a hotel. a 16-year-old prostitute has come to this room. he is not a business man and she is being watched and monitored on hidden camera. >> i negotiate the price. make sure we have an agreement. >> reporter: always sad and surprised when the girl who knocks is so young. >> i don't have no -- no choice. i don't have no help. >> reporter: young enough to be turned around. maybe saved from the sex trade. like adult prostitutes she is frisked and questioned. she admits she didn't come to the hotel on her own. there is a pimp. >> after they open up they usually break down. as soon as they start talking

they start crying. >> reporter: this run away escaped abusive foster care. many are from broken homes. easy prey for sex traffickers. >> they look for pimps for attention, love, and they give it to them. they believe they are in love. >> how young have you seen? >> 12, 13. >> counselors find one bust doesn't usually do it. sometimes it takes something violent, a beating, a rape. often there are many tries at intervention. >> they try it and then they will go back to the lifestyle. you have to see them a few times before you get through to them. >> there is people who care about you. we care about you. >> why would you care about me? >> we don't want to see you do this. >> reporter: this 16-year-old went on to juvenile hall and working with a group trying to get her life on another track

and she wasn't the youngest. there was a 15-year-old girl as well. adult prostitutes are offered services too but they often have criminal records. all the more reason to get girls out early. debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now on operation cross country. the fbi joined with state and federal law enforcement partners across the country. they conducted sweeps in 106 cities. 168 children were recovered and 281 pimps were arrested. today the fbi director said targeting and harming american's children through sex trafficking is a heinous crime. every child weavers be safe and sound -- deserves to be safe and sound. boy shot and killed over the weekend was just 15 years

old. it happened early sunday morning. he was shot and died at a hospital. three others were shot and are expected to recover. the gunman was a african american male who fled in a blue compac car. series of arsons have police on edge. in the last two weeks south of market district seen 7 small fires ranging from construction sites togarbage dumpsters. -- to garbage dumpsters. ktvu's david stevenson has gathered some details. >> reporter: two newspaper racks were set on fire saturday night. a construction site and a trash bin were tet on fire on sunday afternoon -- were set on fire sunday afternoon and evening. it shows the proximity of the sights and the times they were set on fire. this is the latest on a series

of small fires. there are two other fires. one involving a car set on fire in a garage that they are investigating. no one has been hurt. this is the damage we viewed today at the construction site where new apartments. police tell osbottle was set on fire -- us a bottle was set on fire. last week two dumpsters were burned a block or two away on the same street. the fire department is investigating along with the police department. >> the fear would be that once someone gets hit -- one that someone gets hit or killed and two the fire gets out of control and does a lot of damage. >> reporter: police are working to connect the dots to see if the fires are related. we are told numerous construction sites have beefed up security and police are

grateful for the jury. for the time and attention they paid and i am -- my thoughts and condolences to all the victims. >> reporter: carlos nava was walking to the store with his mother and brother on august 8, 2011 when he was hit and killed by a stray bullet. she knows one of the gang member whose was also shot and wounded in the hail of bullets that killed carlos nava. the boy is now memorialized in a murial in the place where he died. -- murial in the place where he died. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: we saw many young families walking to the store, just as carlos nava was. >> just a sad thing. i would hate to be the parent that has to face a tragedy like that. >> the carlos nava family was not in court to hear the verdicts. i spoke with carlos nava's cousin who said there is

nothing to say, that the convictions don't change anything. he said my cousin is still dead. when they are sentenced july 22 each faces life in prison. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. a former elementary school school teacher is -- school teacher is atrial accused of molesting students. ktvu channel 2 news took still pictures in court and joseph martin smiled. he is charged with 150 counts of lewd acts involving 14 children over 7 years. two brothers are among his accusers. >> i really wanted to have the boys know there was no shame attached to any of this. that the same is on the person that caused these acts. >> most of the allegations are events that occurred in the classroom in front of all the other students. in other words there were 30 eyes on him while he is doing this.

we have the other students testify. >> if convicted of all 150 counts he could be sentenced to 2,000 years in prison. the medical examiner identified the man struck and killed last night by a lightning rail train. he was hit around 9:00 p.m. last noth at southwest express way. -- night at southwest express way. he was walking a dog and the dog got loose and he ran into the passport of the train trying -- path of the train trying to get to the dog. the dog was not hurt. the sheriff's office is trying to return a stash of stolen items to their owners. they found the stolen property with the suspect last week inside his home. they were able to track him down after he used a stolen computer to make a online purchase.

while deputies searched his garage several neighbors noticed items that were stolen from their homes. >> they just came and took their bikes. one guy was upset and took his bike. >> he is charged with burglary, possession of stolen property and a probation violation. the people behind a parking app used in san francisco are told to stop. san francisco city attorney issued a cease and desist demand to monkey parking. it allows people to auction off parking spaces. he also wants apple to remove it. he says it is against the law in san francisco to buy, sell or lease public on street parking spots. fireworks are about to go on sale ahead of the 4th of july. with the drought making it dry, some think selling fireworks is not a good idea. >> back here after the break.

july two weeks away. the sale of fireworks in some cities now just days away. some residents worry about fireworks. even with the legal ones. ktvu's rob roth talked with residents and firefighters and joins us live. >> reporter: legal fireworks here in dublin go on sale saturday, this is one of 16 stands in town that will be selling them. some residents say given the dry conditions selling fireworks this year may not be a hot idea. >> reporter: san francisco has its own 4th of july show. but not dublin. for decades people here have been allowed to celebrate with safe and sane fireworks. the money goes to charities and youth programs. some say take a look at the hills. drier than normal because of the drought and they worry about a fire.

fireworks. >> reporter: dublin is one of 15 bay area cities that allow the sale of fireworks. there are rules. fireworks could only be set off in designated areas. firefighters are urging everyone to be especially careful this year. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. california's drought continues to create fall out. they warned people to conserve now or face mandatory rationing. the san francisco p.u.c. says without significant cuts water could run out in two years. they are rolling out tv ads urging conversation and spending millions to increase recycled water in open space areas and drilling four new wells. there is one good thing coming from the drought, it is slowing down the death of sudden oak death. it is down in the past couple

a puppy found himself in a tight spot. look at this. firefighters say the puppy was stuck with his head through had hub of the wheel. the owner brought the guy a firefighter for help. they used vegetable oil and there he is, free from that pup. the pup is now back home with his 7 brothers and sisters. i think he will be the trouble maker. mexico is the headliner in the world cup today and panic arrived with the giants but it is a good thing. mark will explain next in sports.
