good morning. we are live in berkeley this morning right in front of a store where a father was shot last night. ktvu's alex savidge has been on the scene since 4:30 this morning. alex has been talking with friends of the victim, and coming up in 2 minutes, he's going to tell us why they're surprised and can't understand how this happened. good morning. thank you for joining us on mornings on 2. i'm pam cook in for tori campbell today. >> and good morning i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather and traffic. how's it look outside? >> some fog, gray skies, some sun already. some partly cloudy, especially to the north. it looks like bark worse than its bite. may be a few showers early but not too much. oakland forecast, we'll tart off mostly cloudy. 64 at noon, 72 for a high today. these are near average coast and way. inland temps a little below average. belows are running below. they were in the 60s yesterday for most. today mid to upper 50s. a little breeze but not that

strong. west at sfo, west at hayward. northwest san jose. a far cry from yesterday but it will be a puff of a prosthesis today. the system -- a puff of a breeze today. the fog gives away to sunshine, clouds in the north. some 80s inland but 60s 70s coast and bay. we're looking at a commute that is getting busier. we've had a couple of crashes pop up right in the middle of the morning commute. highway 4, this traffic does look good in antioch which is surprising for it to be that way this time of the morning. we'll take it. there was a minor accident westbound highway 4 near port chicago highway. that's not causing huge delays as traffic is slow there anyway. if you're driving on 80, also in contra costa from hercules to richmond, traffic is doing okay. it does get a little heavy as you approach the 580 interchange. marin county has been nice and quiet from san rafael to richmond, the other way around on that span and on 101 to the

golden gate bridge. bay bridge toll plaza, that's a 30 minute drive time into san francisco. most of the slow traffic is here at the toll plaza. then we look at the south bay. i want to check that out with a look at northbound 280 through downtown san jose. this traffic does look good. it has been light on 280 and 101 heading up to sunnyvale. at 7:02 let's go back to the desk. topping our news this morning, police are searching for the gunman responsible for a shooting near a berkeley liquor store. it happened last night on san pablo avenue near ashby avenue. alex savidge has been following this story since 4:30 this morning and has reaction from the victims' friends. >> reporter: good morning to you. one neighbor describes the victim as a family man with children who is taking classes at the local community college here in berkeley. he was shot last night near this liquor store here that's on san pablo. the victim was found in this area behind the store where you can see there is still some

crime scene tape up this morning following this investigation. it was just before 10:00 last night when people living nearby tell me they heard at least five gunshots. berkeley police moved in, they blocked in area off along san pablo avenue close to ashby avenue as they gathered evidence. police say the man who was shot is 38 years old and does live in berkeley. he was taken to the hospital with what were described as serious injuries, although a neighbor tells me the victim was alert and talking as paramedics took him to the hospital. a friend of the victim tells me this kind of violence is certainly surprising in this area. >> it was very disturbing because we don't normally get that type of violence in this area right here. it's pretty family oriented area. it's kind of shocking to a lot of people in the community. >> reporter: and right after the shooting last night, police learned the shooter was possibly hiding out just around the corner about two blocks away on ashby avenue. officers searched that area for

quite some time. in the end they couldn't find the person that they were looking for so they do believe the shooter's still on the loose this morning. berkeley police trying to track that person down. at last check, the victim does remain hospitalized this morning. we haven't been able to get an update on his condition from berkeley police. we're live this morning in berkeley, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> berkeley police have arrested a man in connection with a double shooting earlier this month, 22-year-old donzale mejia was arrested yesterday in oakland. he and 23-year-old anthony durant shot two men near russell and california street on june 11 june 11th. the victims have recovered from their injuries. police are still looking for durant. he should be considered armed and dangerous. anyone with information is asked to call berkeley police. time 7:05. there are reports of a man shot last night in san jose is in critical condition. investigators believe the shooting may have occurred in the capital park area about 8 p.m. the unidentified victim went to

the hospital on his own and had been shot at least once. there are no suspects at this time. testimony is expected to wrap up this morning in the oscar grant civil trial. oscar grant's mother, wanda johnson is due to be among the last witnesses in the san francisco courtroom today. the jury will hear her testimony in a videotaped deposition. oscar grant's father is suing b.a.r.t. and former b.a.r.t. policemen yoenis message early. he claims he killed his son five years ago. grant's father is in prison right now for a 1985 murder. jury deliberations have started in the civil case filed on behalf of giants fan brian stow against the los angeles dodgers. closing arguments were made yesterday. bryan stow a paramedic from santa cruz was brutally beaten three years ago in the parking lot of dodgers stadium by two dodgers fans and suffered traumatic brain injuries.

stow's lawyers accused the dodgers of being negligent saying there was not adequate security. >> you understand the only thing that brian was doing wrong is wearing a jersey, a black one that said giants. >> responsibility for what happened to mr. stow and this condition he's in and all these medical bills he had and will have, responsibility rests with them. >> the dodgers attorney referring to the two men who pled guilty to attacking stow. stow's attorney seeking $50 million in damages to help pay for medical bills. a hearing scheduled at 9:00 this morning in san jose. that's for the man suspected of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar. anthony garcia torrez has pled not guilty to the charges. a judge is expected to rule on a petition from the news media to unseal grand jury transcripts. sierra lamar disappeared while heading to school in 2009. new this morning, concerns

about fireworks. a week before the 4th of july holiday we're learning more about a stash of illegal fireworks being sold on the internet. ktvu's tara moriarty live now in one of the few bay area cities that still allows personal fireworks to be sold. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this stand here in dublin sells legal fireworks starting tomorrow. if you are interested in buying the kind that are not safe, know that they are banned statewide. last night law enforcement in contra costa county made a massive bust of such fireworks off a craigslist posting. officers uncovered 2500 pounds, more than a ton of illegal fireworks in the east bay. three suspects are in costty. we're going to have more details coming up later in the show. if you'd like to buy spinners or sparklers, there are a dozen bay area cities that sell the legal stuff like hollister, san bruno and pacifica. even though you may buy the fireworks in those communities, you are not allowed to set them

off in other cities. starting tomorrow through july 3 july 3rd, you can only shoot them off from noon until 10:00 at night. on the 4th you can use them until midnight. if you're wondering if your community is a safe and sane fireworks spot you can check it out. live in dublin i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. happening today, they're going to start setting up one of the most recognized images of san francisco's pride celebration. at 1:00 this afternoon, volunteers will create the outline for the pink triangle display at the top of twin peaks. 175 pink tarps will make up that triangle. the nazis used triangles at concentration camps to identify and shame gays and lesbians. the group behind the display says it should now be seen as a symbol of hope and pride. another popular pride event is the transgender march. that begins at 6:15 tonight at

dolores park. marchers will walk to the civic center area for the rally. the first march was held to honor a transgender teenager killed in newark in 1992. their goal is to spread tolerance across the bay and around the nation. at the bottom of the hour we'll have a live report on the preparations for this weekend's 44th annual pride celebration. at eight months pregnant some women can't even stand on their feet, but one professional track star is making headlines for completing a race. take a look at this picture of 28-year-old alysia montanya running an 800-meter race at the u.s. championships in sacramento, five-time national champion finished in 2 minutes 32 seconds while being six weeks away from her due date. she came in last in her heat but got a standing ovation. she did consult with her doctors before the race. not only did she get the okay but they encouraged her to run.

she's a graduate of u. c. berkeley. needles buried in the sand in santa cruz may be an indication of a more widespread problem throughout the city. yesterday we told you about syringes found on cowell beach. a group that logs the number of needles found all over santa cruz county tells us this is a much bigger problem. take back santa cruz says more than 5,000 needles have been recovered throughout the county. there have been seven needle injuries including three children. the group collects the data and report it is to the city council and the board of supervisors. time is 7:11. an ac transit riders you're going to see big changes starting next tuesday. the bus system will stop issuing paper transfers. they're going to replace them with an all day pass for unlimited trips. the cost $5. the fare for a single bus ride will also go down from $2.10 to $2. the passengers that use a clipper card.

san francisco's harding park golf course about to make a big announcement. golf digest reports harding park will host the pga championship in 2020. harding park has hosted several big tournaments featuring some of the stars of golf since it was renovated in 2002. an official announcement expected next wednesday. time 7:25. one oakland neighborhood breathing a sigh of relief this morning. the community, the police, the city worked together to get some troublesome neighbors to move out. the people living in a north oakland neighborhood say they endured years of intimidation and fear with a repeated record of crime from one house. so the homeowners decided to fight back. don link is the president of a local neighborhood crime prevention council. he says they documented years of escalateing problems. >> if you have a little kid and you're diving for the floor in your own living room because of

all the shootings going on, it just is totally unacceptable. >> the neighborhood council then asked the city to exercise its nuisance abatement ordinance. the city did step in. they came to an agreement with the family. the owner sold the house. the people moved out to avoid facing a hefty fine. the centers for disease control now classifying what it means to be a heavy drinker. according to the cdc, women are considered heavy drinkers if they have eight or more drinks a week. for men it's 14. a drink is considered 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. experts say the definition is different for women because they are typically smaller than men and more alcohol ends up in their bloodstream. the study also says heavy drinking is the third leading cause of preventable deaths killing 10% of adults between the ages of 20 and 64. today the state will announce new rules on taxing food purchased from food trucks.

waiting at the toll plaza with no with no major issues. the traffic is going to be better on the san mateo bridge. i want to show you that traffic is the moderate there. westbound 92 over to foster city. 7:32 let's go back to the desk. cash, drugs and playboy magazines, they're just some of the things that a bay area postal inspector is accused of stealing in the mail. post office employees in the south bay, they are shocked by this news. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live now from san jose. you've been out there talking with co-workers of that postal inspector. good morning janine. >> good morning. so far everyone says they are just stunned. a lot of them are talking about it this morning, and they say it's a blow to a federal agency like a post office that people trust to handle their mail. according to this criminal complaint filed in federal court, it says that kwan howard told employees to hand loose items in the mail to him and then he would go to a room in

the distribution center and stash the goods. authorities say they have images caught on surveillance cameras that show howard with the stolen items. they include cash, prescription pills, marijuana, passports, jewelry, rare coins, silver bars. collectible playboys and other memorabilia. postal workers who didn't want to be identified tell us that they looked up to howard who worked at a postal inspector, and they say he was the one who taught them what to do and what not to do during their orientation. >> he was telling me how to go about doing it and what i needed like as i needed to be like an honest person, like not have like anything in my background so i can get through so i was like okay. it's shocking that that guy was my orientation. >> reporter: howard is facing two counts of mail theft, one count of possessing stolen mail is one count of of destroying

u.s. mail. according to the san francisco chronicle, howard was also a witness in the case against a former san francisco supervisor ed ju and testified that ju's regular mail went to burrling game, not san francisco where he claimed to live so he could run for office. in 2012 he was awarded federal employee of the year by the san francisco bay area executive board. if convicted he could reportedly face up to 20 years in prison. we're also going to reach out in the next hour of mornings on 2 to one of the higher ups with the postal service to see if they are releasing any official comment. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. happening today, a critical vote on the long debated suicide barrier on the golden gate bridge. this is what the steel net structure would look like. it would be installed 20 feet below the pedestrian walkway and stretched 20 feet out from the bridge. the bridge district will vote

on funding for the $76 million project. if approved, the net could be installed by early 2018. there are two men who know firsthand about the dark side of the golden gate bridge. >> it's such a big deal to get them pack over that rail. it's easy to jump. it is. you just let go and there you go. >> former chp sergeant kevin briggs has prevented hundreds of people from jumping. during his 20-year career he even became known as the guardian of the golden gate bridge. briggs now seeks to groups about suicide prevention along side a man who jumped and survived. >> god please tell me i made a mistake. i don't want to die. >> kevin hines never attempted suicide again. he's written a book about prevention. initially briggs did not support the idea because he didn't want the view of the bridge to be obstructed. after getting to know families who lost loved ones he changed

his mind. 7:36 this morning police hope surveillance video of a violent attack on a san jose store clerk will lead to an arrest. that video taken inside tiptop liquors last week captures a confrontation between a store clerk and a man stealing alcohol and cigarettes. at one point the robber starts throwing bottles at the clerk. that clerk is fighting back. customers say the violence you see on this video is shocking, and police say the rest of the tape is even worse. >> the next part that actually the clerk is pushed to the ground and the suspect's on top of him hitting him several times. >> that's very shocking. you can ruin your life to go to prison or jail just for a case of beer. >> eventually another customer broke up the fight. that robber escaped with cigarettes and alcohol. surprisingly the clerk only suffered minor injuries, but the robber left behind thousands of dollars in damages. take a look at the video. if you recognize that man, contact the police.

two teenagers facing charges in connection with a robbery and a severe assault in livermore. it happened about 3 a.m. on june 14th at a jogging path under the stanley boulevard bridge. witnesses called police. they reported a group of men beating another man with sticks and pipes. several days later police arrested four juveniles and one adult. detectives also connected that group to an armed robbery hours before the assault. police say three of the suspects were later released because of a lack of evidence. the assault victim still recovering from injuries. san francisco police searching for a unique group of criminals, shoplifters called the rainbow girls who target high end stores. police say groups of about seven shoplifters hit the union square fashion boutique. stealing purses, wallets and other items. a store employee who tried to stop them was thrown to the ground. nearby shops suspect it was the

rainbow girls. they're described as african- american women who got the nickname for wearing bright colored clothing and head scarves. >> we have luxury products here. we have to be vigilant about trying to protect ourselves as well as our merchandise. >> several union square stores have increased security including the use of more surveillance cameras. our time now 7:38. today a nationwide crackdown on boating under the influence will begin. operation dry water is aimed at reducing alcohol and drug related collisions and fatalities out on the water. last year 290 people were arrested nationwide for boating under the influence. officials with operation dry waters say between 2012 and 2013 there was a 31% decrease in the number of alcohol related recreational boater deaths. businesses in san francisco gearing up for a very busy weekend. this is pride weekend, an event that is expected to attract 1 million people to the city.

ktvu's brian flores is at city hall with some of the preparations underway. hi brian. >> hi pam, good morning, that is a lot of people and it is going to be very busy this weekend in san francisco. you're taking a live look now at city hall where lots of preparations are getting underway. you see the gay pride flag waving proudly in front of the doors there. as you mentioned, lots of preparation and excitement going on before the big event this is weekend. one of the events, volunteers will create the outline for the peak triangle display at the top of twin peaks. 175 pink tarps will make up the triangle. the history behind this is that the nazis use the triangles to identify and shame gays and lesbians. the group behind the pink triangle display says it should be seen as a symbol of hope and pride. this is a busy weekend for many of the businesses in san francisco and especially the castro district. many of the businesses are going through a makeover in an effort to revamp the historic district. it has hurt business in the past. with so much foot traffic going through this weekend, many are

streeted to remains largely unchanged. 6400 people. now the city's close to its goal of creating 3,000 units of housing for the homeless. she reece bell is a single homeless mom given a tour of the apartment she will move into this summer. >> it's not about me, it's about my kids and they're going to be so happy. they're going to be so happy because they're good good good kids. >> we don't have an income. you don't have an income you can forget about getting anywhere. you're going to stay homeless. >> some people say they've been waiting for years to get a permanent home. advocates say the city needs to focus on creating more housing for them. san leandro police are investigating a police dog attack by an innocent bystander. the victim's mother sent these pictures to ktvu. the attack happened wednesday night as police were trying to capture four carjacking suspects. officers say they spotted the suspects on bancroft avenue and sent a police dog to pursue. the dog mistakenly attacked and

bit the bystander. officers say they stopped to help the injured man before suspects were later arrested. time now 7:45. abortion clinics here in the bay area and all over the country, they're scrambling now to interpret the new supreme court ruling against a massachusetts law that restricts protesters. the massachusetts law provided a 35-foot no protest buffer zone around abortion clinics to prevent patients from being harassed. but in this ruling yesterday, the high court said the way that law was written violated the protesters first amendment rights. >> if you want to stop the protesters, then there are lots of ways to do it. but massachusetts did it too broadly. >> seven california cities have buffer zones around reproductive health clinics including san francisco, san jose and oakland. it's not clear exactly what the supreme court decision will mean for them. a very important vote expected today aimed at keeping the a's in oakland for at least

fire department. the workers trained water from the intersection, then they did some digging to make sure there was no danger of a sinkhole. the road reopened a couple of hours later. the pipe that burst yesterday, it was more than 100 years old. san francisco's puc says it's part of a 100-mile water system built shortly after the 1906 earthquake. the pipes carry the city's auxiliary water supply used for fighting fires. the firefighters say it was crucial in the mission bay fire last march, and it would be again during a major earthquake. >> we're actually happy to find this now rather than after the earthquake. >> however, fixing those old pipes, that won't be cheap. the city's estimating it would cost about $300 million to replace all of those old high pressure pipes. and now a report on a pilot killed in an air show crash last month at travis air force base is increasing the

the oakland coliseum taking about 10 minutes to drive up to downtown oakland which is about double the normal time. westbound 580 is looking good. this is a look at the map system that shows us 101. and 101 is surprisingly good in san jose. most days it's very slow into sunnyvale. it's 8:01. let's go back to the desk. topping our news now at 8:00. police are searching for the gunman responsible for a shooting near a berkeley liquor store. it happened shortly before 10:00 last night on san pablo avenue near ashby avenue. ktvu's alex savidge has been following this story since 4:30 this morning, and alex you have reaction from the shooting victim's friend? >> reporter: good morning to you. people who know the victim can't understand why he is would have been targeted in this shooting. they describe him as a family man who has children and has been taking classes at the local community college in berkeley. it was last night when he was shot just near this liquor store on san pablo avenue and

the victim was found wounded in this area behind the store. there's some crime scene tape up this morning. this all happened just before 10:00 last night. people living close by told me they heard at least five gunshots. police moved in and blocked the area off. this is again along san pablo avenue near ashby avenue. police gathered evidence in the area. they tell us the man who was shot is 38 years old and lives here in berkeley. he was taken to the hospital with what police describe as serious injuries, although a neighbor who saw him being taken away by paramedics says the man was alert and talking on his way to the hospital. a friend of the victim says he doesn't know what led up to the shooting, and he can't make sense of what happened. >> i'm kind of surprised that he would get shot. he don't seem like that type of a person, you know, in a violent lifestyle. it was shocking to all of us around here that it happened to him. >> reporter: and shortly after last night's shooting, police got information that the

shooter was possibly hiding out just around the corner from where this all took place, about two blocks away on ashby avenue. that's where a number of officers moved in to search the area. they searched through homes and apartments in that area, but in the end they could not find the shooter. that person remains on the loose this morning. at last check, the victim remains hospitalize and had again, his injuries are considered serious but a neighbor who saw him being taken away last night says he was alert and talking as he left for the hospital. live this morning in berkeley, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. berkeley police have arrested a man in connection with a double shooting earlier this month. 22-year-old donzale mejia was arrested yesterday in oakland. police say he and 23-year-old anthony durant shot two men near russell and california streets on june 11th. the victims have since recovered from their injuries. police are still looking for durant. they say he should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information is

asked to call berkeley police. one man is reportedly in critical condition after being shot last night in san jose. investigators believe the shooting may have occurred in the capital park area just before 8 p.m. now the man went to the hospital on his own. he was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, and there are no suspects at this time. time is now 8:04. trademark expected to wrap up -- testimony expected to wrap up in the oscar grant's civil try. oscar i can't's mother scheduled to be among the last witnesses in the courtroom today. the jury will hear her testimony in a videotaped deposition. oscar grant's father is suing b.a.r.t. and former b.a.r.t. police officer johannes mehserle. he claims mehserle intentionally killed his son at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station five years ago. grant's father is in prison for a 1985 murder. jury deliberations have started in the civil case filed on behalf of giants fan brian stow against the los angeles

dodgers. closing arguments were made yesterday. bryan stow a paramedic from santa cruz was brutally beaten three years ago in the parking lot of dodgers stadium by two dodgers fans, and he suffered traumatic brain injuries. those lawyers accused the dodgers of being negligent saying there was not adequate security. >> you understand the only thing that brian was doing wrong is wearing a jersey, a black one that said giants. >> responsibility for what happened to mr. stow and this condition he's in and all these medical bills he's had and will have, responsibility rests with them. >> the dodgers attorney referring to the two men who pled guilty to attacking stow. stow's attorneys are seeking $50 million in damages to pay his medical bills. time is 8:06. there's a warning this morning for car owners in california. california has become a prime target for car thieves. the san francisco business times cites studies by the

called monkey parking is refusing to obey a cease and desist order from san francisco's city attorney. monkey parking is an iphone app that lets drivers auction off the spot they're parked. the city attorney says it's illegal to sell access to a public space. the ceo of monkey parking says drivers are merely selling the information that they're leaving the parking space. he vows to keep doing business despite the city's july 11th july 11th deadline for him to stop. needles buried in the sand in santa cruz on beaches may be a sign of a bigger problem throughout the city. yesterday we told you about syringes found on cowell beach, but a group that logs the number of needles found all over santa cruz county says it's a bigger public safety problem. take back santa cruz, the organization says more than 5,000 needles have been recovered all over the county in the past 1 months. -- 18 months. there have been seven injuries including three involving

banned in california. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning. , yeah, this is quite the stash that firefighters are unloading from the truck that they confiscated from someone's home. you can see these massive fireworks. these are like professional grade, and we understand that these were actually bought in indiana for about 6 to $8000 and then they were going to be sold here off the internet, off craigslist is how firefighters stumbleed upon is this whole operation. we understand that they were trying to sell these fireworks for probably upwards of 80 to $100,000. three suspects are now in custody. they were arrested, of course, for trying to sell them on craigslist. officers uncovered 2500 pounds. that's more than a ton of illegal fireworks. they were retrieved from antioch and, again, these shoot several hundred feet into the air. they carry a huge risk. they're extremely dangerous, and contra costa county fire

spearheaded this effort to track illegal fireworks because they had so many problems last year. people shooting them off, getting burned, causing fires. they surfed the internet. they pinpointed the location for the fire works and hooked up with police to try to make the bust here. there's also if i could find it around here, there's a catalog. here it is. this catalog right over here, this shows you what people would see whenever they tried to buy some of these fireworks. they would sell these canister shells and all of these what are calls cakes, and they would pay about 50 bucks and then they were able to get them delivered to their house. three suspects in custody right now. we'll have much more on this story coming up at noon. we're live in pittsburgh, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> 8:25 is the time. if you haven't seen this story, a u. c. berkeley grad taking her final trimester in stride literally. in 25 minutes, the woman's

westbound, this drive time is about 25 minutes getting into san francisco there are no major problems. but you do see some slow traffic still obviously, and most of it is right here at the toll plaza. if you're driving on 880 northbound you will see traffic that's slowing down a little bit passing 66 and driving up the high street. that's the bulk of the slow traffic. then it starts to even out as you head up towards downtown oakland. southbound 880 near dakoto road. they're working a crash. chp has a couple of different crashes reported. causing a little slow traffic. it's not a big deal. your drive time between 238 was checking in at less than 15 minutes. let's go back to the desk. thank you sal. cash, drugs, and playboy magazines, some of the things that a bay area postal inspector is accused of stealing. a post office employee in the south bay, they're shocked by the news. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us now from san jose, and janine, you've been talking

with some of the co-workers about this postal inspector? >> reporter: they're shocked. this this criminal complaint, federal investigators say that they went to the home of cuan howard and found evidence of stolen mail inside his trash can. they say that proof also exists because they say they found howard on surveillance cameras with stolen mail inside the post office. now prosecutors say that cuan howard told employees to hand loose items found in the mail to him, and then he would go in a room in the postal distribution center and stash the goods. authorities say howard was captured in that room scanning for cameras. in one of those instances they say he disabled one of the camera lenses so he wouldn't get caught. items that prosecutors allege he stole include cash, prescription pills, marijuana, passports, jewelry, rare coins,

silver bars, collectible playboys and other memorabilia. >> when i hear something like this, it just reallys me off because, you know, mail is personal, you know. people send it out, and they expect it to get to where it's supposed to go and when something like this happens, somebody in authority like this, it really makes me mad. >> reporter: some mail handlers tell us howard taught them what to do and whatnot to do during orientation. one says he wanted to become an inspector and actually asked howard for advice. >> if you go inside in the back, there's cameras like they drilled that into us. that stood out about how, you know, they're watching us 24/7, so don't mess up. so that stood out. i was like okay, i'm going to try to get in like probably next year so i'm not going to try to do anything stupid. >> reporter: howard is facing two counts of mail theft, one count of possessing stolen mail and one count of destroying mail. according to the san francisco chronicle, howard was also a

witness in the case against former san francisco supervisor ed jew and testified that jew's regular mail went to burling game, howard was awarded federal employee of the year by the san francisco bay area federal executive board. if howard is convicted he reportedly could face 20 years in prison. and i've just been informed by the santa clara county sheriff's office that howard is actually still in custody and no bail is set. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega. ! happening today a critical vote on the long debated suicide barrier for the golden gate bridge. take a look at what the steel net barrier would look like. it would be installed about 20 feet below the pedestrian walkway and then stretched 20 feet out from the bridge. today the bridge district will vote on funding for the $76 million project. if it's approved, the suicide

net could be installed by early 2018. there are two men who really know firsthand about the dark side of the golden gate bridge. >> it is such a big deal to get them back over that rail. it's easy to jump. it is. you just let go and there you go. former chp sergeant kevin briggs has prevented hundreds of people from jumping. during his 20-year career he became known as the guardian of the golden gate bridge. briggs now speaks to groups about suicide prevention along side a man who did jump and survived. >> i kept saying in my head i can't die like this. god, please save me. i've made a mistake. i don't want to die. >> kevin hines never attempted suicide again, and he wrote a book about prevention. he helped lead the campaign for a net on the golden gate bridge. at first briggs didn't support the idea because he didn't want the view of the bridge to be blocked or obstructed but after getting to know the families who lost their loved ones, he

changed his mind. san francisco police have identified the suspected serial arsonist believed to be responsible for a series of recent fires. investigators say the man seen in this surveillance video is 47-year-old anthony meherano of san francisco. he's accused of setting four fires in the south of market area in late may including one in a high-rise apartment building that destroyed one car. ktvu news spoke to two men who watched the surveillance video and called in the tip that led to the arrest. >> we were watching. he just happened to walk in right down the street, and i said, wow, let me watch him where he's going. >> police were going up the hill kind of carefully behind him. there was a number of plain clothes policemen that surrounded him and seemed to go off without a hitch. the arson suspect is now being held at san francisco county jail on $1.3 million

one house. homeowners decided to fight back. don link is the president of a local neighborhood crime prevention council, and he says they documented years of escalateing problems. >> if you have a little kid and you're diving for the floor in your own living room because of the shootings going on, it just totally is unacceptable. >> the council then asked the city to exercise its nuisance abatement ordinance. the city stepped in and came to an agreement with the family. the owner sold the home and the people moved out to avoid facing a hefty fine. abortion clinics here in the bay area and around the country are scrambling to interpret the new supreme court ruling against a massachusetts law restricting protesters. the massachusetts law provided a 35-foot no protest buffer zone around abortion clinics. it was an attempt to prevent patients from being harassed, but in its ruling yesterday, the supreme court said that the way the law was written was a violation of the protesters first amendment rights. >> if you want to stop the

protesters, then there are lots of ways to do it. but massachusetts did it too broadly. >> seven california cities have buffer zones around reproductive health clinics including san francisco, san jose and oakland. it's unclear exactly what the supreme court decision will mean for them. time is 8:53. the city of san francisco reviewing the success of its ten-year plan to get homeless people off the streets. according to a new report, the city has moved 19,000 chronically homeless people off the streets in the past ten years. even with that the number of people living on the streets today is still about 6400. the city is close to its goal of creating 3,000 units of housing for the homeless and sherise bell here is a single homeless mother who was given a tour of the apartment she will move into this summer. >> it's not about me. it's about my kids and they're going to be so happy.
