the golden gate bridge is world reknowned for its beauty but a decision tomorrow will change its look forever. good evening everyone i'm mike mibach. >> i'm gasia mikaelian frank and julie are off tonight. since it opened the golden gate bridge has seen 100,000 people jump to their death. now the bridge district is about to vote on a net to avoid suicide. this is a rendering. if the council approves the

cost, the net will cost about $76 million and take three yearlings. debora villalon live in napa after hearing from two men who are intimately aware of the bridge's dark side. >> reporter: gasia, one man who jumped, one who has prevented hundreds of people from jumping. now they speak together on suicide prevention. a 2007 documentary provided sharp focus. cameras trained on the bridge captured people climbing over the side day and night. a 25 story fall almost certain death. except for the ones talked back from the brink. >> it's such a big deal to get them back over that rail. it's easy to jump. it is. you just let go and there you go. >> reporter: kevin briggs saw it first hands over 20 years with chp, he became known as the guardian of the golden gate. stopping hundreds of people

lots of popular shopping boutiques. two people hit tori burch mostly women wearing bright clothing and wearing head scarves went in last monday. they ransacked the stores grabbing purses, wallets and handbags. workers told us they weren't authorized to speak about the incident. but security guards at other near by stores told us off camera they believe they're part of the rainbow robbery girls. young people swarm stores and make off with expensive purses and other goods. many businesses have added layers of security. >> we're seeing private security guards in some of the

more luxury boutiques here. both in union square as well as madden lane. we do have luxury products here so we're an easy mark to a certain extent. we need to be vigilant when it comes to ourselves and our merchandise. >> reporter: these rainbow girl type of thefts are a regular occurrence around here and have been for a few years and it's pushing up the cost of doing business for everyone. they say something more needs to be done. live in san francisco, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the south bay where a senior postal inspector now named federal inspector of the year has been arrested. police arrested quan howard yesterday. he faces one count of destroying u.s. mail. a complaint filed in federal court accuses howard of stealing rare coins, silver bars and $5,000 in cash.

he was named federal employee of the year in 2012 by the san francisco bay area federal exec -- executive board. athletic director sandy barber is going to be replaced and the university is going in a new direction. 54-year-old barber has been cal's director since 2004. in her 10 years she oversaw the renovation of the stadium but came under criticism after a report found that less than half of cal student athletes have graduated. a news conference is set for tomorrow afternoon. the university is expected to announce an interim director possibly a former cal athlete. a jury of six men and six women have begun deliberation in the case of stow versus dodgers.

stow's attorney says the dodgers were innocent because there wasn't adequate security -- were negligent because there wasn't adequate security. >> you know the only thing stow was doing is he was wearing a jersey, a black one that said giants. >> all these medical bills he has had and will have, responsibility rests with them. >> reporter: stow's attorneys are asking jurors for about $50 million in damages to cover his medical costs along with punitive damages. police in san leandro are investigating an attack on an innocent bystander but one of their police dogs. the mother of a 21-year-old man sent photos to ktvu news which she says shows her son's injuries. the incident happened last night. officers were called to bancroft avenue where they spotted the group of suspects. police say the canine was in

pursuit of the suspect when the dog mistakingly attack and bit the bystander. authorities say they stopped to help the man. they caught and arrested three suspects last night. the fourth was arrested this morning. new details about a deadly air show crash. ktvu's john sasaki on the coroner's findings and questions. >> reporter: eddy andrini spent half his life impressing air show crowds around the world. but on may 4, the crowd at the travis air shore saw andrini crash upside down on the flight line. >> eddy was a very safe individual. he had excellent equipment, it's just one of those things that happened. >> reporter: but now lieu

an attorney looking at taking legal action. saying the results of the office saying he died in a fire increases the likelihood of a lawsuit. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. you will remember in april, a teenager climbed a perimeter fence and hid in a wheel well flying all the way to hawaii. a memo says the airport is now reviewing operational procedure walking the perimeter to look for spots where security can be improved and looking for technologies to help beef up securities at critical locations along the airport perimeter. >> many technologies out there but those technologies they're expensive and we are determining what will work for our airport specifically. >> airport officials are calling for an increase in the federal passenger facility chart to cover the cost of new

security measures? the united states men's soccer team is advancing despite a loss to germany today. hundreds of fans turned out to watch the match at san francisco civic center plaza. u.s. fans say they're happy just to make it to the round of 16 after competing in one of the toughest groups. team usa will now play belgium on tuesday in the so called knock out round. sports director mark ibanze will have much more ahead in sports. a major announcement is expected on harding's park. the announcement will confirm the pga championship is going to be held at the revamped course. official word is expected next wednesday. the trend continues, ag land disappearing all over the

homelessness today released a report about where it stands. amber lee live in the city where she tells us this is a clearly a problem that is difficult to solve, amber. >> reporter: mike, this 34 page report talks about the successing of the city's plan to end homelessness and what it still needs to do next. >> reporter: the wait to get into a shelter even on a june night can take hours, but this homeless man says the way to get into permanent housing takes much longer. >> i have been waiting for years. i've been waiting for case manage -pl and tape -- case management and they tell you they can't get ahold of you. >> reporter: abee has been homeless since his business went out of business. >> you don't have an income, you can forget about getting any where. you're going to stay homeless. >> reporter: the city's homeless count done once every

two years has remained largely unchanged roughly 6,400 since 2011. >> we have a situation where due to the reception we had a ton of people losing work. as a result becoming homeless. and then after that we had a big tech boom. >> reporter: a tech boom that advocates for the homeless say many people have been pushed out into the street. >> the great recession is a measure of success. >> reporter: the 10 year plan had a goal of creating o -- creating 10,000 units for the homeless. this measure will bring it to 2,700. this single homeless mom was given a tour of an apartment. two years of homelessness coming to an end. the city also tellless her it will help her with her goal of

becoming a nurse. >> my kids are going to be so happy. >> reporter: city officials say they have recently received $3 million in state funding that will be used to prevent homelessness and provide more housing. advocates say the city's focus should remain on creating permanent housing. live in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. we're learning more about a woman killed in oakland tuesday evening. she was the aunt of oscar grant. the young man killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer. the grant family tells us she was 46-year-old lemedrian grant. a man was also shot and wounded. grant's sister says her family is taking her death very hard. >> we have five kids, seven grand kids, she's a sweet lady. everybody call her tank. >> the family is asking anyone

with information about her death to tell police what they know. a violent attack on a san jose store clerk is caught on tape now police are hoping the footage will help catch the attacker. something caused the customer to snap and then go on a rampage. >> reporter: this surveillance video captures a customer behind the counter holding a bottle of whis can he -- whiskey and puts it into his pocket. before you know it he starts throwing bottles of alcohol including the jack daniels. the clerk fighting back with what appears to be a stick with a metal object on the end. >> this is a travesty. what's going on? he's behind the counter, wow. >> reporter: the visit corrode is 43 seconds long but sheriff deputy say the confrontation lasted a good two minutes. what you don't see the robber had already been behind the

counter and had been throwing bottles moments before. also the violent gets worse at the end. >> the next part, the clerk is pushed today the ground and the suspect is on top of him hitting him several times. >> reporter: another customer breaks up the fight, the robber gets away with cigarettes and alcohol in hand. >> we'ved asked around our department. we've never actually seen a liquor store robbery where the suspect starts throwing bottles at the clerk. that seems a little extreme. >> reporter: the video is just as alarming to customers. >> i've never seen anybody rob a store for alcohol. >> that's very shocking, you can ruin your life, go to prison or jail just for a case of beer. >> reporter: the best tool to catch this criminal is this video. we're told the clerk had minor injuries and did not have to go to the hospital. azenith smith. >> here's another look at the suspect. described as 5'8", 180 pounds.

as many as three dozen people were injuredded -- injured today in a home in texas when a second floor collapsed. it happened today in katy.

the people were in the home for a religious celebration. flight 370 took off march 8 but soon veered off from its charted course toward beijing. it flew south over the indian ocean. now search coordinators have narrowed the area. a location is based on the plane's so called handshakes with satellites. new details in the arrest of a suspected arsonist in san francisco tonight we hear from the man who tippedded off police. as ktvu's david stevenson found out it was a chance encounter at an opportune type. >> reporter: police investigators say that the man seen in this video is angelo dejorano. he's accused of setting at least eight fires since late

may, early june. including this one that burned a car. >> i know it's him. from looking at his video and looking at his face. >> reporter: police posted video. >> i said wait a minute this place. >> reporter: sam habash was viewing that video with stead darvish who manages a condo near the site. >> we were watching, he just happened to be walking right down the street. and i said, wow. let me watch him where he's going. >> reporter: jarvish called the police. the two watched later on when police arrested him not far from the site of the car fire. >> we were going up the hill kind of carefully behind him. there was a number of plain clothed policemen that surrounded him and seemed to go off without a hitch.

health clinics that offer abortions have been a flash point in a long national debate. now the u.s. supreme court has stepped into the fight. today the justices rejected so called buffer zones outside clinic that are designed to keep women from being harassed. it is a case out of massachusetts. >> reporter: this clinic in hayward has put up fences like many others across the country and also a sign that says it is

against the law to block women. and the case could lead to other challenges of protest law. >> reporter: anti abortion activists celebrated the decision. >> the case was about free speech. this was about whether or not the abortion law, or really anybody in the government or any industry has the right to basically muzzle your free speech. >> reporter: planned parenthood says the justices decision issued the wrong -- in an attempt to protect patients. chief justin john roberts says the law was a violation of the protesters first amendment right. >> they were unanimous in a

most limited way. >> reporter: jesse chopper says while they agreed on overturning the law, some thought there could be some limits in order to protect patients. >> it was a bad drafted law okay. >> reporter: the ruling could have an impact nationwide on how clinics protect patients in the bay area, planned parenthood told ktvu they have seen protests from one to throe times a week. they do plan to review patient protection laws nationwide as a result of these rulings. reporting live in hayward, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel -- channel 2 news. and three clinics have buffer zones. it is unclear what this

decision will mean for them. herrera issued a statement saying that it is looking into what effect the rule has. the justices said president obama exceeded his -- melissa carlton delivered a healthy baby boy and now she's fighting to wake up. her husband and 1 -month-old baby boy west at kentfield are habilitation hospital. she's still in a coma but undergoing intense physical therapy. while her small victories are promising it's still unclear how conscious she is. >> i worry about how frustrating it is for her.

i worry about you know, what they're not painful, whether or not she thinks this isn't worth it to me. >> reporter: melissa's husband thinks time with their son is motivating for her. on occasion she holds his bottle and reaches for his hands and feet. a report showing california continues to lose agricultural land at an alarming rate. drought, and other organizations are to blame. >> there's no risk that this vineyard will be plowed under to make way for a new shopping mall, this land is protected under a unique plan here in livermore's wine country that has reversed the law of ag land seed elsewhere in california. the rolling hills of vineyards in the south livermore valley. they are as picturesque as they are vital. >> it's tough to grow grapes on

skyscrapers and concrete everywhere. >> reporter: mike claren is a wine maker. he's lived in this valley for for decades and has watched not the loss of ag land but growth. >> now we're at 12 vineyards where a few years ago there was eight. >> reporter: california lost 263 square miles of irrigated ag land between 2008 and 2010. that's equivalent to 5.6 times the footprint of san francisco of ag land lost. more than half of it considered prime farmland. >> my heart goes out for all this land that we're losing to agriculture. >> reporter: the south livermore valley plan put into place two decades ago is unique for every home built, ag land is preserved. >> at each house, is saving an

a fast moving fire forced evacuation. burning mostly pine trees, wind gusts at 30 miles per hour fanning the flames. firefighters are attacking it from the air and the ground. it's burning in the national forest near the fort apache reservation. that sink hole happened at bryant and alameda street while crews were testing the pressure of a 16-inch line used by the department. crews did some digging just to make sure there was no danger of a sink hole. the rode reopened a few hours later. the pipe that burst it's more than a century old and it's part of a 100-mile system of pipes built after the earthquake. the pipes carry the city's

auxillary line that helps to fight fires. >> we're actually happy to find this now rather than after. >> reporter: city officials say it would cost $300 million to replace all of thepipes. p i pes -- all of the pipes. the contract for about 20,000 long shore workers at 30 west port expires monday. a study says a 10 day shut down of port would cost the nation's economy $21 million and 169,000 jobs. tax between the union and pacific maritime association are expected to extend past the deadline but a work slow down is possible. u.s. olympic world medalist hope solo has taken to social media to address her arrest on domestic charges.

police arrested the goal keeper last saturday when she was accused of hitting her half sister and nephew. solo apologized to her friends and teammates but also said she expected to be cleared of all charges. >> former secretary of state hillary clinton spent this morning in san francisco meeting supporters and selling book. about 1,000 people lined up at the ferry building where mrs. clinton was selling copies of her new book hard choices. in it she talks about the four years as president obama's secretary of state. many of the people meeting mrs. clinton today say they hope she will decide to run for president in 2016. the provision phept to keep restaurant patrons safe is now

a marine county woman was charged today in connection with the theft of 130 bicycles and bike frames. the sheriff's department displayed the bikes outside their headquarters. deputies arrested rebecca hammond on suspicion of buying the bikes from various thieves. the sheriff's department says it will return the bikes to their rightful owner if the owner can provide a serial number or a specific custom i.d. marking. an east bay neighborhood breathing a sigh of relief. ktvu's cristina rendon talks about how the community and police worked to get some

neighbors to move out. >> it's not we're going to do something or something might be down, something will be done so this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: he says they documented years of escalating problems caused by the family until things turned violent. >> you have a little kid and you're diving for the floor in your own living room, because of all the shootings going on, it just, totally unacceptable. >> reporter: the council went to oakland police asking authorities to exercise the city's nuisance abatement ordnance. lieutenant courtman says it's the law for residents to keep their property nuisance free. >> as a group working together through city community who says we've identified a location that needed to be addressed. >> reporter: the owner sold the home and the people moved out to avoid facing a hefty fine.

has been pulled. a bill to regulate medical marijuana statewide moved forward today with approval from the assembly public safety committee. a key component is a bureau of medical marijuana association. the bill is now on its way to the appropriations committee. the pay raise will affect half of ikea's employees at 38 u.s. stores. researchers at the university of washington have discovered how vehicle exhaust fumes may exhaust pollination. the fumes can prevent several moths from finding the flowers they pollinate. moths are not mayor poll --

pollinators. if you can remember that far back we had a few sprinkles out there. overnight last night and a few this morning. very light .02 to .03 at best. it was slightly warmer today than yesterday but not much. temperatures below the average here. 75 in vallejo, 79 in fairfield. these temperatures will come from five to 10-degree. we're going to see a lot of low 80s tomorrow. a warming trend will come our way. and it's going to get hot around here. rain up in pacific northwest and northern california. we have seen up to a half inch of rain, maybe more than that up around the oregon-california border. great news for them. certainly up in the alps. the yellow arrows represent the -- you can kind of see the shaded areas in here. these are most likely high clouds. we have fog shooting across the

bay. there's going to be fog in most bay area neighborhoods tomorrow morning. your friday morning starts off mostly cloudy. and then temperatures start to warm. but the sea breeze is going to kick shut down a little bit. as this low moves on, friday is this transition day that starts the warming significantly. tomorrow it's come up five to 8 degrees. you will start to see some 90s. then the high firmly accomplishes itself. saturday is going to be nice really nice like mid-80s. and sunday the warmest day of the weekend we're going to see mid-90s in the warmest spots. then take a look at as we take a look at your bay area monday which no one wants to think about. you get the idea it's going to be 97. here at this point on sunday, monday, fire danger gets back on the table. we'll be talking about it a little bit. hopefully we won't have any issues. but you may expect something to pop up. we'll be keeping our eyes on that sunday and monday.

the 300 block of berkeley avenue. officers say they checked surveillance footage and the suspect was riding a white mountain bike. police say they may now have the man cornered a few blocks away on ashley avenue. mark ibanze joining us now. cincinnati reds in town for a few games. >> i will tell you the giants are down to two games west of the league. dodgers won and so much for timmy's no no getting the team turned around. turns out it was just a pleasant little distraction from the fact they are sinking like a stone in the west. as mike said reds in town. 1-0 lead. they keep it that way. a little pop up short right. it's joe panic, you know what billingham, not that fast. he throws him out with a nice one hop of a skip throw. and the out. 7th inning.
