in livermore. it happened around 5:00 this evening near the north liv morexit off of interstate 580 when the plane came crashing down it also spark a small grass fire at the scene of the accident. for more on developing story we turn to ktvu's patti lee, joining us live in liv morwith

what investigators are telling you tonight about the accident are. >> the county coroner left with the body and can officially identify the victim and break the news to his family. the wreckage visible from the road. >> i don't know the full story and it's sad and sad for their families are alameda county sheriff investigators got part of the story from winters who described a plane on fire in the air. sergeant nelson said the pilot's troubles started shortly after taking off from the livermore airport. >> at some point the pilot jumped out of plane or was porsheed out of the plane just prior to it crashing into the hillside in livermore. >> reporter: nelson says looking at the wreckage, it's clear that pilot could not have survived the plane crash and as terrifying as it must have been, exiting the burning plane was the pilot's best option. >> the pilot was killed instantly when he landed in the

field about 300 yards from where the plan ultimately landed. >> reporter: aviation sources tell ktvu that the plane that crashed was likely a kit plane, similar to this one, a will be 4 replica of a world war ii fighter plane, but instead of metal, the frame is made of wood, the swin fabric, which is consistent with what investigators found among the debris. the faa still needs to determine why this plane caught fire? that requires combing through the wreckage and that will take more time. live in livermore, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now, authorities describe that plane as an experimental mustang. according to the company's website the mustang can handle short field and reach a maximum speed of100 miles per hour. one of the options is a parachute. there is word from las vegas that a bay area man died

there during a large reave. clark county coroner confirms that 24-year-old montgomery tsang of san leandroo died this morning. the cause of death has not been released. tsang has attending a three- mite music festival at the las vegas motor speedway. organizers estimated 134,000 people attended last night's opening. las vegas police say five people were taken to hospitals from the festival, but there is month word if those cases were related to tsang's. police say they also made 29 drug-related arrests. a pursuit tonight ended anyway crash at treasure island this evening. a drive of a honda civic was near the old bay bridge structure. the chp told ktvu david stevenson that the car was stolen and when they were approached the driver took off for treasure island. 26-year-old

fire bupassed this lot, leaving this building on touched. on the other side of this gravel diveway another home was burned to the ground. >> i don't know how it missed the garage, but it came behind the back and lit it up. >> corcoran and his wife lost their home and pet. >> they got the dog out, but we couldn't find the cat. >> reporter: across a blackened dirt field, a home that survives unscathed, but a work building was destroyed. >> all of my work stuff was in there. all of my wife's also her business, everything was in there. >> reporter: the cordelia fire building also caught fire briefly. the fire chief says quick work about 100 firefighter and unknown newspaper reporter kept the fire from causing more damage. >> he was able to pull lines around and not only applying water on the i fire, but on the structure for exposure control. >> reporter: the fire destroyed one home and

four outbuildings. investigators are still trying to find the cause. >> it's in an area where there is lots of cigarette butts. was that the start? we don't know. >> reporter: one person was injured a firefighter who stepped on a nail. florida, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters in contra costa county worked quick will to control a 3-alarm grass fire before it spread to any homers this afternoon. officials say the flames spread quickly, threatening homes and because of those conditions and other firefighters in the county, mutual aid had to be called in from neighboring communities. >> not only did we have the vegetation fire, but two fires in the central part of the county and that takes five engines each. so we don't have a lot of resources to throw at the fireerly ourselves. >> a total of 15 engines responded and had the fire
