learned. >> an east bay hospital on high security alert. what was found inside that has the fbi involved. >> plus squirrel trouble at one berkeley park. the new plan from the city to deal with an exploding population and why that plan has animal lovers applauding. the ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. about 180 homes have been evacuated as that wild fire continues to burn in napa county. here's a live look right now. you can see this is a part that has been burned out in pope valley is the area. tara moriarty is out there this morning. she will have more on this morning's firefighterring efforts coming up in two minutes and more on the evacuations that are still under way. it is wednesday, july 2nd i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm brian flores in for dave clark.

let's talk about your weather and traffic. and steve, you called it, it's cooler than normal. >> tara sent in it looks like the fog is burning off. slight breeze. we will take that breeze. i've seen upper 40s and low 50s. huge difference from monday. there is a robust fog bank here. i mean it is turbo charged. you combine that with a weak front gusts to 30 at travis, 24 concord. casey said it's windy and overcast. if it makes it that far this early, that is a sure sign it will be a cooler day. 50s on the temps most. there is a couple 60s and upper 40s. san ramon is 48. brentwood is only 50. 57, 58, and 59. go down to castro valley. 59 walnut creek. we do have the weak little system. barely see it. but it is there. that is enhancing the fog. probably a little coastal mist and drizzle. low clouds way inland today.

below normal temps especially away from the coast. 80s for some. 50s and 60s and 70s for others. here is sal. we are still looking at a commute that is getting busier by the moment. i want to start off with a look at 280 in san jose where traffic here looks good. like wise on 101 we promised you a look at -- you can see the road sensors are green just as we saw on the camera. 85 not bad. northbound 87 and 82 is okay. 101 is slowing a little bit near the 280 interchange. after that it gets up to slow photographic. 580 westbound we had an earlier crash on grant line road. it is off to the side. we are waiting for tow trucks. i want to take a look at the east shore freeway. still only 18 minutes and then when you get to the toll plaza, there is a backup of 20 minutes before you get into san francisco. 6:02 let's go back to the desk. this morning we are following that developing news in napa county where a large

wild fire is only 30% contained. it started yesterday afternoon in pope valley. ktvu tara moriarty is up there at the command center with more on what the conditions are like this morning. it sounds pretty good weather wise. >> reporter: yeah from where we are standing we can see a charred hillside and a couple of spot fires but really the conditions are not too bad. if you go through the canyon you can see some flames. we will stay back out of that area just because simply it's quite smoky and the fire is lapping up near the road in parts. people from 180 homes in berryessa estates have be evacuated and at last check it was 30% con taped. 50 people did not make it out of their homes so they are sheltering in place. cal fire is confident they are safe because crews created fuel breaks around the homes. five buildings have burned to the ground. one of them possibly a home. the rest barns and chose. one man we spoke to say they spent most of yesterday

rescuing pets and livestock. >> we will drive up with an escort either a fire or the rescue people and we will go some place, help someone rescue their animals and take them to a safe location. >> reporter: the fire began around noon yesterday and quickly scorched hundreds of acres of wooded hillsides. the bone dry conditions and extreme heat obviously added fuel to the fire. we don't know exactly what caused it, we are hearing reports that young men accidentally started the fire while clearing weeds with power tools. folks that live around here say this is the driest summer that they can remember. cal fire says it will resume its air attack here shortly. probably in two hours. i know steve was asking a little bit about the weather. there is a cool breeze. there is a slight breeze, however. so that is good for the fire fighting conditions. and it seems like there is a lot of smoke in the area. i can't tell if it's fog or clouds or simply smoke. we will try to get a better picture and we will send news

chopper 2 above the scene. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> the red cross has set up two evacuation centers for people that have been ordered to leave their homes. one is at middle town high school, the second is pope valley elementary school. two fires burning at the same time in san jose exposed just how stretched the city's resources are for fire season. on monday afternoon, a large grass fire threatened homes in south san jose. and then another fire started six miles away at the public golf course. according to the mercury news, 60% of the city's fire crews were responding to both of those fires. that left a handful of firefighters left to cover any emergencies for the rest of the city. the fire captain says if they are ever in need of more help, they will call in off duty firefighters or ask for help from nearby cities. despite being a very dry winter, only one bay area city set a low rainfall record. national weather service official rain year ended

yesterday. san jose marked its second driest year with 6.4 inches of rain. it was san francisco's 15th driest rain. oakland however did record its driest year ever just nine inches in oakland. santa cruz set a record with 13 inches. tropical storm arthur could ruin fourth of july celebrations for people along the east coast. right now the first name storm of the 2014 hurricane season is off the coast of central florida. it is expected to be become a hurricane tomorrow. the bad weather could wash out a lot of holiday parties and there are concerns it could cause problem for people with travel plans. glare are potential -- >> they are potentially staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. but it has potential for cancellations and delays possibly if they are traveling by air and for rainy and slick road conditions. >> the system is expected to clear out by the weekend but forecasters say it could leave behind powerful rip currents at east coast beaches.

we have new information about a home invasion robbery in san jose where an 85-year- old woman was the victim of sexual assault. police say two suspects broke into the home of the woman and her husband early yesterday morning. we now know they were armed with a knife which was used to force a couple to the back of their home. >> right now i'm feeling so disgusted with the people that did this. >> the two suspects stole the couple's car and later spotted by police after a short chase they crashed into an empty home. the 15-year-old that was spined in the passenger seat was arrested. they are still look for the driver that is latino between the ages of 17-25. police are hoping to get more information to put together a sketch. the city of berkeley has come up with a new way to control the booming squirrel population at a popular park. alex savidge is joining us live with how the new plan is

getting applause from animal rights activists. >> reporter: good morning. instead of exterminating the squirrels, the city is planning to make it a crime to feed them in the parks. the whole issue centers around the large squirrel population here. along the watt every front. this park is built on top of a landfill and the critters out here have been burring holes in the dirt and there are some concerns that could lead to a toxic waste. now originally the city considered chill killing the squirrels but that led to a public outcry. they formed a special subcommittee and the best way to control the critters was to simply stop feeding them. once the new law takes effect, anyone caught tossing peanuts or breads to squirrels can face $1,000 fine and six months in jail. over the next six months the city is expected if put up new signs and brochures here at the parks.

they will post it on the signs letting people know they cannot feed the squirrels or any other animals in the parks. live in berkeley alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the stage is now set for another tense confrontation involving the future of the a's in oakland. the city council ordered its four members on the board to reject the lease extension. that proposal would have lowered the a's annual rent at the coliseum by 20%. they will now release its own proposed lease extension tomorrow addressing the economic concerns. last week the city council members on the coliseum board didn't show up for a board on the lease deal. time is 6:09. and fire engulfs a home in oakland early this morning. coming up at 6:30 the furious efforts by firefighters to stop the flames from spreading. >> i just saw the fire and the fire just hit me and i started running. >> nearly a dozen people hurt

welcome back everybody. and take a look at this video. amazing. at least 11 people were hurt after a food truck exploded in philadelphia. as you can see, it was caught on surveillance cameras. two women who were inside the truck received serious burns. the explosion happened yesterday evening as the truck was parked outside of an auto body shop. >> walking by and the truck just blew up. and i just saw the fire and the fire hit me and i started running. >> police say it appears the explosion was caused by one of two propane tanks on the back of the truck. about 140 undocumented immigrants many of them unaccompanied children are at a federal facility in san diego this morning. that is after they were blocked from reaching their intended destination in marietta.

three loaded buses had to turn around in marietta instead go to a customs and border facility in san diego. now the immigrants came from texas where facilities had been overwhelmed by an influx of children mostly crossing the border illegally. authorities are racing to find facilities to accommodate them but protestors say they don't want them in marietta. >> we've got to get a handle on immigration but you have to stop giving them a reason to come over. >> what happens next is unclear. city officials say they were told to expect 140 immigrants every three days. the next group is scheduled to arrive on the fourth of july. the federal government is suing t-mobile for a practice known as cramming. the federal trade commission says they charged customers for premium services including special ring tones and

subscriptions they never paid for. consumer advocates say length think bills makes it easier top hide charges from customers. >> it looks to us that t-mobile was going to get away with a fast one to rip off its customers and that is just not right. >> t-mobile says it has stopped building for the text services and says it's reaching out to customers to let them know how to get refunds. the debate over renaming the school. the west contra costa school board president wants to rename port-au middle school. some people oppose any name change. they are also unhappy with the way the board is handling the public hearing. >> why are all the meetings in the summer when everyone is on

vacation? so people are not available. why rename a school that is already in existence. >> we need to it them about the history of racism and the city right movement. >> the school board will vote on the name change next wednesday night. time is 6:15. wildlife officials are asking for people to be on the lookout for a marmot that is running look in san francisco. wildlife officials are hoping to capture it soon so they can return it to its native habitat in the sierra. this is the second summoner a row a marmot ended up in san francisco. last june another marmot was spotted in the bernal heights neighborhood and managed to stay on the loose for two months before it was captured. 6:16 is the time. let's check back in with sal. what are you keeping an eye on? >> the livermore valley pam and brian is a problem because of the motorcycle crash. the chp says it was minor

injuries, however lanes are still blocked on 580 at grant line roads. something is make them keep some of those lanes closed. they are just now getting word that all the lanes are open again. so they were just open. they were closed for a bit. so the sig alert has been lifted. the traffic is going to be slow coming into the area. so give yourself extra time. as we move over here, you can see traffic on 580 itself looks good into dublin. moving over to the hayward and castro valley area it doesn't look that bad. traffic continues to look pretty good on 580. especially if you are getting on half the dublin interchange. already some slowing approaching 238. let's go to live pictures now, the traffic is moving along pretty well on the bay bridge for this time of the morning. we're also looking at the exhume in san jose. so far it has not been that bad

meeting. they will try to learn more about the incident involving an airport security agent that led to his arrest. later this month smith will be sentence the on felony gun charges in an unrelated case in san jose. san francisco police have broken up an illegal fire works operation just days before the fourth of july. under cover officers say 18- year-old eric yang was running the operation out of a cafe. he had 15-year-old boy retrieve the fire works in a storage space. police say they confiscated 100 illegal fire works and prosecutors are charging the 18- year-old with felony possession of explosions and child endangerment. there are plans for three new microapartment projects in san francisco haze valley. the neighborhood is filled with shops, restaurants, and parks. making the area very popular. and some is people say all that could offset living in a space that is just 174 square feet.

it is 53 now. still looking around 90-degree high. humidity is high. i expect that to go down. they did have low clouds that burned off pretty early and light southerly breeze court to tara moriarty. i have seen 2-5 miles an hour. sometimes that fire can create its own breeze. we don't have a north wind. we don't have an east wind and humidity is up. boy there is a big fog bank there and there is reports of local drizzle. it will be cooler today. definitely gusts over 30 for some. and napa, novato favoring a southerly direction. 50s on the temps or right about 60. with that fog making it well inland. 57 foster city. belmont 58. 58 los altos hills. i did see 48 calistoga. that is that weak little front. low cloud deck, low overcast. below normal temps away from

the coast. 80s and a lot of 50s and 60s to the west. here is sal. we are looking at conditions getting more crowded all over the place. on the east shore freeway it is held steady. just a little bit more drive time between the carquinez bridge and mccarthur maze. a lot of people have friday off. that almost mean people are trying to extend their weekend if they will. tomorrow will have lighter conditions. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza it is only a 15 minute drive time. maybe up to 20 minutes now. no problems on the actual bridge getting into the city. of course no problems between san francisco and oakland. south bay commute continues to be very good here. we don't see a lot of slow traffic on 101. it is a little early for this commute to get going. we did see some slowing on northbound 101. that is all 280 and 85 still look good. it is 6:32 let's go back to the desk. this morning crews remain on the fire lines of the wild fire continues to grow in napa county. it is now burned 3200 acres in

pope valley. >> the flames have forced dozens of people from their homes. two evacuation centers have been set up. tara moriarty is following this developing news and is joining us from the command center with more on this morning's continued fire fight. tara. >> reporter: we just spoke to cal fire. they say the fire moved in a northeast direction. when we first arrived here on scene, we could see the glow of a lot of spot fires. it was still pretty dark outside. now it has dispated and you can see mostly smoke. fire crews say there are still hot spots through the canyon. this is a very active fire with 30% containment at last check. people from about 180 homes have been evacuated. at least five buildings have burned to the ground. one of them possibly a home. the rest barns and sheds. neighbors help neighbors rescue livestocks and many ended up at one of two red cross shelters.

house fire. this was the scene just moments after the fire started at 1:30 this morning. now no one was home at the time but firefighters say the flames gutted the home and forced the evacuation of the house next door. there is extra security at washington hospital in fremont this morning. following a disturbing discovery. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live to tell us about the bomb parts that were found inside the hospital building and janine you have been talking with a hospital staff. what are they saying? >> a lot of the staff here they stopped at washington hospital i had them check their work e- mails so they hadn't seen the security e-mail. it talks about the security threat here at the hospital. they say they are concerned and surprised but they say they are going to still concentrate on patient care. in the hospital notice put out yesterday, it states there has been recent security related incidents which included the

discovery of the components of a bomb found at the main hospital. local law enforcement and the fbi examined a device and determined it to be the makings of a device. washington hospital is on high security alert which means anyone entering a hospital building is subject to increased security screenings including the inceptions of personal belongs. >> it's really nerve wracking where a bomb threat would be at an institution that is supposed to be saving peoples lives instead of threatening. >> reporter: the hospital says anyone entering including physicians, employees, volunteers, viz ors, patients, and vendors must use hospital issued identification that is visible. if they don't, they will be stopped and escorted to the lobby. we did talk to hospital staff and they say they did not

observe any more security than normal. we have also reached out to law enforcement to get more specific details. we're trying to nail down exactly when this happened and in the notice it also mentions recent security related threats. they used the plural. we are wondering what else happened here. reporting live from fremont janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. hayward police will start using small body mounted video cameras to record their encounter with the public. record video and audio. the city attorney says that could help cut claims of officers using excessive force as much as a%. there was no public opposition to the plan. and wearing the cameras will be mandatory. >> in three hours jury deliberations resume in bryan stow's lawsuit against the los

angeles dodger. they are trying to figure out if the dodgers are responsible for the brutal beating in the parking lot. stow's lawyers are asking for about $50 million in damages. claiming the dodgers failed to provide adequate security that day. the dodger defense team argue there is was more security that day than at any other dodgers opening day in history. berkeley is trying a new option that could help curb the rapidly growing squirrel problem. but they say this idea is weaponing support from animal rights activists but some say they will be named criminals. they don't like that. >> the city of berkeley says instead of kick the squirrels, they will -- instead of killing the squirrels, they will make it a crime to feed them. and this centers around the large squirrel population here at caesar chavez park. this park is built on top of a landfill. the critters have been causing

problems. burring holes in the dirt. there is concern that could lead to a toxic leak. now originally the city considered exterminating the squirrels but the council backed away from that idea after a public outcry. the council formed a special squirrel subcommittee to come up with a special solution. the best way to control the critters was to simply stop feeding them. once the new law takes effect anyone used tossing peanuts could face $1,000 fine and six months in jail. now to bring you back out here live this morning over the next few months the city is expected to begin putting up new signs and putting out new brochures at all of the parks here in berkeley. letting people know it's against the law to feed the squirrels and any other animals for that matter. live in berkeley, alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. berkeley voters will also get to decide if there should be a tax on sugary drinks sold

in their city. last night the stackable approved putting the measure on the november ballot. if voters approve it, the measure would impose a penny an ounce tax. the money will go into the city's general fund so it only requires a simple majority to pass. san francisco voters will also decide on a $0.02 per ounce tax. it could be a whole new ball game in the political battle over the future of the oakland a's. what members are planning to do tomorrow. but also coming up. >> just about every week there is a new pile of glass. three or four cars at a time. >> a lot of car break ins. the complaints that went unanswered at an oakland parking lot. >> good morning. we are still looking at a commute where traffic is getting busier on highway four. it's not all that bad. coming up we will take a look at highway 24 on the way to the tunnel. >> well, weather is trying to help the firefighters up toward lake berryessa today.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. there is a growing frustration about a rash of car break ins at an amtrak parking lot. one man who was asked not to reveal his identity takes

amtrak daily from oakland to santa clara. his truck was broken into twice in two months. most recently on friday and he's not alone. four other vehicles were also vandalized in the same lot on the same day. >> it just doesn't feel good to know that your belongings were ripped apart. they didn't steal anything. just straight up vandalism. >> he complained to an amtrak employee and was told to park at a different station. he also reported the crime to oakland police and officers tell us they patrol the surrounding area but that amtrak does its own patrol of the parking lot. a san jose man who was hit by a car on father's day has died from his injuries. police say a hit and run driver ran over 51-year-old steve yanis last month while he was walking down the capitol expressway. investigators are still looking for the driver of a black suv seen leaving the scene of the crash. cal trans warning drivers to get ready for delays and detours. the weekend closure of

interstate 280 begins at 9:00 tonight. cal tran showing down northbound lanes in downtown san francisco for freeway repair work. the closure is scheduled to last the entire fourth of july weekend until 5:00 monday morning. now the southbound lanes of interstate 280 will stay open. that stretch of southbound 280 was closed over the memorial day weekend for a similar highway repair project and another 280 closure is planned for the labor day holiday weekend. team usa's world cup run is over after a heartbreaking loss to belgium. the game went to 120 minutes and during that extra time the u.s. went down 2-0. but substitute julian green scored late to cut that in half. there it is right there. great pass by michael bradley. the u.s. could not equalize. u.s. goalie tim howard was voted man of the match. he had a great world cup.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. tensions are running high in israel after the body of a palestinian teenager was found in the woods. they have received reports that a palestinian teenager had been forced into a car a couple hours later the body was found but it's not clear if the two incidents are related. this comes days after the bodies of three missing israeli teens were found in the west bank. police say this latest death could be a revenge killing. a jury has cleared former bart police officer johan necessary mehserle. he has been serving a life sentence for murder before his son was born.

>> the attorney for oscar grant's father says he is considering an appeal. the two women who were attacked while heading home from last weekend's gay pride celebration in san francisco are speaking out about their harrowing experience. jackie and jennifer say they were walking along ninth street when they were attacked by six men. jennifer says that one of the men told her she was being attacked because she is gay. >> i got kicked at least ten times that i could count before i held my head and i curled up into a little ball. >> i saw the guy reach back his leg and kick her so hard in the head. it reminded me of a football player kicking off a ball. >> i felt so close to being gone. >> both women suffered injuries and working with a police sketch artist. police have several leads but they are asking witnesses to please come forward.
