>> reporter: police are looking for a suspected drunk driver who crashed into a very popular hardware store in san francisco's castro district. we'll tell you the damage next. all eyes on the supreme court. we're expecting a desoinths a significant case involving abortion rights, religious liberty and obamacare. one man is hospitalized after barely escaping an early- morning house fire. we'll tell you how he was injured and where the fire was

"mornings on 2" starts right now. we're live in front of a well-known store in the castro district. early this morning, a driver plowed right into the front of the store leaving behind an expensive case. tara moriarty is there and coming up in two minutes she willtel us why the owner says she's angry because what the driver did after the crash. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm brian flores. dave clark is off today. steve is here. it will be hot today. >> pretty much for any. there's a little bit of fog down near monterey. inland temperatures not only will it be warm to hot but we also have the high fire danger. today looks to be the hottest day. there's not much of a breeze, thankfully. but it's a big mountain of high pressure on us. san jose will start off mild.

64. 80 at noon. a high today of 82. east san jose will be about 86, 87. 68 in livermore. san jose in the 60s. a few 50s. a couple of 40s on the coast. that's it. everyone starting off pretty warm. pittsburgh is almost 70. brentwood is in there. walnut creek 60. la fayette, still 64. i mean, it's just minutes away from beginning to warm up. the fog is monterey south. sunny and hot by the coast. really nice. it will be cooking inland. that's stockton hot. with 100s for a few and 70s, 80s closer to the water. here's sal. good morning. we're seeing traffic to the midcommute levels right now. starting off instate 80 westbound -- interstate 80 westbound. speeds are 50 miles an hour. 23-minute drive time. not all that bad. when you get to the bay bridge, you will be waiting at least that long to get on the san francisco side including the

backup at the bay bridge toll plaza and then your drive across the bridge. you will have about a 25, 30- minute drive time getting across into san francisco. as we look at our maps, southbound 880 is slow coming from 238 down to the fremont area. we also do have some slow traffic on the dumbarton san mateo bridge approach. but 20 minutes from 238 to thornton avenue and then 580 is a huge mess here on 580 from the altamont pass to 680 taking almost an hour to make that commute. the traffic in san jose is slowest on 8 a. b.a.r.t. and caltrain is on time. muni has slight delays on the bus lines. nog really major. they will be delayed five, ten minutes. you might want to give yourself extra time. back to the desk. the owner of a store in san francisco is cleaning up after a car smashed into the building at cliff's variety store at 18th and castro streets. tara moriarty is outside that store with more details and

what police are doing to track down the person responsible. >> reporter: good morning. the owner has basically cleaned up a lot of the mess that was left behind by this driver. as you take a look, you can see there is a storefront window completely missing, a garbage can on its side. if we pan to the right, some structural damage to the building. police say that the driver of a convertible mercedes slammed into cliff's variety hardware store before 4:30. the person veered off the road, two windows were shattered. toys were knocked all over the floor inside. the owner says she's angry that the driver ran off after the incident. >> i think it's probably pretty typical of anybody drinking and driving and has an accident to not have the man enough to stand around and take the knocks for it. >> reporter: there's some blood inside the car according to

police. the driver was hurt. we're not sure how badly. police are running the license plate. they will be asking nearby businesses for surveillance video. we'll keep you posted and let you know if this driver is caught. we're live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. also new this morning, firefighters responded to reports of heavy smoke at the muni station in the castro district. it happened before 5:00 this morning according to the san francisco fire department. the smoke was coming from a maintenance truck parked near a tunnel at the station. the fire department says no one was injured. the chp is investigating a deadly crash that happened overnight on interstate 680 and alamo. it happened on the northbound side of the freeway near stone valley road. a witness called 911 saying a car drove up on the right shoulder of the freeway and hit several trees. the driver died. he's being identified only as a

59-year-old man from pittsburgh. the chp said he was driving by himself. no one else was hurt. one man has been hurt in an early-morning house fire in oakland. it started 90 minutes ago at a home on 35th avenue. alex savidge joins us live to tell us what the man was doing moments before the fire. >> reporter: good morning to you, brian. this man was sleeping inside the home, when he smelled smoke and flames. he was able to get out of the car. in process of trying to escape his home, he was burned on his head. let me show you the video. you can see firefighters treating this man mon a yard -- on -- on a yard, on a lawn nearby. he was eventually taken to the hospital to be checked out. he had minor burns to his head. he's expected to be okay. the fire started around 5:30 this morning at this house, which is on 35th avenue, right near 580. oakland firefighters got here fast, in about a minute or so and they knocked the flames

down quickly. the fire appears to have started on the front porch of the home, which is raising red flags. crews say the man inside was lucky to get out. >> he woke up and saw flames. it appears that he did come through the front door where the majority of the fire is. he's very lucky. >> reporter: and there was a fire investigator who was called out here to this scene to try to figure out what started the fire. for the most part, he was focused on the front porch. the cause has not been become clear just yet but certainly the fact that the fire started outside of the home is unusual. the fire has not been labeled suspicious. but certainly again, raising red flags for investigator. the man inside the home. he did make it out okay with minor burns to his head. he's being treated at the hospital. live in oakland, alex savidge,

ktvu channel 2 news. oakland's improving budget situation is allowing the fire department is end rotating station closures. for the past two years, the city's fire department has gone through so-called fire station brownouts. each station has been shut down for three days at a time with rotating closures saving about $2.5 million a year. but oakland's new budget has given the fire department some breathing room and the brownouts will end tomorrow. 7:08. oakland city council's trying to determine how to spend and unexpected windfall of $29 million. they have until tomorrow to amend the budget and include the extra money. the surplus comes from home sale transfer taxes due to the hot real estate market. mayor quan wants the point to pay down debt and fill some of the positions that had to on le named -- that had to be eliminated. other council members say the money should be set aside in a rainy day fund.

jean quan is seeking a second term. the mayor's office tweeted this photo of quan at yesterday's pride parade in san francisco as she picks off her re- election campaign in the city across the bay. her campaign against crime, she says has made the streets safer. she said she's brought new jobs and new housing to oakland during her first term as mayor. she faces a packed field of more than a dozen contenders, including two members of the oakland city council. tomorrow, the richmond city council is voting on a proposal that some say are testing their first amendment rights. the proposal by councilwoman beckles would enforce a six- month ban on anyone who disrupts a council meeting with vulgar or hateful comments. critics of beckle say she's one of the worse offenders. they say she regularly uses the f-word when voicing her opinion

at meetings. happening today, muni workers will review the deal that could end their contract dispute with management. on friday, union leaders reached a tentative agreement with management on a new three- year contract. this would settle a disruptive labor dispute. earlier, you will there was a sickout forcing the transit agency to cancel hundreds of bus, streetcar, metro and cable car runs. a mountain view woman was arrested after she reportedly conattacked two -- reportedly attacked two caltrain conductors. they say she was drunk after attending the pride festival. she was asked to get off and became violent. she allegedly hit one of them on the head with her purse. maria posada valderrama was arrested and faces charges.

steve said today will be very hot. it could be a good thing the fair is closed on mondays. that's after 40 people needed first aid for heat-related problems yesterday. temperatures were in the mid- 90s but may have seemed hotter because of all of the pavement at the pleasanton fairgrounds. people send to be sealing all of the sites so they forgot to drink water and rest when temperatures get high. >> usually you would think either the very young or the elderly and we actually ran the gamut pretty good. we did a good range of 19, 20 through 70 something. >> some of the people who were treated for heat problems felt well enough to continue spending time at the fair. others went home. five were taken to the hospital for further observation or treatment. stay hydrated. >> it's summer out there, too. 7:11. coming up, he went out for ice cream for his nephew and never

san francisco is spending nearly a million dollars a year to help house homeless families outside of the city. two-thirds of the families receiving subsidies are sent outside of the city. some as far as sacramento because of sky high rents and a shortage of housing, city officials say it actually makes financial sense to send people out of the city. under the program, homeless families get an average of $600 a month in rent subsidies. that money could go further in sacramento where the average rent starts at $800. compare that to san francisco where rent starts at $2500. time now is 7:15. the 49ers making their final preparations for the huge crowds that will be coming to the new levi stadium in santa clara. it opens in just five weeks. yesterday, the 9ers teamed up with the valley transportation authority for a dry run for game days. they blocked off several streets, set up security lanes and put up signs directing fans how to get around the stadium. they want to reduce the

confusion for fans taking mass transit. >> moving that people, coordinating that people is a challenge. you know, i think we've done it -- woosh's going to bible -- we're going to be able to do it through planning and things like this, practice. >> the first event at the state of the art football stadium will be a soccer game. the earthquakes take on the field -- will take the field, i should say, august 2nd. >> very exciting. >> yeah. >> almost here. last day of june. let's check in with sal and see what's happening on the roads. >> well, it's getting crowded. one of the commutes we're looking at is the pleasant hill to oakland commute. right now from pleasant hill road on highway 24 westbound to the caldecott, it's taking about nine minutes. most of the slow traffic is here after you reach interstate 680 and head west and slowing in orinda, a couple of slow spots there. but it's getting more crowded by the moment. i expect this traffic time, this drive time to go up. let's go to the bay bridge toll

plaza where you have a drive time of 30 minutes getting into san francisco. no major delays on the span but there is a lot of people cueing up. 580 livermore has been a mess. easily the lowest -- osh the slowest -- or the slowest commute as you drive westbound. there have been a lot of minor accidents. most of it is slow traffic coming in on westbound 080 until you get to the 680 interchange. after that, you will see slow traffic on 680. as we look acthe santa cruz mountains, that highway looks okay. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sir. we're fog-free. there is a tiny patch in monterey bay. south of that, it's solid from big sur south. it's not here today. a couple of high clouds around. the coast is clear. it will be nice over there. this will probably be their best of the day of the week by

earlier this month, delta got flack from customers after tweeting a picture of a giraffe following the u.s. again against ghana. breaking news, the u.s. supreme court has just issued a ruling in a much-anticipated case. the birth control case. the justices ruled that the oklahoma-based company, hob been lobby, does not have to abide by the mandate in the affordable care act that all businesses must provide contraception coverages. hobby lobby argued that providing birth control violates religious freedom. we'll have more on this breaking news and a live report from washington, d.c. coming up at 7:30. the court also issued a ruling on labor unions. the justices this morning ruled that public sector labor unions cannot force home health

workers to pay union dues if they object to being affiliated with the union. the justices said collecting the fees violates the first amendment rights of workers who are not union meles -- members. it involves a group of workers in illinois. many say this decision could cripple the ability of public sector unions to function if workers cannot be forced to pay dues. many won't. as a result, union coffers would dry up. 7:22. coming up -- a secret social experiment on facebook revealed. mum a midair scare. the surprise in the middle of a flight that forced a pilot to make an emergency landing.

the boeing 737 was heading from chicago to orange county last night. a passenger took these pictures after the slide deployed. another described the flight attendants' reactions. >> you heard a big bang and a hiss and they just had a panicked look and ran back to the center of the rain. >> no one was hurt. united put the passengers up in hotels in wichita and they are expected to fly to orange county this morning. the crew is expecting the plane to determine what caused the slide to deploy. 7:25. happening today -- president obama plans to ask congress for $2 billion to help with the flood of immigrant children crossing the u.s./mexico bord her. the white house says it will request the homeland security department be granted the authority to be the procedures.

into san francisco. as i look at san jose, it's somewhat surprising it's not worse. traffic is busy on 101 after 880 and then slows in sunnyvale and mountain view. 280 traffic is busy as well. let's go back to the desk. >> all right, sal. thank you. breaking news out of the supreme court this morning. a much-anticipated ruling just minutes ago, the justices said corporations can opt out of the new healthcare law requirement that they cover birth control for women if they object on religious grounds. kyla campbell live in front of the supreme court this morning in washington, d.c. with more on this ruling. kyla? >> reporter: i was inside the court as they started to read their opinion this morning. the decision was 5-4 in favor of hobby lobby. beyond the folks standing right here, you can see some of the demonstrators beyond and also the media as well. as they were reading the opinion, they did not get to the final decision in there. but you could tell they were

leaning toward hobby hobby. the justice says this is not about the size of the business. hobby lobby is owned by the parents and children. that can be said for other companies, one located in pennsylvania. hobby lobby. i spoke to their attorney. they have 28,000 workers. they were only against four of the 20 fda approved contraceptives under the affordable care act. they said it would violate certain birth controls. five justices were in favor. this could oech the doors for other -- open the doors for other companies to come forward

when fighting certain parts of the obamacare mandate. we'll be waiting to hear from both sides of the issue. we'll be checking back in one issue from now. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the u.s. supreme court has just refused to hear an appeal from a popular oyster farm in marin county feas facing closure. the justices did not comment on the case. that leaves in place lower courts ruling of drake's boy. the lower courts have allowed them to keep operating while the case was spending. >> police in san jose are looking for leads that left an autistic man with serious injuries. it happened at hostetter. janine de la vega joins us live with more on the family's plea to find the person responsible. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori, the accident happened at 9:45 at night when it was dark here at the intersection which is a block away from 680 at

hostetter road. police have little to go on. that's frustrating to the family of john paul garcia. garcia is in icu suffering from broken bones and spinal cord injuries that could leave him paralyzed. last wednesday night, the 26- year-old was in the crosswalk on hostetter at oaks when a car hit him and left the scene. they were told his body flew 20 feet knocking him out of his shoes. garcia had gone to buy ice cream for his nephew and was on his way home when he was hit. >> my family -- we get that accidents happen but -- [audio difficulties] >> we want to find him -- we don't want money. we don't want anything from him. we just want him to own up to his actions. >> reporter: garcia's mother actually drove by the accident on her way to work but had no

idea it was her son laying in the road. as you heard, they desperately want the driver to come forward and police are asking people to jog their memories. if you remember being in this area near north san jose last wednesday night. if you have any information to please give them a call. all they have to go on, they think the suspect was driving a black sedan. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. about 200 gallons of gas leaked after a pickup truck crashed into a pump at a gas station in san mateo. it happened around noon yesterday at the valero on east 4th avenue and south of delaware street. a chief said crews arriving on scene activated an emergency shutoff switch and were able to prevent any fuel from spilling into storm drains. it's still unclear what caused the crash. no one was hurt.

police in antioch are looking for the person who shot seven people during a party over the weekend. the shooting happened saturday night at a home on cedar point way. neighbors say there was a good- sized crowd at the home when a person drove by and fired shots into the garage. >> it was rapid fire. it started out maybe two, three shots. after that it was an unloaded clip at that point, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> two victims showed up at local hospitals. anyone with information is asked to call police. jury deliberations are set to resume today in bryan stow's civil trial against the los angeles dodgers. stow's family is seeking almost $38 million to pay his medical bills in future years and double that for pain and suffering. stow's attorney said the dodgers were negligent and

should have had more security. the team's attorneys say stow was drunk and is partly to blame for what happened. >> later today. a court hearing is scheduled for a san francisco man who prompted a nationwide manhunt after fbi officials say they found a homemade bomb inside his apartment. ryan chamberlain pleaded not guilty to federal charges that include possessing an illegal destructive device and possession of a loaded firearm with a serial number filed off. prosecutors also say they found a package of caster beans, raw materials used to make ricin in his apartment. san francisco general hospital will rescrew its response to the asiana crash one year ago. the trauma center treated dozens of seriously injured passengers immediately after the crash landing at sfo on july 6th of 2013. today, the hospital will display the models for new

emergency rooms that will be used in the next mass casualty disaster. they will hold a panel discussion on the critical lessons learned from last year's deadly crash. a new 911 dispatch center will be unveiled today in oakland. the facility includes new and improved work stations and a more efficient shot spotter operation. this project is the result of a $750,000 investment to make realtime communication between dispatchers and police officers clearer, easier and faster. later today, president obama will nominate a new director to lead the embattled department of veterans affairs. also today, the president will nominate bob mcdonald, a former ceo of procter & gamble. if confirmed by the senate, mcdonald will be tasked will leading the department blamed for treatment delays and coverups. mcdonald would replace eric shinseki who resigned last month. it looks thousands of

people may have taken part in an experiment by facebook without realizing it. for one week in 2012, facebook put upbeat posts on some of the user' feeds and negative posts on others. it was part of a psychological study facebook did with researchers at cornell university and uc san francisco. the people who received bad news mosted more negative posts. while those who read good news responded positive. there's no indication that people were asked if they would like to take part in the study. the search is on for a suspected drunk driver in san francisco following a hit-and- run crash. in just 201 minutes a look at the damage splice police say the driver caused at a well- known store. it was a chaotic end to pride celebrations in san francisco. the incident that sent people scrambling in fear of their lives. and right now, we are still looking at a commute that's

right near where a man was shot saturday night. both people who were shot are expected to survive their injuries. all three incidents happened near the end of yesterday's parade route. now, we're still waiting to hear from police on how many total arrests were made over the weekend. but so far, we know that 75 people were arrested on saturday alone. 65 were for public intoxication. six felony arrests were made for assault and weapons violations and four people were arrested on misdemeanor charges. now, of course, the pride parade attracts people from all over the world. and the question now is can people come here and be -- and stay safe. we have calls out to san francisco supervisors and the police chief. hopefully, we can get a comment on what they are doing and what they will do to keep the celebration that's very large very safe for people. >> on ktvu.com, you will find

morning at cliff's variety store at 18th and castro streets. tara moriarty is outside the store with more on how police hope to track down the driver. tara, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, that's right. police are looking for the driver, many who suspect he was drunk when he crashed into the store. there's no storefront window here. that was completely wiped out. there was a trash bin that was absolutely a disaster. we know the city crews are trying to haul it out of here. it's so heavy. there's some structural damage to the building. police say that the driver of a convertible mercedes slammed into the variety store on castro street before 4:30. the person feared off the road, tearing the garbage can sheer off the sidewalk. toys were knocked all over the floor inside. we spoke to the owner and she says she's angry that the driver ran off after the accident. >> i think it's probably pretty typical of anyone who is driving and driving and who has

himself and no one one -- no one else. according to the san francisco fire department smoke was coming from a maintenance truck but they say no one was injured. a house fire started shortly after 5:00 at a home at 35th not far from 580. our crew was on the scene a short time later. investigators say the injured man was sound asleep when the fire started. >> just said he woke up and saw flames. so he was -- it appears that he did come through the front door, where the majority of the fire is. so he's very lucky. >> we understand the victim suffered minor burns and is listed in stable condition. investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire but it appears to have started on

the porch. that's raising concerns it was intentionally set. the $29 million surplus comes from hole sale transfer taxes due to the market and the mayor wants that money to go down paying down debt and filling some positions that had to be eliminated because of past budget problems. other council members say the money should be set aside for a rainy -- in a rainy-day fund. and mayor quan is seeking a second term. she kicks off her re-election campaign in the city across the bay. she says her campaign against crime has made the streets safer and she's brought new jobs and housing to oakland during her first term. she does face a packed field of more than a dozen contenders and they include two powerful members of the oakland city council.

every other station in the city will be operating on a full- time basis. for the past two years, the city's fire department has suffered through these brownouts. each station has been shut down for three days at a time with those rotating closures designed to save about $2.5 million a year. but oakland's new budget has given the department some breathing room and so the brownouts are ending just in time for what's expected to be a dangerous fire season. we talked with the deputy fire chief. he said these brownouts had a minimal effect on response time. but during emergencies every second counts. >> we were lucky. the fact that a house was closed, you know, a couple of fires i analyzed early on and later, it was seconds worth of a delay. 30 seconds, 40 seconds, that could be life altering if we're the wrong situation. i think we were lucky to some

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 8:42. let's get you updated on some of the top stories we're foaling. today, muni workers will review the deal that could end their ongoing contract dispute with management. on friday, union leaders reached a tentative agreement with management on a new three- year contract. the deal if ratified with members who settle a labor dispute affecting the bay area's biggest transit agency. one man suffered burns to his head after an early-morning house fire in oakland. it started after 5:30 this morning at a home on 35th avenue not far from interstate 580. investigators say the fire started on the front porch. and san francisco police looking for the driver of a car that smashed into a store in the castro district. it happened earlier this morning at cliff's variety store at 18th and castro streets. that's where tara moriarty is. she's in front of the store

street. no one was injured. quite a bit of chaos, though. a man was arrested in the area with two guns. a half-hour later, a woman was shot on market street, not far from where a man was shot saturday night. both people are expected to survive. all three incidents happened near the end of the parade route. police are asking people to come forward with any information on what may have led up to the shooting. now, so far we know that 75 people were arrested on saturday alone. 65 were for public intoxication. six felony arrests were made for assault violations and four people were arrested on misdemeanor charges. we're waiting now to get an update from san francisco police on total arrests for the weekend. we're gonna have updates throughout the day and online at ktvu.com. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you for the update.

killed 19 firefighters. it was on june 30th of last year when high winds caused the yarnell fire to move towards a crew of firefighters in prescott. memorial services were held yesterday and more are planned today. >> our souls ache for those who gave their lives for us. people are still processing all of this. >> the feales of a dozen of the -- the families of a dozen of the firefighters have filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming the state was negligent in the effort to fight the fires. saturday night there was a brief police shoot on pacheco. the suspect slowed down to let a little boy out of the car and then rammed a patrol car. he had his hand in his waistband when he got out. the chp opened fire. they found a gun and drugs

inside his car. it looks like thousands of people may have taken part in an experiment by facebook without even realizing it. for one week, in 2012, facebook put upbeat posts on some of the users' feeds and negative posts on others. it was part of a psychological research test. the study found people who received bad news posted more negative posts, while those who read good news responded positively. there's no indication if people were asked if they want to take part in the study. the man behind hidden crash is back at it. he brought his cash to oakland. last month, a real estate investor started the twitter craze when he tweeted clues of crash hidden around the bay area and other cities. people have been rushing to find the money ever since.
