expected in san francisco today. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. we are just a week away from the fourth of july and this is a live picture of a fire works stand in dublin that opens tomorrow. it comes as authorities in contra costa county made a big illegal fire works bust. tara moriarty is following this story. thank you for joining us i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check out weather and traffic. steve, how does it look? >> you tell me. >> i think it looks pretty good. i think you painted a nice picture. >> i did. thank you very much. we have low clouds that are making a nice charge inland. it will be slightly warmer. we have lost the system from yesterday. weak system just going into the north. but the leading edge of high pressure is starting to work its way in.

it won't be here until saturday and then it will warm up on the weekend. slight showers possible up in mendocino county and lake county. areas of fog to the north. sunny and breezy. maybe partly cloudies to the north. patchy coastal fog. 50s on your temps to start off. once that system goes by sunshine and warmer temps kick in. 80s inland. still slightly below average for many. 60s and 70s. coast and bay. we still have problems in solano county on 80 westbound. also a couple of crashes. now the road work is on the way to be picked up. very slow traffic through

fairfield once you get past highway 12 it does get a little better. just remember to give yourself an extra 5-10 minutes if you can. it is backed up for a 15 minute drive time. there -- if you are driving in the south bay northbound 101 traffic is moderately heavier. now let's go back to the desk. illegal fire works seized before they could cause damage. ktvu tara moriarty is in dublin with the details on how investigators first spotted the fire works. tara. >> you know there are only i want to mention 15 communities in the bay area that you can buy. this stand will be open for business tomorrow. if you are thinking about buying fire works that are not safe and sane, know they are banned in the state of california. last night law enforcement in contra costa county made a large bust of fire works off a

craigs list posting. officers uncovered 2500 pounds. three suspects are in custody. we'll have more details coming up later in the show. know there are a lot of cities even counties that have banned them all together. for example if i was to take a couple steps north into contra costa county, i would not be able to set off my legal fire works there at all. starting tomorrow through july 3rd you can only shoot them off from noon until 10:00 tonight. live in dublin i'm tara moriarty. a small fire forced 204630 people to evacuate an apartment in san francisco just after 3:30 this morning. investigators say a mattress

caught fire. possibly from a person that was smoking. a neighbor heard strange noises and a bang before it started. people that slack waited were able to return an hour ago. a south bay postal inspector arrested and accused of stealing mail. we haven't got an chance to talk to coworkers of quan howard. but the allegations in this criminal complaint are disturbing. let's go to a picture of quan howard who worked as a postal inspector at san jose. investigators say howard always told employees he supervised to notify him of loose items. and then he would go to a room

in a distribution center where he would staff the goods. he they have images caught on surveillance cameras. howard is facing two counts of mail theft, one count of possessing stolen mail and one count of destroying u.s. mail. according to the chronicle, howard was also a witness in the case against former san francisco supervisor ed yew and testified jew's regular mail went to burlingame not strength where he claimed to win. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >> time is 6:05.

new reports that a man shot last night in san jose is now in critical condition. investigators think the shooting may have occurred in the capitol park area around 8:00 p.m.. the unidentified victim went to the hospital on his own and was suffering from at least one gunshot wound. so far there are no suspects in this case. >> a final testimony is expected in the oscar grant civil trial. oscar grant's mother is sed jeweled to be among the last witnesses in the san francisco's courtroom today. her testimony will be shown to the jury in a video taped deposition. he claims mehserle intentionally killed his son five years ago. grant's father is currently in prison doing time for a 1985 murder. closing arguments were made yesterday.

bryan stow a paramedic from santa cruz that beaten three years ago suffered traumatic brain injuries. >> you understand the only thing that bryan was doing wrong is wearing a jersey. a black one. that said giants. >> responsibility for what happened to mr. stow and this condition he's in. and all of these medical bills he's had and will have. responsibility rests with them. >> the them the dodgers daughter -- stow's attorneys are seeking $50 million in damages to pay for medical bills. rainbow girls targeting high end boutiques in san francisco. last week 5-7 people hit the

union square fashion store. they grabbed purses, wallets and handbags and threw a worker to the ground that was trying to stop them. nearby shops believe it was the work of a rainbow girls. a group of african american women that wear bright and distinctive clothing. some union square stores have increased security. happening today the setup starts for one of the most recognized images of san francisco's pride celebration. at 1:00 this afternoon, volunteers will create the outline for the pink triangle display at the top of twin peaks. 175 pink tarps will make up the triangle. the nazis use triangles at concentration camps to identify. the group that is behind the pink triangle display says it should be seen as a symbol of hope and pride. another pride event is the

580 as you drive through. you will see traffic moving along relatively well. and your drive times are still pretty low between the altamont pass and the interchange about 23 minutes. let's go to steve. thank you very much, sal. very good morning. happy friday. we do have a little system that is skirting to the north. the north bay. it was a little bit of rain. i doubt too much happened there. mainly clouds. temperatures will start to warm up. we had our coolest day yesterday. and it will continue to ramp up here. probably next monday or tuesday and then we will get another cool down. between it will warm up. santa rosa 75 yesterday. we will go 80 today. a soft an even 80 today. san francisco is starting off with a lot of cloud cover. we will go 68 which is close to where you should be this time of year. 57 and 53 is the average high low there. the record 94, 1976. another way back on the low. 48 in 1893. we do have 50s on the temps.

they are running slightly cooler here. a couple of 60s. even pittsburgh, brentwood, antioch, low 60s out to oakley. 55 lafayette. walnut creek at 57. 58. there will be a breeze today. not as bad as yesterday. still gusts to 25 at concord. west at oakland. west at napa. and a little southerly breeze. not that strong but i expect it to pick up once that system clears and that fog retreats back. there is not a lot to this system but there were a couple little guy showers. 59 sacramento. watch this system goes by which will be today. pressure is on the way. there will still be fog but we are losing semblance of clouds. coastal fog staying cool to mild there. sunny and breezy. but not as breezy as yesterday. it will be hot for some. especially sunday into monday and probably tuesday. maybe the coast will be the

only place where there will be fog. coast will be in the fog bank today but clouds showers. a few to the north. not much. slight warmup today. these are still below average for this time of year. unless you are by the coast and bay. inland temps are running below. 90s. maybe some areas like vacaville near 100. general motors recalling another 29,000 cars. they are all versions of the most popular model. gm says some of its cruise cars have potentially defective air bags. they may not deflate in a crash or they could separate in a car and hurt passengers. they ordered dealers to stop selling all 2013 and 2014 cruises this week until it figured out the problem. online forum for engineers and inventors offering a trip into space as the top prize for a hackers contest.

san francisco harding park golf course about to make a big announcement. golf die jest magazine reports that they all host the pga championship in 2020. six years from now they have hosted several big tournaments featuring some of the stars of golf world since it was renovated in 2002. an official announcement expected next wednesday. time is 6:24. world cup fever is going to last at least a few more days for fans of the u.s. team. the u.s. advances to the

section on the home page. the centers for disease control are classifying what it means to be a heavy drinker. according to the cdc women are considered heavy drinkers if they have eight or more drinks a week. for men it's 14. a drink is considered five ounces of wine, 12-ounces of borings or 1.5-ounces of liquor. experts say the definition is different for women because they are typically smaller than men and more alcohol ends up in their bloodstream. the study says heavy drinking is the third leading cause of preventable deaths killing 10% of adults between 20 and 64. today the state will announce new rules on taxing food purchase from food trucks. right now food truck operators with include sales tax. starting next tuesday, july 1st, vendors should always include sales tax on all menu prices and they can change the prices at different locations because sales tax can vary from city to city.

good morning to you. welcome back. you're looking at a live picture. you recognize the golden gate bridge. there is a big vote today on the long debated suicide barrier for the golden gate bridge. coming up brian flores will show us how a barrier would change the look of this landmark bridge and also the big issues that still have to be figured out. stay tuned. good morning. welcome back. thank you for joining us here. ktvu channel 2 morning news. friday, june 27th i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. 6:30 is the time. steve has the forecast. pretty foggy out there. >> yeah for some definitely. it will burn off sooner. it's more of a fogback than a low cloud deck. there is some there. there is plenty there. areas of fog. clouds to the north. still partly cloddies to the north later on sunny to mostly sunny. some of that patchy coastal fog will be there. i know there is a few breaks in

it. 57 in oakland to start off. we will go 72 for a high in downtown. it will be slightly cooler or below average. low 60s for a few. 57 saratoga. gilroy at 55. there is our system. there is not much left of it. fog, sun, breezy. clouds more to the north. maybe a few isolated showers. but a slight warmup today after yesterday was the coolest day. 80s inland. 60s and 70s coast and bay. if you are just about to get out of the house, it's a moderate commute. we don't have any major problems out there as we start with highway 24. pleasant hill road to the caldecott you can see the traffic looks good in lafayette. a it's a little crowded as you drive through orinda but nothing much and your average speed is at 65. not too bad there. when you get to the toll plaza, you will see waiting going on. that about a 20 minute drive time as you drive through.

of course we are looking at one of the busiest commutes in the bay area. that would be 580 westbound. 580 at 205 westbound there was slow. nothing major as you drive over to dublin and castro valley. and santa clara valley still looks good at 101. northbound 85 traffic looks good into cupertino. the time is 6:32. let's go back to the desk. happening today a big decision about putting suicide barriers on the golden gate bridge. since the bridge was built, 1600 people have jumped off that span. ktvu brian flores is joining us live in san francisco with more on that big vote today aimed at saving lives. good morning brian. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this issue has been going on for several years. as many people know. you are taking a look at the beautiful golden gate bridge. very picturesque. but where is the line drawn on

whether to save lives or keep the view? that vote will be later on today. this is what the steel net suicide barrier would look like. it will be installed 20 feet below the pedestrian walkway and extend 20 feet out from the bridge. if somebody were to jump, the netting would make it difficult for somebody to do it again. it's meant to keep a person in the netting until help arrives. the issue is cost. at an estimated at $76 million to fund. we spoke to a man that jumped off the golden gate bridge. he says whatever that can be done to save lives should be done now. >> there has been 77 years of needless death there without action. it has been 77 years that families have sat in internal pain forever.

>> reporter: kevin heinz says he hasn't tried to commit suicide since and has written a book about prevention. he's led the campaign to installed the suicide barrier at the golden gate bridge. if approved it could be installed by early 2018. coming up on mornings on 2 hear from a former chp officer known as the garden of the golden gate. live near san francisco brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. berkeley police are searching for the person that opened fire on a man along a busy street. alex savidge has new information about the shooting victim. alex. >> pam, good morning to you. people who know this victim tell me they are surprised by what happened here last night. they say the victim is a family man with children who takes classes at berkeley city college. the shooting happened last night just outside of this liquor store. the victim was found in this area just behind the store where you still see there is

crime scene tape up. it happened just before 10:00 last night. people living nearby told me they heard at least five shots. police moved in and blocked off the area to gather evidence. police say the man who was shot is 38 years old and lives here in berkeley. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries although a neighbor that saw him being taken away tells me the victim was alert and talking as he headed off to the hospital. a friend of the victim who we talked with a short time ago can't understand why he could be targeted. >> i'm kind of surprised he would get shot because he does not seem like that type of person in a violent lifestyle. it was shocking to all of us. >> and just after the shooting last night, police learned the shooter was possibly hiding out around the corner from here just about two blocks away. and a number of officers moved into that area. they searched their homes and apartments but in the end they

could not find the person they were looking for. so the shooter still on the loose this morning. berkeley police trying to track that person down. at last check the victim remains hospitalized. he was taken away with serious injuries but a neighbor described himover being alert when he was taken to the hospital. berkeley police have not given an update on his condition. live in berkeley alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. meantime berkeley police have arrested a man in connection with a double shooting earlier this month. 22-year-old donzel was arrested yesterday. police are looking for durant. they say she should be considered armed and dangerous. there is a photo. anyone with information is asked to call berkeley police. new this morning concerns about fire works a week before the fourth of july.

we are learning about a stash of illegal fire works that were being sold on the internet. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live now in one of the few bay area cities that still allows the sell of personal fire works. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning. this was a reminder if you decide to buy or sell illegal fire works, you all get caught. the stand you see behind me here in dublin this is where they sell legal fire works starting tomorrow. it will be open for business. if you think about buying the type that are not safe, just know they are illegal statewide. last night they made a large bust of fire works off a craigs list posting opinion officers uncovered 2500 pounds more than a ton of illegal fire works in the east bay. three suspects are in custody. we'll have more details coming up later in our show. now if you are attempted to buy spinners or sparklers there are only a dozen bay area cities that sell the legal stuff.

so even though you may buy fire works in those communities, you are not allowed to set them off in other cities like san francisco, oakland, and san mateo. starting tomorrow through july 3rd, you can only shoot them from off through noon until 10:00. you do have to be more than ten feet away from any houses or buildings. if you are wondering if your community is safe and sane, we will provide a link to our website. live in dublin i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:38. san francisco police identifying the suspected serial arsonist believed responsible for recent fires. investigators say the man seen in this surveillance video is 47-year-old anthony baharano of san francisco. he's accused of setting four fires in the south of market area since late may including one in a high-rise apartment building that destroyed a luxury car. ktvu news talked to the two men that watched the surveillance video and called in the tip that led to the arrest.

>> we were watching. he just happened to walk in right down the street. and i said wow. let me watch where he is going. >> police were going up the hill kind of carefully behind him. there were a number of plain closed policemen that surrounded him and seemed to go off without a hitch. >> bail for the arson suspect is set at $1.3 million. a woman and her dog were killed after a crash in central california involving a tour bus from the bay area. it happened yesterday afternoon. the chp says the 60-year-old woman's car drifted into on coming traffic and hit the bus. witnesses report seeing the woman driving erratically before the crash. the charter bus was based out of fremont and carrying passengers back here to the bay area. no one on board the bus was hurt. this morning san jose police hope surveillance video of a violent attack on a store

clerk will lead to an arrest. the video was inside tiptop liquors last week and it captures a confrontation between a store clerk and a man stealing alcohol and cigarettes. at one point the robber starts throwing bottles at the store clerk but the clerk you see here he fights back. customers say the violence is disturbing. >> that is very shocking. that clerk suffered only minor injuries. but that robber left behind thousands of dollars in damage. look at that video. if you recognize the man, get in contact with the police. the uc berkeley sports program moving in a new

direction. athletic director sandy barber is expected to step down today after ten years in the position. she will remain at cal though setting up an academic program in sports management. they determined it was time for a change in leadership. a prominent alum and former student at let will be named interim athletic director later today. she is eight months pregnant but certainly not slowing down a northern california woman. coming up in a half hour we will tell you how this track and field star wow brought down the house at a stadium in sacramento. how she finished the race is just incredible. >> we're live in san jose where a postal inspector has been accused of stealing items in the mail. you'll hear from one of the mail handlers here on what his thoughts are of this latest development. >> and on this friday we are still look at a commute that is mostly good here in san jose and the santa clara valley.

welcome back. it's 6:44. a south bay postal inspector has been arrested for stealing mail. the list of what he's accused of stealing is extensive. janine de la vega is joying us from the main post office in san jose. where we just spoke to the worker to get his reaction. >> reporter: yeah he and others i just spoke to are alarmed that one of the the supervisors is accused of doing this. they say it's always drilled into them that the cameras are always watching and they are supposed to turn loose items they find in the mail. according to this criminal complaint filed in federal court, it says quan howard told employees to hand the loose items to him and then he he would go to a room in the distribution center and stash the goods. they include cash, prescription

pills, marijuana, passports, jewelry, rare coins, silver bars, collectible playboys and other memorabilia. postal workers that didn't want to be identified tell us that they looked up to howard and that he was the one that taught them what to do and whatnot to do during their orientation. >> shocking. glad he is gone. you know. they talk about honor and ethics. they drilled it into us for 30 minutes. this guy is over here stealing. that is horrible. >> he is facing two counts of mail theft, one count of destroying u.s. mail. according to the san francisco chronicle, howard was also a witness in the case against former san francisco supervisor ed jew and testified that jew's regular mail went to burlingame, not san francisco where he claimed to live.

if he is convicted he could face up to 20 years in prison. happening today for the third year in a row a dental office will offer free dep fall care today. lewelling dental care teaming up with a nonprofit group called kept industry from the heart. registration started at six o'clock this morning. services will go on until 5:00 p.m.. patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis. the office is hoping to help 75 patients today. we told you about a man that was stuck on beaches. now we are learning his story maybe just one example of a wide spread problem throughout the city.

it's still unclear exactly what the supreme court decision will mean for them. a busy san francisco street in the south of market area back open again this morning after a major water main break. it happened at 10:00 on bryant and alameda streets. and it happened while the crews were testing the pressure of a 16-inch line used by the fire department. the workers drained water from that intersection then they did some digging to make sure there was no danger of a sink hole. now the pipe that broke yesterday is more than 100 years old. san francisco's puc says it's part of a 100-mile warter system that was built after the 1906 earthquake. the pipes carry the city's auxiliary water supply which is used in emergencies. they are happy that pipeline problem was found now before the next big earthquake. an important vote is expected today to help keep the a's in oakland for at least the
