units. dozens of firefighters t responded. the metal roof made it difficult to fight the flame. crews evacuated the adjacent building. one neighbor says it took less than 15 minutes to put out the complex. >> i thought fire from the condominium on the right side slowly started going to the inside. i just went and started knocking on the doors. >> reporter: one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. a san francisco man pled not guilty to burglary and arson charges in connection with a fire at the 1rincon hill. 48-year-old anthony bejarano was arrested wednesday. a judge ordered him to stay away from the rincon1 building.

angelin garcia-torrez is charged with kidnapping and murdering the teen two years ago. today a judge from san jose ordered the transportation can be released to the public. the transcripts could reveal a lot about the prosecutions case. >> so we're going to know a lot more about what occurreded in that time that they were together. the defendant and sierra lamar. we're going to learn more about the dna evidence associated with the case. >> reporter: defense attorneys oppose the release of the transcriptions arguing the details could sway the jury. in the case of a man accused of killing a federal public defender investigator. the attorney representing randy alana had argued the prosecutions case was weak and insufficient. her body was found dump aufd interstate 80.

barrier could cost another 100 lives or more. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. the first of two new lanes opened at an east bay freeway intended to make commute faster. the lanes provide extra room to merge for drivers entering or leaving the freeway. >> when people want to merge on and off of an on and off ramp they need to have that extra space to do so so we hope that this will allow some congestion that was building up to ease some what. >> reporter: the southbound lanes expected to be ready for next tuesday's morning commute. there's work in san francisco tonight that the munni's union and mta have reached an agreement. the union says details of the proposed three year contract will be presented to union members at a special meeting on monday. the same day the current contract expires. the deal is subject to

it's a common refrain among teenagers there's nothing to do. now a father who opened up a teen nightclub to give teenagers to go is facing some resistance. debora villalon is where a dance floor is nothing but empty this afternoon. >> reporter: well it's a soft open and a man is trying to get a permit to operate a teen club by day and a bar by night. >> reporter: no alcohol served here, some evings are for the 12 to 15-year-olds, tonight it's 16 to 20 years old. >> i charge for cover here, they get a wristband. >> reporter: he's poured tens of thousands of the dollars into his dance club. >> kids like to feel special.

chosen to be the interim athletic director. an expected vote by the alameda county coliseum authority to approve a 10 year lease for the oakland a's did not happen today. some city leaders boycotted the meeting. only four of the eight members showed up and that fell short of a quorum required for a vote. they want further negotiations. another vote is possible next week. the a's current lease does not expire for another four months. the line broke today and it's not the first time. as john fowler found out a pipeline runs along a fault line, the hayward fault. >> reporter: after neighbors noticed water spurting up into secretes, we discovered more than a decade of repeated water main failures. at several places on this block of harbor drive. a crew replacing the pipe is

just a few blocks away. and a couple more days would have changed out the section that failed today. this water main was first installed 83 days ago. >> they did not know the fault line ran through here. we didn't have a freeway that ran through the area. >> reporter: the green line you see snaking up to tunnel road is being replaced with 12,000 feet of steel pipe most of it in steep unstable soil. east bay mud used thick pipe you see here inside the steel pipe. the utility is spending $86 million just this year to replace 10 miles of critical pipe and repairing another 4,200 miles on average two brakes a day. >> what we have to do is fix it as fast as possible because clearly it's a waste of water and during the drought we want to stop leaks. >> reporter: a 1/3 of that increase will go to pay for new pipes. without the pipes they say the risk is in an earthquake you

cloud cover. but it clears out and temperatures warm up. 6:00a.m. you have a doze of fog heading out toward the livermore valley. most of it will get stuck up here in the east bay hills. all along the peninsula here. kind of out toward crystal springs then a break for san jose and fremont you will have fog. temperatures warm pretty rapidly. 90s start to show up in the far eastern inland bay valley. so tomorrow warmer by a few more degrees. 90s showing up just very far edge of concord of the east livermore valley and of the contra costa county. and that will be the beginning of a warming trend that will take us into the weekend. sunday is going to be a bit warmer, fire danger becomes a story. when i come back we'll dial in specific temperature. i'll give you specifics back here 10:45. fans are remembering soul

california voters are being asked to decide if certain nonviolent crimes reduced from felonies to misdemeanor. the ballot initiative that just won approval and the politician who was one of the sponsors. >> reporter: homes to thousands of criminals, some arriving thanks to san francisco d.a.gascon. gascon sponsored the safe neighborhoods and schools act. the measure if approved would require misdemeanor sentences instead of felony sentences for some nonviolent crimes like drug offenses. >> the idea is to keep low level offenses out of sam quintin. take the money that is saved and inject it into education. >> when they get incarcerated

they don't get the education necessary to keep them out of prison. >> reporter: a necessary 200 to $250 million a year. some of the money would then be injected into k-12 schools and some mental health problems. >> we have a lot of -- that our kids come to school with. >> reporter: that could pay for even more crime prevention and substance abuse programs in her schools. >> we know when we do invest in our kids at these younger ages it can make the difference throughout their entire school career and on into their adult life. >> reporter: violent criminals, people convicted of murder, rape and child molestation would not benefit of the schools act. until now, there's no opposition against the measure. >> the definition of a heavy

really doing nothing wrong when the police dog attacked him. more information from ktvu's jana katsuyama. >> reporter: mcfadden showed us his ripped up jacket and t- shirt. he was a bystanders by a police chief and was bitten by a san leandro police dog. >> he was pretty much dragging me by my arm. >> reporter: he showed us his wounds stitched up where the dog dug his teeth into him. >> the dog wasn't obeying his command because i heard him say release certain times. >> this was a circumstance that was unintentional and accidental. >> reporter: the dog's handler a 14 year police handler and the canine are certified. >> the dog is a german shepherd

that is five month certified. >> reporter: the officer faced a difficult decision. they had been chasing four suspects and decided to release the dog only when one suspect ran away. >> this is the only time he's bit someone other than the suspect he had been asked to pursue. >> reporter: canines can be deployed when there's a reasonable belief that the suspect poses a danger to the public, the officer or the handler. mcfadden says it should. >> he released his dog in a public area, you know where there's children, families that are outside. that could have been anybody that could have gotten grabbed. >> reporter: the officer and the dog are back out on patrol. they are investigating this incident and reviewing their policies. in san leandro, jana katsuyama,

ktvu channel 2 news. happening now in san francisco's castro district. big crowds celebrating pride weekend. this is a live picture from market and castro streets. the crowds here had been growing all night but streets remained open through traffic. additional events are being held tomorrow in the castro and at civic center with the big parade on sunday. one of the grand marshals of sunday's parade is 60-year- old hercules high school student julius gutierrez. you may recall she faced battery charges for fighting with classmates who say that she bullied her but for being transgender. >> with all the negativity and everything that was negative it got switched around and got put into positive. and now i'm on the top. >> reporter: the charges against gutierrez were dropped after a public outcry. as for the parade she told us she was honored just to be nominated to be a grand marshal and was thrilled that she was

the 4th of july is going to have a little less bang in the east bay after authorities confiscated one the ton of illegal fireworks. authorities say they seized 4,500 pounds of fireworks in

pittsburg. today officers were cataloging the contraband. the fireworks were purchased in indiana and they could sell for more than $100,000 here in the bay area. he says they are professional grade and very dangerous. especially during our dry summer and drought. >> the sad part is that this is just a really small scratch. it's a drop in the bucket compared to what we think is out there. >> investigators say they found the fireworks on craigslist. it led to the arrest of three men 22-year-old jose hernandez of richmond, 26-year-old ivan medina of oakland and 30-year- old luis medina from indiana. illegal fireworks are an issue for authorities all across the bay area adding to the danger this year are extremely dry brush thanks to the drought. in oakland firefighters are already on alert for the 4th. rob roth shows us the

along the coast it was still cool. there's plenty of fog out there. the fog is out there right now. to the north of us you see weather systems starting to clear off. we had a string of weather systems moving through portions of california. not really bringing us much. we had a few sprinkles in the morning. now we're settling with high pressure. i've demonstrated where the fog is now over toward oakland, alameda. and the fog will eventually will fill in in me -- in nevato and oak -- oakland. so a warm up for the weekend. partly cloudy and cooler. you see the flags at the civic

center that's a westerly wind. the winds have been blowing pretty strong. so the forecast is for this high to strengthen right through the weekend. tomorrow it starts and the heat is there. in the valley you're going to see some low 90s. for us it's upper 80s maybe a couple of low 90s. but the real key stays east. and as the high flows farther east we start to warm up. the winds go slightly offshore and 90s come our way. take a look at the forecast high. look at sundays 95 in livermore. 82 in fremont, san jose downtown 85 degrees. check out monday monday is really going to get up there with upper 90s. a much warmer pattern as we get past your saturday and into your bay area weekend. as we get into sunday and monday. that's the story high pressure taking charge. tomorrow starts to warm. obviously in fire danger is going to increase especially on sunday and monday. humidity will be down there at 25% and temperatures are going
