now at noon, breaking news, a multimillion dollar plan to build a suicide barrier on the iconic span of the golden gate bridge has been approved. a lot of men on the bay area lookout for illegal fireworks as the fourth of july approaches. just made in contra costa county that left three people behind bars. plus, the controversial ruling out of the south bay about documents involving the murder trial of the man accused of kidnapping and killing morgan l. teen lamar. some say it will force the trial to be removed.

>> ktvu, channel 2 news starts right now with breaking news. >> good afternoon, i'm christina. the golden gate bridge officials approved multimillion dollar to build a suicide barrier on the iconic span. ktvu's tom vacar was there and he joins us now live. tom? >> reporter: very big decision. it was a unanimous vote. a unanimous vote after many emotional appeals from those who lost loved ones to the bridge. perhaps most relieved in the crowd was kevin heinz who survived his own jump from the golden gate to the bridge into

the ocean below. >> it's a sense of hope that when this happened, you realize that if we can do this, we can do anything. and if we can put out suicides in the golden gate bridge, we can fight suicides globally. >> reporter: because this was a major joint project of the federal government, the state government, the bridge district and all of that stuff, it's going to make years to complete because they'll have to be undertaken to actually install the stainless steel net that will be about two stories below where people will actually jump into the net. they won't be killed and while that's going on, the average for the bridge is about 21 jumpers per year to their deathsment reporting live, tom vacar, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thank you, tom. move now to oakland, one of the cities that fireworks is banned.

the drought and dry conditions make it too risky. the same in contra costa county where they have just made an illegal bust. we go now to ktvu's tara moriarty who joins us now live with more information. tara? >> reporter: well, one city, fireworks are banned from in these dry conditions. very risky. in contra costa county, authorities seize add ton of fireworks, literally. >> this will kill you. this is like holding a grenade. >> 2500 pounds of illegal fireworks. >> these are not your normal run-of-the-mill fireworks, the kind of things you want kids running around with. they are dangerous and can hurt a lot of people. >> reporter: they were seized from two vehicles in a storage facility in pittsburgh. >> these are considered professional grade fireworks. >> reporter: full on explosives. it was bought from india

between $6 and $8 but going to be sold here on the streets of pittsburgh for $800. contra costa county found the sellers through craig list and set up a meeting. they arrested three men on fireworks charges 26-year-old ivan medina and 30-year-old luis medina from indiana. >> the sad part, the scratch is a drop in the bucket compared. >> reporter: the sellers began to yank on craigslist, and that's exactly what firefighters and police want. >> we want to remind people, we're in the drought, it is going to be a really bad fire season. fireworks are clearly much smaller than yesterday. they are labeled, but again, only in a dozen bay area cities. we'll provide a link.

live from oakland hills, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. a warrant is out for a bay area man at the center of a prostitution and money laundering investigation. on wednesday, we showed you this raid of the mountain view home of erica murrow, later released on $500,000 bond. he was going to show up for a scheduled court appearance this morning. he's accused of running my red book and laundering millions of dollars in profits. just a few hours ago, a south bay judge ruled to unseal grand jury transfer of garcia flores, the man accused of kidnapping the morgan l. teen. janine de la vega joining us live to explain what this means. janine? >> reporter: we'll know a lot more evidence that the district attorney office has on garcia torres. now, one legal analyst says that he thinks that too much

information out in the public may lead to the trial being moved to another county. this is some trial video of the suspect of garcia torres present in court today as the defense attorney and the prosecutor argued against unsealing the transcript. morgan hill teenagers here, lamar two years ago. the defense argued more information of the public prejudices with the jury and seat an impartial jury. it would lead to a change of venue and delay it. the judge ruled in favor of releasing the documents after hearing the attorney for the san jose mercury news who argues the public has a right to know. >> we're now going to know what occurred between zero lamar and garcia torres. we're going to know a lot more about what occurred in the time that they were together. the defendant and sierra lamar. we're going to know about the

deliberations in this self-case filed on behalf of giants fan against los angeles dodgers got under way. brian stowe from santa cruz brutally beaten by two dodgers fans and suffered traumatic brain injuries. stow's lawyers accused of being negligent saying there wasn't adequate security. two men pled guilty to attacking stow. they seek $15 million in damages to pay his medical bills. a u.s. postal inspector in san jose wants a federal employee of the year is now accused of stealing mail. claude howard is facing several charges including mail theft and of destroyed u.s. mail. according to a criminal complaint, howard, who is a postal inspector was caught on surveillance cameras. the items he's accused of stealing include cash, prescription pills, marijuana, passports, jewelry,

displayed for the big pride parade. the route will go to feeds to the market but creator said she's been doing it for 7 years and the most floats she's seen in the parade's history. out of a crew of 12, they used 40 pounds of glitter, 200 cans of paint, 300 sheets of lumber and 200 boxes of staples. >> last year, gay marriage was made legal two days before the parade and it was huge. i think that's why we see such a huge push this year because it's been a full year where people are really embracing this is a change. the movement is really taking a new push forward and i think people really feel the excitement >> reporter: they hope to see a lot of green. they had a tough time recently because of ongoing construction

we have to wait a little longer to see if the oakland a's stay at the coliseum or play somewhere else. there wasn't a quorum quote this morning because oakland city leaders boycotted the authority board meeting. they're upset over how the proposed ten year lease extension for the a's is written. the officials are not disclosing details of the agreement. >> they voted not to have them come today! the board did hear some opposition to the deal. one reader expressed concern of what it could mean to the raiders. any contract to release extension would have to be approved by the oakland city council and board of supervisors. in an hour, the uc berkeley

barbre can expected to announce resignation from the job. barber held the position for ten years. she decided it was time for a change in leadership. barbre plans to remain in sports and sources say an alum and student athlete interim athletic director. berkeley police search this afternoon for a person who shot and wounded a man along a busy street last night. it was just before 10:00 when neighbors reported hearing at least five gunshots from sinopia blow avenue. the 38-year-old victim found shot just behind a liquor store. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. and say the man was talking to paramedics. he takes classes at the community college. >> i was kind of surprised he would get shocked because he doesn't seem like the type of

left behind thousands of dollars in damage. the fourth of july holiday is still a week away, but not for congress. they've already left washington and won't be back for more than a week and as justin gray reports, congress is running out of time to pass any new major legislation. >> it's quiet and looks like a holiday here in the office building because for congress, a july 4th holiday is already under way. >> congress' work calendar looks different than yours or mine. they'll only be in session 12 days until the november elections. >> we have very few legislative days left in the year. >> most of september and october, and then a late duct congress unlikely to tackle big issues on election day. it's running out of time like comprehensive immigration reform and the clock is ticking for like the highway trust fund. >> we've got to act, i believe, in the wake of july the 7th. >> reporter: the fund pays for big chunks of the road and

and he's a look at the dow which is down about 38 points. >> the definition of a heavy drinker is now changing according to the centers for disease control. women who consume 8 or more drinks a week now fall into the heavy drinker classification and for men, it's 14 or more drinks a week. a drink is considered five ounces of wine, 12 oz of beer or 1.5 oz of liquor. it's different for women because they're typically smaller than men and more alcohol ends up in the bloodstream. today, the state is set to announce new rules on taxing food purchase from food trucks. right now, food truck operators include sales tax as part of the menu price or figure out the tax separately. starting next tuesday, july 1st, vendors should always include the prices and change the prices at different locations because sales tax can vary from city to city. team usa is gearing up for
