the coast guard makes yet another daring rescue after a participant in a challenging race signals that he's in trouble. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. the 65-year-old man was plucked from the pacific ocean by a coast guard rescue team. he was taking part in an inaugural race when he was signaled in. patti lee joining us live from sfo where she just talked to

them about the latest daring rescue, patti. >> reporter: so far five racers have had to be rescued by the coast guard crews out of this station. the great pacific race is describing itself as the biggest, baddest endurance challenge in the plant. and so far out of their contestants only seven remain. >> reporter: the 65-year-old experienced rower was 5 miles away when he had to be rescued. and the second involved getting these two rowers out of the water. the starting line of the race is in monterey. the finish 2,400 miles away in

honolulu. the race has strict safety requirements and the coast guard says rescued rowers were prepared. >> all three devices played a key role and were essential to a quick recovery. >> reporter: you could hear the coast guard helicopter landing. they were out on another rescue earlier tonight. none of the five men who had to be rescued suffered major injuries but we have learned that boward did suffer a chipped rib and chipped shoulder blade. according to his son, boward was upset because he had to leave the race and leave his boat behind in the pacific. patti lee. a 15-year-old boy is dead tonight. and three other people injured after a shooting at a party that was packed with teenagers

store. it only burned about 2 acres. firefighters say they seem to pop up daily in the tall grass. they're planning to do a contained burn in that area. a fire in concord burned several homes and displaced several people. fire officials say the home is a total loss. residents of that destroyed home were not home at the time and no injuries were reported the cause is under investigation. new developments tonight in the search for a missing southern california firefighter. eight days after michael heardman and dog duke went missing, searchers found his dog alive. the off duty arcade ya firefighters disappeared while chasing his dog as it ran off

nic robertson, baghdad. israel called the ground attack intentional. the 15-year-old boy and two others were wounded in the attack. they may be victims of syrian's civil war. they fired on five positions including it headquarters. the tension in iraq appears to be pushing gas prices a bit higher. the average price of gas rose 2- cents a gallon in the last two weeks to $3.71 nationally. and although some san francisco prices are closer to $5 a gallon than $4, the survey found that chicago had the highest average price at $4.15 a gallon. an industry analyst blames the rise on threat to iraq oil production in the midst of those insurgent attacks. federal authorities tonight cancelled plans to fly 300 undocumented immigrants from texas to southern california. it's not clear though why those flights were cancelled.

to those who have fought for lgbt, and women's rights. it's a rotating display on loan, the bible that belonged to martin luther king jr. medical examiners have not yet determined if the body is that of missing 70-year-old hiker karen sykes. sykes is a wilderness enthusiast. on wednesday, she and her boyfriend took on a hike. at one point they decided to separate. when she did not return to their planned meeting point, her boyfriend called police. the three were picked up at a condominium.

the three were in a jail yard when a helicopter came down and took them away. when they raided the condo, the escapees were sleeping. hope solo was scheduled to appear to face assault charges. the goal keeper was arrested yesterday on suspicion of assaulting her sister and 17- year-old nephew. she's facing two counts of fourth degree domestic violence assault. solo was at a party in seattle and would not leave when things got violent. police say she was intoxicated and upset when they arrived. >> it's very disappointing. because she's the face of the u.s. women's team. for someone with that influence is doing something like this, it's pretty sad. >> reporter: the soccer player is not guilty of any crime but in fact, a victim of the altercation says her representatives. a plastic surgeon and his daughter went after three men who had apparently broken into their home. the suspect's reacted by

family and friends o -- of a san jose man killed in a motorcycle accident will gather tomorrow to try to raise money to pay for his funeral. that accident happened monday when a big rig collided with a motorcycle. azenith smith spoke today with that victim's devastated family. >> i can't explain to you the feeling that i fell.
